Building Owner Terminates Lease Early on Virginia-Highland Tapas Restaurant Local Luna Following Shooting in Atlanta | Eater Atlanta

"After a January 23 parking-lot shooting that reportedly involved at least a dozen shots and left someone wounded at a nearby gas station, the building owner, Halpern Enterprises, terminated the lease for Loca Luna effective January 24, 2022, citing the safety and well-being of patrons and tenants; representatives for the restaurant had not returned requests for comment. The Virginia-Highland tapas spot — beyond its mojito bar and tapas menu — is known for dancing and hosting live bands playing salsa and Latin music and for shifting to more of a nightclub vibe in the evenings; the eviction follows what reports say is the third shooting outside the restaurant in less than a year, including a customer shot on the patio last March and a fatal parking-lot shooting in October." - Beth McKibben

The food was incredible! The chicken fried steak was crispy, tender, and full of flavor. The service was super friendly, and the drinks were strong and well-made. That cheese dip is seriously top tier. Highly recommend — I’ll definitely be back!

Google
Loca Luna, our absolute favorite go to place to celebrate our anniversary! We sat at the bar and Clint was the bartender and man did he make some great margaritas and other drinks! He took really great care of us and the food was exceptional as always! Thanks to Clint and Loca Luna for making our anniversary wonderful! Can't wait until the next time!

Came with a party of about 17 for a birthday, every single person had a significant complaint about their food. The service aside from that was great, they got refills quick. Took forever to get food. Several folks who ordered different types of steak all got very very rare steak. I myself got the spicy version of their fried chicken sandwich, and earnestly, you could find one with more flavor for a 5th of the price at Chick-fil-A. Everything was significantly expensive and the quality DID NOT match the pricing. Really regret spending money here, will not be back.

Loca Luna is one of our go to spots for brunch on a Saturday or Sunday. The vibe is always cool and there is an air of excitement about the place. The food is great most of the time. I have had a few misses. One visit three of us in a table of eight order the chicken tenders for brunch. They all came out over cooked and hard and chewy. However, we brought this to the attention of the waiter and they cooked us some more with no problem, and no extra charge. They made us feel welcome, and that our business is appreciated. The price is reasonable and affordable. I will continue to go back again and again.

I'm open to giving it a second go and ordering pizza or something else, but the items we ordered this time around were disappointing. About a 5-8min wait for a table Friday night, which is not bad at all. Nice drink list, good service, and a fun atmosphere. The top shelf margarita was average, not sure I'd get it again. We had the chicken fried steak and the stuffed grouper, sides were squash-cheese casserole and the saffron rice (no picture). The gravy for the chicken fried steak tasted like straight flour. The steak itself was ok but small, not reminiscent of the giant plate sized chicken fried steak that is common in the south. The grouper lacked salt and seasoning. The crab stuffing, which was actually a topping, didn't really add much to the dish. The saffron rice tasted like it was a day or two old, and again lacked seasoning. For $20-30 per person, I expected more. Will update review if I try it again.

Google
Most of what we had was good! Party of 12. Service was good as well. Sirloin was fantastic. Everything else was good. All of our appetizers were super good.

Google
Unfortunately, I have to feel that Luna’s has taken a step backwards of recent. Service was slower than the number of seated tables. Some food items were great while others were just fine. For example the bacon green beans were bland and the brownie was dry but the chicken fried steak itself was great. Luna isn’t in the top 10 of my restaurants anymore. Fingers crossed it will be again.

Google
LOVE IT! Amazing service with good wine selection. Our roasted potatoes came out cold and was replaced immediately with no questions asked. The crab cakes were soft and moist and the sauce was excellent. The salmon had a cranberry glaze on top that was delicious, I mean seriously never thought it would pair but it does. Stew potatoes were the amazing. For a date night we spent right about a hundred dollar with tip.

Yelp
Food is incredible. We love the classic lobster bisque and Caesar salad. The bread is delicious too. Super cute aesthetic for a day date! Service was great.

Yelp
Finally! They went back to thin crust pizza!!! The pizza is back and delicious. They toyed with thick crust . They are back to what they do wonderfully thin crust! Service has always been superb!! We love our crust well done and crispy!

Yelp
This place is great. My parents go here any weekend they can and my favorite brunch place to take my girlfriend in Little Rock. Staff is amazing.

