Where to Dine Solo in San Diego - Eater San Diego

"There are many great places to dine solo in Little Italy, from casual pizza by the slice to somewhat more formal restaurants. This elevated food court, with its oblong bar dropped in the middle of the action and several excellent dining options (from rice bowls to gelato), might be the most exciting in terms of people-watching." - Roxana Popescu

Very impromptu decision to come here because we were passing by the area and I had seen it sometime on Instagram and realized that this was the place! Really love the variety of shells and fillings that they had. Husband and I made cannoli with chocolate dipped shell + classic ricotta filling + Oreo on one side and pistachio on the other side. The ricotta filling was really lovely and went well with both the Oreos and the pistachio. I think the chocolate on the Shell got a little too strong for me but husband seem to like it. Shell was really fresh and the filling was also fresh. That Cannoli went down so easily and was so delicious, we could have definitely gone for more!

The pictures look better than it tasted. However they were able to seat us right away while all the other places gave us 2+ hour wait. The food might have spoken for that. It still wasn’t terrible, customer service was a little on the slower side. Tip: Don’t order the “freshly squeezed” orange juice as it is straight out of a bottle and tastes gross! It is NOT freshly squeezed.

We were in the area due to work. We flew here from Eastern North Carolina. I've been a fan of Sam the Cooking Guy for years now as I have a few of his knives and the cast iron skillet. I knew since I was in the area I had to go do at least one of his restaurants while I was here. I stopped at Samburgers and it did not disappoint. Little Italy is such a cool, chill little place. Stopped and talked to a few random people and everyone was so nice. The food at Samburgers was great. I got the jalapeno burger and it was amazing. It is easily one of the best burgers I've ever had and it's due to the flavor of the patty. The flavor of the patty is hands down the most flavorful patty I've ever had. Everything complimented each other extremely well and the bread was great too. And like his videos, all the toppings covered all the burger. Every bite had every thing in it that you were supposed to eat. The fries actually were kind of just okay, but the garlic aioli was amazing. Hands down I would recommend this place and I can't wait to go to Not Not Tacos and the other joints in there. Everything looked great.

We came across The Mini Donut Company by accident while grabbing gelato nearby. The cute mini donuts caught our eyes so we bought half a doz. The flavors were good. I do like the peppermint and the churros flavors. FYI, they only accept credit cards.

On our visit to San Diego we wanted to try something new this time. I found the Little Italy Food Hall and figured it would have something for everyone. I tried Not Not Tacos and everything was fantastic. The food was delicious and the margaritas were cold and refreshing. The food was flavorful the staff wonderful and the location was nice. It had seating both inside and out. I’d absolutely do back to try more places.

I ordered the special during San Diego restaurant week. My meal was spectacular! I had a multi course gourmet meal for under $60. Bread, some mushroom dish, carrots, perfectly done big cut of Bison, garlic mash potatoes, green beans and bread pudding (they ran out of chocolate lava cake). It was just amazing..each dish was just right. Zero complaints. I'll be back next week to try another round. Amazing food at an amazing location. The bar is top notch too. Highly recommended.

Google
Amazing variety of food with an abundance of flavor. There are so many choices and each is an experience. Good choices for vegans/vegetarians. The wine list is extensive though the Italian wines are truly hit or miss. Friendly, helpful staff and service is good even at peak hours. Parking is hellish so best is to use one of the valet parking services across the street.

From Gelato, Canoli, Asian Food, Tacos to Pizza and Wine, great place to hang out with family, friends, kids…we had pizza and wine, super friendly bar tenders. In the heart of Little Italy.

Yelp
This review is for the Food Hall Bar located in the center of the small food hall. Met up with a friend there while visiting Sunny San Diego and we loved the mezcal drinks offered there! We tried the Sam's New Favorite and the I'll Fumo. Both made with Vamonos Mezcal -- which I discovered through them and can't wait to buy! Anyway, the bartender was excellent and knowledgeable. I went on a Friday during the lunch hour and this food hall was not very busy (although the bartender said after 5pm it would get busy). It's a decent size bar, but I could see it getting very packed especially once the lines start getting long for the food spots inside. Great central Little Italy location. Great drinks and great service!

