India Maxwell's Bozeman, Montana Travel Guide | Bon Appétit

"A delightful, locally owned diner run by a couple (Charlie Graham and Lauren Reich) that prioritizes sourcing from its own greenhouse and field; a standout is the griddled corn muffin served with maple syrup and grilled pears." - ByIndia Maxwell, as told to Melissa Loveridge

First time being at Little Star and it did not disappoint! Food was wonderful and service was great. We tried the carrots and the hummus for entrees and they were both delicious! I had the pork tamales they great portions and amazing flavor, my husband had the lamb pasta, they were very generous with the lamb but the pasta was too al dente for my taste- my husband thought the pasta was ok, just different tastes. For dessert we had the chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice cream - the ice cream was delicious, cookie was ok. We got some recommendations from our waitress and she knew what she was talking about - nothing like staff that knows and have tried the menu to be able to share more with the customers. Considering that we did a full meal, two entres, two main dishes, one alcoholic drink and one nonalcoholic, and dessert my husband and I thought that prices were pretty reasonable-for a nice kind of special occasion Bozeman restaurant. We will definitely be back!

Google
Very cute spot and the food was delicious. The open kitchen is great to watch things being cooked and plated. If you're a local or just visting you should stop in and have a meal here. We had the sourdough toast, burger, trout tacos, and cookie. All of which was great. We had expected the cookie to be larger, more cast iron cookie size, but would still would get it again. Everything that came out of the kitchen was beautifully plated and the culinary team was professional and looked to really care about their work. The restaurant is family owned and sources most ingredients locally which is great. The one thing I would say is I wish their ketchup wasn't made in house. Homemade ketchup is just something to skip or at least have an organic Heinz option(Revelry does this). The homemade was liquidy and tasted of barbecue sauce, not ketchup. I may well be the minority in this though. They do have a credit card fee ("service fee") of I think 3% from math memory. I didn't see it listed as something on the menu but may have missed it. Small rant... I never understand why places that do this don't just raise their pricing in general and not show that fee. Others in BZN have been adding that fee on as well and feels off since the vast majority of transactions are on a credit card; just plan for it in your pricing like you plan for food and labor costs. Such small things, because the place is great and so is the atmosphere. We will certainly be back (maybe BYOK*) and am glad to have found another great spot around town! *ketchup

Google
Awesome food that is all local and farm table! Our serve Caroline was wonderful and attentive. She gave great recommendations and just seemed to genuinely enjoy what she does. I have the duck breast, which was excellent! My husband had the tacos and the fried carrots. Highly recommend this place and will definitely be back.

Google
Very comfortable and warm atmosphere. Service is excellent. The menu is somewhat seasonal which makes for an interesting experience at different times of the year. Food quality and presentation is second to none. A very enjoyable restaurant for a couple or a larger party.

Google
Great food and atmosphere. The wooden furniture is amazing as well. They have a fantastic selection of natural wines, and the variety of the menu is pretty spectacular. You can get pasta, Asian fusion, steaks, Mediterranean, etc. Highly recommend for a nice meal out.

Google
If I could give it more stars, I would. The food was some of the best I had during my trip to Montana. They source their food locally and rotate the menu seasonally. The fried carrots app and spring salad changed my life. The tagliatelle was divine. The ravioli was very buttery and wasn’t as garlic-forward as I was expecting but still delicious. We absolutely loved our meal. Try to get a reservation, especially on the rooftop patio if it’s the appropriate time of year. Peak vibes. Worth mentioning, the building is beautifully designed and constructed. The materials and layout are functional and pleasant yet surprising. The plants surrounding the rooftop provide a gorgeous ambiance. And the art on display from local artist Anna Patterson perfectly depict the gorgeous Montana vistas. Don’t miss dining at Little Star Diner!

