Bariloche Is Patagonia's Most Charming Town

Llao Llao Hotel & Resort

"This Canadian-style resort with Norman roof tiles, green stone, and cypress logs is in "an awesome setting" in Nahuel Huapi National Park—"one of the most beautiful locations in the world." Inside, the decor is inspired by hunting, mountain, and Argentine countryside motifs. Take in "breathtaking views of Moreno Lake and the snowcapped Tronador Volcano" from rooms in the new Moreno Wing, which have Argentine-built wood furniture and stencil- bordered bathrooms. Los Césares, a formal dining room, serves modern French dishes, while Patagonia plates pastas and fondue. "Argentina's most iconic hotel, Llao Llao is a destination in itself, a living glory."

We stayed at Llao Llao for 2 nights on a recent trip to the Bariloche area in January 2025. The hotel is expensive (especially for Argentina), but after researching other hotels in the area, we realised that the location & views appeared to be the best in the region, so decided to splurge for a couple of nights.||We weren't disappointed with our decision & even though it's pricey for the room, the location is amazing & as they say it's location, location, location!||We opted for one of the more recently renovated superior rooms, after seeing travellers photos & reading not so good reviews of the older rooms and were pleased we paid the bit extra for the superior room. It was nicely decorated, fresh & clean and the views of the lake were lovely.||All of the staff were very professional & speak good English and the included breakfast was actually one of the best we had on our trip. There was a fantastic selection of breads, fruits, yoghurts, pastries and eggs to order. The coffee was also pretty decent too!||As mentioned before, the grounds & landscaping of the hotel are what really set it apart, with beautiful views over the surrounding lagos & montanas. There are both indoor & outdoor swimming pools with great views & all activities are included, which we didn't realise until we got there & were pleasantly surprised to find out. This includes, push bikes, archery, kayaks etc.||We borrowed bikes for one day of our stay & used them to cycle around Circuito Chico, which is a beautiful 16 mile (25km) circuit around the lakes. There are some fairly steep hills, but you will be stopping every kilometre to take photos of the surroundings, so it's not as bad as it sounds! We also stopped at the Patagonia brewery halfway around & enjoyed a cold beer & glass of vino overlooking the lakes.||You can also easily walk to the start of the Cerro Llao Llao trail in about 10-15 minutes from the hotel & from there walk for a couple of hours up to the top of the hill & also down to the lakeside and back if you wish. The walk is beautiful through bamboo & fir forests & when you get to the top the views are stunning across the lakes & mountains!||We ate dinner at the hotel both nights; one night in one of the Argentinean restaurant which does steaks & also pasta and the other night we ate in the bar area for a change. The food was pretty good quality but very expensive for what you get. The quite average burger I had in the bar on the second night was GBP25 & a 500ml Quilmes lager £10 a glass! Some of it is the inflation in Argentina at the minute to be fair & the exchange rate, but of course the hotel prices are also inflated, which is to be expected given the location & reputation of the hotel. Anyway nothing to complain about really, just something to bear in mind if you are on a budget.||Overall we had a lovely stay at Llao Llao & were pleased we decided to splurge to stay there, even if sadly it was just for a couple of nights in a beautiful part of the world.

The resort is absolutely GORGEOUS beyond belief and I loved learning about the history of the resort from our bike trip guides. We stayed there one night on our bike trip and most of us agreed that the rooms were shabby and we much preferred Alma Suites where we stayed the night before near downtown Bariloche. I know we were in a lower category room but it had stained carpet and we were on the 5th floor which had low ceilings and slanted ceilings so I kept hitting my head. The breakfast was gorgeous but again it's all show, no substance. If you need to stay here spend the money for a good room OR save your money, stay at Alma Suites (just gorgeous on the lake), nice breakfast and inexpensive and go to the Llao Llao for golf or for a drink (nice lobby bar). Our friends also loved Charming Hotel in Bariloche they said it was luxurious for only $300/night. Sorry Llao Llao but no excuse you need to have clean carpet or you are not a quality operation.

