The Best Chinese Restaurants Around Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"Casual, family-run Liz trips lightly through Asia, offering tempura shrimp, orange sesame chicken, variously stuffed steam buns, excellent lo mein, Vietnam’s shaking beef, and KFC (Korea’s famous fried chicken, not the Colonel’s). The Scottsdale Quarter location belies the down-home vibe, where customers are often served by Liz herself." - Nikki Buchanan

Had a truly excellent meal at Liz Modern Asian when I was traveling to Scottsdale. We were shopping at the new Lego store across the street and jumped in about an hour before they closed. Not being a huge fan of chain restaurants, we were delighted to find that this was a family-owned establishment. The food was excellent and Liz herself came out to chat with us to make sure that everything lived up to our expectations. They even brought out a big bowl of fresh, homemade dumplings for our table to share. They were delicious. After chatting for a short while, we made our way out and, as we were leaving, Liz asked us if we wanted to wait a few moments she'd send us home with some fresh beef dumplings (the ones we had were pork)! Unfortunately, we were flying out the next day and couldn't take them. I would absolutely go visit with Liz and her family again the next time I'm in Scottsdale and I'd recommend you do the same if you're in the area. And def try the dumplings--they were epic.

Google
I visited during Arizona Restaurant Week, overall everything was ok. The dumplings I was not a fan of, the steamed buns would've been really good had the brisket not been so tough, the Korean fried chicken was good. The service was a little slow to start. When my party arrived we were the only one in the restaurant. Once more parties arrived service was quicker.

Very helpful and welcoming customer service. We had the Won Ton Soup and the Garlic Shrimp Noodles. The taste and flavor were spot on perfectly yummy. After trying the Won Ton Soup, it was so amazingly good that I didn't stop eating to take the pic. So the pic you get to see is my empty dish after all the delicious soup was eaten by me. Free parking is available on the street out front. More free parking is available in the nearby parking garage.

Happened to walk by during lunch and decided to pop in. So happy I found this little gem. Not only was it reasonably priced, but the food was full of flavor without being overly saucy. I had the Mongolian beef. The meat was tender and the veggies were crisp and well cooked. Probably one of the better Mongolian beef dishes I’ve had in a while (even from more expensive places). I also had the opportunity to try their wings. The tempura style breading was great! I tend to only write reviews if something stands out as really good (or bad). This place definitely stood out as a place I’d recommend. I will be back. Oh and bonus, the service was excellent.

Google
I love the food and service is great, so far everything we have tried is amazing. Highly recommended, my husband love the Korean fried chicken and I can't stop eating their fried rice. We can't wait to stop by and try other dishes 😊

Google
This place was awesome! Was in Scottsdale looking for a place to grab dinner with my sister and brother in law and came across Liz Modern Asian as I had inKind credits to use. When I saw the Google Maps rating I booked a reservation. No need as we were early and the first ones in the restaurants. This is a true mom & pop restaurant as the dad took our orders and the mom was in the kitchen. Meanwhile, their daughter was running around playing with a balloon and actually greeting customers when they came in. It was awesome! We ordered 3 dishes to share and they were all great. I can't imagine any of the other dishes being bad. For around $15 an entree, it was affordable in today's economy, too. Would 100% come back next time I'm in AZ.

Google
Ordered the Mongolian beef and what a disappointment. $15 for fatty meat in sweet sauce with oily rice. No veggies though pictures here do have veggies served with the meal. Portion was small and presentation awful. About the vegetables-myself and another guest called this out. Guess I should have known something was up as the place was empty. Guy working there offered them only when we called that out. By then what logic does this place have a 4.7?

Google
Orange chicken was amazing. Potstickers were best I’ve had. Great prices. Family run restaurant.

Yelp
My husband and I have been to Liz Modern Asian twice in the last two weeks! The family owned atmosphere is absolutely welcoming - casual for the Scottsdale Quarter but the quality of food is FANTASTIC. You must try the Korean Fried chicken!! And the desserts! So yummy Liz and her family are so attentive and we have enjoyed out experiences there so much we will 110% be back again for more! Whether you are looking for a place to eat in or to take out, you will be incredibly satisfied with Liz Modern Asian!