Yelp
Finally had the opportunity to check out the Little Italy food hall earlier this week and while there are a lot of great vendors here, I was disappointed seeing only 2 Italian vendors while the rest were from other countries. The 2 Italian vendors are Bobboi Gelato and Ambrogio15 which serve pizzas based from Milan. I was surprised to see Mein Street which is an Asian vendor and Coocoo's Nest which focuses on chicken sandwiches. Both of them looked good but I didn't try them out. I stopped by for Samburgers and they have a quality burger there. The ambience was overall quite lively when I stopped by with music being played live at the plaza right outside and plenty of people dining. The bar was knocking out drinks and it was a great vibe overall. The service from the staff was friendly and they were helpful with any questions. Street parking is available right outside and it's easy to walk around Little Italy when you are done dining. I recommend checking out this food hall if you are nearby but if you are looking for Italian food, I recommend checking out one of the restaurants down the street.

Yelp
Great variety of decent to above average food. The food hall itself has some great little offerings... smash burgers, creative tacos, cool beer selection and delicious ice cream. But the best part is sitting outside and watching people ... and their doggies. Pick a night when they have music and that's a big plus.

Yelp
This is a nice spot to stop for a quick bite while exploring Little Italy! There are multiple cuisine options within the food hall, so there should be something for everyone. We decided to share some empanadas and a pizza. Both were amazing! We weren't expecting the quality to be as good as it was. The pricing is pretty standard (for California) and when the weather is nice the outdoor seating area is a great spot to sit and enjoy the courtyard entertainment.
google avatar

Yelp
Situated in the downtown area of San Diego come check out this spot for multiple selections of food from all over the world! Bobo Natural Gelato, Coocoos nest, not not tacos, ambrogio15, samuburgers, and Mein Asian Kitchen all sit inside!!
google avatar

Claire L.

Yelp
Loved this food hall packed with good options for everyone! Try the fish tacos from the Mexican counter and you won't regret it. Also get the gelato as your dessert on your way out. High quality ingredients that taste amazing!

Yelp
Cute lil food hall in Little Italy... adorable between apartments. Service was good... we tried the tacos and minu donuts. Free drink fr our paint night!

Yelp
Came here yesterday and chatted with Ethan about music and things in life. Learns he came from a family of talented artists- musicians & tattoo artists! He also makes great drinks too as a bartender and hooked me up with a white wine & a cocktail- old fashioned. While I ordered other foods from nearby food stands. You can try out the wines/beer taps first before deciding on which one you like to have. It was lite when I arrived, but by the time I left, the bar was filled with people! A great way to enjoy a refreshing Tuesday afternoon! It was a nice relaxing vibes when I came through. Had a nice lunch before I walk my drunk ass back to my office lol.... The whiskey was !!! Oh man!! Luckily I had tots to go down with it.... lol

Yelp
The pizza was not memorable and they added thyme which is not authentic or traditional to Italian pizza. The female bartender at the bar was extremely rude and sarcastic with me. The only worthy stands in this hall would be the gelato - very comparable to what we had in Rome and Florence. Also the cannoli stand was very very close to authentic. They fill the shells in front of you as it should be done.

Yelp
Not a bad place for lunch smack dab in Little Italy. There's a burger place, wood-fired pizza and a "Not Tacos" taco place. I ended up grabbing a lettuce wrap burger with a double patty when I visited and though the burger was decent, although to be honest I am not sure if I found it to be any tastier than a In 'N Out burger. The Food Hall itself is decent, but I wish it had some coffee options as I had to find another place to go to grab a brew. All in all though, it's a nice place for a meeting. You'll likely be able to find something to please your palate!

Yelp
When I saw food hall I thought that it will have many eateries but I was surprised how small it was. No Italian food but you will find Mexican food, asian food, fried chicken and burger place, ice cream and beignets. It's a good place to try different foods specially if you already had too much Italian food. It's located right in the middle of Little Italy between the restaurants. So if you are looking for variety of foods this is the place for you.

Yelp
Such a cute little food hall with lots of open seating inside and outside. Upon my recent visit, I was happy to see that the Mini Donut Co opened up there, love their donuts. While the food hall is on the smaller size, they have a good variety of food as well as a bar in the middle area. I usually order food and sit outside in the outdoor promenade and enjoy the Little Italy ambiance, bay breezes and live entertainment if you go on certain days. It can get crowded and it's a pretty big tourist hit spot. This occasion my friend and I sat inside at the bar. Service upon sitting was quick and the bartender was offered good suggestions and ordered some cocktails. We did have to wait quite a while for the check since there was only one bartender but we had a nice time and will be back!

