Why Vegan Desserts Are the Best They’ve Ever Been | Eater

"A Poughkeepsie bakery whose lead baker describes a liberated, rule-breaking approach to vegan baking; signature items include peanut butter pretzel croissants and pesto-feta danishes, showcasing how the team uses creative reformulation to achieve familiar formats in dairy-free forms." - Charlotte Druckman

Google
Absolutely phenomenal shop. Drove an hour just to experience their seasonal butternut squash sage pumpkin danish and it was worth every mile! Also throughly enjoyed their avocado toasty, which was a fresh take on avocado toast with very soft lightly toasted bread, avocado slices, and pickled onions. It was absolutely delicious. And their iced chai (ordered with oat milk and pumpkin) rivals any specialty coffee shop I’ve been to. Extremely highly recommend. Plenty of seating inside in a bright and airy dining room as well as some cute bistro seats outdoors. Fantastic staff - so friendly, personable, knowledgeable, and helpful. Hands-down top notch!!!!

Google
Absolutely incredible pastries! Not only were they the best vegan pastries I've ever had, they were the best pastries I've ever had. I'll forever be dreaming of the raspberry pistachio danish. It's so good that we came back multiple days. The lunch sandwiches were tasty and the bread to die for. Little Loaf Bakeshop is amazing! 11/10 would recommend.

Google
This place is lovely! I stopped in for lunch and to grab some pastries. It's such a bright, inviting space—love the big windows! My BLAT was tasty, and the vinaigrette on the side salad was delicious. The pastries are stellar. I wanted to try one of everything, but I settled on the mushroom-gochujang pastry, raspberry morning bun, pretzel cinnamon roll, key lime danish, and peanut butter bread pudding. I'll absolutely be back to try more. Everyone at the shop was very friendly. 10/10 all around. A must-try for vegans and non-vegans alike.

I really wanted to love this place - it is gorgeous and all the employees are so nice - but unfortunately the hot chocolate I ordered was abysmal 🥲 literally could not drink it, not sure if something went wrong that day. I also had a cookie and that one was ok, nothing special. I will definitely be giving them another shot next time I’m in town and I hope I can edit my review!

Google
Okay first of all, I LOVE the interior design of Little Loaf but the pastries were life changing!! I haven’t had such amazing vegan pastries in a long time. If you’re vegan, this is a MUST. Don’t skip it, you’ll regret it.

Google
Absolutely loved this bakery! The croissants were so buttery and fresh that I didn’t even stop to take a photo before devouring them. Pairing them with their excellent coffee made for the perfect start to the day. The vibe is warm and inviting—one of those places you instantly want to linger in. Already looking forward to my next visit!

Stopped by the little loaf table at the beacon farmers market, the staff was super friendly and they had so many unique pastry options. The Campfire S’mores danish was in. credible…. INCREDIBLE!! We also tried the PB & J cookies which I enjoyed. Good on yall for proving it can be vegan and still be delicious. I cannot wait to try more of your amazing pastries !!

Wow! I did NOT expect to taste the most amazing vegan pastry I’ve ever had. My daughter was on her way to work and asked if I wanted a croissant. I said no at first because every vegan croissant I’ve tried before has left me disappointed. But I agreed to split one with her—and I’m so glad I did! We tried the pretzel chocolate croissant and OMG… absolutely incredible. Flaky, rich, perfect texture and flavor. I literally had to go back and buy more pastries. Thank you for creating these delicious vegan delicacies, you’ve earned a new loyal customer (when I’m back in town from Kirkland Washington).

