LA’s Only Restaurant Dedicated to Food From Tianjin, China, Has Closed - Eater LA

"San Gabriel—New to Hilton Plaza is the second location of Liu Roast Fish. The menu, shared with their City of Industry location, features different seasonings for pan-roasted fish named after West Coast cities (Seattle, San Francisco and L.A.). Skewers and appetizers are also available. It replaces The Memory, a Sichuan restaurant that was a branch of Alhambra’s The Legendary." - Jim Thurman

Had an amazing time at this restaurant! The grilled fish was absolutely bursting with flavor—perfectly cooked, soaked in a rich, spicy broth with tons of garlic, peppers, and veggies. We picked the spicy level and it was just the right kick to wake up your taste buds! Loved the fun presentation on the hot plate, keeping everything warm and bubbling throughout the meal. The little details (like the sesame seeds, jalapeños, and vermicelli noodles) really made it feel authentic and satisfying. Also tried the crispy silkworm pupae—definitely an adventurous snack, but surprisingly addictive once you get into it! Cozy vibes, friendly staff, and solid menu. Highly recommend if you’re into bold flavors and something a little different from your usual dinner spot. 💥🐟🌶️

Google
This place serves some of the best grilled fish I’ve ever had! The fish is tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, with a rich and slightly spicy broth that’s packed with depth. The combination of green and red chili peppers, sesame seeds, and various side ingredients makes every bite delicious. The portion size is generous, and the flavors stay amazing until the last bite. The restaurant is clean, and the staff is friendly and attentive, making the whole dining experience even better. Highly recommend for anyone who loves grilled fish—definitely a must-try!

I came here having heard of their reputation of good roast fish, but didn’t expect them to have great skewers as well! The fish menu was really good. I ordered “mild” spicy and I could still cope with it just fine. The skewers have low salt options. They have the silk worm too. I grew up eating this and it’s not easy to find it in the US. The servers are very friendly and happy, pretty rare in this era!

Google
. Perfect service and perfect food . We came here for a family meal, and it was an amazing experience! The food came out incredibly fast and was packed with flavor. There’s a lot of unique meat options on the menu, which made the meal even more enjoyable and memorable. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic.

Google
One of the best fried fish in town, their fish was very flavorful and not dry. The staffs were friendly and service was fast. Also their skewers were on point with other stores. One of their special is having two flavors, satisfy both spicy and non spicy perfect for groups that don’t like spicy and one loves spicy and can still share.

11/7/2024 - Liu Roast Fish is a Chinese Northern-East crusine restaurant while the main dish of Red Grouper dish belongs to Chengdu crusine. The taste of all four dishes is very good. Our Waiter is very friendly and helpful.

This was my first time trying grilled Chinese fish and I loved every aspect of it. It was very easy to order and customize the type of fish, spiciness, and toppings, on the tablet. We ordered the Qing Jiang fish with tripe in two flavors: Liu’s Homestyle (Hot) and Golden Soup Garlic (Medium). The colors were no indication of the spice but I would recommend at least the hot spiciness level if you’re a spice lover. I ended up loving Liu’s Homestyle more and regretted not adding more toppings. They tuck it under the fish so that it absorbs all the flavor and marinates in the sauce for as long as possible. I also loved that the fish was piping hot at all times since it was served over a flame the whole time. I was really craving a scallion pancake but it turned out to be just alright. It was pretty doughy and there was no flakiness. I didn’t try the other two entrees of beef noodle soup and steamed milk buns but I was told they were just alright. Based on my experience of the fish alone though, I loved it.

Google
Liu Roast Fish is an absolute gem! The grilled fish here is cooked to perfection – tender, flavorful, and with just the right amount of char. The spice levels are customizable, so whether you prefer mild or fiery, they’ve got you covered. The side dishes were equally impressive, especially the garlic eggplant and crispy tofu. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. If you’re a fan of authentic Chinese grilled fish, this place is a must-try. I’ll definitely be coming back for more! Highly recommended!