Google
Beautiful venue with amazing sunsets, nice food and many activities available. The room was a bit small, outdated and with ni air conditioning. I had a nice stay going with my partner but I’d rather recommend it for families with kids. Even if you’re not staying there, tea time and sunset are great. However, everything is too expensive for what you get, especially considering the alternatives around. Service could improve (for example, they didn’t let us do a late check out even if the room was free) and it didn’t give the 5* hotel service that we expected.

When someone said “the only place to stay in Bariloche is Llao Llao”, I rolled my eyes. When I booked it and saw the price, I thought “this better be worth it.” But when we pulled into the parking lot, we were amazed. Is it expensive? Yes. Is it a bit tired and worn out in spots? Yes. But where else can you stay surrounded by the history of this place and the beauty of the surroundings? We were certainly glad we stayed here and not one of the hotels in town. When we were given a non-renovated room, we asked for an updated one and were granted our request. Whereas dinner was unremarkable, breakfast made up for it. The staff with whom we interacted were kind and generous in their time and tales of their experiences in this unique property.

My wife and I came down for 4 nights and stayed in a Deluxe Moreno Lake Suite in the Moreno Wing. It was fantastic with beautiful views, sunsets, multiple visits by the housekeeping service throughout the day, helpful service and overall the best part of our trip through Patagonia. We played golf, had spa treatments and breakfast in the main area. All excellent from our perspective. We did not have dinner on site so cannot speak to but the concierge recommended Quiven, which was our favorite spot over the 4 nights. We had a car rental and was easy to get around (although the traffic around Bariloche was horrific!). I stayed at the Llao Llao in 2007 and loved it. Nearly 20 years later, that is still the case.

The views are spectacular. This review is not about that. It is about the service/price ratio. If you would like to pay $60 for a bagel with cheese and salmon that takes 45 to 60 minutes then be my guest. If you would like to wait 40 minutes before someone acknowledges your presence in the lobby bar then go for it. The breakfast Buffet is great because you get it yourself. Solid. The sushi bar has a great view which is great, because we have sat here for 35 minutes to get water and are now on 45 minutes to get our food. Which is sushi and doesn’t need to be cooked, for Pete’s sake !! We could live with this if the prices were not crazy high. Now, we expect high prices in a place like this. But we also expect a level of service that matches the price. This part of the resort was sadly sadly lacking.

Incredible location. Gorgeous views. Unbeatable for activities. However, the food is horrible. It is extremely overpriced and is low quality. I highly recommend booking reservations at other restaurants and avoiding the hotel food if you stay here. Also - the rooms are not what you expect for the price. If you stay in the old building, you can expect not to have air conditioning. There are no blinds so the sun shines in super brightly. The concierges are not to be relied on. I multiple times confirmed with a concierge to have 2 taxis come to bring us to dinner. Then, only one cab came. I spoke to a different concierge and she told me only one cab was requested. We had to wait 25 minutes then for a taxi. Finally, I do not recommend using the travel agency at the hotel. They have no flexibility in terms of cancellation fees and aren’t super reliable to communicate with ahead of time. Beautiful location and views, but do not expect a five star property, food, or concierge services.

Google
The hotel property is beautiful. The staff is slow (wait 20 minutes for a water) and unhelpful. The concierge is a joke we asked them to make us reservation at hotel restaurant said we didn’t need one show up and waited over an hour for a table. The prices are insane!! I expect a lot more at this price point and was disappointed. The grounds are beautiful but we would rather stay at one of the other amazing hotels in the area.

Yelp
The views are just incredible! I was simply amazed by how many great spots to watch the lake, mountains and forest this places has. The service is also excellent, everyone treated us nicely and attentively. The breakfast service, included with the stay cost, was great! Everything on the buffet was delicious and good quality. We had dinner at the Patagonia restaurant. It was good but not amazing, a little overpriced too. The overall atmosphere is cozy and vintage-ish. A few things could be updated (like the chairs' fabric at the restaurants). We stayed in an updated room and we loved it! It was spacious and with an amazing view. I loved the outdoors pool, being in a cold weather snd soaking in the warm water with the splendid view was the cherry of the ice cream for me! There are several activities included with the stay and other ones that you can pay for. Their spa/pool area is great and they also have a super affordable medical service on site in case you need it. Loved my experience and I recommend this resort 100%

Yelp
Only came for the tea, very bad service and not that tasty. If you are staying in Bariloche , do not come to the Llao Llao for tea.