Yelp
I visited on a Saturday afternoon. Apparently this was the wrong day to visit. I entered and I could hear people in the back work and a child running, alternating between laughing and screaming. I called out hello multiple times. No answer. After reading the reviews and seeing the online pictures, I really wanted to try this place. So I waited 10 more minutes. I called out again when I saw a guy walk past the kitchen door. I asked if they was open. He stated, "Yes, I thought that someone was out here" as he pointed to a workstation that some had been working at. It was a beautiful day so I asked if I could sit outside. He said yes. One would have thought that he would have cleaned the dust off the space since the layer of dust on all the tables & chairs were obvious. But, no. I ordered quickly, as I'd had ample time to study the menu. When the food came, I realized after the waiter left that I needed soy sauce. I waited a few minutes to see if he'd come back to ask if I needed anything or if i could flag him down by peering through the windows. He was no where in sight. So I got my butt up and went inside. A lady was walking out of the back and she asked if i needed anything. I stated that I needed soy sauce as I grabbed one from a nearby table. She asked if the food was okay. I didn't have the heaet to tell the truth. The food. If was clear to me very early on that it totally wasn't the right day to eat here. The spring rolls were not your typical rolls. They were fried extra hard, very crispy so that whatever was inside wasn't tastable. The noodles in the garlic shrimp were very hard/stiff as well. Almost as if they were days old. However, the shrimp was good! The fact that after the food was dropped off at the table, no one came out to check on me. I have to go back inside & ask for a to-go box and my check. Knowing that I wasn't going to eat it later, I felt bad just leaving the food there. I don't think I'll return to Liz. Street and garage parking nearby. Accessible entrance.

Yelp
I had seen a well placed ad for this place and had it on my radar when the logistics worked. What an incredible disappointment. Came for a late lunch. We were told 4 items on the menu were not available, and the only vegetables available were onions and cabbage! The food dishes that we could/did order were major salt bombs. When you're done eating, you should feel good, not regret. One and done.

Yelp
Liz Modern Asian is located inside Scottsdale Quarter shopping area. We reviewed the menu and I was curious about the dish called cha siu chicken. Liz was very nice but never really explained what to expect. Maybe a language barrier? She said she was thinking of taking it off the menu. She did say it was essentially teriyaki chicken but yet they have that on the menu already. How confusing! In any event we decided to try it as a to go meal. While we waited Liz delivered a fried chicken dish to a couple. It looked good and Liz asked us if we wanted to change our order to this dish. We decided to stick with our order since fried is not the best for your health. The dish was ample and pretty similar to teri chicken. It wasn't as sweet. It wasn't anything out of the ordinary. She gave us a bucket load of rice. The restaurant is pleasant and clean. Street, valet and shared free covered parking. WiFi in larger stores.

Yelp
my husband and I had dinner for the first time here and it was such a great experience. I wanted something that wasn't on the menu and Liz went back to the kitchen and made it for me. then she showed us how to make it ourselves. we will definitely be eating there again.

Kimberley B.

Yelp
That was the worst meal that I have had in a very long time. Inedible. No service, no silverware, the food does not look like the pictures.

Treesuh G.

Yelp
This restaurant has sort of a fast food restaurant atmosphere but definitely was not FAST! There were three of us inside and another two tables of two were sitting outside, so it was not busy. When we arrived it was about 5 minutes before anyone came out to greet us. We ordered and the first meal came in a fairly timely manner. It wasn't piping hot and tasted like reheated leftovers (cashew chicken). The chicken breast was tough. The flavor was good, though very salty --though I do realize that most Asian food is pretty salty. The second meal came out about 5 minutes after the first. That person said it was good. The third meal came just as the first was finishing up! It was the only one that had clearly just been cooked and was both hot and fresh! Staff was nice; atmosphere was fast foodish; prices reasonable. While not a terrible meal, I will not return.

Yelp
Mixed review. Place had a nice location, but a little hard to find. Liz was very nice. Her staff was limited and her food, well, ok at best. Just not sure what to think. Here are some examples. Ordered spring rolls and pot stickers as appetizers. Spring rolls were large and dark brown from deep frying. Really dark brown. Stuffing was fine, but limited vegetables. Pot stickers were deep fried, not pan fried. Both items were brought to the table at the end of the meal. Orange Chicken dish came to the table as very large chunks of deep fried chicken covered with a nice sauce. It was nicely prepared and the best dish we ordered. Chicken Lo Mein consisted of a small portion of noodles that appeared to be fried. A few vegetables and small chicken pieces rounded out the dish. Very odd Lo Mein - noodles very firm and light brown. Had to ask for serving spoons to share the dishes. Summary The young man waiting on us was very inexperienced. He seemed to have limited support. Not sure what was going through in the kitchen but many, many errors. We gladly ate the food, but would not return. Not what we were looking for in a Chinese restaurant.

