Beirut Palace Owner Closes Royal Oak Restaurant, Citing Parking Issues | Eater Detroit

"This sushi restaurant is part of a group of local operators who have sued the city over development and parking decisions, arguing those moves have harmed downtown businesses; the group also made some public claims in July about other restaurants’ fates that were later shown to be overstated." - Brenna Houck

We ordered the Lumpia and it was good. The Spicy Salmon roll and Spicy California roll were very good. We also had a small ginger salad that was delicious. I ate all the Pancit Canton because I don’t like wasting food, but it was way too salty. It would have been fine if it was less salty. I normally would rate a place 3 stars if the entree wasn’t good but we really enjoyed the rest of the food here so I’m rating this place 4 stars and we will go back and try something else. I really wish they had Pancit Bihon because that’s our favorite Pancit with the clear noodles, hopefully they will add that to the menu. The staff are very friendly, the service was great and the food came out quickly. The prices are fair. We will be back again soon.

Last night was our first time at Little Tree, and it was so yummy! Our waitress Gabi was very attentive and knowledgeable of the food and drink menu, pointing us in the right direction for what we wanted. It was a great experience, and we will definitely be back!

Google
Little Tree Sushi Bar is a gem waiting for you at Rochester & Hamlin. I enjoyed sushi and a hot dish so plentiful I'm taking some home. Was impressed with the variety of hot dishes, ramen bowls & appetizers at reasonable prices. The ambiance is welcoming and server/hostess Gabby was great.

Google
10/10 for overall experience! Nice big parking lot, plenty of open room seating, tables, booths or sushi bar. Was greeted right at the front, sat immediately and ordered miso soups and ginger salads. Both great! Sushi was so fresh and very reasonably priced. We had three rolls, the Lava, Shrimp Tempura and Two Flavor. Amazing! Two flavor was my favorite. Also the bathrooms were nice and bright and very clean. Our server and everyone there was extremely friendly. We had an incredible time and we’ll definitely be back asap!

Google
Loved this place .. it has a great menu with delicious food! The bbq pork was amazing and had that great smokey flavor. The sushi had that perfect balance of spice and substance (basically the spice enhanced the flavor rather than distract). The noodles were also delicious with that perfect smokey flavor.

Google
One day i was looking for sushi in my area and I came across this place. I went in to dine and the food was delicious. I ordered the California king sushi roll which included king crab and i ordered the fried lobster roll with 1 yellowtail nigiri and 1 coconut sake. It was all very fresh and delicious. If anyone is wondering this is the same Little Tree sushi restaurant from Royal Oak. The Royal oak location has relocated here. Overall good service , good food and a good laid back atmosphere. I will be visiting again.

Google
The food was really delicious. Really authentic. The service was really fast. They bought the food out quickly. It was very fresh I could tell. The favor was great. I definitely would eat there again. The staff was very friendly and helpful with the menu options. They made great suggestions on what to try.

Yelp
Fantastic service, vegetarian friendly. Always happy coming here. Usually not a huge wait.

Yelp
We don't get into this part of town often but the nephews insisted. They claim it's the best sashimi and tuna roll in southeast Michigan. Let's go see... It's a large place with tables, booths or seating at the bar. The decor isn't much to write home about, but it's comfy and clean. I started off enjoying Red flying fish roe or Tobiko. Highlights from the table included: the Shrimp Tempura Hand Roll, the Spider roll and the Salmon roll. For me, the California King roll was the show stealer. Not sure how they were able to get such a fresh taste to the Alaskan king crab, but it's a winner! The service was terrific. Very efficient. I drink a ton of water, so I appreciate places that keep the glasses full and other curiosities. Keep in mind I'm no connoisseur, but I thought every roll I ate tasted great. It was the miso soup that got me. If it were possible, a bit gamey and too salty. Come try it, it could be just me! 10/25

Yelp
My fave place most especially if Kaylin V. is around. Food was awesome, highly recommended. Jimbo and Elmer always having a competition in making sushi. Service was top notch as usual. The place was bigger than their old place at Royal Oak.

Yelp
Great flavors and amazing service. Gabby is wonderful. So glad we found the new location. We were avid Royal Oak goers but now we have Rochester to enjoy.

