Barcelona’s Best Restaurants in the Gothic Quarter, El Born, and El Raval | Eater

"Across from what was formerly Barcelona’s main fruit-and-vegetable market, these digs were once a fruit warehouse. These days, Llamber is a large, comfortable restaurant, with fair prices that allow for plenty of flair: Roasted mushrooms are served on a ceramic log to look like they are growing on it, while a vegetarian dish of black rice studded with tiny vegetables looks like a miniature garden." - Suzy Taher

My wife, son and I first went to Llamber in 2018 and it was somewhere that we just loved… I recommended it to so many people and today I had the chance to go back as my flight home was cancelled! It did not disappoint… everything about it is first rate - the food, the staff and the atmosphere. I had several dishes and they were all outstanding: acorn fed shoulder, aromatic salad, patatas bravas, stuffed date, croquettes, beef sirloin… every one delicious. All fabulously served - friendly but not annoying. Without doubt - one of my favourite ever restaurants… if I’m ever in Barcelona, I’ll be back.

This is a fancy place with higher than average prices. The space is beautifully decorated and has several different rooms. Some of the table are fabulous antique and the decor is definitely stunning. The tapas menu was very limited & at 8:00 pm- they had ran out of a few things on their menu. Beer was cold and the Albariño wine was delicious.

Llamber is one of those places located in a relatively touristy area, but you can be sure the food and service is top notch. Conveniently located just a 2 minute walk from our hotel, we went in on a Saturday around 7pm. On Spanish time, 7pm for dinner is quiet early so we were able to get seats as soon as we walked in. The manager was very accommodating and made sure we felt comfortable. The restaurant’s vibe was also quite pleasant - I’m not a fan of high chairs and high tables, but this is to be one of the most comfortable high chair and high table I’ve ever sat on to. Kudos to the foot rest under the table - small detail but makes all the difference. For the food, we got the following: 1) Patatas Bravas - tasty (personally, could have been crispier) 2) Croquettas - excellent, creamy, tasty 3) Pan con tomate - one of the best I’ve tried so far 4) Shrimp and eggs - delicious 5) Beef steak, chili and fries - very good, beef was tender 6) Coffee crepe with vanilla ice cream - very good Highly recommended! Would love to come back again.

We love Llamber. Every time we visit Barcelona we make a reservation here, we have tried so many of their menus. Service is excellent and their food 😍 This time we tried the Asturian menu and they were able to adjust their plates as I was pregnant. They are the best!

A friend recommended this place to me last year when I wanted fresh seafood. We came there and indeed, it even exceeded my expectations. This year we came back again. Same octopus, same delicious squid. I love stability of the kitchen. The only thing I missed was their lemon pie. It was the best one I ever tried and honestly it was (not the perfectly served seafood) the reason why I dragged my friends there this year. So if the owner considers putting it back on the menu, please, let me know! As you see, I still give them 5/5 stars as I believe in their potential. One more observation is that a cocktail was better shaken by a male bartender (in comparison to a female one) but I guess it’s purely because of the physical strength.

The food was very good. Service excellent. All the plates were hot, not just the food, the plates. Our server spoke Spanish, English, and Italian. If you want a good meal at a non tourist price, I definitely recommend it.

We had an amazing meal, served by Alex. All of the dishes here are amazing, and it has quickly become a must visit for any time I revisit Barcelona. Thank you to all the staff for a wonderful meal and lovely evening

Google
The food is unbelievable good! I decided to celebrate my birthday there and It was the best decision! Jasmin was very kind and made me a surprise with the dessert 🙂 We will definitely go back. The Jamon and Ninyo Yaki is a must try!!!

Yelp
Amazing experience here! Went here as part of a Food and Wine Tour in Barcelona. The staff was very friendly and attentive. The restaurant itself was clean and decorated tastefully. The papas brava were so good. My favorite was a light pastry they had, it was similar to a merengue on almost a cracker cookie. Overall you should absolutely make this a part of your trip if you are in the area.

Yelp
The food, service and ambience was amazing! We had a great recommendation for wine and it was delicious.