Yelp
If you are a pastry lover like me, allow me to introduce you to possibly THE BEST vegan pastries you'll ever encounter. Little Loaf Bakeshop sits on the main street of New Paltz in the most beautiful A frame building. It has gorgeous windows and adorable decorations. I like to consider myself a Little Loaf "OG" because I'm not quite sure they could have funded their gorgoeus storefront without my generous purchases from the Cold Spring and Beacon farmers markets. I've been there since before they even owned their storefront...Yeah...you could and should call me an OG. Their pastries are to die for. My favorites are as follows: Twice baked maple croissant, strawberry rose croissant (limited time only), raspberry morning roll, and finally, a special mention for their serrano cream cheese danish that my mother always raved about. Even though it's been months since my mother moved away, she'll still talk about that damn danish. When I first visited their storefront, I was so excited to try their breakfast sandwiches on a Little Loaf croissant. I figured, if they were anything like their pastries, this breakfast sandwich was about to blow my mind. To say I was disappointed would be putting it lightly. My jaw dropped when I opened this average sized croissant to find a single slice of Violife cheddar cheese and a frozen (cooked) Just Egg patty staring back at me. I have not ordered a breakfast sandwich from them since, but I am willing to give them a second chance...a redemption arc, if you will. The owners, Rian and Colleen, are such kind and wonderful people with an awesome passion. When I first saw Little Loaf at the Cold Spring farmers market I jumped for joy. Vegan pastries from an LGBTQ+ owned bakery? You're kidding. So naturally, I ran up to the stall and purchased nearly everything I saw. Rian, noticing my excitement, offered me some free pastries. From that moment, I was sold. This is my family. I am rooting for their success in every way. I love my gay little bakery!!

Yelp
Lovely coffee shop in the area! The coffee shop is stunning. Bright, huge windows, very IG-friendly. The pastries here are the way to go! Especially the savory ones. The avocado toast was also yummy. I wasn't a big fan of the potatoes - they were just meh and some of the sweets like funfetti cookies and chocolate loaf were underwhelming. I think it's probably because I'm not vegan and I'm used to a certain texture/sweetness though. The drinks and coffees were great and we loved our brunch here! The parking lot gets busy but people are in and out fast.

Yelp
The good: service was excellent and the cider and almond maple croissant was good. The bad: insanely expensive, and it's all vegan. The vegan bacon is something I don't think would be legal to feed to prisoners, same goes for the egg. The cheese was truly disgusting and I don't want to know what it was made of. I guess if you are vegan and really want baked goods...just grow up and be normal.

Yelp
Uh may zing. Omg this is so good. All vegan bake shop with fantastic drinks. The box is your frequent shopper 'card' since you bring it back each time, get it stamped, and earn a free pastry. The sweet was delicious, the savory was equally amazing, and it was all so pretty. They definitely take care to ensure you're eating with your eyes. It's not close to me but I will go as often as I can!

Yelp
Coffee 5/5 (love the latte art) Food 4/5 Ambience 5/5 So I totally didn't realize this was a vegan spot until they mentioned they didn't have whole milk lol. But hey, I tried the breakfast bowl and it was actually pretty decent for what it was. And it was super aesthetically pleasing The interior design here is awesome, with tons of natural light. You order up front, then grab a seat in their open space. Plus, they've got an outdoor area that's perfect for hanging with your pet

Yelp
Also fell victim to not realizing the shop was all vegan when I asked for a latte with regular milk. The pastries look delicious, but unfortunately we were incredibly turned off the moment we walked in the door. The two employees behind the counter looked up and saw us walk in, and they didn't acknowledge our existence for quite some time. I used to work in the service industry, and a bakery specifically and i get a sour taste in my mouth if it feels like you are not treated with respect when you walk through the door. I'm sure the pastries are delicious, but due to the rudeness of the staff, I will never try them.

Yelp
I want to live in this cafe!!! What a fabulous addition to the New Paltz community. The owners have nailed it all - the space itself is beautiful, staff is warm and inviting, and the food is fresh and tasty AF. This has become our favorite brunch spot in the area. Oat latte? 10/10. The breakfast sandwiches, the breakfast bowl, cookies, the danishes, .......the pretzel croissant??!!?!! Hell, we even brought boxes of their croissants and cookies to our wedding, we love them that much. Caterers be damned. But seriously, be kind to yourself. Carve out an hour and indulge in some seriously epic carbs in this gorgeous, sunny piece of heaven.