Yelp
Finally, a decent sushi spot! I came here to see what the hoopla was all about and I absolutely loved it here. Walking in, the place is clean, has ample seating and the prices are pretty much fair and on point. I scoured the menu and realized they have a nice variety of options to choose from. I was hungry but not dinner entree hungry. I started off with Miso soup and ended up getting 5 salmon niri for my dinner plate. Soup came out and was delicious and the Niri was fresh and very tasty. My server was fantastic and really knew his stuff. He checked in on me a few times and answered the few questions that I had during my meal. I would gladly come here again in a heartbeat.

Yelp
SERVICE WAS GREAT - our server was a sweetheart and was very knowledgeable about all of my questions and we were greeted immediately Food was probably the most mediocre food i've ever eaten. i lived in asia for three years and have been eating sushi my whole life. the "tuna" tasted like it was out of a bag and its grey... ginger salad was good and the veggies were fresh, still, nothing out of this world though. i wanted a california roll with salmon - which was not on the menu - and they kindly provided exactly what i asked for. even then it just didn't taste like anything?? i don't know. i also ordered the lumpia off of the filipino section and it was very good. definitely satisfied with that. the restaurant itself was very clean and well lit. the options for entrees looked pretty promising. i could've just had a bad visit or ordered the wrong things but who knows. would possibly give another try for the entrees in the future the sushi in the picture has soy sauce on it from me

Yelp
Had a great evening meal here with some friends. They have a full bar, traditional sushi bar, amazing service and a convenient location. Our group went there expecting sushi, but we came away with so much more. I loved the chicken fried rice, it was really unique and flavorful. The fried noodles were also great, as was our dragon roll. I would definitely come here again.

Yelp
Second time here and this visit was a let down. It started out great with appetizers of lumpia and shumai. Next up was one of the best squid salads I have ever had. Here is when things started to get rocky. Hubby hot chicken and pork adobo. It WAS very good except for the abundance of whole peppercorns in it. If you took a bite, you better be careful you did not bite one or the intense pepper level blew out your taste buds. But that still was not the worst. The worst was my dinner - sushi. At a sushi bar. I ordered a raw scallop as it was so great last time and it is one of my favorites. They sliced it thin and (egad!!!) topped it with sliced green onion and a very light sauce. F&$k. Total waste of a raw scallop. On to the next piece of fish - a squid. Never had it before and hated the texture - not their fault. Ordered "lobster" sashimi and got (presumably) lobster salad. Honestly, it could have been any diced fish in mayo. Pretty tasteless and I did not finish it. Also ordered a yellowtail and scallion roll that was nasty. It did not taste like the fish was bad but the rice tasted like it was from a few days ago, the fish had a very fishy taste and I could not even eat half of the roll. Now I am a sushi lover and I have gotten to-go boxes for all leftovers in the past. This is the first time I have left sushi on my plate with no interest in taking it home. As soon as we left, my normally very polite husband said that was the most disgusting sushi he has ever eaten...and I concur. For a sushi restaurant, whoever prepared this sushi should be ashamed.

Yelp
As customers of the original Royal Oak location, we couldn't wait for this place to open driving by frequently. Surprisingly (or not), the interior is very similar to the OG. Open concept. Dark wood. Plenty of televisions. Miranda, our server, was so nice and personable. She checked on allergen ingredients for us and was well versed with the menu. Staff all around were friendly and checked on us throughout our visit. We ordered veggie sushi rolls and the vegetable spring rolls. Sushi was beautifully presented and fresh. Sitting rolls weren't greasy and come with homemade pineapple dipping sauce. Not gooey plum sauce. Very unique. For mains, we ordered Yaki Udon and Pad Prik. Decent portions and enough to share or take a little home. Great flavor and heat (pad prik). Drink list is solid. We ordered a glass of wine and a beer. Both reasonably priced. Nice background music at a pleasant volume. Great 70's, 80's, and 90's. Big parking lot and easy to get to. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
To all my sushi lovers! This place is the very best, I'm so happy they moved from Royal Oak to Rochester. The parking is so much better and you don't need to pay to park. I have been dining here since 2005 and never once been disappointed. They now are serving Ramen and the quality and freshness is top notch. Upon waking in you're immediately greeted and asked if you wish to sit at the bar, dining room or sushi bar. If you ever dined in Royal Oak you will immediately feel such a sense of comfort when walking through the doors because it looks exactly the same! They have a full service bar and offer many appetizers and entrées, from the menu to choose from and many choices from the sushi menu and don't forget to check out the Exotic board. Spread the word to all your friends and family letting them know Little Tree is now located at Rochester Rd and Hamlin. Let's all welcome Little Tree to Rochester and please be sure to stop by to say hello to the best sushi chefs around! I promise you won't be disappointed!

