A Guide to the Pop-Ups of Greater Boston | Eater Boston

"A chocolatier-led pop-up project from a Somerville-based founder that appears at breweries, specialty shops, and markets across the city and plans a Bow Market storefront; offerings include handcrafted chocolates sold at events and partner locations, a temporary residency at a Cambridge ice cream shop, and a complementary coffee/tea/snack pop-up concept run by the same operator." - Dana Hatic

Lizzy's Ice Cream

Google
This ice cream shop is a real gem! From the moment you walk in, the aroma of waffle cones and sweet treats fills the air. The selection of flavors is fantastic, with something for everyone . The ice cream itself is incredibly creamy and flavorful. Each scoop is packed with rich taste, and the quality is evident in every bite. The staff is friendly and helpful, always ready with a smile and a recommendation. The shop is clean and well-maintained, creating a pleasant environment to enjoy your treat.

Google
Had a bit of time before dinner and, wait! +Ice Cream+ sign, I was lured in. Who say ya’ can’t have ice cream in January, and before dinner? This was a great surprise and it’s a darn good thing that I don’t live close by. Really, creamy texture and just the right chewiness. Not like bubblegum chewy; am I making sense, here? Generous portions and reasonable prices. Definitely adding Lizzy’s to my must visit list.

Google
What a delicious, refreshing and delightful ice cream. The chocolate orgy flavor, highly recommended. Excellent ice cream shop in Harvard Square

Google
Tried ginger flavoured ice cream on top of Colombian fudge avalanche. Pretty damn good! Ginger ice cream is a nice surprise. Definitely be back for another round.

Google
If you are in the area you HAVE to come here and give it a try, you won’t regret it. The ice cream is so tasty and milky, they have unique flavors which makes it even better. I ordered Colombian fudge Avalanche and Black raspberry, so good. Something to consider will be that the place is quite small for eating inside.

Alan V.

Google
Large selection of options, ice cream with great , nice smooth texture and a wide range of serving sizes to fit your appetite. They also have few vegan sorbets and sell pints. I had the chocolate orgy (brilliant mix of chocolate mix-ins and dark chocolate ice cream) and the black raspberry (good with a subtle flavor). They also do catering.

Google
I came with my friend to accompany her for a quick ice cream run. I was t expecting to eat any but couldn’t help but try the cinnamon flavor and WOW. It was so good and everything I wanted and more. So happy I tried Lizzy’s out— the Cinnamon ice cream tasted like Cinnamon Toast Crunch for sure.

Samantha L.

Google
A Harvard Square staple! I love their “chocolate orgy” flavor. With more and more chains coming into Harvard Square, I always love supporting this locally owned spot with fun flavors and a very photogenic mural.

Yelp
Truly the sweetest two employees ever! They helped us picked a flavor and showcased their new flavors and the tried and true ones. I love that they have little 2oz cups so you're not stuck eating a whole lot of something you don't really like AND it's good if you wanna try a whole bunch of flavors. That being said, they need some WOW flavors like ube or fig. That being said, I liked that they had white pistachio and ginger. We ended up getting strawberry cheesecake. It was yummy and had big chunks of cheesecake so yay! They have one cafe table outside and the shop is crazy tiny but I'm still impressed with the two employees! Give em a raise!

Yelp
I love ice cream, and I would say Lizzy's is easily the best I've tried in the Boston area so far. It has a wide variety flavors, is super colorful inside, and gets to you quick. The consistency was fantastic - super creamy and smooth! I opted for the pumpkin pie while my girlfriend tried black raspberry, and we were both so impressed with both flavors! The pumpkin pie even had pieces of pie crust and pie filling swirled throughout which was a fantastic touch. Super great prices for the area too! While I wish there was a bit more seating around the area, my girlfriend and I enjoyed walking around with our ice cream. You will NOT be disappointed and this is absolutely a must-try!

Meiyi Y.