Yelp
Lovely hotel and restaurant. We enjoyed restaurante Argentino, which had traditional lamb grill and deer meats. They were very well made. Also enjoyed the buffet concept for salad and sides. With heavy meat diet it was good to keep a balance with fresh veggies. Also enjoyed the wine list. With blue rate, our entire meal fro two including tip was under $100. Well done USD.

Yelp
Gayle and I didn't stay here. My Lovely Bride loves luxury, but a ground floor corner room with no view for ~$500 (I'm exaggerating) teaches you there are plenty of other "Kick Ass" properties on the Bariloche waterfront. Like Paupers in the Palace, Gayle and I did walk in (tourist parking is not allowed), wander the property, and imagine the possibilities. This place is fabulous, with stunning views, intriguing German-inspired architecture (which may be a reflection of Juan Peron's open arms to refugee Nazis who settled in this area after WWII) and superior interior services (including golf course). Some would say that Llao Llao (which literally means tasty tasty after a tree fungus) is worth the splurge. Life is indeed good here if you consider yourself at the top of the food chain.

Yelp
Our group thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Llao Llao. We had the cabin, which was separated slightly from the resort, which offered nice privacy. I was worried that this might mean the service would be slow, but on the contrary, we had exceptional service throughout. Every time we called with a need, someone arrived within minutes with the request. It was the birthday of one of the girls in our group, and we appreciated their ability to make a special cake for her that was beautiful and personalized and came with everything we needed, including candles. Every staff member we encountered was exceptionally friendly and accommodating, from the housekeepers, to the concierge/bellman, operator, front desk, spa/recreation, restaurant staff and everyone in between. Though some people we may not have directly encountered, it was clear they cared about their work and the guests, as the grounds were kept beautifully and everything was in working order. We took advantage of several services they offer (in parenthesis is what we personally did), including the spa (massage/sauna), recreation (archery, kayaking), pool, concierge (restaurant suggestions and car services), ping pong/billiards, travel agency at the property (boat excursion), and the restaurants, all of which were wonderful additions to our trip. We loved the convenience of having all of these at the resort. The view was breathtaking. Also, I noticed that in this bay the water is calmer than in the city, which allowed us to do things like kayaking. The boat excursion we took was a quick 10 minute ride from the hotel. I also appreciated the evening entertainment. At night there were beautiful singers accompanied by a pianist or guitarist, depending on the day. They played a variety of Spanish and English songs and one singer even played an Italian song we requested. A highlight from my entire Argentina experience was watching Guillermina & Gustavo tango one evening. Their performance was so beautiful and their chemistry so in-line, a few tears came to my eyes. I also was able to take a private lesson with them one day at the hotel, which was the cherry on top. They were so kind, masters of their dance and excellent/patient/supportive teachers. I was so inspired by them, that immediately upon my return to the states, I bought tango shoes and booked a private lesson. I highly recommend inquiring about their performance schedule at the hotel, so you can be sure to see it and if you are looking to get a tango lesson in Bariloche, they are the best. The only small thing that I would say could use improvement is some of the facilities are a bit older, like the bathroom tub. That said, they were very clean, which is what we find more important. The style of the hotel is rustic/cabin-esque, which may not be everyone's preference of style, if you prefer a more modern style. Thank you to everyone for making our trip, and especially the birthday girl's trip, a beautiful and memorable one!

