Little Gem Is Now Open in Cow Hollow | Eater SF

"I found a gluten- and dairy-free restaurant opened by two Thomas Keller Restaurant Group alums that brings Little Gem’s Hayes Valley concept to Union Street as a second location. Eric Lilavois (former TKRG chief operating officer) and chef‑partner Dave Cruz (former chef de cuisine of Ad Hoc) built the concept to be scalable and “all inclusive,” serving diners with restricted diets from dairy‑ and gluten‑free to keto and paleo in a health- and lifestyle‑conscious neighborhood. Taking over Umami Burger’s former spot allowed Studio BBA to complete a quicker buildout into a warmer 70‑seat space with a marble bar, skylights, Douglas fir tables and shelves made by Cruz, a small outdoor seating area, and a much larger prep area below that gives Cruz room to expand the menu. That extra space has enabled plans to bring back the much‑missed fried chicken—brined thighs coated in his potato‑and‑rice flour mix seasoned with gochugaru and fried to a shattering crisp—plus an “LG Pantry” of toasted oat crumble, jams and preserves, and seasoned nut-and-seed mixes for take-home. I also learned they may introduce sheep and goat milk cheeses or ghee in the future, that the Union Street outpost will be full‑service at all times (unlike Hayes Valley’s counter service at lunch), and that it will offer wine, beer and kombucha on tap, low‑ABV cocktails, Culture Counter Coffee, Song tea and other non‑alcoholic drinks; the restaurant is open for dinner now with lunch and weekend brunch coming (current hours Tue–Thu 5–9, Fri–Sat 5–10)." - Ellen Fort

This cocktail bar is a welcome addition to the Chapel Hill/Durham collection. Located in the former Piggy Back space, it is barely recognizable. Low lights and cool hues set the mood along with the rare practice of playing full vinyl albums which are well curated. Excellent cocktails and light snacks offered. Nice selection of wines by the glass as well. Friendly and knowledgeable service and opened later which is appreciated! Please support and visit, totally worth it. Did I mention the cocktails were excellent?

Chapel Hill got a classy cocktail bar! Had the best time at their opening night, and I can’t wait to visit again. Tucked away in the most unassuming way, this aptly named treasure boasts a solid crew and even better drinks. Classics, creative riffs, and bold new visions make for a fun night out. Special nod to their commitment to having an N/A selection that doesn’t compromise on the both the taste and quality of the drink and the social aspect of imbibing together. I ended the night switching to a mocktail and it was JUST as good.

This is a fantastic and much needed intimate Chapel Hill bar with adult vibes, a homey feel and incredible cocktails. My company had our holiday party there with catering from their sister company Beau Catering and the experience was outstanding. I'll be back to enjoy the neighborhood bar scene!

The best humans run this bar. The best people hang at this bar. Little Gem is a gem for us in Chapel Hill, ya’ll. Best fancy snacks to go with your pinky up cocktail. Cool music and cool bathroom decor. Also super clean! It’s important. The best low lighting, also important. Check it out!!!

Bree and Paul were friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. We sampled a Sound Bite nibble, two cocktails and a neat Taylor bourbon… they were all excellent. We will be back with some friends!

Yelp
Stop deliberating - visiting Little Gem is the bucket list item you didn't know you had. Vibes at the 'Gem work for the cocktail connoisseur, the memorable date night, and the much needed end-of-shift respite for workers with taste. I trust only 3 establishments within 50 miles to make me a proper, delectable cocktail. The Little Gem joins them as the fourth, yet becomes the foremost as a step forward in terms of originality and cozy, eclectic cultural connections. Yes, the staff will make you something delicious from the menu -- a most well-authored menu. And should you so desire, a tasty twist on your favorite staple. Music and lighting are on point: the effervescent selection of vinyl records jam while the album's cover proclaims the genius of its time. You can bring anyone here and be glad that you did.

Yelp
Little Gem is such a little gem! Tucked away behind The Pig and beside Chapel Chill ice cream, Little Gem is an unassuming cocktail bar (with beer on tap!) that hits you with a fine vibe the moment you walk in. There is purple furniture throughout with candles lit at each table, and soft seats near the courtyard entrance. We had an obscure and tasteful Black Sabbath song playing, which we learned was playing on vinyl from the record player on the back wall. The mixologist, Doug, who's just all sorts of awesome, later physically swapped out the record for a Beach Boys LP that had literally zero Beach Boys songs that I'd ever heard. It was rad. The cocktails were phenomenal, aromatic, and balanced. The menu has them split out into "Originals" (cocktails they invented), "Covers" (cocktails, that other famous bartenders invented), and "Remixes" (Little Gem's spin on existing cocktails). The music theme was on point. We also ordered some marinated feta and white bean dip that came from Beau's Catering (in the same courtyard), where Paul Finn (the owner of Little Gem) is the Beverage Director. I highly recommend the dip, it blew our minds. Do yourself a favor and go check out Little Gem. Maybe a mini date night or pop in while you're waiting for your order from The Pig or your kids are getting ice cream next door. And while you're there, take a moment to appreciate the music playing straight from the record player. It's such a vibe.

Yelp
We went with another couple for a late night drink. The pink Negroni and the craft beer were good. Modern decor and attentive service. A convenient watering hole for the northwestern neighborhoods around East Chapel Hill HS.
