Remembering the Saddest Restaurant Closures Across the Carolinas for 2023 | Eater Carolinas

"I already miss Little Miss Ha after it closed when lease renewal time came up; their Vietnamese egg rolls, banh xeo, and pho made running errands in Mount Pleasant a highlight, and I miss owner Janice Hudgins and her family." - Eater Staff

We absolutely love this restaurant! As a Vietnamese living in California, I thought nothing could compare to food back home or what I can find in California, but I was wrong. The dishes here are truly authentic, elevated, and full of flavor. The atmosphere feels high-end yet welcoming. The owner even came to our table personally to ask for feedback, which made the experience even more special. I’ll definitely be back the next time I’m in town!

My wife and I had originally reserved for Monday, but with rain in the forecast, we decided to go a day early. We didn’t RSVP this time thinking it wouldn’t be too busy like our last visit. Well, turns out it was Mother’s Day and they were fully booked! Luckily, after about an hour’s wait, we managed to get a table for two. Pretty happy with how it turned out! For starters, we ordered the Banh Bao and shrimp spring rolls. For mains, we shared both the Beef Pho and the Shaking Beef so we could try a bit of each. We really enjoyed the bao buns though we felt like a dipping sauce was missing. My wife ended up using the spring roll sauce for hers. The Shaking Beef was also delicious though the accompanying salad was a bit tricky to eat due to the long stems. I found myself using my fingers and even had to use a knife to slice through some of it. My wife found the pho broth a bit bland—no complaints from me, but she definitely knows her soups better than I do. All in all, it was a great experience. Service was spot on and we’d definitely recommend Little Miss Ha.

Best food and drinks in town! My husband and I heard it opened so we decided to check it out. The drink menu is so fun and very vast. The food is the best we have had I. st Augustine, and we live here! It’s also connected to the French Pastry with a bar in the middle where you can order from both menus. We ordered one meal from each. We loved both

What a beautiful addition to the downtown St. Augustine dining scene. This town is not known for it diversity in ethnic food, but Little Miss Ha gives us some great options now. The veggie spring rolls with mango were quite tasty and full of flavor. My fish dish was excellent and the pineapple glaze brought out all of the great flavors I was anticipating. They did such a fabulous job decorating this building. Don’t miss the trip to the dessert 🧁 case. Such a great selection from the French Pantry side of the building.

I love everything about Little Miss Ha. We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, Janice, and it was so obvious how much care she put into creating authentic Vietnamese food served in an elevated way. We have been waiting for a real food scene to develop in St Augustine for quite some time, and Little Miss Ha is blowing the door open for others. Also incredible care and attention paid to one of our diners who needed fully gluten free options. Obsessed and will be back all the time!!!

Was excited to find a Vietnamese restaurant nearby while staying in DT St. Augustine. I read that it was fairly new but still wanted to check it out. It is attached to a large building that is essentially apart of another restaurant called “French pantry.” I sat at the bar and was offered both menus but from my understanding that option is only offered at the bar and one small section or else you would get sat specifically at one or the other. There were a handful of items I wanted to try but finally settled on a few. Fried spring rolls 5/5 - this style of egg rolls are made with rice paper which is a regional distinction which I personally enjoy more than the traditional wrapper. Crispy, with a chewy texture and nice sauce. I loved that I got a small portion of vermicelli noodles and lettuce to wrap them in. Fresh summer rolls 5/5 - I wish they had a pork and shrimp combo offered but the shrimp only was still good. I enjoy eating them with both fish sauce (nuoc Cham) and peanut sauce. Shaking beef 4/5 - was recommended to me by the owner and a popular choice it seemed. I’ve had this dish many times and is hard to find at most viet restaurants because it’s a regional dish. The beef was tender but a bit on the dryer side and not caramelized. I’ve had it where it’s a touch saucier and served over the bed of watercress so the juices seem through and saturate the greens and gives it a nice flavor that’s more cohesive. There was just too much watercress so I basically took most of it off. It can be overwhelming with how bitter it is and have nothing on it. It was tender and I would’ve preferred the pieces being cut smaller because there were several very big chunks. Still enjoyed it for the most part. And of course a Vietnamese meal is not complete without a Vietnamese iced coffee! ☕️

Our initial arrival was disappointing. My coworker and I waited 3–5 minutes at the host stand to be seated, as no staff member was present. While this might be overlooked at a casual eatery, it was an unexpected lapse in service for what appears to be an upscale restaurant. The summer roll provided a high point: it was exceptionally fresh with top-quality ingredients, which raised my anticipation for the main course. However, the main event, the pho was a significant letdown. The broth was overly salty and had a strong, soy-heavy flavor that tasted unbalanced. It was so unsatisfactory that I felt compelled to ask about its preparation. While I was told the broth was prepared by a Vietnamese chef, I must state that it was arguably the worst pho broth I have ever tasted." Ultimately, I cannot recommend this establishment. Neither the service nor the food quality, particularly the signature dish, warrants the current price point.