Yelp
Same aesthetic and quality food you expect at the Royal Oak location, but now in Rochester Hills. Dined on a Tuesday and no reservations needed. Service was slow to refill drinks and check in, but we'll definitely be back for the sushi!

Yelp
Was really sad this turned out to be such a disappointment after reading what seemed to be great reviews from the Royal Oak location. The most bland Asian food ever! Spring roll was more an egg roll with huge weird mushroom chunks. Curry sauce on chicken dish was thick & gross. Sushi was the best part, but even the spicy ones had little flavor. We had food left over but didn't bother to take it home as knew we wouldn't eat it. Waiter was nice & happy hour offered cheap beer, but can't believe we spent $85 on that!

Yelp
My favorite sushi restaurant! I was so sad when their location in Royal Oak closed. I waited to long for the new Rochester location to open and wasn't disappointed. Same amazing menu, great ambiance and service. I love that they have unique vegetarian rolls that you can't find anywhere else!

Jan G.

Yelp
Food was good but our waitress was not pleasant at all. She did not seem to know the menu when we asked specific questions. She could have cared less about serving us. Otherwise the sushi was good (not outstanding). We will probably return but I do hope they educate their wait staff about how to interact with and serve customers.

Debra A.

Yelp
Take a walk back in time to the OG little tree sushi restaurant! It is the exact same on the inside at the Rochester location as was in Royal Oak but dare I say it's better :) grateful that the owners decided to relocate foods great !

Yelp
The service was terrible. The weight staff analogible $50. I left hungry and I was a bum rush. Started there and I get more at Sam's Club for 10 Bucks. And now I'm gonna shark in my car.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Service is great. Great selection of both sushi and other traditional Asian dishes.

Amy F.

Yelp
Same atmosphere and great sushi they had in Royal Oak but now there is easy parking. Service was great and love their Saketinis

Deanne G.

Yelp
Tried this restaurant for dinner tonight but they do not have enough staff. Never was greeted or told how long for a table. A waitress stormed out of the restaurant right in front of us. Clearly they have issues. Bummer. We were looking forward to it.

Yelp
Best sushi I've had in a long time! There is a good selection of fish and seafood. The ingredients tasted really fresh. The sushi was rolled well. We loved the Veggie Delight roll. We also had the Philippine fried rice, which was excellent. The ambiance is nice for a good night out. There are plenty of tables and ample seating space. I will definitely come back!

Yelp
The Service is great!! Clean place with great Asian Cuisine. It's a must try!! LOVE the chicken Yakisoba!!

Yelp
Carl was an amazing and very polite server. (I'm sorry Carl we thought we could reopen our tab to tip you more again on the QR code) The food is always amazing and delightful, some of the most authentic Filipino food in the area. Everything is perfect every time I visit and I would recommend to everyone! The restaurant itself is quite pretty and warm.