Yelp
Little Loaf is the third fully vegan dining establishment in New Paltz (along with Karma Road and Lagusta's, both awesome, pretty great for a smallish town). Little Loaf turns out irresistible pastries, both sweet and savory, in a cafe space that is one of the most friendly, relaxed, and inviting around. Tonight, Little Loaf hosted La Vegana Taqueria for a pop-up featuring tacos. I tried the Al Pastor (made from soy curls) and the Carnitas (made from portobello mushrooms). They were served Baja style in soft corn tortillas. Both were light on the palate and deeply flavorful. The Pastor was satisfying (I'd never tried soy curls before and became a fast fan), while the Carnitas stole the show, selling out early. I got the last order and savored every bite. I hope this is first of many such pop-ups at Little Loaf.

Yelp
Not a vegan so I don't have a lot of experience with vegan restaurants and such. I didn't have any expectations but what caught my eye was the chipotle cream cheese croissant. And around this time of year, when you see an opportunity to get an apple cider, you take it! I've had sweeter apple cider before. Enthusiastic staff. The establishment in itself is beautiful, great lighting and great sitting areas. The croissant was warm, airy, in flaky exterior. The everything bagel seasoning was just the perfect salt component. The con though is the low amount of chipotle cream cheese filling. The flavor was there, the ratio was just off. But I can't speak for the rest of the menu, so take from this what you must.

Yelp
What an awesome bakery! I had a bacon egg and cheese on a pretzel brioche roll, and I drooled for it every bite of the way. Don't forget it's vegan and also forget it's vegan for those of you who are skeptical. Good food is good food

Anne-Sophie D.

Yelp
The place is super cute and stylish. Farmhouse chic meets retro 70's vibe. The croissant was absolutely delicious. A great balance of buttery, flaky and airy. The Americano was delicious. I strongly recommend LLB!

Yelp
I don't know why it's taken me so long to write a review for little loaf bake shop but let me just say their pastries are truly the best!! I highly recommend trying anything you think you'd like from them, because there are simply no misses. Catch them in Poughkeepsie or at the Beacon Farmers market on Sundays or sometimes at Matters coffee in croton. Drive as far as you need to grab these amazing treats. Owned by the nicest people ever, I always feel so happy to be able to support their business!

Denise T.

Yelp
Our Oat milk Latte and cappuccino were delicious. We enjoyed our chocolate croissant so much we went back for a chocolate peanut butter cupcake, which was outstanding! This is a must stop when you visit New Paltz!!

Yelp
I am obsessed with Little Loaf Bakeshop! It seriously has the best vegan pastries, with both sweet and savory options. I've ordered them both at The Vegan Market and at RI Veg Fest. Every pastry hits and delights. It is a must buy at their brick n mortar or when at a vegan popup!

Christopher S.

Yelp
I dont have to shop here but my wife has a dairy allergy. first time in the new location and its very nice building. The back parking lot could be paved but i guess thats part of the charm. Drove from queens so i was a little salty but my wife was happy.

Robin Z.

Yelp
Very busy place get, the coffee is good and I love the kalamata croissants . All the other breads and pastries are really delicious , they also have cakes which I haven't tried
google avatar

Holly L.

Yelp
Oh Little Loaf why must you be so far?! I had the pleasure of watching these culinary masterminds while working in the next booth during VegFest (all Vegan Vendors) in Providence Rhode Island. I made sure to jump in line early. I grabbed a maple walnut croissant FANTASTIC, a rose croissant DELECTABLE, and a savory pesto and olive croissant TO DIE FOR. I should preface that I am not vegan, not that it matters but this bakery could convert anyone. You don't feel like you're "missing out" on anything with it being vegan. Do yourself a favor, check this place out asap.

Yelp
Visiting Poughkeepsie for the week and found LLB here on Yelp. Cute shop in the PUW incubator space. Service was energetic and friendly - positive vibes all around. As a non-vegan, I'd prefer a butter croissant but their vegan expression of the almond croissant was quite a treat. I recommend you check this place out - vegan or not.