Yelp
3.5 stars. Overall I liked it here. Liked the Not Not Tacos the best. Had 3 tacos, the hot chicken, the bulgalgi, and the fish. The latter two are really solid. The chicken was lacking hot sauce or something. Just ok. Also got a bacon burger at the burger place and it's not bad. Had a pizza also, was just ok, wouldn't get another pizza. And also at the Japanese place, fried tofu and pepper squid which were pretty disappointing. Had some apricot whiskey sour that was really quite tasty from the bar. Overall not too crazy on a Fri night and had a good time.

Yelp
We recently took a trip to San Diego and stumbled upon this delightful food hall. We loved that there were so many choices for lunch and dinner and/or dessert. The chow mein was excellent and the "tacos not tacos" were original and fun. The best, of course, were the cannoli. Hands down, some of the best I've ever had with exciting flavor combos and additions. It's a fun atmosphere with a little something for everyone.

Yelp
Variety of options, food decent quality, and nice courtyard area with fountain, ocean in the distance, and sometimes music. Kid friendly and casual.
google avatar

Yelp
Love all the options available for the whole family. We've ordered from almost every one in there and have all been great.

Yelp
This review is for the ramen place within the food hall. No! Just bad. The beef was FATTY! Very little meat was included, I had to separate the fat away it was so so so bad! I tried this place on a whim, didn't read reviews, just walked in and ordered. I paid almost $20 for a bowl of fat, ramen , and broth. Sad place! I am disappointed a business would serve this and think it's okay. Yuck and shame on you.
google avatar

Yelp
Came at night, pretty busy, but the ambiance was very lively and music and pretty cool. If you don't live around here, parking is a pain in the afternoon. The food hall in general was a bit pricey for most of the food they sell here but it's probably because of the location.
google avatar

Vanessa C.

Yelp
Nice place for a spot for a casual bite to eat. They have Italian, tacos, ramen and American. Plus a bar to watch the game. It is fairly small but nicely kept up with seating area inside.
google avatar

cynthia g.

Yelp
I did think there would be more Italian food options but there was a good variety and everything looked yummy, has a variety of pizza and baked goods, ice-cream and Asian food. You will def find something you like

Yelp
I have been here 3 times and every time I order from a different place. Love this food hall. This past time I ordered a pizza from Ambrogio's and it was delicious. Right amount of toppings to cheese ration. Yum! Last time I was here I ordered from Mein St. Asia Kitchen and Not Not Tacos and both entrees were tasty as well. I will definitely try the gelato from Bobbo Natural Gelato next time I visit. I really like the overall layout of this food hall. It is quite a fun social dining experience. There are a variety of tables out in the open where couples and families can sit together and meet new friends. Definitely a fun place to gather, enjoy good food, and celebrate! The piazza della famiglia has a nice large fountain and outdoor seating as well. Perfect place to socialize and enjoy drinks with a nice SD view.

Yelp
We enjoyed our time at the Little Italy Food Hall! It was very busy since the Farmer's Market was going on. They don't have a ton of seating in there, so we were lucky to snag a spot. We tried the Not Not Tacos and really enjoyed it! We got the BBQ and mac & cheese taco and some tater tots, both were very good and had a lot of flavor! We also tried the Gelato and the Salted CaRUMel was very good as well! :) We will have to try more of the food next time we are there!
google avatar

Nick P.

Yelp
Cool little food hall. Too bad we didn't really pick up any food from here, but perhaps next time. There's a lot of different food options from pizza to burgers and tacos. There's honestly something for everyone. There's seating indoors and also outdoors too. Lovely spot. We'll definitely come back to try the food offerings next time!
google avatar

Kristina K.

Yelp
So many options to explore! The food is hit or miss, not a ton of healthy options. It's also a bit crowded during the day. Not really my cup of tea. It's a cool idea but for the price I would rather just go to a nearby restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
We got pizza forgot the name of the place we had sausage and mushrooms it was good with our beer that we got from the bar. I like the place it is a goos place to hang out! The pad thai was really good and the I think that was orange chicken.

Yelp
What a great space to entertain dinner. We were advised to come to this section of Little Italy to get a meal by others at our training. We were notified that we would be able to find a variety of different places we could try and they weren't lying. The open air between the building for outdoor seating was a very welcome advantage over other places. Outdoor eating, in my opinion, is an advantage right now. And the tables are spread out just enough, but if you don't want to do the outdoor thing, there is indoor seating as well. There are several stations inside to choose from. The outdoor space is shared between the other businesses. Reminds me of markets that other cities have. Every and anything that can tickle your fancy can be found under one roof. I got myself some food, a libation, and I finished it up with some dessert. I could see easily spending a fair amount of time here without noticing the time fly by on a regular occasion if I lived here. This night sure did fly by, before my group new it the sun had set and we needed to head our way back to the hotel.