Te'Arra S.

Yelp
The food is absolutely AMAZING!!!! The service is decent but a little shaky. I've been twice and had to wait almost 5 to 8 minutes before a server came to the table. It was worth the wait though, and the food is consistently good! Get the Ole south skillet with a croissant instead of a biscuit. Thank me later

Yelp
Pizza night is great, the pie was delicious. Service was pretty good and the place was pretty clean. Good value.

Yelp
Clint, at the bar, was amazing. We'll be back because of him! The fajitas on Monday nights were great.

Yelp
Under new ownership for the past few months. Daily specials are more suited to a bar rather than a restaurant so definitely not as good as before. The new reward systems has a few bugs; it is very difficult to use and even the servers don't seem to know how it works. There is some info about your rewards printed on your bill but even the manager doesn't know what it means and you have to request to redeem any rewards without knowing how much reward cash is available!

Yelp
Came here for brunch. Would def recommend making a reservation. I was disappointed that what I wanted to order was out. I wanted the Louisiana breakfast bowl and they were all sold out of the crawfish étouffée. However I still ordered it without, it still had the potatoes and eggs and crabcake and I got it with the spicy sauce that comes on the crabcakes instead. It was very good. I would like to come back and order it again when all the ingredients are in stock. My date had the chicken and waffles and loved them. The chicken was very juicy on the inside. My one complaint was the drinks. If you order a flavored margarita do not say on the rocks. I ordered a peach margarita on the rocks but the waiter did not inform me that it is a pre-mixed frozen margarita and he brought it to me in a glass with extra liquid poured into it so it separated and was very disgusting. I had to send it back and I never do that with drinks. But he should've informed me it was already frozen. Other than the drinks, the food was very good.

Yelp
we were visiting Little Rock for the first time and our hosts had suggested the place next door, unfortunately it had an hour wait so we walked over to Loca Luna and were seated immediately. The Bloody Marys look great but I have to watch my sodium so I was unable to partake although everyone else enjoyed theirs. Our friends ordered the Breakfast Pizza which I don't even think was on the menu but seems to be a standard option if you know about it. I ordered the Frenchman cast iron bowl which sounded good, buttered sautéed spinach, ham and hollandaise on top of croissant. it was ok but it was lacking seasoning. My Boo got the LA Blowout, which was delicious w/ a crispy lobster crab cake topped with étouffée on top of a biscuit. Service seemed off, it was hard to find our waitress and we had to ask others for napkins, etc. We will return and do recommend this place.

Yelp
Service this morning was not good. Place was packed so three went to the bar and ordered thirty dollars with of drinks while waiting in a table. Two open bar stools and three people, so we stood to drink our Bloody Mary and mimosas (which were very good). Then the bar manager rudely said we need to leave the bar so she can let others sit on the stools. We protested the logic of that, but moved. Once at the table the server did all she could, but she was overwhelmed. The food was very good. If you can't handle a packed house politely, you take reservations.

Yelp
I have been here twice in last 30 days. Chicken fried steak and chicken have been excellent. Service has been amazing. Special shout out to bartender Clint who made delicious cocktails for us and to our waiter Joe for excellent service. If you want a taste of traditional Southern cuisine with a twist-this place is it!

Yelp
I had the pork chop and it was very good. The place was really busy and it took a long time to get the food and even longer to pay the tab. My wife had the roast beef and while it tasted pretty good, it was very cold and soupy. The Mac and cheese was very dry and crunchy. Needs moisture. Very loud tonight.
google avatar

Yelp
Food was ok but we just got kicked out by a guy name Barry. we were a big party. eating and chatting. He came, interrupted with a very loud voice, we were mid sentence and said "well folks, have a good night!" and stood there waiting for us to stand up. We were having a great time, we had consumed big tickets, we were not being loud at all, just three families talking. we had no other choice but to stand up and leave. he left a bad taste in everyone's mouth. I honestly can't say I would be back. I have never been kicked out of a restaurant and this was just not pleasant at all.

Yelp
The food is always great. New ownership soon, and I'm excited to see what's new and what remains the same.