Yelp
While passing through Barcelona on our way to the south of Spain, we decided to stay for a night and have ourselves a memorable dinner. We decided to visit Llamber a tapas restaurant on the outskirt of Park de la Ciutadella. The restaurant has a light and airy ambiance, the tables are decently spaced for a more private conversation. We then started with a bottle of Spanish Rosé together with some tapas to share. We had the patitas, black pearl oyster served with rock salt and mignonette and the chef's take on a Spanish bao bun. We found the pork belly flavorful and crispy and blended well with the bun, in hindsight we should have ordered one for each. For our main entree, I ordered paella with seared tuna while my partner chose Entrocôte served with shishito peppers and fries. We found all the dishes simply epicurean and the waiters took time to describe everything on the menu. It was well plated and the dishes came in a timely fashion and everything went well with the wine choice. We felt that we were looked after throughout the stages of the dinner. With great customer service and quality of food, this place is recommended whenever you are visiting the beautiful city of Barcelona.

Yelp
I absolutely LOVED Llamber. We stopped by this restaurant mid-afternoon for a quick bite . . . and a few quick drinks, and were very satisfied with the food, cocktails, and service. Since we had dinner plans for later in the evening, we went with a couple of tapas and gin-based cocktails. Para comer, we had the croquetes, tartar de remolatxa, bunyols de bacallà, and everything was pretty awesome. If I had to order our dishes from the best to good, it would go the bunyols, tartar, and the croquetes. Overall, the service was pretty good. One weird part of our experience: the restaurant had outdoor seating, but we were told that all of the tables were reserved so we had to eat indoors. That was not a problem. My concern was that in the entire time that we were dining (about an hour or so), we did not see a single person use any of the tables.

Yelp
Delicious food and great service! Visited family in Barcelona and they took us to Llamber, wait staff spoke excellent English also.
google avatar

Jessica G.

Yelp
Tourist pricing for sure but solid food options. Inside is classy and dark and there is outdoor street side seating with wonderful large umbrellas. The octopus dish is amazing and so tender. Cheeses were tasty and traditional tomato bread is a must!!

Yelp
If the service doesn't leave a bad taste in your mouth, the food will! We were visiting from NYC and had been delighted our whole week with how wonderful all the restaurant staff were in all neighborhoods of Barcelona. Here, if the hostess deigns to turn her RBF in your direction upon arrival, she will greet you with sharp condescension and abruptly turn up her nose in disgust after seating you. (We suspected she did this then actually laughed when we saw her do it to another party. We had a chuckle imagining who on the SNL docket would play this caricature of bitchiness.) After telling the fresa at the door that we'd just like to sit for a quick meal as we are with tired kids, we waited ten minutes and then got reprimanded by the equally sour faced waiter for fetching our own menus. The pan con tomate was excellent, the cheese plate nice, chorizo stuffed figs good. The cuts of beef were mediocre. Gambas and arroz negro fine. We didn't bother to stay for dessert since the service was aggressively rude and seemed irritated at our presence. We speak Spanish but they acted like they couldn't understand us and only met conversation with angry English. If they are Catalan only, we'd have gladly conceded, but the waiter and hostess were hideous inside and out.

Yelp
Great service but suffered bad food poisoning from the octopus. I went back to the restaurant and they did nothing. I would not go back. Too many other amazing places in Barcelona

Yelp
This is my second time in a few years to come to Llamber and I continue to recommend it. It's higher priced than many options but truly unique chef menu. Surprisingly the things I thought were going to be amazing were ok, but others blew me away. Don't miss the stuffed dates, they were nothing much on the menu but were amazing! Make sure you have a reservations as they seemed off put by anything that isn't planned. We came early and suggested a drink (there is a bar but no one sitting at it and I don't think they wanted anyone to, and then tried to have an after dinner drink at bar and it was super weird.

Yelp
I sit here in my weaved chair, lonely, in a state of contemplation. Why do I do the things I do? Why do I dine the places that I dine? I solemn stand up after indulging in self-proclaimed "pristine" food establishment with a bitter taste in my mouth, but today, I did. The service was reminiscent of Sadam Hussein's advisories, and the ambiance was, simply put, atrocious. Go back to school and learn numbers, suck my balls, mid dessert.

