The Essential Guide to Louisiana's Northshore

"A downhome breakfast-and-lunch diner where the proprietor greets regulars personally and turns out classic Creole and Cajun comfort food; signature offerings include buttery biscuits and gravy, grits as a recommended side with breakfast, egg scrambles, po'boys, burgers, and indulgent lunch items like cheese fries. The atmosphere is friendly and homey, with an emphasis on hearty, familiar Southern flavors." - Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle Amanda Ogle is a writer and editor who specializes in travel, food and drink, sustainability, and general lifestyle topics. My wife and I decided to stop here to check out this diner and we definitely were not disappointed! The atmosphere here was totally amazing, the staff were second to none, and Donna and Chanel delivered with absolute perfection. I’ve traveled far and wide and have eaten at many places but this by far is one of the best. Definitely a hidden gem. Food was fresh, tasty and accurately described. 10/10…keep up the great work ladies!

My dad and I stopped in for breakfast and loved this little gem! The place is bright, cheerful, and welcoming with great service. We had the biscuits with white peppered gravy and scrambled eggs—delicious! The gravy was a bit thick for me, but still very tasty, and the Community Coffee was perfect. Can’t wait to come back and try lunch!

I ordered Liz’s Goolosh with cheese grits, eggs over medium, and added the blackened shrimp — absolutely amazing. The eggs were cooked just right, the cheese grits were creamy and full of flavor, and the shrimp brought just the right spice to balance it all out. The roast beef debris and gravy tied everything together into one of the best breakfast plates I’ve had in a long time. If you’re at Liz’s in Mandeville, this is the way to order it.

In town for a wedding and we loved it so much we came back the next day! From the moment you walk in the door to Liz herself coming to check on you this spot was so warm and welcoming, truly amazing service. The food came out fast and amazing. The pancake was the best i have ever had, thick and fluffy with a buttery crunch to the outside absolute perfection. Everything else was great eggs, bacon, biscuits, delicious!!!

1st visit, breakfast on Sat 8/23/25: I want to bring everyone I know here. What a great experience! The Oreo Explosion French Toast was divine - very light and fluffy, not dense at all or sickeningly sweet, as one might expect from the name. As good as the food was, server Lauren is what REALLY knocked this out of the park for us. Attentive and friendly, had great input and comments, and provided absolutely top-notch service.

Google
Our family of four left full & happy! We had the breakfast tacos, oreo explosion french toast, pulled pork Benedict, and mama's grillades & grits. We saw the banana foster pancakes at the table next to us and it was HUGE!

Google
Liz’s Where Y’at Diner is WHERE ITS AT!!! The best brunch spot on the North Shore! Even well worth the drive across the causeway from New Orleans, heck if you’re already that close go enjoy some fantastic food and even better atmosphere.

Google
Great place and atmosphere. Ms. Liz is a sweetheart and introduced herself to us at her resturant. Food was great and I will definitely be comming here again to try more dishes

Yelp
I had probably one of the best breakfasts of my life at Liz's Where Y'at Diner. I got the shrimp and grits with biscuits and sausage gravy, plus a side of link sausage -- everything was incredible. We also shared the berry pancake as a table since it was massive. Best shrimp and grits I've ever had, and that pancake? Only rivaled by my grandma's from when I was a kid. If I could give it 6 stars, I would. If you're in the area, you MUST stop by.

Yelp
The atmosphere is so cute and vibrant. The staff were uber kind as was the owner who was present and helping the staff. The food wasn't what we were expecting. Perhaps we should've dined in instead of ordering to-go because the croissant was chewy and the chicken was really dry. The potatoes we received looked nothing like the potatoes we saw on so many reviews. My crab cake bennie was delicious though, would recommend.

Yelp
My first time at Liz's did not disappoint!! The hospitality is truly unmatched. Liz herself came over to our table to introduce herself, and our waitress was phenomenal. Everyone enjoyed their meals! I got the scrambler, which was cooked to perfection! It was a great portion too. The bananas foster pancakes are huge so most people can only stomach 1 or 2 pancakes (just a warning). The restaurant is very cute with vibrant artwork. I will be back!

