Durham Coffee Roaster Little Waves Wins International Award | Eater Carolinas

"A Durham-based micro roastery and subscription-driven coffee business that won Roast Magazine’s 2022 Micro Roaster of the Year for both product quality and a values-driven approach. Primarily Latina-owned and led by Areli Barrera Grodski, the operation emphasizes sustainability, equitable pay across the supply chain, and active community giving. Roasting out of a Lakewood neighborhood location, it produces roughly 60,000 pounds of coffee annually for the owner’s cafes, wholesale accounts, and a growing nationwide subscription base that expanded during the pandemic and helped the business avoid layoffs. Signature efforts include a 2020 dark roast called “Royal 7,” named for the seven locals who led the Royal Ice Cream Parlor sit-ins, with a portion of proceeds funding Feed Durham; leadership aims to scale past 100,000 pounds to enter the macro category and re-compete at a higher level." - Eric Ginsburg

How to Help North Carolina’s Local Food Makers During COVID-19 | Eater Carolinas

"As the roaster whose bags Cocoa Cinnamon relies on, Little Waves Coffee Roasters represents the product Cocoa Cinnamon would need to move — 230 bags per day — to sustain payroll, and selling one bag to each of Cocoa Cinnamon's Instagram followers would fund that for 72 days." - Jenn Rice

Yesterday (9/19/25) I received two bags of beans from Little Waves Coffee Roasters from my daughter who visited Cocoa Cinnamon in Durham NC. The roast date on both bags is 9/16/25. She was at the shop on 9/17, so they are incredibly fresh. Today I prepared them this morning as espresso trying to follow the roaster's recipe. I was very impressed with the quality of the beans and roast.

Don’t live in the area (in Alabama), but saw you on Omnivore so I had to order a couple bags. Your passion comes through in your product. Bags arrived in less than a week, impressive. I just want to state, this coffee is superb. Only tried it in pour over so far, but will be trying other brewing methods shortly. Amazing work.

Little Waves is simply the best coffee roaster we have ever encountered. Coffee after coffee, this incredible company continues to deliver. Light Roast aficionado? Their Ethiopian single origins will knock your socks off. Fan of Blends? They have you covered with unique offerings each month. Want a Decaf? Their Condor is better than other roasters full-caf. They do everything right - they support incredible farmers, they empower women, and they promote sustainability. Latte. Pour Over. Batch. Decaf. There is nothing more I could ask for. Buy Little Waves.

Fantastic cup of black coffee, I got the batch brew, an African blend, and it was flavorful and smooth. I highly recommend this place for the best cup of black coffee around.

Independent coffee roasters aren't too hard to come by these days but what beyond tasting great, makes coffee amazing is how it makes you feel. Knowing that a roaster strives to nurture the community within and beyond its walls, knowing that a roaster takes painstaking steps to care for the precious resource it serves, knowing that a roaster does everything within its ability to build a team of people who are taken care of and enter the shop full of respect each day... that makes for a different cup of coffee. Little Waves is more than coffee--it's a way of life; it's an inspiration; it is truly community in every sense of the word. Coffee is natural and will taste different years from now, but I will grow old remembering how Little Waves makes me feel.

We first received a bag of beans from here as part of a subscription. We were really happy and just started ordering bags directly. We love the coffee and look forward to ordering more in the future. We have mostly used for espresso and have been super impressed. Some of the best beans we've tried.