Don't miss this great place to eat. Chef John took care of us at the bar and the staff was friendly. Watched them prep our meal in front of our eyes. Falafel was GREAT. Menu changes weekly and it is expertly thought out. My wife and I had a chilled wine called cosmic blend which pairs perfectly with Vietnamese-American green garlic noodles served with pork belly. I had to order the pita bread and hummus to try and it was also a star. Finally found a great place to eat downtown! Check out the rooftop area as it's great when the weather permits. Make reservations!

Google
Little star has been my go to restaurant for the past 3 years. Having dined here alone, with family and friends, each time has been a pleasurable experience. I recently ate at the outdoor seating area and had a great time! Maya served me and she was amazing. Perfectly attentive and polite, she also did a great job of answering questions about the menu.

Yelp
On our final night in Bozeman, we enjoyed a farewell dinner at Little Star Diner that was -- hands down -- the best meal we had during our two weeks in town. Following the recommendations of our server, we started with two generous slices of sourdough topped with fresh tomatoes - a celebration of summer. We also enjoyed the fried broccolini, which was reminiscent of a sweet & savory brussels sprouts preparation. For the entree, we had the kebab paired with the bright flavors and textures of farro, harissa tahini, and cucumber. And for dessert? A decadent hazelnut cake topped with chocolate coconut pudding. You wouldn't know that it was dairy and gluten free given the richness of each bite. Service was friendly, but never overbearing. The menu was interesting without being try-hard. A wonderful experience from start to finish!

Yelp
Visiting from out of town and met locals here. Charming restaurant. Our waitress was excellent very attentive, helpful and friendly. We started with the falafel plate and the sourdough both very tasty. I had the mushroom potstickers which were excellent. Very nice selection of vegetarian options and delicious

Yelp
Excellent food, atmosphere, and service! The waitress we had was attentive, but gave us lots of space to enjoy the rooftop dining experience, and the menu options were varied and change every day. Really lovely experience, a little pricey, but good for special occasions!

Yelp
The food is great, wine is decent. Service is great. Very nice inside and perfect for an elevated dinner.

Yelp
When we saw that this place was called "diner," we expected a much different vibe. We were very pleasantly surprised. My sister and I made a reservation for a Thursday PM and this place was pretty packed upon entering, so I am glad we did. We ordered the Sourdough Pita Mezze Plate as a starter to share. Each item was well curated. The little orange tomatoes were so perfectly sweet. The pita bread and the hummus with chili oil was divine. For a main course, we ordered 2 dishes to share between the two of us -- the organic double cheeseburger and the gnocchi + matsutake mushrooms. The burger was simple, but very nicely done. The gnocchi was so pillowy and melted in our mouths. The matsutake mushrooms were also delicious and have a meat-like texture. I wanted a glass of wine, but the price at $14/$15 per glass felt a little steep. I ended up getting a beer instead. Overall great experience!

Yelp
Everything we ate and drank was delicious. Grilled sourdough tomato toast, fish tacos, tagliatelle, and hazelnut cake with a wonderful chocolate coconut pudding in top. The limeade was refreshing, gingery, and not too sweet. Service was exactly what was needed. The ambiance was young people with money and families eating out. It was the kind of restaurant where you feel like you could walk in, order anything, and leave happy.

Yelp
The absolute best thing in Bozeman, and one of the most memorable meals we have had while traveling. We were skeptical that a place that calls itself a "diner" with wildly ranging dishes on the menu like banh mi (always a red flag for me, as a Viet), kebabs, tacos, and house-made pastas, could succeed. But boy did they. I typically don't like trout, and the flathead trout tacos bowled both of us over. I still think of those tacos sometimes. The menu has since changed, but we ordered an Asian sauteed greens dish to share for some veg, and it exceeded my expectations. Their kamut noodles are obviously their specialty, so we got tagliatelle that was the perfectly consistency and exploding with flavor. The only drawback is their drink menu is a little short, and I think a lot of the food would be boosted by a wine pairing.

Yelp
This dining experience was everything we hoped for. From the friendly staff to the ambiance and of course the flavorful food, it was really great!!