Yelp
I've been coming to this place for nearly 30 years. It has been a staple of good food my whole adult life. My husband and I went in today (Saturday) for brunch. There wasn't a crowd at all. We were very surprised as Loca Luna has been a hot spot for EVER! In my view there were 10 empty tables and 5 tables of 4 or less. The food took longer than we have ever experienced at this restaurant and we ordered very basic menu options. The waitress kept apologizing but we couldn't tell if it was the kitchens fault or the waitress' fault. We ordered Cheese Dip, Biscuits and gravy, and a mahi sandwich. With it being so dead, we thought we'd get our food pretty quick. But no, we waited and waited. We noticed that another couple that sat just before we did got up and left. When our food arrived the normally best cat head biscuits in the world were hard and the magi sandwich was way over cooked. We were so surprised. Then we got the bill and noted that we were charged 17% gratuity for a party of two. Let me say here that I have been a waitress before and I tip very well. Typically 20%. But to be forced to pay 17% gratuity for terrible food and terrible service is not ok. A set gratuity means that the staff aren't being held responsible for their service. After almost 30 years, we are sad to say we won't be back. Very sad. We recommend this place to everyone we know!

Yelp
I've had this spot bookmarked for quite a bit, so the hubs and I found last night to be a perfect opportunity to stop in for post-dinner drinks and a dessert! While I definitely look forward to returning for dinner and brunch, I had a blast cozying up to the bar with Heather (bartender extraordinaire)! She was absolutely great! I ordered the Cherry Limeade for Adults (as the sign reads... lol) and the hubs had somethin'-or-other and ginger ale-- not the name, but I honestly didn't really pay attention as he rarely orders off the drink menu (which is annoying to me)! I digress. As I was saying, the cherry limeade is the bomb! It's sweet and slightly sour, is served in a cute, decorated tin cup, and packs a wallop! -- It's sneaky... You'll never know what hit ya'! (Just the way I like it!) For dessert, he settled on the apple crumble! It's buttery, and served warm with cinnamon ice cream-- DIVINE! Heather brought out the dessert tray, graciously showed and talked us through the offerings, and left us to decide. While making our decision, my neighbor at the bar chimed in and shared her favorites to help us decide claiming that she's "tried them all and she would know!" Cool, worked for me! We settled on the aforementioned dessert, and I took a liking to said neighbor, so we gabbed on a on until she finally asked how I liked the crumble. (It was almost gone at this point) I replied that I loved it and Heather chimed in that it was her (my neighbor, Lynn) recipe. WHAT??!! Hers? The lady at the bar? Imagine my eyes darting back and forth from Heather to Lynn. Lol! My neighbor was the owner, who just happened to be at the bar having dinner with her husband (Mark, the other owner) right next to us. What an organically authentic meeting! Love it when that happens! Anywho, long story longer, Lynn was great and selfies were taken! I failed to mention to her that I am a Yelper and would be Yelping this entire experience, so I guess she wasn't the only one keeping secrets. She'll find out soon enough! :0) Can't wait to go back for more! Great first experience at Loca Luna!

Yelp
Fabulous Sunday brunch. Gigantic pancakes, the best I've had lately; flavorful with a tender crumb. Multiple options. I had caramelized bananas. Waffle equally good. Seated quickly, great service!

Charles D.

Yelp
Haven't been here in many months. Last visit was just so so compared to many other meals. This visit was like old times, great. Place was packed as usual at six on Friday night. Service was excellent and fast, food was the same as in the delicious fare I was used to from past visits. Fun, inviting atmosphere.

Yelp
I had a wonderful brunch experience today. Thank you Bethany for the great service. The food runners were exceptional. We started with the crab cake and biscuits and gravy. The crab cake was really meaty; large lumps of crab and a crisp crust. I was skeptical on the sausage balls as I've had them not cooked evenly, but these were great. The bacon is also high quality. The eggs were great. Lots of cheese, so if you like less cheese, be sure to let them know. I would recommend getting the gravy on the side of the cheese grits, but that is a preference, not a complaint. The lady had the Croissant French Toast. I've had it before and enjoyed it as well. She prefers powdered sugar and whipped cream, so we may ask if that is an option next time. If you get the mimosas, I'd recommend just getting the bottle. Mango and pineapple juice went well with it. All and all a great meal. We will be back again.

Bryan H.