Yelp
Great service. Clean and safe atmosphere. Knowledgeable, friendly staff. Fast service.

Yelp
2nd time to this restaurant it was as great as the 1st. It was even better as I was there with my beautiful daughter. The food is great, the atmosphere is perfect and the service is impeccable. Recommended it to my once boss's boss's boss's boss's boss (yes that many) as he reached out to me seeing I had been in BCN a few times. This is the only place I suggested and he too gave it raving reviews.

Yelp
This is a romantic Austrian restaurant in the Born neighborhood. It offers a nice change of pace from Spanish food. The asparagus and fried prawn Parmesan fondue was excellent. The cheese sauce was rich, foamed and delightful. This was a great way to start our meal. The wild mushroom stew with squid was excellent as well. It was served with a raw egg that really helped enrich the squid ink sauce. This is a very rich dish that was quite filling. They are open for an earlier dinner as well which is a big bonus.

Yelp
Last meal before leaving Barcelona for Valencia, and one of the best ones we had! Llamber is a gastronomic tavern with an eclectic menu. While they're open for breakfast as well, the lunch/dinner menu is the real star of this fine establishment. For lunch, our group of 3 ordered a total of 7 tapas to share - the beetroot carpaccio with king prawns, Black Angus carpaccio, codfish fritters with honey aioli, Maitake mushrooms drenched in an amazing mushroom sauce, potato gnocchi with truffles, the grilled squid on squid pudding, and the pork trotters with shrimp over Spanish rice. Our server actually said we ordered too much, and recommended one less dish for our group. This usually never happens, as most places are happy to take your money! We stuck to our order since this was our first meal of the day and we had been out exploring all morning. So glad we did that, as every dish was better than the last! What truly stood out for me was how well the Black Angus carpaccio went with the grainy mustard ice cream that it was paired with. The potato gnocchi melted in your mouth and the truffle sauce it came in was to die for! The pork trotters with shrimp was also delightful over the Spanish rice and lavender aioli. All truly unique and exquisite combinations! Oh, and the server was right - we rolled out of Llamber with our bellies stuffed. Worth every bite!

Yelp
Best meal had during 5 days in Barcelona! If you come for dinner, make a reservation or sit at the small bar. Group ordered a selection of dishes of share, and everyone was fantastic! Potato gnocchi; sardines with yogurt and figs; croquettes; mushrooms; calamari.... all was so good!

Tim S.

Yelp
My first review Good food poor service We were two and they had big groups to serve They ignored us The chef needs to get better management
google avatar

Yelp
Tapa service, tapa food, tapa interior, tapa wine & tapa prices! (Once you visit Barcelona, you'll understand the TAPA joke!) Walking in, you're greeted with friendly smiles. The whole staff work together to make sure every single customer is satisfied. Ask for Gian Luca!!!! He's AWESOME and very thoughtful. He didn't allow us to over order food and recommend the best they have to offer. He was able to answer all questions accurately and gave us his honest opinion. I do recommend to take some time to review the complete wine list and ask questions about any wine... they'll have the answer.

Yelp
On our first night in Barcelona we wandered over to Llamber on a recommendation of a friend of mine e that used to live in El Born. Wow, was she right and such a fantastic way to start our dining experiences! Llamber is a tapas place so we got 3 shared plates and 2 larger portion plates. They were Maitake mushrooms soared over boletus-edulis emulsion, Parmesan fondue with king prawns and asparagus, Venere rice with mini veggies and emulsion of avacodo and coriander, Codfish with sobrassada, and patinas bravas. All were amazing. Service was spot on and the dining room was nicely set up. Definitely would recommend (we came back for breakfast the next day)!