Yelp
Had a feeling it would be busy at 11:30am on a Saturday but wanted to try it and stopped by, sure enough the parking lot was packed but we found a spot and went in and to our surprise we were seated right away. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. We ordered Mimosas and looked over the menu and I wanted pancakes and Alé wanted Chicken and Waffles so order up we did. Food came fast and the ambiance was super fun. While waiting Liz came over and introduced herself to us (nice touch) the pancakes are huge, fluffy and so tasty. The chicken and waffles was amazing and the mimosa we awesome. We will be back as we want to try the other offered as well. So glad this place is local to us.

Yelp
Liz's never disappoints. The quality is always amazing and consistent! In fact, I often take visitors from out of town here to get a taste of Louisiana style breakfast. However, it's sometimes a stressful experience when you're there during busy times, it gets SO loud. But that won't keep me away!

Yelp
You know I lived in the Hammond area for most of my life (15-32) and I never once came here as much as I came to Mandeville and Covington. We were back in Louisiana visiting and our friends said let us take you to our favorite breakfast spot. I was like ok. When we pulled up I said I remember passing by this place all the time but I never stopped. It's super funky outside and in, the food was surprisingly very delicious, Liz the owner came to our table, and overall we had a great breakfast. So let's start from the beginning. We pull in, the only complaint I can say is parking, but that has nothing to do with the establishment. We came on a Saturday morning around 9:30/10 ish. Place was packed, we had to wait outside for about 15 min for our table of 7. If you know Louisiana in August, the weather is dreadful, but I must say they were prepared. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side and it's already a tight fit and there's no inside waiting area. So they added misters and fans out front in the most shaded area along with water and coffee. So that was very well thought out. We waited around 10-15 minutes, got sat. Our waitress was overall a good waitress, not super warm in personality, but not a bad waitress. The menu was amazing, lots to choose from and I'm not a normal breakfast lover so I loved the addition of more savory Louisiana dishes. We started with the napoleon fried green tomatoes. It was well cooked and good, but I wish I would've done the traditional . The sauce was very rich. My husband got the grits and grillades and I got the shrimp and grits with crabmeat added. He liked his, I tasted it, and it was good; but mine was amazing. Everything about my shrimp and grits hit the spot. Definitely made a happy plate. Not super traditional in my mind but super tasty. Each of our dishes came with a biscuit and we both saved that for last. You just think it's a biscuit, man we could've ate like twelve of these. They were perfectly fluffy and just delicious. The iced coffee I got was good, however I wish they had an espresso machine; but that's me being picky. The food came out hot and delicious with hearty portions, service was good and Liz coming around to the tables introducing herself and thanking us for coming in really showed how much she cared. Also the interior decor definitely matches her personality. So sad I never frequented this place before.

Yelp
Crabmeat Grilled Cheese. Sounds like a gimmick, right? I mean, you can't have meat on a grilled cheese sammich! Wrong. ;) First off, Liz herself greeted us at the door and helped us get seated. It was packed, as usual, but there were two spots at the bar just waiting for me and Petunia. Handing us to the amazing Fallon, Liz wished us a great meal and a wonderful day - we were happy to oblige! Fallon got us started with some drinks and we decided on the Crabmeat Grilled Cheese with sweet potato fries on the side. I say "we," but that's only because we were sharing the sandwich P brought me here to eat. :D The fries were good, could have been crispier for my taste (I'll remember to ask for it next time), but the sandwich was so super delicious I didn't miss it! The toast is perfectly crisped all around, but once you break through that shell, the creamy, crabby goodness fills your mouth with so much love. Creamy and cheesy, and full of wonderful crab flavor - I wanted to eat the whole thing, but I was really glad Petunia took half...we were so full we didn't even finish the fries. So, crabmeat grilled cheese is a new favorite of mine, thank you, Petunia, for introducing us. But there is soooo much more to this menu, meaning there is something for everyone. Great bennies (egg benedict dishes), breakfast items on demand, sandwiches of many shapes and sizes. The only question left is, Where Y'at, you?