Yelp
Lots of options and nice area. I enjoyed the chicken sandwich place and the donut place. Sandwiches was great! I had the sandwich with gochujang glaze, kimchi slaw, and pickles. I love Asian food and this place hit the spot. The donuts were ok, but the frosting melted pretty quickly in the sun.

Hannah Danga E.

Yelp
We thought this place would be a continuation of Sam's personality... friendly, upbeat. We arrived and were excited to try the food but decided to start with a cocktail. The bar staff were so inattentive and then rude when finally got served that we left and ate somewhere else! Bummer because we came specifically to try this place.
google avatar

Adam V.

Yelp
Located in a super cool area and luckily for me only a couple minute walk from my apartment. Lots of different food options that all serve quality and delicious food. Very friendly staff at all of the restaurants.
google avatar

Bexx K.

Yelp
Tried not not tacos and samburgers and loved the food at samburger but not not tacos was disappointing! Love the concept of the food hall and the location in little Italy is supreme but the food was seriously hit and miss.
google avatar

Sharon D.

Yelp
Was wandering around Little Italy and stumbled upon this Marche and we were glad we did. We were looking for a small snack to get us through until our dinner reservation and we enjoyed walking through, seeing the options, landing on Gelato and enjoying eating it in the outdoor seating area while listening to live music. There were so many great options to choose from. I would definitely go back and try the others - there was tacos, burgers, pizza, cocktails and so much more.
google avatar

Peter H.

Yelp
Burgers, pizza, tacos, gelato are the options at this nice little food hall. If you watch YouTube Sam the Cooking Guy, he's got a few places here and they are delicious.
google avatar

Khoi N.

Yelp
This is a great place to come if you want to enjoy all types of food. Unfortunately, some of the spots are mediocre at best. The craft cocktails at the bar were awesome and so was the bartender. At Samsburgers, my friends and I ordered the Sam's cheeseburger and chili cheese fries. The fries were extra crispy and the burger was cooked perfectly. At Mein St Kitchen, we ordered the Mongolian beef which was a huge mistake. Food was extremely salty and drenched in sauce. Would not recommend this place. Ambrogio 15 was one of the main highlights of this hall. The Pizza Burrata e Prosciutto Crudo deserves 5 stars. Creamy burrata and fresh prosciutto from a hot imported Italian stone oven was amazing. We wanted to order more, but knew we have to save our stomachs for other food. The Mini donut company was a nice addition as well. I enjoyed the maple, glazed, chocolate and Fruit Pebbles one the most. Love the concept here. You can get a lil bit of everything. The Hall itself is really clean and well managed. Don't expect a long wait for your food. There is seating inside and outdoor seating with some umbrellas as well. Parking can be limited so try your with street parking or find a local garage.

Bob N.

Yelp
Absolutley horrible. I asked for vegetable ramen. VEGEBTABLE ramen. These inefficient workers put pork in my ramen. For context, I am Muslim so this is a huge disrespect to my religion. Plus I am a strict vegetarian who has never had a piece of meet in my life up until now.
google avatar

Rodrigo R.

Yelp
Food - 4/5 - we got burgers here and those were good but the pizza was disappointing Service - NA - cafeteria style food hall so just fine in terms of service Price - Standard so that's a 5/5 for me

Charlotte H.

Yelp
Nice place to go if you have a group with various food preferences but I don't think anything really stood out as extra good.
google avatar

Ken R.

Yelp
Sam Burgers was really good, one of the best burgers I've had in awhile I will definitely be back, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Minus one point for the ordering process as you have to use the computer and you can't use cash.
google avatar

Yelp
Writing a review specifically for the FoodHall Bar! I have been here a few times, during rush hour, or when it's very slow, and the guys are still very nice and welcoming each time! A few times I sat there conversing with random guests, and bartenders: Anthony and Julio are very attentive and welcoming. They ask for your name and make really good drinks! Staycation is my fave- It has Tito's vodka, mint, pomegranate juice, lemon, lavendar agave! Definitely grab a seat, a drink and chat with some of your neighbors around the bar!
google avatar

Adrienne T.