Yelp
Pure deliciousness! Holy yumminess! Wherever they are, there's line out the door which is no joke on their popularity. I mean this isn't just about their tasty ass baked goods, ok it is but they also have a lasagna danish which is so unheard of yet also genius, like a bagel pizza but savory goodness w/ less bread. So yeah get there & let your tastebuds be happy & brain synapses even happier.

Yelp
Moving to the Hudson Valley from DC has been an experience. On one hand, I'm surrounded by gorgeous mountains, sparkling lakes, a calmer pace, and some truly incredible baked goods (pizza! bagels! focaccia!). On the other hand... DC is a vegan paradise and I really miss having so many options. Some days it just kinda feels like everything here is covered in cheese... But! I ran into the Beacon farmers market on a Sunday and found tons of vegan options, including Little Loaf. I'm picky AF about pastries, and I can easily say that the raspberry-filled bun and pretzel croissant were some of THE best baked goods I've ever eaten. Period, end of story.

M L.

Yelp
Great vegan bakery and café with *very* limited hours. Their croissants, sandwiches, and coffee are delicious. My only complaint is that it's never open when I'm in Poughkeepsie.

Sivan B.

Yelp
I discovered Little Loaf Bakeshop at Vegandale and I'm so glad I did. Awesome owners, service, and pastries! The Mushroom Bechamél was my favorite, but I also enjoyed the Raspberry Cruffin, and Pretzel Cinnamon Roll. I plan to make a trip to Hudson Valley from the city at some point just to try more of their pastries.

Julia L.

Yelp
WOW. I am absolutely blown away by the incredible experience my mom and I received here. We were greeted with the warmest ambiance, fresh flowers, and the absolutely friendliest staff. The most amazing flaky croissants, coffee, and pop-up local business stands in side the cafe was a huge bonus. Couldn't recommend more!!

Kate L.

Yelp
Little Loaf is a true gem. We are lucky to have them here in Poughkeepsie. Staff is so friendly and the pastries are out of this world. I recommend Little Loaf to everyone I know. Run, don't walk!

Kayla J.

Yelp
Incredible vegan pastries and coffee! The classics are excellent as are the more creative flavors.

Deborah B.

Yelp
Colleen, Rian and their staff have made going to the Poughkeepsie Underwear Factory to have one ( or two, or more) of their delicious pastries an addiction! Looking in that case of beautifully made items, well for me, it's a tough decision which one I will choose as my " weekly treat". Love the vibe there too. So happy that the Underwear Factory has reopened a cafe where I take my friends and family to.

Daron W.

Yelp
Little loaf staff creates the most incredib le pastries to ever touch the human palet ,the customers service warm and inviting always a pleasure.never change.

Jayme S.

Yelp
I really enjoy spending my time and money at the LLB popup in the PK Underwear Factory. I know it's difficult to run a popup business in a shared use space owned an operated by Hudson River Housing, where so much of what goes on is out of your control, but everyone at LLB does their very best and did I mention VEGAN CROISSANTS!? being vegan for over 20 years I never in my wildest dreams thought I could head down the street and grab an amazing vegan croissant (UGH THE SOUR CHERRY DANISH IS ) and don't get me started on the mushroom béchamel pastry. SO FLAKY. anywho...I highly recommend you give this small business a try.

Maura P.

Yelp
The crew at little loaf bake shop are top notch people who make incredible pastries.

Cait F.

Yelp
So glad I found this place! They serve the most delicious pastries and cookies (and about half were vegan!) and coffee in a warm, inviting setting. A great spot to do some work or study with good lighting, tables and just the right level of background music. The staff were all lovely - friendly, accomodating and I could tell how much everyone enjoyed being there. I can't wait to make this my dedicated 'work from home but actually at the bakeshop' spot now! Recommendation: the maple pecan croissant and a beautiful oat milk latte. Note: Little Loaf Bakeshop works with other Hudson Valley producers so you'll be supporting quite a few independent businesses