Yelp
This place is the best!!!! 5 stars!! Highly recommend!! I love small businesses and especially this one!! Liz, the owner, is such a kind, gracious, generous, and refreshing soul existing in the middle of the soulless Kierland shopping mall full of entitled boomers looking to human ATM their cash instead of giving back to the community. Liz and her husband and her staff were so kind to us when we dined here. The food was also delicious!!! I felt so bad for Liz and her staff due to the other types of customers they had to deal with when we dined here. There was this boomer woman who was constantly complaining about everything...complaining about meat being too fatty even though she ordered a fatty meat. It was disgusting to watch her be so dismissive with Liz's wonderful staff. Perhaps culture yourself a bit but that's what happens when you're in Kiereland....out of touch rich people!! It's like a White Lotus episode and I give major props to Liz for being such a great owner in a tough area. I hope her business thrives for years and can't wait to return!! Please support them and enjoy their delicious dishes!! Very authentic!!

Yelp
If you're like me who prefers to order or dine out in a restaurant that's not only very affordable with high quality FRESH HEALTHY food, then look no further. This restaurant definitely deserves 5 stars for their delicious food (particularly the flavorful WonTon soup) probably the BEST in Scottsdale. The service we received was beyond hospitable; attentive and personable. I look forward to returning, because it was a true delight to eat there. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Yelp
I completely DO NOT GET the high ratings from others. The front door and windows were filthy. The food was nearly tasteless. The inside ambiance was like a mom and pop with supplies and other items stacked on tables against the wall. Our food did not come out at the same time, and we had to ask twice before we received requested eating utensils. The food was nearly tasteless. The service was pleasant, but slow. They agreed to split our checks, but did so incorrectly. Did I mention the food was nearly tasteless? Not worth the trip. This "hole-in-the-wall" ambiance is not worthy of Scottsdale Quarter. Except for the poor ambiance, slow service, and tasteless food, everything was fine.

Yelp
Sparse decor. The cutest thing about this joint is 4 year old Elizabeth who the restaurant is named for. She will draw you a picture if you ask. Service was a bit slow. Didn't care for the boa bun. The cashew chicken dish was tasty.

Yelp
100/100 for Liz Modern Asian - the food is incredible. It's flavorful but light and they can adjust any dish to your dietary needs or requests. The ambiance and instagramable decor are on brand with their overall vibe and create an enjoyable atmosphere for anything from a lunch date to an epic group event. What really sets them apart is their hospitality - Liz, Howard, and their team are so kind, thoughtful, and abundantly generous. Liz Modern Asian hosted an event for the Top 40 Models of Phoenix Fashion Week about a month ago, and I've already been back twice since!!

Ian S.

Yelp
Friendly informal service. Very good North American style Chinese food. Particularly liked the dumplings

Mark G.

Yelp
Small portions are a thing here. Mongolian beef and orange chicken are in the pics. $8 for two small egg rolls?????. Look elsewhere for good Chinese in Scottsdale.

Austin A.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The lo mein and fried rice were my favorite. And the cherry ontop is they are family owned and so so nice. These are the type of places that deserve recognition. 5/5

Debbie M.

Yelp
Service was fabulous, but the food was even better! We ordered the Wonton Shrimp and Garlic Shrimp Stir-fry Noodles. Some of, if not the best Chinese food we've ever had! The owner brought over some buns and fried rice. Incredible! It was so delicious that we brought our son back the next night! Will most definitely be back!

Joseph V.

Yelp
simply the worst chinese food i have ever had. the only thing worse was the service. i don't see how they can be in business much longer

Justin H.

Yelp
OUT OF THIS WORLD! Brisket was unbelievable!!!! Had dreams about their food! A must try!
google avatar

Corey B.

Yelp
Everything was incredible! The food was menu was so good and they have great portion. Nice service. They have pretty amazing and authentic Chinese food. Each course was exceeded to my expectations. Love the food and excellent vegan food. The chicken was tender and was nicely seasoned. The Peking duck was pretty good food. They have a casual lunch dinner.
google avatar

Sydney D.