Yelp
Very standard ice cream store with a variety of flavors. The black raspberry was delicious! There was no wait on a weekday afternoon. The space is pretty tight so plan to grab and go.
google avatar

Yelp
A very tiny ice cream shop located in Harvard Square but packed on the weekends with the line being out the door. They serve ice cream in cup or cone or by pint if you choose to buy it whole. We had the almond praline flavor ice cream and boy do they lacked that flavor with so many almonds, it was amazing!
google avatar

Alexandra A.

Yelp
The ice cream here is great ! The prices are good for the amount and high quality. The service is good . They are friendly and professional. The parking is ok . I will come again whenever in the area it good.
google avatar

Kayla D.

Yelp
Adorable cute hole in the wall ice cream shop straight from a dairy farm. Lots of fun flavors and you can even buy pints to go
google avatar

Kit D.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream in the Cambridge (Harv Sq) area! I believe this a branch of their Waltham location-- amazing flavors to pick from! The only thing I would change is that I wish there was indoor seating, but my gf and I enjoyed our ice creams. My girlfriend went for the seasonal pumpkin pie flavor, and I took my pick of black raspberry-- both were super great!
google avatar

Aprille C.

Yelp
We stopped for ice cream after Harvard museuming. There was a line out the door because inside is super tiny. I felt bad for one guy working. But he was fast. It's just the patrons that were slow! I did not appreciate the flavor menu sign in white letters on pink. So hard to read. We could have been ready sooner if it was easy to read. I got banana and he got black cherry. They were good but not magical.

Yelp
Places ice cream should go: * Mouth * Stomach Places ice cream should NOT go: * Hands * Table * Ground * Clothes While I don't believe ice cream is necessarily suitable for breakfast, there is rarely a time when ice cream isn't a good idea. However, some times are better than others, and a 90° day is one such time. So, I decided to give Lizzy's a go. I ordered a kiddie sized Charles River Crunch. The ice cream itself was perfectly okay, and the service was efficient and polite as well. It's everything else where things start to get messy (pun very much intended). The way the ice cream was served meant that it started melting over the edges right away. Combined with a hot day and flimsy cup, the mess started almost immediately. Compounding this issue was the consistency. While taste wasn't affected, the ice cream felt stringy - I couldn't pick up a spoonful without dragging a whole glob behind it. Certainly didn't help the mess. Where it comes to prices, I think they are reasonable for the area, and seem cheaper than B&J's would be. I would also like to add: their mini size is no larger than the dressing cup you get at the local deli.

Whitney K.

Yelp
The ice cream is fantastic and their sugar-free ice cream is designed to be diabetic friendly and uses a stevia sweetener and is deliscious! We've been coming for years but now that we need to think about the sugar substitutes we love Lizzy's even more! Thank you thank you thank you!
google avatar

Della S.

Yelp
They have super tiny cup sizes so that if you're only craving a spoonful of ice cream, you could actually get just a spoonful of ice cream. If you get the black raspberry flavor you might wish you ordered a larger scoop! I almost walked past this place because the shop itself is so tiny that it's easy to miss. It looks like a lot of their signature/popular flavors are chocolate-based. I was in the mood for something more fruity so I went for the black raspberry, and it did not disappoint at all! I loved how the ice cream captured the tartness of raspberries while still being super creamy. The ice cream had a nice balance between sweet and tart. I did not feel like I was being overwhelmed with sugar. I'd definitely come back to get it again. There are a bunch of flavors to choose from, and they also have a small selection of dairy-free/frozen yogurt/sugar free options. I love that they have packs of disposable wet towelettes next to their napkins and spoons-- we all know that a napkin is sometimes not enough to clean up a sticky melted ice cream mess.
google avatar

Eric N.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream but served with a spoon that couldn't handle it. I had to go in with my teeth really. It would get on the spoon and i was afraid the spoon would break. Get better spoons please!!!! Also get a fan or open the door or do something about the lack of a/c in here. I walked in and immediately had to walk back out because it was stifling in there!
google avatar