Yelp
If you're looking for a place that serves amazing roasted fish, Liu Roast Fish is a must-try! We ordered the black cod, which was a massive portion--definitely enough for two people to share comfortably, and probably perfect for 3-4 people. They also gave us four complimentary side dishes, which was such a nice touch. I've been dining here for over two years now, and the quality has always been consistent. The fish is perfectly cooked, flavorful, and tender, and the overall experience never disappoints. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Good good good. Like the fish and slides so much, the bbq is also tasty but forgot to take photos.

Yelp
Craving some tasty roasted fish and flavorful Chinese dishes? Liu Roast Fish has you covered! We tried their whole roasted fish, and it was served hot and full of flavor. It was tender, perfectly cooked, and definitely delicious. We also couldn't resist their lamb skewer--it was juicy and packed with flavor! The quail was another standout dish: crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, and worth trying if you like unique meats.

The combination of flavors was impressive, and it definitely stands out as a more adventurous option. And don't miss their lamb noodle soup--warm, comforting, and perfect for any day. The ambience of the restaurant is spacious, and the service is friendly and attentive, making it a great spot to enjoy with friends or family. Overall, Liu Roast Fish offers solid dishes with lots of flavor. A great place to satisfy your cravings!

Yelp
I can't believe it took me six years to discover Liu Roast Fish! This spacious restaurant is beautifully decorated and has authentic Sichuan cuisine. Ordering from the iPad was a breeze, and our dishes arrived within minutes. The House Special Qing Jiang Fish was a standout packed with plenty of vegetables and, to our surprise, Spam!! We opted for the mild sweet and sour sauce, which had just the right amount of heat without being too spicy. The lamb and beef skewers were equally impressive, perfectly seasoned and utterly addictive. Their fried rice was so fluffy and the noodles were great too. I can't wait to come back and explore more of their menu!

Yelp
When it's James Wang approved, you know it's going to be a fantastic meal in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley) 老刘家 Liu Roast Fish" specializes in Chinese-style spicy hot pot, grilled fish and meat skewers. If you are a lover of spice like the numbing Sichuan peppercorns (like I am), then @liu_roastfish is definitely for you We had: Green Bean Soup, Lao Lius Potato Shreds, House Special Qing Jiang Fish, Beef Skewers (4), Lamb Skewers (4), Chicken skewers (4), Chicken skin (4)

Yelp
Not quite sure why this place has such low reviews but my visit here was pleasant. Service is bare minimum, which is expected for a joint like this. Food was great! You can select which fish you want, and then what flavors you want. So depending on your selection, it can make or break your experience. I decided to stick with the traditional chili oil flavor. Lamb and squid were pretty decent too. Reason why i didn't give it a 5 star was because I felt that a chinese place that specializes in fish should be using live fish. But i guess since it gets fried then soaked with sauce, not too important.

Yelp
We got the Qing Jiang fish with mild golden soup garlic sauce and added lettuce and tofu! The fish was served fresh and piping hot, soaking up all the bold flavors from the sauce buttery fish + aromatic sauce + steamed rice calls for the PERFECT bite for balance, we ordered skewers and vegetables, which were just as delicious. I can't wait to come back and try their other sauce combos!!
google avatar

Yelp
A very solid institution! The fish that we got was quite good, a very solid savory sauce with a combo of sichuan peppercorn cumin. Service was good, we ordered off the tablet at the table and food came out within 20 minutes or so. Would come back here again!

Yelp
The fish tasted good. They fried the fish first and cooked it with the sauce (you can choose the spicy level). But they overcharge the side items. We added conjac yam noodles ($4.99), silk tofu ($2.99), and cabbage ($2.99). For the price I paid, I was expecting the portion will be decent, came out we got the most was tofu compared to others. We only got a some very small chopped cabbage, and maybe total of 6 konjac yam noodles. To be honest, if I knew the add-on portion is so small, I wouldn't order them. When we went there for lunch, not busy at all, just one other table there. The place is tidy, not dirty. We only see one server. He only came took the order, brought us food, and last gave us a check. Never came back and check on us. Unsure if I will go back to this place.