Yelp
HIGHLY recommend! The buns were incredible- very soft, and flavorful. Dumplings and wonton soup were great options to share amongst the table and were very tasty. For the main dishes we shared the chicken lo mein, Mongolian beef, and garlic shrimp noodles and each dish was my favorite. Fast service and owners were very kind and hospitable. A very clean, relaxed mom and pop restaurant. We will be back!

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today and couldn't have been happier. Our server was presumably Liz and she was an absolute blast. She recommended the fried rice, which was well seasoned and had a lot of protein. Next we tried the bbq pork and the friend chicken, both were excellent. The seasoning on everything was great and all of the dishes were exceptionally fresh. Portions are good but not huge, so plan accordingly. Will be back soon for great service and excellent food.
google avatar

Kelly G.

Yelp
Owner/Manager and staff were really kind and the amount of food you get for restaurant week is unmatched! Between two of us, we took home 4 leftover containers. That is unheard of for the price. Well done Liz!

Andrew M.

Yelp
Food here is awesome, I have tried many different dishes and have never been disappointed. Owner is very nice as well and always willing to accommodate her customers.

Bev T.

Yelp
Excellent food and friendly staff at this family-owned business. Phenomenal dessert. Highly recommend.

Yelp
My extended family and I are visiting the area and decided to walk in here without really looking at anything. We sat down and my dad was trying to remember an Asian dish that he had but couldn't remember the name of it, the female worker (could be owner?) offered to whip something up similar to what he said using ingredients they had on hand. We denied to not cause trouble but she did it anyways and it was PHENOMENAL! Like seriously SO GOOD. As food came out, a few dishes were still getting made and she brought out delicious dumplings for the wait... The service is beyond, food is delicious, potions are humongous and our experience was a 10/10. She even brought out PORK BUNS in the end for us and said "we don't have dessert but this is the next best thing" like what!! Are you kidding? Can't wait to come back! On top of that it was the absolute best pork belly buns I've ever had.

Gabriella W.

Yelp
BEST Asian food I've ever had!! This is my second time here and we have decided this is our new go to spot instead of the big chains. You can tell the food is made with passion and is done so as a beautiful art. I would recommend this to anyone who wants a delicious homey dinner out! Also, the glasses of wine are the kind of glass of wine you really want when you order one - they do not skimp out! 10000/10!!!

Masha P.

Yelp
Accidentally ended up here - the best food we've had in a while paired with incredibly modest pricing and family-style welcoming service. We've been served generous complimentary sample servings on top of already generous servings of dishes that we ordered. We drove all the way from Mesa and sooo worth it! Ordered: Mongolian Beef Chicken fried rice Noodles Potstickers Also tried brisket buns

Nehme A.

Yelp
Great food and incredible service! There was a little bit of a wait so our server offered complimentary appetizers.

Nelson M.

Yelp
My wife and I ate here during our January 2025 visit to Phoenix. This is a very informal, low key restaurant. We started with spring rolls. These were meaty and with a thick crispy shell. We also tried the steam bun Pork belly. This came with some spicy sauce to dip into which was great. My wife hd the Liz Lo Mein with chicken. This was lacking in vegetables. (we asked for more vegetables to be added. There were a lot of noodles. It was bland. I had BBQ asian beef brisket with rice. This was great, with the added spic;y sauce. The service was very attentive.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Ordered Mongolian beef got pot roast. Received my orange chicken sauce in a gas station coffee cup. Tonight Liz was one step slightly better than Panda Express. This will be my first and last time.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this restaurant after reading rave reviews on Yelp. Sadly, that was not the case. We made reservations for a Saturday lunch thinking it be crowded with Christmas shopper on a weekend. On arrival, the sole waiter sat us immediately as there were only 4 tables occupied. He immediately brought us water and menus. We ordered pot stickers and several different bao bun items. After 20 minutes, he brought us 1 bao bun with fried chicken. Then 25 minutes went by and he delivered us an unordered plate of edamame because the kitchen was so slow. Over the next 20 minutes, he pieced together our order and still wasn't sure we received what we ordered. The food was OK, but not worth the disjointed kitchen and delays we experienced. We had hoped to return to try their Peking Duck, but decided against it after our experience. We also overheard other tables complaining and cancelling pending orders.

Jake C.

Yelp
Food is delicious! Plum wine and soda is amazing!!! Owner was very accommodating with out party of 11.

Sandy S.

Yelp
The food is SUPER FRESH!! From the tofu to the fried rice everything was excellent!!! This place is the place to go if you want amazing Asian food!!
google avatar

Tim K.