Yelp
Visited Llamber our first night in Barcelona on a recommendation, and the food was amazing. We talked about it for the rest of our two week trip through Spain and it ended up being our favorite place from our whole trip! The gnocchi with truffles is a must, along with the cod fish fritters with maple aoli. The flavor and texture of each was fantastic. The patatas bravas were the first i had in Spain, and very different than the rest I had, but in a good way! Much more creative preparation and much better flavor. I'll definitely be recommending this place to anyone I know who is visiting Barcelona!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the best grilled octopus in the world! I traveled through different parts of Spain , some praised for their local octopus, but Llamber is so impossible to beat. Also beet carpaccio was original and fantastic. Everything we ate here was memorable. This is one of the few restaurants we had to return during our short visit to Barcelona. Highly recommend it.
google avatar

Nicole F.

Yelp
Llamber clearly noted gluten-free on their menu! Which made it a breeze to order, that and I had asked two of the waiters for recommendations and they both mentioned the same dishes, so we had to! We shared the salmon carpaccio Makati mushrooms The Octopus And... I couldn't help myself... I ordered the gluten-free tomato bread
google avatar

Yelp
Food was hit or miss. Service was average/not great. Croquette was totally cold in the middle, special tuna tataki was basically cooked through and didn't go well at all with its side. Octopus and cod fritters were quite good. Overall not worth it, with so many better restaurants in Barcelona.
google avatar

Pipoca C.

Yelp
A very tasty late dinner. Ordered the parmesan fondue with prawns and asparagus, the pescado frito, and the grilled vegetables in a Romesco sauce. Each dish was flavorful, and the vegetables tasted fresh. With veggies this tasty, I could almost see myself as a vegetarian. Almost.

Yelp
Our hotel recommended Llamber for lunch. It was one of the few places open around 3 p.m. for lunch. Llamber is located near the El Born Culture Center in Barcelona. We had the choice of eating in the bar or in the dining room and opted for the dining room. The restaurant is decorated in a rustic hipster posh decor. We were provided with the English menus and it was recommended that we order the lunch menu for 15.50 euro. They had a great selection of tapas, but we decided to go with the tapas menu because it provided the best deal. For starters, we had a carrot ginger soup. It was served with a branzino toast. The next course was a foie gras with rice. The foie gras was in the sauce. The next course was the fish and chips served in a cone. The final course was a beef ravioli. The pasta in the ravioli was very delicate. For our dessert, we were given the option of a local cottage cheese with honey or pears poached in wine. We opted for the pears poached in wine and it was a great finish to the meal. The lunch special comes with wine, beer, coffee, or water. Since we drank so much the night before, we stuck to wine. Wine on the cocktail menu was reasonably priced and there were a lot of options sold by the glass. Overall, it was a great restaurant and fun for people watching.

Yelp
We saw a line out the door and walked away but when we came back it was gone. So although all the tables were taken inside we sat outside. This is a creative menu kind of place. It is enough to say come by look at the menu and make the decision yourself. I have no regrets and enjoyed everything I ate there. By the time you get there the menu will be different from what I had so what's the point of telling you?

Annie M.

Yelp
Everything about my experience and time here was perfect. I do not have a single critique about their food or service. The waiters know what they're doing and have the answers to everything, especially if you're not sure what to order. The menus is pretty self-explanatory, but it's nice to know there are helpful and attentive servers there for you. They introduce themselves by asking if you have ever been there before, which the way it should be done be. If you're going with one other person, four to six tapas would be enough (3 starters and 2 mains). I ordered five tapas with my partner and there were still leftovers. Highly recommended especially for a date!
google avatar

Yelp
Excellent fresh oysters, good house cava and pretty decent Rioja too! The food is excellent. Prepared fresh and presented elegantly. Highly recommend while in Barcelona. This place was recommended by our hotel concierge and we didn't really have high expectations. But later , we learnt through another hotelier that the concierge at higher end hotels will not recommend a restaurant if it is not superlative in food and service. It's a reputation thing. So we tried all recommendations and all were very good.
google avatar

Ivette S.

Yelp
Service was rude. Food was average at best and overpriced. This place used to be great a few years back but i would never go back.
google avatar

Rebecca J.