Yelp
This location is a satelite of their main location in Waltham MA. This is the BEST ice cream in Massachusetts. They have truly unique flavors and they're ALL EXCELLENT! If you're on death row and you're allowed one last meal, make the dessert from Lizzy's. You'll die with a smile on your face and a happy belly.
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
delicious ice cream from what seems to be a small mom and pop shop! they have plenty of interesting flavors as well as the classic flavors. I ordered their cookies and cream ice cream which was delicious. their scoops are generous and they have plenty of sizes to choose from. they also have a variety in cones which allow for endless combinations. their staff is so sweet and make sure to provide you with the best service. they a small bar where you can eat your ice cream and only two chairs outside. it seems more like a grab and go place with people going to explore the area after ordering.
google avatar

Joyce K.

Yelp
Came here for an after-brunch dessert and loved their ice cream! Got the Charles River Crunch and chocolate cookie dough. It's a small store, with very little (if any) seating, but their ice cream was very yummy. Satisfying to enjoy while walking around Harvard Square on a summer's day.
google avatar

Yelp
Really cute ice cream spot located in Harvard Square! They didn't have too many flavors I was interested in, but I enjoyed their raspberry chocolate chip (frozen yogurt; super tart but really delicious) - I would order it again in a heartbeat! I also tried their chocolate orgy and found that to be overly rich for my taste buds, but I could understand the appeal. The space is super small so there's no space to sit down, but there was a table outside we were lucky enough to snag. The person working was super patient with giving us as many samples as we liked and we were super grateful. Overall, the price was decent and the taste they had in their flavors was pretty delicious - I wouldn't mind coming back in the future if I'm in the area, albeit I do wish they had more seating space.

Yelp
Lizzy's Ice Cream in Boston offers a wide selection of options with great texture, serving sizes, and a few vegan sorbets. Their cookies and cream ice cream was delightful, with creamy base and generous cookie chunks. A must-visit for ice cream lovers. We had the Cookies and creams icecream and it was awesome!

Hard W.

Yelp
Yummy ice cream. So flavorful! Waffle cone tasted fresh. I ate every drop! Cute little shop. Super friendly team! Loved it

Jay L.

Yelp
The Chocolate Orgy flavor is probably the best chocolate ice cream I've ever had. Tastes like they use a really good quality chocolate to make it. The Raspberry Chocolate Chip frozen yogurt wasn't my favorite. It was kind of bitter, like regular yogurt. When I've had frozen yogurt everywhere else I've tried it, it's not bitter, just lighter than the ice cream. I'm sure some people must like the bitter flavor, like how they like IPA beers, but that's just not for me.
google avatar

Jojo B.

Yelp
Ice cream is 10/10.. Pricy but so good Flavors we tried were Adult Armagnac & plum, black cherry and banana
google avatar

Brynn F.

Yelp
You don't go to Lizzy's for anything except ice cream. They know what they do and they do it well. Pretty good, quick service. Deep roster of 20-25 flavors, and a good selection of dairy free sorbets. Less topping options though. We loved the MINI size on the menu. It's tiny, and perfect for if you want a small bite of dessert. Literally one bite.
google avatar

Kaitlin M.

Yelp
Delicious, creamy goodness! I got a sugar cone of the ginger ice cream because what an exciting and uncommon flavor. I loved the taste of the ginger, there were tiny pieces of ginger throughout. Beware: the ice cream is insanely soft, bordering soft serve despite it being scooped from the tub. If you're not prepared to down the entire cone immediately, go for the cup. My brother had the Oreo ice cream and loved it! I have never seen so many Oreos mixed into ice cream. He recommended! Definitely worth popping in for a frozen treat.
google avatar

Yelp
I'm going to be controversial and say that Lizzy's is the best ice cream in Harvard Square. This review is going to focus on the strawberry, my go-to, but I've never been disappointed by Lizzy's. There are real big strawberry chunks, it's not too sweet, and it's super creamy. It makes me a happy man. Strawberry may be one of the most basic flavors in the ice cream world, but Lizzy's does its basics well. Pro-tip: You'll get so much more bang for your buck if you buy a quart. You can effectively have 5 scoops in a quart for the price of 2 scoops. There's also no tax on the quarts, which makes it even more cost effective. I know some people prefer JP Licks, but JP Licks is too vanilla (pardon the pun) for me. I'm taking a star off only because there aren't freshly made waffle cones. There are cones but they seem to be pre-made and from somewhere else.