Yelp
The place is amazing. We're a foodie blog called hungryladyla and to be honest we were not expecting too much. We knew it was gonna be good, but oh lord did we love every single plate we were offered. For us the desserts were the winners of the night

Yelp
Located in the Hilton plaza, we came here to try their popular spicy fish. The food didn't disappoint. We also tried the spicy mung bean noodles and lamb skewers which I recommend.

Yelp

Yelp
I got the black cod Chong Qing Style Picked Sauerkraut. I added tripe, quail egg, duck blood, soft tofu, century egg, bok choy and picked cabbage. If you like pickled, then this sauce is for you. The fish was tender and crispy. I ate all the way down to the bone. You got to try this spot.

Yelp
Their roast fish are the best: tender, fresh, soft, creamy and tasty! I order mild spicy and tastes really good. Their bbq eggplant is also the best; tastes like a n eggplant pudding. Bbq lamb skewers are also a must have.

Yelp
We tried their signature Grilled Fish, featuring one side with spicy seasoning and the other with garlic on black cod. We also enjoyed fresh cucumber salad, scallion tofu, crispy fried buns with condensed milk, and chicken chow mein. Overall, Lao Liu Jia Grilled Fish offers a delightful experience with diverse flavors that cater to every palate.

Yelp
This spot have pretty good spicy "mala" roasted fish-- that one order is enough to feed 4 people! Lots of rich "mala" flavor and the fish tasted fresh. Although, the service was a bit slow... took about 20 min for the fish to be done. I recommend giving this spot a try if you like spicy fish!
google avatar

Chester B.

Yelp
Love it! Their fish dish is the best thing after a long Friday at work and the alcohol helps. Comforting Asian food with spice and some alcohol to balance a busy work day.

Louis Z.

Yelp
Amazing service and food, very authentic Chinese flavor, the atmosphere is so Chinese and comfortable, the fish is definitely bomb! Sauce is good and portion is huge!

Yelp
I want to come back and try their black cod. The flavor here for the fish was pretty mild, but I wonder if my cousin's wife ordered mild as a spice level. The chicken cartilage skewers are amazing here. They're cooked perfectly and not overly dry. Unlike the lamb skewers, those were overcooked.
google avatar

Anthony Z.

Yelp
Roast fish, that's what you come here for. Everything else is down the drain. Just make sure you order a roast fish, some good sides to add to the fish, eat, and get out. Do NOT order the skewers, especially the small ones. To start, service is pretty bad, even for a Chinese restaurant. There seems to be miscommunications with orders, especially if you want to add orders. You overall have to be a demanding customer for them to come to your table and give you service, which is...not the best experience, especially considering I came here twice. It can get crowded on weekend nights, but I was seated immediately around 6PM on a Saturday and Sunday. The roast fish is pretty good, with a good amount of spice. A few sides added into the roast fish, with some rice is more than enough for 2 people, but not really enough for 3+. The price was pretty hard to justify considering how overpriced sides are, especially when you consider the quantity. The more sides you order, the less space they have to put everything in the tray, leading to diminishing returns. The skewers are so ****ing depressing, I was literally so upset on the price vs meat ratio. First, thinking the big skewers were too big, we ordered the small ones. I feel like they have a harder time putting the tic-tac sized portions of meat on the skewers, than me trying to eat the tic-tac sized meat off a metal skewer without trying to scrape my teeth. Just imagine an adult forefinger length of meat on a metal skewer, but with so little meat wrapped around the skewer you could see metal through it. I'm so upset I didn't get a picture. Again, do not get anything but the fish and sides, because this place does not do anything well but put the flavor in the fish.

Yelp
My boss took the office out to eat here and I was skeptical at first because I don't like the feeling of Szechuan, but to my surprise they balanced the spices so well that the numbing actually enhanced the flavor. I've never tasted anything as unique and flavorful as this. Luckily my boss and my other colleague speaks mandarin so it was easy to communicate with the server, but the food did take a long time to come out. We were seated in the back corner which felt very cozy while sharing a roasted fish.