Yelp
I did not take pictures and I am annoyed! The food here is excellent! The chef is of up for the James Beard award! We always get the fried carrots and pork tamales- so freaking good! Try to sit at the bar to watch them cook! Desserts are great too, and the have organic wine! 10/10 would recommend!

Yelp
A charming restaurant in Bozeman! All around a wonderful experience and service. I had the beef kabobs and my husband had the NY strip. Both meals were extremely flavorful and delicious. But our favorite part of meal was the sourdough app!!

Yelp
Okay, adorable! Stumbled upon this place the other night and so glad I did. I regrettably was one of those customers who didn't realize it was near closing time. Montana summers will do that to ya. After I sat down and realized the time I told the waitress I was so sorry and that we will leave. She insisted it was fine and they were still open! Im so glad we stayed because holy cow this place did not disappoint. As a gluten free foodie I was in heaven. A little expensive but perfect for a date night spot. The atmosphere is *chefs kiss*. Will 100% be back to try more of their menu, the staff were delightful as well.

Yelp
Great coffee!!! Really good and just the right temperature. It's a classic diner with diner food.

Karen T.

Yelp
Ambiance is great! Service was poor, with one menu item FORGOTTEN and a SLOW delivery on the rest. The food lacked flavor and quality...more like fast food. We had visited over a year ago and LOVED the FOOD and service. So, for a table of 5, with a 3/2 split, WHY can't they do a 60/40 split of the bill? We should have sent back for separate checks, but were too stunned. SAD to give up on a place we once loved. Wasn't even crowded! NO MORE!

Yelp
Giving five stars because my food was really good and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I had the opportunity to sit at the bar and watch the cooks work which is really pleasant. They keep a very clean kitchen and it's not chaotic. I had polenta with chicken, which was pretty good. The only negative comment I would have is that the staff needs training on how to use the espresso machine because they have a very nice machine but aren't using it as it should be used.

Yelp
This was one of the BEST fine dining experiences in Bozeman I have ever had. We had a rooftop seating on a beautiful day. Staff was super friendly! Wine selections were phenomenal. Tahini sauce with the falafel was so flavorful with a wonderful bite to it. And the freshest salad to go with it! Basil, fresh greens, lemony dressing. Delicious! Three cheese ravioli was so fresh and balanced with a perfect coating of the parmesan on top! Beautiful beautiful restaurant, will come back again!

Yelp
The most flavorful food in Bozeman! I was impressed with everything from the atmosphere, to the service, to the interesting menu and delicious meals. Will definitely be back. Recommend reservations.

Yelp
Great "farm to table" menu items, but I would stick with some of the more common dishes (like the bolognese), because the they can get a little too complex. Great ambience, quite busy, so I would suggest making a reservation

Bliss E.

Yelp
No reservation, so had to wait a while, BUT boy was it worth it! Everything was so fresh and nuanced. No need for heavy seasoning as the fresh ingredients took center stage. Perfection!

Nancy S.