Yelp
Spectacular looking property as the Insight Guides Argentina guide book says: "It is a rare building that could blend into, even enhance, such a magnificent landscape but the Hotel Llao Llao (http://llaollao.com) at the base of the Peninsula Llao Llao, is equal to the challenge." We most highly agree. When you turn the corner on the road and the hotel is suddenly visible it is an impressive site in front of the towering mountains beyond it. Pictures don't do it justice - it looks like it is out of a movie. There is a small church just to the east of the hotel on a hill where they allow pictures of the hotel to be taken. They bring in artisans selling their wares so there are lots of little tchotchkes, jewelry and other local items that could be purchased at tables along the edge of the path leading to the spot where you can take pictures. For those not staying at the hotel there's a small free parking lot just beyond the road where you pull in and talk to the attendant at the entrance to the hotel. The hotel itself seems to have a couple of different dining options - one is the Café Patagonia where we had our lunch and the other is the area where they serve high tea and also a buffet style lunch which is on the patio overlooking the lake to the north. The café was very quaint with broad wood beams and windows looking out over part of the lake as well. It was not at all busy while we were there and the service was excellent as you can imagine, the prices are extremely steep. We enjoyed a chunky lamb and blue cheese empanada with the best salsa criolla we have had to date. We also each had soup - one was a French onion with melted cheese and the other was a pea and spinach purée with mozzarella threads and crispy wild boar pancetta. The pea soup needed salt and pepper but otherwise it was very tasty. Both soups were quite substantial portions at least 10 perhaps 12 ounces each! The best thing we were served however was the bread basket with four different types of offerings. There were breadsticks, onion focaccia, wheat and white rolls and a carrot spread. For dessert we tried a chocolate lava cake which was nice and gooey but a little taller than we are used to seeing it and was served with a small scoop of vanilla ice cream. So one appetizer, two soups and a dessert was just over $60 US! For fine dining and great service with marvelous news we highly recommend the Café Patagonia.

Yelp
The rustic beauty of this hotel is amazing. The beautiful inside and outside are rough hewn wooden logs and reminds me of the grand lodge in the television show, Twin Peaks. Totally cool. The hotel is surrounded by some of the most magnificent scenery I've ever seen, and I've been to every continent and experienced the beauty of places like Lake Como in Italy, Lake Bled in Slovenia, Lugano Switzerland, the Hawaiian Islands, Alaska, Africa, China and on and on. This beats them all, hands down. Mountains, water, the last myrtle forest in the world, fabulous hiking trails, golf, skiing and a spa. I got the very best 90 minute massage I've ever had. The food is good. You have to try the empanadas, a terrific and different take on the ones I'm accustomed to in New Mexico and Texas. The meat ones are delicately spiced and savory. The fish empanadas are a local treat. Yum! Steaks are tender and delicious. The rooms are the reason this review is not a five star. Ours was more of a garret on the fourth floor. The bathroom was out of the fifties and the gorgeous view from our window was basically hidden by a dormer. However, prices are good, the people are nice and the resort has so much to offer that we decided to overlook the room and spend most of the time outdoors in nature. Well worth it. Patagonia is magnificent.

Yelp
Exclusivity and luxury, you feel back to the 19th century . All wood decor this place kept the charm of the past . We went in family to enjoy a hot chocolate . We also took some croissants and Macaron . The quality of the service was perfect . The pastries were exquisite. Must go and at least visit the lobby of the hotel !

Yelp
Most beautiful hotel I have ever been to. The original part of the hotel does not have air conditioning. We were very uninformed by the check in desk. A complete complimentary breakfast is provided In the morning but no one for the hotel ever said anything to us. They don't seem to like Americans. We ordered a cab and and waited for 30 mins and when the cab arrived the bell guys gave our cab away to a Spanish speaking individual. My Spanish speaking sister when inside to see what happened with the cab situation and they laughed in her faceThe views are breathtaking and the pool is great. I just personally feel like the hotel staff suck.

Yelp
I love this place. We came to see the bench dedicated to my grandpa (if you're interested, go down toward the dock at Puerto Lago Moreno. His is the one with the golden plaque.). The staff was so attentive and kind and the grounds were simply breathtaking. After strolling around the garden, we went inside for a hot chocolate. I don't know where they get their chocolate caliente from but it was as --if not more-- delicious than what we were served at Rapanui. Overall a beautiful experience and I'll be anxious to go back

Yelp
We went to Llao Llao hotel for Christmas and it was awesome I wish I lived there they even gave out free chocolate