Chaeli W.

Yelp
Loved it, Great taste, great service, and reasonably priced. We decided to take a walk to Harvard Square and stop for icecream. Lizzy's was the perfect choice.
google avatar

Dennis M.

Yelp
Ate dinner and needed desert and off to Lizzy's we went. We both ordered the peanut butter cup ice cream and it was rich and filled with chunks of peanut butter. Portions were good and the price not that horrid. Only ask would be for more seating though that does not seem possible at a shop this small. Overall -- excellent ice cream.
google avatar

Areeba Z.

Yelp
This is the only small/local ice cream spot in Harvard Square. They carry a lot of flavours and the staff is patient and very nice. I got the Charles River Crunch (classic) ice cream which was a mix of chocolate goodness. I got it on an almond cone. Definitely will be back for the pints!
google avatar

Mo T.

Yelp
Stopped by Lizzy's and ordered a medium size sundae and a single scoop on a cone. Both were hits which were definitely enjoyed. The sundae came with whipped cream and a cherry as standard toppings along with an additional 3 toppings of your choice. Lizzy's is a small shop with no indoor seating but it's a great option for you to order ice cream from and then walk around the shops on a nice summer night. Lizzy's has plenty of ice cream flavors to choose from, is great value, and has great service.

Yelp
One word: DELICIOUS We visited while traveling around Harvard. Stumbled upon while strolling through Harvard square bedazzled by the sheer abundance of restaurants. The location is perfect for proximate after dinner desert. Intimate little spot on a cheerful street. Our first stop at Another place - the Milk Bar - proved unproductive because they only had soft serve ice cream. But Izzy's hit the spot! The ginger flavored ice cream is divine. I ordered a single scoop small cup with sugar cone on the side. Yum! Our second trip in 2 days I also tasted the mint chocolate chip. Superb. Rich, creamy, authentic hand scooped ice cream & sherbet in so many flavors - there's something for everyone! Prices won't break the bank. Recommend as must do for anyone visiting the area.

Yelp
I enjoyed a mini cone of the Charles river crunch and I'm so happy with the portion and the flavor that I would gladly come back again. As a lactose sensitive person, I can't handle a lot of dairy. The mini cone for $2.26 was the perfect amount for me to enjoy without getting that super bloated 'too much' feeling and subsequent gas. I really loved the chocolate flavor with the toffee bits. I feel like a lot of ice cream places have portions that are way too big. The mini was perfect. I'm so delighted they had such a small option
google avatar

Liliana R.

Yelp
Lizzy's is a super small storefront with good ice cream. They're conveniently located next door to Source Restaurant, so it's easy to pop in for dessert after dinner. There are no chairs in the establishment, but they have a counter where you can stand and eat your ice cream. They also have a to-go ice cream case where you can purchase already-packaged pints. While my friend and I were eating our scoops, several customers came in and purchased the pints to-go, so we took that as a good sign. The employee was super friendly, and the ice cream was tasty. It's definitely worth a try.
google avatar

Stacey H.

Yelp
Lizzy's Chocolate Orgy is one of the best, most fudgy, chocolate ice creams I have ever had. It takes a lot for me to say that one to two scoops will leave you full... but this one might be rich enough to take the cake! I only wish there was more seating- because on frigid boston days, I dont want my hands to be as cold as my ice cream. Besides for this, Lizzy's is a great place to stop when in Harvard Square- and while I love the larger Boston chains, its always nice to shop local and handmade.
google avatar

Maria Marija M.