Yelp
We had high hopes, but service ruined this place for us. 3 of us were celebrating my husband's birthday on our last night in Bozeman. After almost 20 minutes from being seated, our server, Alice, approached. She seemed pleasant and they were busy, so that was fine. Orders were placed and wine brought out. Poured out a taste and when we approved, she put the bottle down and walked away. Apparently serving the wine isn't part of her job description. First courses came out (shishito peppers and pastas) and they were good! We were encouraged! And that was the last we saw of Alice or any other food for almost an hour. Dirty starter dishes sat on our table, wine went unpoured, had to flag someone down for water refills. No check-in or update on our entrees. Finally, my husband got up to find her and ask that if the entrees weren't fired yet, to just cancel them and we'll take the check and go as it was well after 9pm. Turns out they were just up - we wish we had been able to cancel. The beef kebabs were so overdone my teenage son, who eats everything and was starving at this point, declared them almost inedible. The butter chicken, however, felt underdone and rubbery. And for $39, expected more than 1 chicken thigh strategically cut into 4 slices and spread over a large quantity of white rice (though the sauce underneath was good). Alice never checked in after the entrees came so we had no opportunity to share this - but I don't think she/they would have cared as they cleared half-eaten plates of food w/out any comment or concern. The kicker was when she then walked by and, literally, tossed the bill on our table w/out a word. I was shocked at how rude that was. I went to pay the bill at the hostess stand, because who knew when we'd see our server again. I voiced frustration about the service to Maia, and rather than empathizing, she seemed surprised that we would complain and quickly rang up our card w/out further comment. I tried to give them a chance to acknowledge, apologize, justify...anything. I understand kitchens get backed up on busy nights which is when customer service can make all the difference, but they were just so smug and rude about it. It ruined a birthday celebration and our last night w/our son. There are many better options in Bozeman - Little Star Diner isn't nearly as good as they seem to think they are.

Matthew D.

Yelp
The food was some of the best i've ever had, especially for Bozeman! Please visit this awesome, truly local business. I would give them a 6/5 stars if I could.

Mary K.

Yelp
Best food in Bozeman, great people, great service, and such a fun and sweet atmosphere.
google avatar

Ailani H.

Yelp
I don't know how anyone could give this restaurant anything under 5 stars. Every dish we had was divine. Best meal in Bozeman hands down. Love!!
google avatar

Eva K.

Yelp
Great food! Yummy food, but not ridiculously priced. I would recommend the humus and pita plate, gnocchi plate, and the butterfly pasta dish. So yummy!

Nibbles B.

Yelp
Not a diner. Had OK service. Decent menu. Good food, but nothing spectacular. Drinks are fine. There are better choices in Bozeman. I would go again though.
google avatar

Amber W.

Yelp
Always an amazing dining experience. The atmosphere and food are stellar. What's even better is the furniture. The custom wooden chairs and tables are an experience all to themselves.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
Great cozy spot with delicious food! The sourdough bread is amazing, the fried carrots were delicious as well. We also got the meatballs and a special beef stew which was very flavorful and tender.
google avatar

Miki E.

Yelp
Honestly, one of the best meals we've ever had. Interesting and inventive menu. Shared the kamut sausage pasta, lamb kabobs, and polenta. Also enjoyed the wine list which focuses on natural wines. Sweet and knowledgeable server. Highly recommend and would definitely visit again. Our only suggestion would be to add after dinner drinks to the menu (to accompany the fabulous donuts).
google avatar

Yelp
Are you searching for the best breakfast in bozeman? Look no further than Little Star Diner! It's cool urban and cozy vibe was the best place to grab brunch on a snowy morning. The staff was very accommodating and got us coffee while we waited for our table. We ended up getting seated earlier than expected. Coffee was super tasty and went well with our sour cream doughnuts & cherry jam! Entrees were stellar! The huevos rancheros with pork was so flavorful and had a nice little kick of spice. The polenta base was perfect for soaking up all the yummy sauce. The bread on the fried egg sandwich was 10/10, and the morning bun had great sweet undertones! You really can't go wrong here!
google avatar

M G.

Yelp
Sometimes I rate a place 5 stars on a relative basis, like when I review a sushi place in the middle of nowhere and find it to be great sushi for the area, even if it wouldn't be 5 stars in a coastal, big city. I was at Little Star once several years ago, before we made the move to Montana, and didn't really remember it. Today, we went for breakfast and I had the Huevos (vegetarian version) while two of the others I was with had the meat Huevos. We were all blown away by how good it was...the flavors were complex, the polenta was amazing (I generally am not a polenta fan and was expecting tortillas, but their polenta is light and crisp and better than a tortilla with the fried eggs). This is a 5 star place in any city. And for those of you from California, stay away. All of Montana is awful. You should stay in California.
google avatar

Jeayoon L.

