I was pretty unfamilar about Lo-fi other than the fact that I've had their lager at a local restaurant and thought it was great. (It's their play on a well made Mexican-style adjunct lager - like Dos Equis, Tecate, etc.)
After driving way up past anything that's familiar on Meeting Street Road, Google Maps tells me the brewery is on the right. Luckily I see a sign telling me to park in a large field. A huge opened garage door welcomes me into the brewery - this oddly beautiful, 1940s barrel vaulted industrial building that seems to be a work in progress for the owners.
Immediately upon walking in to a song by Phoenix blasting heavy through some sort of homemade sound setup, I quickly realized this wasn't your typical local brewery. Their branding consists of a unicorn and disco lettering - all in pink. I saw no beards, and I didn't get that hipster vibe that I typically get when walking into a tasting room.
Their beers are excellent, creative and some of the best in Charleston. The blueberry wheat was my favorite. It was a super light and cloudy that hits your nose with blueberry well before taking a sip. The blueberry wasnt overwhelming or fake. Another beer, the "Glitter Pony," is a incredibly well made Belgian tripel (so much banana and clove).
In a time where Charleston seems to be stamping out breweries using an identical template, Lo-fi is refreshing reminder of everything a great brewery should be.
I'll be back.