Yelp
Fabulous ice cream from what looks like a mom and pop joint with a cow on its sign! I had white pistachio and Charles river Crunch. Family had chocolate chocolate chip cookie dough and mocha something or other, which were both delectable.
google avatar

Andy D.

Yelp
Classic Harvard Sq spot with good flavor options. They offer a five flavor sampler, so you know I had to order that even though it was way more than one human needs, but who said ice cream should be consumed reasonably! Flavors I got: Grapenut: I love all ice cream flavors that involve cereal, grapenut is such a random cereal but it's one I love and this flavor was lovely, plus love the softened crunchy grapenut bits throughout. Mint Oreo: sharp sugary minty flavor, lots of Oreos, wasn't my fav but the rest of the fan digged it. Peanut Butter Cup: any ice cream with mini peanut butter cups in large quantities will be good, the ice cream itself could have been more peanut buttery, but a good option for PB fans. Charles River Crunch: Dark chocolate ice cream with almond toffee nuggets. Not enough toffee, and the chocolate was good but not great, this flavor was underwhelming. Colombian Fudge Avalanche: Coffee ice cream with fudge and walnuts. Same, coffee flavor was ok, definitely not enough fudge and walnuts. Lauren got white pistachio that was quite good and Em got the seasonal flavor, red velvet cake which had lots of cake bits and was very good also! Overall, decent, creamy ice cream, with interesting flavors, out of five cones. Best paired with more crunchy stuff and Red Hot Chili Peppers - Snow (Hey Oh).

Elena T.

Yelp
Yum! The Charles river crunch is so good. This is my favorite ice cream place in Cambridge.
google avatar

Matthew H.

Yelp
I love Lizzy's so much! They have such a long list of unique ice cream flavours (admittedly not great for my decision paralysis, but very good for my taste buds) - some particular highlights are the black cherry (probably my favourite), the mocha chocolate lace, and the mint chip. They also sell pint (?) sized versions of most of their flavours, which might be a more financially prudent decision to share since Lizzy's isn't exactly inexpensive - but definitely worth the occasional splurge.
google avatar

Bailee P.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream! I couldn't finish the small and I just asked for the littlest size. They need one more that's a step down from that. The employees were friendly and the ice cream was yummy!!

Lance P.

Yelp
The ice cream is always good and the service is quick. Highly recommended. Great place.
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
The fact that this is sooo close to school is dangerous!! Lizzy's is a great place for ice cream on a hot summer day or let's face it, for a pick-me-up no matter what the season! I love how there is a wide variety of flavors here--all home made. The only con is this place is really small. There are only a few seats along the wall so you won't be really sitting down to enjoy your ice cream. But good thing Harvard Square is such an energetic place with lots to see and do, so better take your ice cream with you as you explore the area. Lizzy's the way to go :)
google avatar

Gemma F.

Yelp
Best strawberry ice cream Ive ever had! Lovely place!!! I loved their sugar cones! 10/10!!!
google avatar

Lara W.

Yelp
What does it say about a place when you go two days in a row, blur your eyes at the list of 100 flavors, and get the same raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt in a chocolate dipped waffle cone, both times? Why are you reading this review and trying to figure out if Lizzy's is better than JP Licks? Are you seriously that patient? Do you like missing out on good things and weighing pros and cons until you decide to skip the whole thing and do a juice cleanse instead? Don't hesitate. (Psssst: if you're STILL deliberating, remember that local shops beat chains, even if the chains started as local businesses in the exact same location).
google avatar

Christine F.

Yelp
Ehhhh it's okay. I really like supporting small local businesses, but this place just didn't quite cut it for me. I tried a small Salted Caramel pretzel and peppermint crunch in a sugar cone. The flavor of the ice cream itself wasn't bad (maybe a little sweet?) It was the texture I had a problem with. My scoops had to be put in a cup, because the ice cream was...too soft said the worker?? Aka, not cold enough? The ice cream completely melted in within 5 minutes, and it wasn't a hot day. :// The pretzels in the salted caramel ice cream were also extremely soft/soggy and didn't add anything texture wise. Pass.