Yelp
The food was awesome - especially the Asian Brisket on steamed buns! The owner was extremely attentive and wanted to make sure we had a good experience and we did. My wife's spring roll was even made fresh! Then they brought out my pork belly on steamed bun! Wow! Simply amazing! The Mongolian Beef came with a huge portion of the Asian Brisket. Plenty of beef without the onion & scallion filler so many others use. Wife's Chicken LoMein was also phenomenal!
google avatar

Garrett M.

Yelp
I was rather disappointed in this place. First, the service was just...off. We were greeted by a lady who sat us and then walked away on her cell phone, not talking, just seemingly texting or surfing. Another man came to get our drink orders and we found out the artisnal soda machine was dead, so they were serving Coke out of cans. We had a horrible time ordering because nobody seemed to understand that my wife, kids, and elderly parents don't eat much, so ordering a "special dinner combo" for three, plus another plate of food, is plenty for the six of us; please don't tell me that I HAVE to order it for 4 people, that's how food waste happens. The food tasted okay. Nothing at all special, just mediocre. The same lady who seated us was just wandering around, on her phone, for about 90% of the time we were there. In the meantime, our drinks were empty for a huge chunk of the meal, and dishes were very slow to come out.

Jules B.

Yelp
Great discovery. I'm so happy we decided to check this place out!! Food seems to be made with love, fresh ingredients prepared to order. Service was excellent. We'll make this our new spot when craving Asian cuisine. Cute patio when weather permits

Yelp
This is a great restaurant with great people. Family owned. We got to meet the owners and Liz herself is the sweetest. Portion sizes were great and we left stuffed. Korean fried chicken and the lo mein were phenomenal. Spring rolls were fantastic. Everything here is made from scratch. This is a must try.

Garie C.

Yelp
Met Liz during Barrett-Jackson show at Westworld. Being an exhibitor at the show, it's great to know that her food was well received and gave generous portions. She even gave food away for free one night. Super nice.

Dylan A.

Yelp
I just had the slow cooked brisket. It's very delicious and the Service is excellent.

Yelp
While out for a bike ride on Thanksgiving and looking for an open restaurant to grab some lunch, the only place open at the Scottdale Quarter was Liz Modern Asian. We were told that because of the holiday the menu was going to be "Chef's Choice". Boy did we luck out! We sat outside to enjoy the beautiful weather. The food arrived in waves and everything was delicious and the service was great! We will definitely be back.

Lee S.

Yelp
Great food and great service. They treat you like family. Korean fried chicken had a great flavot.

Yelp
Great service & food was amazing!!! Asian Beef Brisket was a good pick & the host is very friendly & helpful w/ recommendations

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Liz is an incredible, kind, generous person. Please go here if you are looking for incredible food with a ma and pop feel. She always goes above and beyond and makes us feel like family. Thanks for providing an inviting space we always look forward to going to! You are amazing!

Yelp
This place is awesome for Asian cuisine. I believe it may be owned and operated by wife and husband. We actually talked to liz herself. She came out of the kitchen numerous times to see to our needs. First, to see if we preferred brisket or steak in our Mongolian beef.... she gave us both. Then, to see if everything was to our liking and offer more rice. We had the pork belly bao.... the liz lo mein.... and the aforementioned Mongolian beef. All were great. I would say the beef was my favorite. The quality is way higher than your usual Chinese restaurant. Great people. Great food. 5 stars.

Sarah F.

Yelp
Food was great, Service was excellent. Highly recommend the spring rolls, wonton soup, and mongolian beef. The cabernet was very good as well.
google avatar

Alexander P.

Yelp
Really good spot in north Scottsdale. Stopped in for lunch on a weekend. Food came out pretty quickly and it was very fresh. Not super oily or heavily coated. Great Asian spot and enjoyed it!
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
Took a long time for me to finally go to Liz Modern Asian. I thought it was just another Chinese food spot but located in a fancy area (ie: Scottsdale Quarter.) I was wrong! This place is the best quality, freshest Chinese Food I've ever had. I greatly appreciated the simple clean flavors and beauty of the food. On top of that, there were some nice touches such as the owner brought out some noodles for my 2-yr old before the meal came (to keep him happy) and she brought out a nice homemade brownie at the end. Great spot. Stop by and try it!

Yelp
This place is a gem in Scottsdale Quarter, I LOVE THIS PLACE. Can't wait to come back. The service is exceptional. must try Asian BBQ Brisket with Bun