Yelp
Came here twice, once for dinner and once for brunch. Both times were excellent. For dinner I had the steak with chimichurri over a bed of delicious juicy sweet tomatoes. It was perfect. For brunch, the egg biscuit with root vegetables, a side of pork sausage patty and the hot chocolate, which was yummy and not overly sweet.
google avatar

Andrew M.

Yelp
Epic - I only regret I can't give them 6 stars. We had a Sunday Brunch and sat at the bar. The service was attentive, communicative and just good. Sitting at the bar we got to watch the kitchen team prepare the food. They are meticulous and focused. When they hit a slack period they clean up and reset their stations. Very professional. They are taking very high quality ingredients and churning out some seriously tasty food. The ambience is very nice too. Lots of handmade no-nails furniture - is it a bit hipster, well yeah, but get over yourself. We had: Sourdough pancakes - excellent Fried rice - excellent Huevos rancheros - amazing the fried polenta is wow Breakfast burrito - not what I was expecting way more deelish Side order of a biscuit with rhubarb jam - best biscuit I've had in years. If you're in Bozeman, and you don't swing by, you've missed an opportunity.

M B.

Yelp
I wanted to love this place. Friends had given good reviews and the sustainability and farm to table vibe is great. Unfortunately, the food was so salty it was hard to eat. There was also a problem with congruence of ingredients on the plate, they just didn't make sense. Service was great, waitress was knowledgeable and so kind.

Allie S.

Yelp
Food was amazing!! I got the tamales which I don't usually even like tamales so I'm not sure why I went that route but SO glad I did. This place has turned me into a tamale believer. Waitress was super attentive, helpful and friendly!
google avatar

Cynthia R.

Yelp
Excellent farm-to-table dining experience where everything on the menu (including the cocktails and wine) is excellent, and the service is extraordinary. A bit of a splurge, but totally worth it for what you're receiving. I hope to visit Bozeman again before too long and return!

Ari E.

Yelp
The food was just okay . It took awhile for it to come out. We had "tomato toast" which is kind of like bruschetta. The tomatoes were delicious but it was a bit too much salt on it and the bread was a little burnt. Also got the hummus which again was okay. The crispy polenta was, according to my mom, "terrible". My step-dad who is from Morocco did not care for the lamb kebab. I got the tagliatelle which I enjoyed, but thought could do with a little less salt in the sauce. That's a personal preference though.

Tashi S.

Yelp
Love LSD! Great food, excellent service! Would go there everyday if I could afford haha
google avatar

Shawna W.

Yelp
Went for sunday brunch. Place was packed but got a seat right away. The food took about 20 minutes to come out but was worth the wait! The servers were working so hard delivering up the stairs. Would like to come back and try other options beside breakfast. They people sitting next to us looked like they also really enjoyed there lunch. The fresh donuts were fluffy and light, one of the best that I have ever had. My son and I were fighting over the last one!

Darin B.

Yelp
What a pleasant place with remarkably fresh and delicious food. Dropped in (without a reservation) and were seated at the bar. The bar should be called the chef's table since it is a front row seat to what is happening in the kitchen - seeing fresh happen before our eyes. The trout tacos with house made salsas, the New York strip over a dressed, peppery salad and a ginger lemon-lime drink were unique, fresh and oh so good. Did I mention fresh? Yes, fresh as in new, clean and unfiltered goodness. If you're looking for some self-care, treat yourself to this place. Exceptional in every way.

Dan L.

Yelp
Wow. What a fabulous place! Came for dinner on a Saturday night - the place was hopping and the service and food was still excellent. All the pasta is house made, and my bolognese over fresh spinach tagliatelle was amazing! Also had the fried carrots and sweet pea salad as starters - both incredible. All of the furniture in the place, including the bar, is hand made - creates a wonderful ambience. Overall, five solid stars. Great food. Great people. Great menu (lots of very interesting items). Highly recommend - do not miss if you are visiting. If you live here, you must already know about this spot!