Yelp
This is a lively and quaint little diner. The food is delicious! Busiest on Saturday and Sunday, so expect a little wait with getting seated and for your food to be served. It's worth it though, we ordered the Gleason Scrambler, The Big Easy and Veggie Scrambler. All with cheese grits. I highly recommend having their homemade buttery biscuit too! All so satisfying and yummy.

Yelp
This restaurant definitely lives up to the hype! It got recommended to us by multiple people so we had to try it! The place is super cute in the way they decorate it and it's very spacious inside. We came during lunch on a Friday so we had no trouble getting a seat, but I've heard that the wait can be quite long on the weekends. Our waitress was also amazing! She conversed with us about the menu and we joked around quite a bit. She knew the menu really well and made some great recommendations! I ended up getting the Where Y'At Bennies Mix with the BBQ Shrimp and Big Easy Bennies. They were both different tastes with one being a grit cake and the other being a crab cake. I especially liked the Big Easy Bennie. My friend got the Gleason Scrambler which she enjoyed. The menu is extensive so I would definitely come back to try something else! Service: AA+, the service was excellent! Drinks: Full bar. I got a Bloody Mary and my friend got a Mimosa. Parking: There is a small parking lot. Outside Seating: There didn't appear to be any outdoor seating.

Yelp
This place was so cute. My boyfriend and I went here for breakfast on Sunday morning around 1030am. There was no wait we got seated as soon as we walked in. The ambiance is very fun & welcoming. We loved all the art & fun vibe of the diner & the staff. We both ordered the Deuces breakfast which came with two eggs, grits or spuds, and your choice of toast. We both got coffee (hot & iced available). Our favorite part was when Liz (the owner) came around to every table and introduced herself and asked what brought them to the diner. She was an Angel. Thank you Liz & the sweet staff for excellent service. Love from Texas

Yelp
Very cool little spot. The service was on point and the Napoleon Fried Green tomatoes were divine. Halfway through the dish, I felt the Holy Spirit come over me. I should probably go to church tomorrow....

Yelp
Great early morning breakfast place. I got there about 615am & was greeted at the door by my waitress Chris. I ordered coffee, sausage gravy & biscuit with a side of crispy bacon. The food came out quick & was hot & tasty. Chris checked on me several times & gave me a sweet tea to go in a cool cup for later. I liked it so much that I came back all 4 days that I was staying in Covington. I will be back when I return to the area.

Yelp
Someone recommended that we eat here when visiting Covington. This place has a funky fun atmosphere with loud but enjoyable music. Our server was very friendly and pleasantly greeted us at our table. I ordered the Shrimp Po'boy sandwich - a 12" French loaf with fried green tomatoes, Louisiana style boiled shrimp, spring mix lettuce, drizzled with remoulade sauce and served with potato chips. I thought the bread-to-shrimp ratio was too much, the shrimp were tasteless, and the fried green tomato was not fully cooked. All I could taste was the remoulade sauce, which was good, but otherwise the flavors were disappointing and the sandwich was dry and ordinary! My wife had eggs, with chorizo sausage, and grits that were buttery and delicious! Since we are from MN, we got some good advice about visiting New Orleans during our stay.

Yelp
YUM! Great food, great service, great vibes!! Will definitely be back! Thanks Liz!!!!!!!!!
google avatar

Jamilla F.

Yelp
I've never had anything bad here! The food is exceptional and that's saying something in Louisiana! Always great portions and wonderful flavor. Every waitress is sweeter than the next, but no one sweeter than Mrs. Liz! The vibrant colors of the inside and outside of the restaurant are reflective of Lizs beautiful personality.
google avatar

Peyton K.

Yelp
Best pancakes on the northshore! Service is great. My husband wasn't a fan of his chicken and waffles because the chicken was dry. Otherwise, really good!
google avatar

Spud Z.