Yelp
Food: 4/5 I love Lizzy's Ice Cream. It's by far the best ice cream in the Square. People love JP Lick's, but I always feel their ice cream is sticky and pulls as opposed to being more solid and hard. Everything is store-made and you can really taste the difference. I took one star off because sometimes the flavors are hit-or-miss, but generally they're delightful. My favorite is black raspberry. I worked in an office area close by to Lizzie's while I was at school, and I'd always stock a pint/quart in the freezer for those long days :) Service: 4/5 As with the flavors, the service can be a bit hit or miss, but generally everyone is super pleasant and super wonderful. The shop is small, so I don't like to keep people waiting, but when it's not so busy, everyone is very willing to answer questions and give advice. Also you can sample whatever you want! It may not have the razzle dazzle of a place like Toscanini's, but Lizzie's is like home. :) Atmosphere: 4/5 Like I said, it's small, but one wall is taken up by a huge community board that people can post on, and I think that says a lot about the place! Only very spare seating, but the square is a great place to stroll around anyway.
google avatar

Madeleine J.

Yelp
Stopped by after touring Harvard looking for a yummy treat and my expectations weren't met. Looking at their flavor list, I was excited to try the raspberry chocolate chip frozen yogurt and a coffee avalanche ice cream. But the fro yo's consistency and flavor was inferior to most frozen yogurt I've had and the coffee ice cream was too sweet and lacking unique flavor. Overall, the ice cream and frozen yogurt wasn't bad, but there were other ice cream places in the area that I wish we would've tried instead.

Joanne G.

Yelp
Hot fudge Sunday and the lady that waited on me were fantastic! I really would recommend coming here.
google avatar

Jeanie N.

Yelp
Lizzy's is somewhat of a hidden ice cream gem in Harvard Square. You might run into JP Licks first bc of it's location closer to the T, and although I love JP Licks too, I think Lizzy's is great too! I think I recommend JP Licks if you're getting a small amount of ice cream because they have fun rotating flavors. However, I would strongly recommend Lizzy's as your first choice if you wanted to buy a hand packed pint for a wild weekend or a showstopper at a dinner party. What I love about Lizzy's hand packed pints is that you can get 3 flavors that are packed pretty vertically so all flavors are always accessible! AMAZING!!! I also think you can get 4 flavors if you can convince whoever is working... For chocolate lovers, you must get their dark chocolate with choc chips/other chunky goodies. The dark chocolate flavor of the ice cream will make you H A P P Y

Farzana Q.

Yelp
I was in the Harvard area so decided to try this ice cream shop out. I tried the Colombian fudge avalanche which has chocolate, nuts, and fudge. I chose to have it in a waffle cone and it was delicious! The ice cream did melt pretty fast which I feel is a good thing because it is probably made of the best quality milk. Despite the cold weather there was a line outside the door. It is a small ice cream shop that does not have very much seating at all, so if you're looking for a place to sit down this may not be good for you. I visited on a Saturday afternoon and there was only one employee which I thought was inefficient. She did an exceptional job at getting customers out but I could tell she needed help! I would totally visit again if I am in the area!
google avatar

Goku U.

Yelp
I came here impulsively after going to the Harvard Natural History museum. It was so crowded, I just had to try their ice cream. I tried the black raspberry and the flavor wasn't there. I decided to go with chocolate and birthday cake. While eating my ice cream I realized that the ice cream was a bit too sweet for my taste. Another person in my group got the malt and they enjoyed it. So I think it's more of a ice cream preference.
google avatar

Yelp
Best ice cream in Harvard Square vegan ice cream Best ice cream ever definitely a daily store

Yelp
Went here per the recommendation of a Boston local. Lots of great selections of ice creams and even a few sherbert and sorbet optons !