Yelp
The food hall had a great variety for their food selection and the quality was great. There wasn't a lot of seating and I was expecting a bigger taco for the prices, but they were delicious. The teriyaki chicken taco was the taco of the month and I really enjoyed it, but it was a little too sweet for my taste. The service was good
google avatar

Lolita M.

Yelp
Loved all the options here..daughter had pizza and me and my other kid had tacos..my vegetarian of course and they were yummy and even topped it off with a margarita
google avatar

Derek B.

Yelp
The little food hall has a handful of food options. We opted for the burgers and the lobster roll place. The ambiance outside of this Place is a 10/10. The lobster roll was perfect! Oh and super pet friendly.
google avatar

Suzie R.

Yelp
Such a fun cool place to explore! Lots of different types of food options that will please everyone! Such a cute district of downtown San Diego.
google avatar

Lexi T.

Yelp
The Little Italy Food Hall is the perfect eating destination when everyone in your group is craving something different! Pizza, tacos, drinks -- they have it all! I opted in for some delicious pizza and a cocktail... couldn't have been better! Added tip -- public restrooms that are CLEAN!
google avatar

Yelp
Cool spot to grab some food within Piazza della Famiglia in the heart of Little Italy. I've been dining in Little Italy for years and have never checked this place out until recently. They have a full bar and a number of dining options available to choose from. There are taco, seafood, Asian, hamburger, and gelato options. You can eat indoors or outdoors on one of the many tables on the plaza. I love this area of San Diego and the surrounding culture. It's a great spot to gather and dine in community together over some good food.
google avatar

Elbie N.

Yelp
I mean, you'd expect Italian food in the Little Italy food court right? Nope. We were desperate so we ate here anyway. We had the Asian food (really good), the fried chicken tenders with fries (good), and the fried chicke. salad (good). Overall, not bad.

Yelp
What can I say?! I'm biased, lol...biased because I love my San Diego and all it has to offer! Little Italy's Food Hall is an amazing place to come and explore different kinds of grub, desserts and drinks. It's like the Public Market at Liberty Station, but located in DTSD. Parking can get crazy because it's downtown, but eventually you'll find a spot. They offer everything from pizza to gelato, and everything inbetween. There are patio tables set up out in the courtyard (a.k.a. Piazza della Famiglia) which are clearly marked to promote social distancing. Inside the food hall, the floors are also clearly marked. Staff is masked and there is sanitizer for your use. Masks are required when indoors. I went in for my sweet treat after another night of oysters across the street (ha!). Bobboi fulfilled my craving and definitely hit the spot. The guy who helped me was very nice and quick to scoop up my gelato. I also hit up Zucchero around the corner for some hot chai tea. The lady there was also pleasant and politely accommodated my special requests. It's rare these days to find non-disgruntled employees, so I was glad they both offered service with a smile. =) Looks like I will be frequenting this area, as I didn't get to see it all. Place is well kept up with trash/recycle bins and people seem to clean up after themselves pretty well. Highly recommend you check it out. Bring the fam, your bestie or your crew/s.o. You're definitely gonna find something that floats your boat!
google avatar

Hannah N.

Yelp
I have been wanting to check out this place for awhile as I have walked past it a ton of times but have not really explored all it has to offer. I found myself feeling lazy working from my apartment so I thought let's change it up! Though I did have to use my hot spot for wifi it ended up being a great spot to get some work done and enjoy a beer and tacos. Marco was the bartender while I was there and even created me a signature drink that he created which ended up being my new favorite. I was so sad once he left since it isn't on the menu but it'll have me coming back for another one soon. The food hall has so many options I was torn on what food to pick so I will have to come back soon to try out another spot! Overall was a great experience and pretty mellow during the week so I highly recommend taking your laptop and enjoying a beer while you get through the mid week struggle!
google avatar

Gabriela G.

Yelp
Came here because we saw a review on YouTube. Unfortunately, it's not worth the hype. Food was overpriced and not that good. Tables were dirty and bathrooms disgusting and hot. The area also has a lot of homeless and it smells like urine when you're walking around downtown. It was sad to see because San Diego was one of our favorite places to visit for a quick weekend getaway.

Yelp
I love how they have this little food hall in Little Italy! This is a great place to take family and friends who are visiting. I love how there is a variety/selection of food to pick from. A lot smaller than other food halls I have visited but I would have to say for Little Italy its the perfect size!