Yelp
What an absolute delight! My wife and I decided to take a leisurely drive across the lake and she wanted a waffle - we searched "waffles Mandeville" and this place stood out in the search results. I'm so glad we came. The service here is phenomenal - southshore Brennan's quality without the haughtiness. The food was good and the menu is tantalizing, but to me the kind nurturing neighborhood vibe and level of service really stood out. Come support this woman-owned business right across the lake, y'all. If you're lucky, Liz will greet you at the door. We'll be back.

Hetty D.

Yelp
Great food, great vibe makes for a happy brunch experience. Worth the wait- and the fresh made juices are the freshest around...also nice with a little nip or two. Not sure any diner could grab the 5th star- but this place has heart, soul & taste..all the makings of love in the food.
google avatar

Sabrina S.

Yelp
Location; On my Trip to Louisiana, super cute restaurant, lots of colors and tikiness. Food; Started out with a Mimosa, perfect blend and the Mimosa had a mermaid floating on the rim of my flute. I love to try Eggs Benedict at new places, and I tried the Pull Pork Benedict, which was very good the egg cooked perfectly, and the plenty of pulled pork and the creamcheese and sauce really made the dish. Service; Friendly from all servers.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
I love this little restaurant. Liz is awesome and loves to chat with her customers. And the food was amazing. We ate here on the way to the airport for the first time in July. Why did we wait so long. They are on my go to list from now on for breakfast when in Mandeville.
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
We drove by and noticed this cute little place and then saw three good reviews on Yelp so we turned around. I was so happy just being in here!! The colors are vibrant and the staff is so friendly! Being from California I don't get fried green tomatoes much and this was the perfect dish! The crawfish cream sauce was delicious and the extra crab meat on top was a perfect addition to this dish!! The menu was so diverse and I wish I was going to be here longer to come back! Totally Yummy!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm a big breakfast person and honestly a good good breakfast is really hard to find down in Nola/Mandeville area (imo) my wife told me to try Liz and it was absolutely outstanding!!! Their own coffee blend (big coffee person) and I heavily suggest trying the biscuits no matter what you order. Just get one. You'll thank me. The number one thing about this place is Liz and her staff. They're so incredibly kind!!! It's shocking!! It was my birthday (I chose this place on purpose) and she actually came by and gave me a hug and I don't mean that light shoulder tap hug.... But a hug hug!! I actually teared up Thank you for the great food and kindness. I'm actually heading there tomorrow in fact. It's my favorite
google avatar

Dillon T.

Yelp
Got the crabmeat au gratin. It includes just 2 small slices of garlic bread for $25, so I decided to just pay the extra $6.50 to buy the loaf that they picture in their menu. I was given 2 extra slices of garlic bread and they refused to give me any more
google avatar

Raquel P.

Yelp
Every time I'm in the New Orleans area I have to come here for the Napoleon fried green tomatoes. This is one of my top 10 favorite dishes. It's crispy and creamy. It's a must try. It has a friendly atmosphere where the locals eat. So you know it's good!
google avatar

Dana P.

Yelp
We came here for lunch on Sunday. It's a small place and seating is tight. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table for 2. They get pretty packed. My friend ordered a breakfast plate and I ordered a Roast Beef Poboy. We also got the Napoleon Fried Green Tomatoes. It took awhile for our food to come out, but when it finally did, it was delicious. I would definitely go back if I happened to be on the Northshore. They have a huge menu. Lots of options to choose from. Another plus is that they serve breakfast all day. Note that they charge 3% interest for credit card charges.
google avatar

Gail N Michael C.

Yelp
Cute brunch place (surfer decor vibe) with delicious food and great service. Only 10 mins from I-12

C M.

Yelp
SHU aka Shoemaker aka the general manager here has NO IDEA how to talk to people, he's beyond verbally abusive, callous, screams, makes minor employees cry, and he has seemingly no repercussions for his talking to employees like dogs. It's a complete lack of tact and finesse. I have no clue how he hasn't been recorded yet & sued for the way he berates people in a workplace. As far as the rest of the restaurant, food is mid tier and the place is cramped wish they would just expand instead of stacking people on top of one another but my real issue is Shu. Liz if you care about your legacy you wouldn't leave that piece of work in charge
google avatar

Joan P.