Yelp
I was so looking forward to this place but try somewhere else. I had such a disappointing experience. Got there on time. Told my table for one wasn't ready but then one of the managers seated me right away, which was nice. Then got ignored for 20-30 minutes without a menu. When I finally asked for one, they seemed surprised that this solo female traveler was not traveling with a guy. Bit my tongue on that one. Ordered salmon with ginger ice cream and octopus with chimmichurri sauce, hoping it would make up for the service. Both were disappointing and trying too hard. Tomato bread was good though. Then I was ignored again for the rest of the night and had to ask for my check numerous times. Just stopped ordering at that point. I've been told that waiters in Barcelona don't care, but I think they do here, just not to women. I noticed that male patrons were treated quite well while I was there. I was ready to spend money here but left at that point. There are much better and friendlier places here where they appreciate any type of patronage.
google avatar

Binh D.

Yelp
Good enough that if I lived close by it would probably be a regular spot but not great enough that if a friend was visiting Barcelona I would tell them it's a must visit. Food was well prepared and well presented. Portions could probably be a little bigger for the cost especially considering how much great food is in Barcelona. Server was nice and helpful.
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
One of the best meals we had in Barcelona - great food, reasonably priced, and a fun atmosphere. Our first meal in this city, and we were not disappointed. We ended up checking out Llamber at the recommendation of our concierge at Le Meridien, as we were looking for a nearby tapas place away from the swarm of tourists at La Rambla. This was a short 15min walk away from the hotel (near the Parc de la Clutadella and Arc de Triomf). Started with a plate of tomato bread and two glasses of wine, followed by a plate of two croquettes (jamon iberico - delicious!) and an order of codfish fritters that came with this tasty honey aioli. The codfish fritters were perfectly done, and extra points for solid presentation. For our main course, we split an order of costillas pork ribs, which were among the best I've ever had. Llamber also had a wonderful, laid back vibe - service was relatively good and the waiters/bar staff were friendly. If we return to this area, will definitely be back to Llamber.
google avatar

Scott M.

Yelp
Wow what a great Menu!!! They know how to take care of customers. Try the Sea Bass. we also had the octopus.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
Great food. You'll need a reservation at night but during the day it's nice and quiet. Loved everything we had, cheeses, wine, truffle gnocchi.. everything was superb. Hopefully I can stop here again before the end of my visit!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
This place is a winner. Comfortable room, nice bar - but you're here for the great tapas. Get the Patinas Bravas (small potatoes with a spicy sauce). The traditional margarita is great, and the picante one is better. The green salad is more like a blast of spring shoots and herbs - awesome. Mushrooms. Black rice. Lots of clearly indicated gluten free and veggie options. On and on. 4.5 stars and a thumbs up.
google avatar

Ashley T.

Yelp
Came here specifically for the black truffle gnocchi I had heard such great things about. DID NOT DISAPPOINT. One of the best meals of my life. The cod fritters, and croquettes were also AMAZING. Bartender working that night was not great, probably the worst gin and tonic I've ever had at a restaurant, but the food certainly made up for it. The waitstaff is a little pushy on ordering more, but again, that gnocchi. Very upscale atmosphere for dinner, but not stuffy. We enjoyed it!
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
We stopped here with a group of 12 people late on a Wednesday night looking for some good tapas. As our group was large, we decided on having the staff decide which tapas we would get. Everything they brought to us was excellent! The meats to start off with were very good, as were the veggies as well. Special shout out to their truffle gnocchi as it was extremely rich and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Would definitely recommend if you're in Barcelona!
google avatar

Laura K.

Yelp
If the bartender, Sunny is working, then absolutely find a seat at the bar for dinner. No matter where you are from, he will make you feel appreciated and at home. Additionally, his cocktail creations are of the highest quality!! Watching him make them is a show itself, and drinking them will keep you seated at the bar all night.
google avatar

Tomer R.

Yelp
The veil dish is espectacular!! The restaurant is located next to Picasso museum and after we finish our tour in the museum we went to eat lunch at Llamber. I will recommend the veil dish which comes with special sauce and black rice, for dessert we had the red fruits ice cream with a special foam. The dishes were something I have never eat before, the service was great and very attentive.
google avatar

Mari B.