We ate here on a Saturday afternoon. We got seated quickly. The atmosphere is really nice, and the server was great. Everyone was really friendly. The cons: We ordered the beef salad which tasted ok. I thought the way they cut it into small chunks was odd. I ordered the vermicelli rice noodle bowl with pork. The pork tasted like teriyaki, and I think the cut was lean pork chops - which is an unusual choice for this dish. My husband got the bun bo hue, which was bland and tasted like beef broth - didn’t taste like bun bo hue at all. For the price, we expected better. We spent about $75. I was hoping for more authenticity, but it was all pretty underwhelming. It’s too bad because it’s really beautiful in there.

Yelp
It feels like we stepped off the steamy streets of St. Augustine and into a plush oasis. The air was cool, the colors soothing and the seating comfortable. We were seated immediately and chose cocktails and small plates. "Small plates" is actually a misnomer because the portions are unexpectedly big. The menu explains sharing food is part of Vietnamese culture and there is plenty to go around. My dreams have come true after trying to find authentic Asian food in Florida. This is the best we've had since we left Hawaii with a delicate balance of sweet, spicy and umami with complementary texures of soft rice noodles and fresh crisp greens. This is the real deal. For our main entrees we chose Shaking Beef and Yellow Curry and received large servings of each. We also watched as spring rolls, bao buns and huge bowls of pho passed our table. There are several vegetarian choices on the menu as well. We're so happy to find this new gem of a restaurant. I imagine the dining experience at the French Pantry restaurant on the other side of the building is equally wonderful but I may not find out for a while. I will be eating my way through the Little Miss Ha menu before I venture anywhere els.

Yelp
Little Miss Ha definitely lived up to my expectations. She is actually quite a big space with high ceilings and open layout. My only complaint with the architecture is the tight hallway with only two single person bathrooms next to the kitchen and bar. Lots of parking which is a huge plus in downtown. We had reservations for a weeknight which were a good thing because the place was still packed even though it was a Tuesday. Maurice, the bar tender was our server. Awesome guy with great recommendations. We really enjoyed the Mar de Frades Albarino wine from Spain's Pontevedra province. All of our selections were outstanding. The Dumplings had a nice garlicky sauce. The Mussels came in a delicious green curry. The turmeric fish was delicious too and came with noodles and herbs.

Yelp
We initially had a reservation for Monday, but with rain in the forecast, we decided to go on Sunday instead. We forgot it was also Mother's Day, and the restaurant was packed! Luckily, we had no other plans and were happy to wait. After being seated, we knew exactly what to order. For starters, we had the Shrimp Spring Rolls and the Bánh Bao buns. Both were tasty. I used the spring roll dipping sauce for the buns, not realizing they came with their own until I saw another table's order. My husband's Shaking beef was delicious and the beef was so tender, however, we would've preferred the watercress to be pre-cut instead of all those tangled stems lol. As for my Beef Pho, it was disappointing. Typically, pho is known for its rich, aromatic broth, but this one lacked depth and flavor. I had to ask for sriracha and hoisin sauce, but they couldn't salvage the blandness. Overall, we had a great meal and will likely return to try other items on the menu, but we'll skip the pho next time.

Yelp
Came late one evening after arriving in St Augustine. Beautifully decorated space. Lovely Plates and wine glasses on all tables. Attentive staff and manager or owner (dont know which he was) was wonderful. However the food was disappointing. To start we had the steamed dumplings and shrimp spring rolls. The dumplings were very tough, but had good flavor. The spring rolls were just OK. For our mains we ordered Beef Pho and a Chiken Pho. Both were steaming hot and presented nicely. But lacked that complex deep flavor. Both very bland I tried adding the sauce that the dumplings came with but that didnt work. The manager/owner asked why we kept leaving food, I didnt have the heart to tell him we did t like all, he was so nice and there was nothing he could've done to change it. Stars are for the staff

Yelp
This place was amazing- our new favorite spot for Pho. The atmosphere was great; it's decorated well. We ordered the Ca Ri Xanh (green curry) and the Pho Bo (beef pho). Both were fantastic. Service was good- we enjoyed our server. We will definitely be coming back

Yelp
We went here for dinner and brought our kids. We really wanted to love this place. Vietnamese food is one of our favorites. The space is beautiful. Sharing the bar and kitchen is a little odd but the cocktails were good. The food just didn't meet the same mark. The egg rolls and the chicken wings were a little over cooked. The pho was really bland and it is probably a regional thing but I prefer less cinnamon in the broth. The shaking beef was really good but not enough to save the experience. We would love someone to tell us we have to go back and try it again.