Yelp
As usual, the atmosphere was awesome and I had the pulled pork, which was out of this world! Definitely a 5 star!

Karen B.

Yelp
I can't say enough about this "Gem" of a restaurant!! Happiest place around with the BEST FOOD, SERVICE AND AMBIANCE! The experience will be extra special if the owner, Liz, is in the house!! It's a dining experience you don't want to miss!
google avatar

Janaya M.

Yelp
I would give this place 10 stars if I could. One of the best restaurants we've eaten at. The atmosphere, the service, the friendliness, the food, I have zero complaints. It was very busy on a Friday at 11am and so we had a short wait. The tables are very close together so just get friendly with the folks next to you. :-) I got a waffle and side of bacon, my husband got the shrimp and grits which came with a biscuit. The shrimp and grits were some of the best he's eaten and he orders them often at different places we go. If your in the area I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Carol T.

Yelp
Anytime you're in the area you have to make a stop at Liz's. Their Benedict's are out of this world!! Do not. I repeat do not skip the crabby benny. It's so savory, salty and creamy! It's a 10/10. And I especially loved the accompanying spuds! Most of the time, a side is served with a Benedict as an after thought. Not here, the spuds shined in its own way without outshining the Benedict! It was crispy and delish! We also got the banana foster French toast. What a huge portion! No need to add any more syrup! There is a lot of that banana foster sauce that just soaks into the warm French toast. And the whipped cream was super fluffy which goes so well with the bananas. It wasn't overly sweet which I kinda like! 9/10. Not to mention the service was a 10/10. Liz's gives you all the feels of a small, hometown cafe... everyone was so welcoming and kind! Liz's gets a 5/5 stars!
google avatar

Kitty A.

Yelp
First timer with sone friends and although it was a wait, it was worth the wait. I kept it simple with the Deuces breakfast: grits, eggs, bread and added some bacon fried crispy and it was perfect crispy. My friend had the seafood scramble, it's not an omelet, its scramble eggs with ingredients like an omelet. She was pleased. Her husband is vegan so he created his own meal and he definitely was happy with his concoctions . It looked really delicious. Now the French Toast was our dessert. It was King Cake French Toast and that was amazingly delicious!!! The server, Taylor, was great. Very attentive and friendly. Talked with us, laughed with us and made sure we were well taken care of. The restroom was CLEAN!!! And very colorful with little sayings on the wall. Super cute! The restaurant, as busy as tgey were was clean also. The workers stayed on their game making sure it was tidy. This is definitely a place to visit

Mary C.

Yelp
Food was delicious! Everyone really enjoyed their meal.. the waitress was so friendly and was on top of everything. Great atmosphere and really embraced our kids!

Mandy A.

Yelp
We went back last Friday and I got the banana foster waffle. I have to say, it was the best dang waffle I have ever had in my life. Our server was the sweetest lady also. We have definitely found our new favorite breakfast spot!
google avatar

Pete B.

Yelp
Best shrimp and grits I've ever had! Atmosphere was awesome, service was excellent. Will definitely visit again when in town.
google avatar

Jessica L G.

Yelp
I love this place. Since moving to the area, my friends and I have eaten at Liz's many times. The food is consistently great, the service is friendly, and the prices are very reasonable. (Especially considering the portions you receive.) The ambiance is funky, comfortable, and inclusive. I highly recommend this establishment!
google avatar

Adrienne G.

Yelp
Atmosphere starts the whole experience. Went with a friend when I first moved to the northshore. Then took my elementary age granddaughter who loved it all - the place, the food, and the service. I chose it for her birthday lunch and it was delicious. Her burger and fries were a big hit. I found the roast beef po-boy a bit salty but that's just me.
google avatar

Susan M.