K K.

Yelp
This place has the most incredible, thoughtful and intentional food. All of the ingredients are soooo fresh and the dishes are so creative and thoughtfully put together. My boyfriend got the pork with polenta and he said it was the best meal he's had in a long time! He loved it so much! At first glance at the menu I thought their portions would be small, and I was definitely wrong! They are perfect portions and the entrees are so filling. And the price for such masterful dining is so reasonable and inexpensive! We both are very excited to come back and try everything on the menu!
google avatar

Daria L.

Yelp
Little Star Diner is the best restaurant in Bozeman, hands down. The menu ebs and flows with the seasons, making each dish new and unique. Every item is cooked to perfection. Everything from the bread to the cheese is made in house from local produce and goods. Dishes are well balanced and finished with an enormous amount of green and herbs. The wine and beer menu is unique, and well thought out. A must go.
google avatar

Joanne O.

Yelp
Farm to table amazing dinner!! Attentive wait staff and farm fresh selections. Go! You will not be disappointed!

W S.

Yelp
Wild game is a relatively common sight among restaurants in Bozeman. Duck is a dish that sets the excellent apart from the merely good. I have eaten plenty of duck, in all sorts of variations, and the duck on Little Star Diner's menu is arguably the best I have ever eaten. Perfecting duck is certainly not an easy task, but the chefs came as close to this adjective as is possible. I cannot recommend a dish in Bozeman as highly as the Confit Duck here. Thank you to the chefs who prepared my meal!!
google avatar

Maurice M.

Yelp
Dreams do come true when you wish upon a little star diner! Just amazing and great quality!
google avatar

Nick S.

Yelp
Just blew into Bozeman from San Diego and warmed up on some fabulous grub served with a smile. Locally sourced, tasty, large portions of wonderful tasting eclectic menu - wonderful lunch spot. really appreciated the handmade decor and aesthetic of warm, charred wood. Had and recommend the Falafel, Lamb Curry, and Kamut Bowl.

Shara V.

Yelp
Most restaurants in Bozeman are clearly trying to be bougie and yet the quality of the attempted bouge does not hit, not even close... it comes out with uninspired and lackluster food. But Little Star is the rare exception, the ambience is cozy, understated and effortless. The food is exceptional, fresh and deliciously full of flavors that work so well together. Especially the trout fish tacos, I ordered them simply because I love tacos. I was slightly skeptical of the trout but from the very first bite I was quite literally mind blown with how good the taco was. To put it simply, they exceeded my expectations in every way! I only wish little star would bring back brunch... Their breakfast burritos are bomb. And the tater tots that came with the pork the other night was a textural experience that makes me never want to eat a basic tater tot ever again. If you ever do brunch again, please add the tater tots.
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem! I am honestly a little hesitant to write this review as Little Star is one of the only spots in Bozeman where you don't have to wait hours for breakfast. I eat vegan and it's often hard to find options in Bozeman. Little Star makes a falafel that is awesome! They will also change things on the menu to accommodate for your diet ...and they are nice about it (unlike Cateye). My son ordered French toast, not even on menu, and they made some for him. Service is spot on and everyone is friendly. Nice and clean with wonderful atmosphere!

Yelp
In town for the weekend. The lady and I decided on a big trip from the Windy City. We googled diner and google told us to go to this place. Why would you do that google? If I can make a suggestion, don't get the eggs Benedict. The mixture of the biscuit, maple syrup, sweet squash, overdone poached eggs, and a yellow cream they claim was hollandaise was unappetizing to say the least. I'm still feeling the results of what can only be known as the Benedict Arnold of eggs Benedicts. #desantoldyouso

Yelp
Pure class. Farm to table done exquisitely well. A great authentic hospitality vibe from the staff. The building is awesome with great indoor and outdoor options. Hip, fun, delicious. Low Key One Of The Best Restaurants in town.