Yelp
We were last minute for lunch and they still took us in. There were four of us and we ordered a LOT. Everything we had was amazing, especially the gnocchi. So soft. We had been on a foodie tour the night before and this place beat that. Gosh this is making me drool. I so need to go back to Barcelona!
google avatar

S R.

Yelp
Our meal was fantastic; one of the best I have ever had. We ordered 3 dishes: That Beef Carpacio with mustard ice cream was amazing!!! We also had a mushroom dish that was delicate ND creamy, then a potato dish that was made even better with the addition of some of the cream from the shrooms. Save room for dessert. Ours was a spectacular mix of sliced berries in a tart sauce with a cream chaser (to be sipped after every bite). Outstanding food at reasonable prices. I am used to being shocked by my check. This time it was a positive surprise.
google avatar

Mark B.

Yelp
Loved this food. Tapas was tasty and had a lot of unique choices. Quality throughout.
google avatar

Giancarlo M.

Yelp
Food and ambiance were both amazing. Service, nothing to brag out. The Gnochis were probably one of the best we've ever had.
google avatar

G S.

Yelp
Skip this place! The service is bad and VERY slow. Came here for breakfast and waited for about 35 min outside before even being noticed. The simple order of a cappuccino and an omelet took another 30 min.
google avatar

Macy W.

Yelp
Pretty bad service. Barely ok drinks. Overpriced. Good food. Server didn't care. Croquettes and tuna worth getting. Overall, a pass. Much better places to try
google avatar

Carina P.

Yelp
Stumbled in to llamber because everything else was closed when we were looking for dinner at midnight on a Monday. Amazing food. Portions slightly bigger than tappas. Two people were super full after four dishes. We ordered the tomato bread (recommended by the waiter), salmon carpaccio with ginger ice cream, the tuna (amazing sauce), the octopus with mushrooms and egg which you mix into the sauce and the beef. All was AMAZING. A MUST in the born neighborhood. Loved the decor. Very inventive and modern and up cycled wood and it felt warm and cozy but still sleek and chic. Friendly staff too, amazing ! Best place we ate in our 3-4 days in Barcelona.

Lyn F.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious!!!! We were disappointed with some of the food so far in Barcelona and felt like we were stuck in a tourist trap. This restaurant was the cure. It was amazing, interesting and woke up my taste buds. We had the cheese plate to start (half size) which was delicious. Two of the six cheeses were strong as someone else mentioned. But they were very interesting and the waiter gave us fair warning. We had the bread with tomato (great), the burger with foie gras (an interesting, unique taste on the American classic). We also had the pork and beans stew (amazing!). The grilled white asparagus (a special of the day) was seasoned perfectly. My desert was the special, a white chocolate foam with berries (blew my mind delicious)! Also, the service is out of this world. The waiters here all helped out, provided a great explanation of the menu, spoke English well, and were extremely attentive. In short: A 20 out of 5.
google avatar

Julie R.

Yelp
The BEST octopus we have had, full stop. Service is impeccable, ambiance is trendy but not too over the top. Every dish is flavourful and balanced. And the drinks are great too!!
google avatar

Stephan A.

Yelp
Food is great: all dishes are orginally presented and tasty. Service is really poor: Not paying attention to us for 20 mins in a 60% empty restaurant, wine glasses with lipstick on it, forgetting orders and cleaning the tables while we are still eating, pooring in two wines while ordering 1 and much more. The cooks are fabulous, the waiters are unacceptably poor. Overall experience: will not come back or advise it to friends.
google avatar

Jen W.

Yelp
Whoa nelly, that was good. From the bubbly enthusiastic server, to each incredible plate that was brought out and the chill but classy vibe... . Stellar experience. Fondue, cod fritters, roasted veggies, tuna tartar and GNOCCHI.... Omg the gnocchi... Steak didn't stand out, although the 'charcoal' yucca was fab. White chocolate cloud dessert yummmmmmm. Rosemary ice cream interesting. But probably wouldn't choose again. Overall. Go. Go now.