Yelp
The waitstaff were awesome! The place was so happy & vibrant with painting & art! Had the eggs Benedict. Pretty good !
google avatar

JT S.

Yelp
Quaint little breakfast place with a New Orleans style flare to their breakfast. Only advice I would give them is if a Police Officer is eating and gets called out, let them go and have them come back and make them a fresh plate! Don't make them check out and pack up their food. Other than that, must do Breakfast for Mandeville!

Dave S.

Yelp
The food and service is excellent! Go say high to Melissa and the rest of the staff.
google avatar

Ellie M.

Yelp
Fantastic food, amazing service with a comfy southern diner vibe. I love this place. Every time I visit New Orleans (north shore), Liz's Where Y'at is pretty much number one on places I have to go. The staff are so friendly and kind. I've only been there a handful of times and somehow the staff remember me when I go! They're incredible. I love this place so much. Their benedicts are amazing. Normally, when I go my friend and I split two benedicts. We really like the one with the crabcake and the one with lump crab and fried green tomatoes! Mmmm :) I dream about this place.
google avatar

Lesli F.

Yelp
Had a great time with family for a little Saturday brunch. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. Food was as expected - very good!
google avatar

Gary G.

Yelp
Me and my wife went here for the first time for brunch and we're sure glad we did. We received excellent service from all staff members. The menu is full of so many delicious dishes that it was hard to choose. We enjoyed what we got. I got Liz's Goolash and my wife got the breakfast tacos and we shared some grits with bacon, cheddar and chives on the side. All the food was great and we couldn't eat it all so we bought some home with us. The restaurant was very nice with a very nice beach theme. The high ceiling was a plus and gave the diner a more open space. I also think it helped with keeping the noise down. This place was so good that we were planning on returning half way through our meal. We can't wait to go back for more.
google avatar

Pamela F.

Yelp
Amazing food and the staff were so nice and helpful. Quickly became our go to spot while in Mandeville.
google avatar

Melanie B.

Yelp
Service was good kept coffee and drinks refilled. Biscuits are homemade and excellent I had a biscuit with Sausage Gravy it was good. My sister had French Toast ate 1 piece of hers it's the best French Toast I've ever had including mine that I make at home. My other sister had scrambled eggs spinach and onion omelette with grits, biscuit and blood orange juice she said it was good she enjoyed the blood oh, my brother in law had French Toast he enjoyed it very much. My sister who has the omelette and brother in law were supposed to switch after each had eaten half but after they switched he wanted his French Toast back!! It was a a retro hippie style diner and it is excellent!! If you haven't gone should give them a try you won't be sorry!! Excellent wait staff!!

Yelp
In town for business, had to get a bit to eat and found this place on Yelp! and WOW - so glad I did. Loved everything about it. The vibe the service (Tori is AMAZING - I don't know what you're paying her but I'm pretty sure it isn't enough) - the ambience was nice - they know exactly who they are and who they AREN'T. The large fruit bowl with yogurt and granola was PERFECT. The Bloody Mary that accompanied it may or maybe not have affected my judgment. Just kidding. It was fantastic. My friend had a something from the "Deuces" part of the menu - two eggs, hash browns, sausage links and an English Muffin she commented on at least three time - not that I was counting. Seriously - love this place. On my list of "last meals before they drag me before the firing squad". If you don't eat here, please, unfriend me immediately. Large fruit bowl with yogurt and granola - Bloody Mary Deuces - two eggs, hashed browns, sausage links and English Muffin. Tori is

Yelp
Great people. Food was fast. The host Grace deserved a raise for sure told us where to go to are table. Wonderful lady.

Yelp
The best breakfast we have ever had! I had the seafood scrambler with loaded potatoes and a biscuit. My husband had the shrimp and grits. Portions were generous and everything was hot, delicious and clearly made from scratch! The restaurant had such a positive vibe, and really helped start our day on an upbeat note. Last but not least, our server, Rachel, was friendly, efficient, and so nice and helpful. We will definitely be back next time we come to the NOLA area!