Yelp
Great food and friendly service. Had the green curry muscles and vegetable spring rolls. Both were delicious.

Yelp
I have been desperate to find Vietnamese food and Little Miss Ha does not disappoint. The ingredients are so fresh and flavorful and very authentic. The mussels were plump and fresh and the green curry sauce had a kick to it. The Shrimp Rolls were our favorite. We enjoyed the Bao Buns which had such a clean crisp flavor. We ordered the Vermicelli Noodle Bowl with Shrimp and the Saigon Salad. Again, the freshest ingredients and delicious combinations. Brought some of the salads home because we ordered too much. Our server was Rob and he really seems to enjoy his job and insuring people have a great dining experience. The restaurant is very simple and lovely with a very clean aesthetic. This is going into my regular rotation of go to places.

Yelp
There is nothing funny about "Little Miss Ha". "Little Miss Ha" is a seriously good Vietnamese restaurant with the bonus of The French Pantry desserts. This was my second visit in five days to a new & beautifully appointed building that encompasses not only two fabulous restaurants but a lounge and a cooking school/ private party space owned by a spunky & warm person who we'll call Little Miss Ha herself. After friends & I had a scrumptious meal where flavors were bursting on our tastebuds Miss Ha herself gave us the grand tour of each space. Her love for the business not only shines through in the aesthetics of the building but in the pastries, cakes, cookies, cocktails, & dishes served in both of her restaurants side by side. My recommendations so far are - the lemongrass mussels served in a bowl swimming with a coconut lemongrass. It was so good I asked for a spoon to get the most out of the mixture. The mussels were tender, large & done just right. We also had the shrimp spring rolls. They were a pair of beautiful rolls served with a side of dipping sauce. I had the Yellow Chicken Curry which was outstanding. A mild curry with chunks of chicken & sweet potato. I was very happy it came with a bowl of rice to soak up all the curry sauce. My friend who loveeees Pho ordered the beef Pho & said it was outstanding. Another friend had never eaten Vietnamese food but was willing to try it, really enjoyed her beef strips served with white rice and veggies. For dessert our group ordered the Wedding Cake a famous dessert produced by The French Pantry. A large enough piece to share. It's so good. We also managed to have room for their yummy chocolate chip cookies. Thinking whether to sit on The French Pantry side or the Little Miss Ha side of the restaurant? No problem. Sit at a high top table and order from both sides. I'm planning my next visit already.

Yelp
Loved the ambiance but the pho and buns were bland and uninspired. On a second trip I sat at the bar next to someone who ordered from the Little Miss Ha menu and they were thoroughly enjoying themselves... For that alone, I will give it another shot.

Yelp
This restaurant is by far one of our all time favorites!! I went for dinner with several friends and we all shared multiple appetizers and entrées. We couldn't pick our favorite as we absolutely loved every dish. The flavors and sauces were spectacular. Everything was so fresh! The waitress was spot on with her recommendations and was very accommodating with splitting all the dishes for tasting - even the pho. Saint Augustine needed a restaurant like this and the French Pantry. Can't wait to go back.

Yelp
The food is incredible, the ambiance is fantastic and modern and the servers are very attentive to any concern you have! We spoke to the owner/operator several times who was super nice and gave us great recommendations! Compared to just about any other restaurant in St Augustine, Little Miss Ha is at the top of the list!

Yelp
Not real pho. Dumplings were alright. But overall sour and made my stomach hurt afterwards and service was very slow.

Yelp
Excellent service and food. It was difficult to find. It is in back of the French restaurant. I highly recommend it. Try it out. Authentic food!!

Yelp
Everything is wonderful at this new restaurant. Great concept to have two different cuisines in one space. Beautiful renovation of an old cinema. Food was top notch. Mussels were delicious, my Saigon salad with beef was gourmet, and my husband thought the pho was excellent (although he would have liked more noodles). Service was perfect. And for dessert we went to the French Pantry bakery and took home delicious cake and cappuccino. Great addition to downtown!

Jonna S.

Yelp
Interesting and delicious fusion of Vietnamese and French. Clever use of multiple restaurants to create to " back door " secret spaces. A lounge with music and even the " Little Miss Ha " entrance is in the back to create the atmosphere of finding the secret places with the best food. The filet mignon Shaking Beef was great, the spring roll with wrap and the Saigon salad were great. Excellent sommelier with French wines. Fun and beautiful new venue overlooking the Lightner museum gardens. Next want to try them for breakfast - Vietnamese coffee and the French Bakery compris

Rose Z.

Yelp
So delicious, fresh, light ingredients. The Bun vermicelli noodles with tofu was so good, so flavorful. We had Meghan as our server and she was so friendly and attentive. Beautiful natural clean decor. Highly recommend. We will be back.