Yelp
We loved Little Tree Sushi Bar when it was in Royal Oak and were excited to try the new location. When we arrived at about 6:35 pm it was busy but not packed. We were seated right away. They appeared to be understaffed which seems to be the norm at most restaurants these days. We were not in a hurry so initially we were not concerned. We waited a while for our waitress to bring us menus and take our drink orders. My husband ordered a Diet Coke. It was pretty much flat. My wine was good. When our drinks arrived we ordered appetizers. We waited quite a while for the appetizers and my husband wanted another Diet Coke. It took several attempts to flag down our waitress who had not checked in on us once while we were waiting. My husband could see her chatting with other staff but he finally caught her attention. She brought him another Diet Coke and apologized for the wait on the appetizers. She said they only had one chef and asked if we would like to place our dinner order while we were still waiting for the appetizers. We were understanding of the situation and said we would like to place our order. We had been there nearly an hour already and it was not nearly as busy as when we arrived. A little later we noticed that other people who had arrived well after us were eating their food. Once again my husband flagged down our waitress and asked her why they were getting food and we were still waiting on our appetizers. Once again she said they only had one chef. My husband asked if she had checked with the chef to see what the hold-up was and she said she had not. Then she said she could check if we wanted her to. My husband said yes and asked her to find out how much longer it was going to take. She came back a few minutes later and said the chef missed our order and that he was starting to prepare it now. By this time it was well past 8 pm. We still did not have our appetizers or dinner and had no idea how much longer it would take. They close at 9 pm and we did not want to have to scarf down our food while they were cleaning up so we told her to cancel our order. We were there for more than 90 minutes and didn't have one bite of food. Our waitress was completely inattentive and didn't seem concerned at all. I don't know if she is inexperienced, lacks training, or is just unconcerned. Unbelievably she brought us a bill for the diet Coke and wine! I can't rate the food because we never got any. The Diet Coke was flat. The service was terrible, a big ZERO. I am bummed because I loved the Royal Oak location.

Yelp
Better priced than most other sushi places in the area, also the food itself is really good! Will definitely be back

Yelp
The best sushi in metro Detroit is back. Just had lunch at Little Tree in Rochester Hills. It was fantastic. I used to go the Royal Oak location for many years before it was closed during Covid. The sushi is as great as ever at the new location. Same sushi chefs and quality!

Stephanie B.

Yelp
Yum! Fantastic sushi! Love that the same ambience has been carried over from royal oak!

sally C.

Yelp
Sushi was OK. Do NOT get the paella. It is not traditional Spanish paella. It is a variety of not fresh, fishy, extra salty tasting seafood with sauteed onions and peppers in a sauce that looked like enchilada sauce and didn't taste much different Overall extremely unappetizing.

Emily Y.

Yelp
Just as good as I remember! The new restaurant has a great mix of the old decor and new. Everything was very clean. Staff is getting the hang of things, but to be honest they did a wonderful job for just opening. Aimee was wonderful. The sushi/fish is very fresh. I would highly recommend Little Tree!

Dan K.

Yelp
Service was great. Kristin was our server. She was awesome. Sushi was awesome. I will be back for sure. Went in for lunch today btw

Mary P.

Yelp
Great veggie options on the menu, and some of the best veggie rolls in the area. Easy to make vegan, and still very tasty!

Jen B.

Yelp
Miranda was absolutely fantastic! The food was exquisite, the atmosphere was clean and inviting, making it a wonderful addition to Rochester!

John R.

Yelp
Little Tree has wonderful Sushi and I love their Thai Fried Rice. I used to love their Royal Oak location and was really excited to see them open closer to home in Rochester Hills. The new dining room is really nice.

Claire P.

Yelp
Service was great! Everything came out so quick and was prepared correctly. They finally got their liquor license, so was able to enjoy some delicious raspberry sake! Food was delicious as well and super fresh. Can't wait to come back again!

Carly B.

Yelp
Best Sushi ever! Always fresh, and the best staff! They used to be located downtown royal oak and now are at Rochester & Hamlin

Nancy P.

Yelp
Went here tonight and was blown away!!!!!...Aimee was our server today... She was awesome!... The food was exceptional as usual..I chose the lava roll and the chicken pad thai...if you have not tried this place, you are missing out...thank you for coming to Rochester....

Frank B.

Yelp
We went today for lunch, saw some old familiar faces, great food, thank you for re opening.

Yelp
When I drove down the street it was a residential street and when I pulled up it was an ordinary home it was no way I was gonna knock on the door to ask if this was a sushi bar so know foos reviews just a location and bad navigation review

Bianca S.

Yelp
This is what we got after waiting for over 2 hours and it was absolutely DISGUSTING!!!!! The time role was fishy and over date, there's was gross, the California had no taste, the rainbow roll was slimy, the Philadelphia was flavorless and the lava roll was greasy.