Yelp
We dined here for our anniversary. We ordered the sirloin steak and it was so spicy hot it was inedible. Like ghost pepper, dangerously hot. They did take it off of our bill, but we still had to go to another restaurant to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Great spot for brunch. The staff was friendly and took care of us even though it was busy. We came for brunch and enjoyed the margaritas and mimosas. The champagne that they use for their mimosas is perfect! I'm going to start using that brand for myself. I ordered the crab cakes and they were good. The cheese grits were divine. They use white cheddar and that made it different and more creamy. I'm going to try that at home next time! Check them out.

Yelp

Yelp
Absolutely terrible people there. The host (Barry) was extremely rude, degrading and very disrespectful and dehumanizing of me as a female. I simply asked for a table, he asked for my name. I told him, he wrote it down, I said we would like to wait at the bar (which had open seats) and he said "it's my call and that's a no." He then proceeded to make fun of me. Then went I asked if he could take down my number so we could grab a drink at THEIR SISTER RESTAURANT and he just yelled my name at my face and was dehumanizing. I am so disgusted this is a restaurant in the city I live in. As a local, I recommend you do not go here unless you're ready to be disrespected and dehumanized before even being seated. Unreal.
google avatar

Alexander T.

Yelp
The atmosphere is casual and relaxing. Great place for a group of friends to hang out. The roasted red pepper soup is very good and with split the Loca Luna seafood platter. $4 more if split - which we didn't like.
google avatar

Yelp
Nice neighbourhood Large space Efficient service and unique tastes I tried the chicken calzone and the shrimp pizza The calzone was very buttery but the herbs made it feel light and fresh. The cheese was plenty. The shrimp pizza was a surprisingly good one. Didn't think shrimp would taste that good on a pizza but again they are a bit too generous with the butter and cheese. I'd rather they add flavour by herbs and spices. Will likely come again.

Sarah C.

Yelp
best brunch spot in LR! I live in conway but there aren't very many good brunch spots here so a girlfriend and I decided to drive the extra mile and give this place a shot and we were so glad we did! our server Clint was so amazing and attentive. he made great suggestions like the breakfast pizza and omg it was delicious. it was on the cheaper side too and we still had leftovers after splitting it with my friend. the mimosas however were a little pricey. but Clint was great and even brought us a piece of cake after our meal free of charge! definitely recommend.

Angelina B.

Yelp
Went here for my daughters prom last month, and all I can say is yikes really. For starters parking is a nightmare which is expected because it's Little Rock. When we walked in the surroundings were very nice . We enjoyed how dim a lot of the restaurant was .The bathrooms however were sub par, seemed dated and just a tad dirty. Our waiter was nice but lacked on consistent service. We were often left with no drinks for 10-15 minutes at a time. I can say that they make a mean Shirley temple though! Now the food was the part which gives this review its 2 stars. We were a party of 8 which is a lot so I give grace for some of the time, but there was another party of similar size that ordered after us and got their food before us. And the food was very mediocre for what we paid for it. Some people modified their food to allergies and to preference. The ones who modified to preference got every item wrong. There were around 3-4 of us who modified our food and it was all wrong! I would understand 1 maybe 2 but all of them? My daughters friend also waited and extra 10 minutes after all of our food had arrived waiting on her order. How is that fair? The wait staff seemed annoyed when we brought up all of the inconsistency's with our food. I ordered the penne Alfredo with the veggies in it. Usually Alfredo is a thicker sauce not a liquid. And the veggies inside were odd pairing with the sauce. Not to mention the whole dish lacked any sort of seasoning or flavor that made it stick out. Overall, Loca Luna is not really worth your time unless you go on a mid weekday, or you feel like having sucky overpriced food with mediocre service.

Yelp
First time eating here and it was phenomenal. Great food, drinks and service. We had the cheese dip as an appetizer and the chicken fried chicken and the cheeseburger for dinner! Everything was delicious and our waiter was very nice and took care great care of us!

Christine H.

Yelp
The food was amazing! We happened to be the last customers for the evening and were treated so well! Our server knew the menu and made good recommendations.
google avatar

Amber C.

Yelp
This is a favorite place of mine to meet with friends. The bacon pimento is awesome, but for some reason they give you a smaller amount of jam with the pimento, and I'm always tempted to ask for more because I like it half sweet half salty. Love going here brunch and they have an excellent tempranillo on the menu. Never had bad service either! Definitely recommend.

Yelp
We had my sons wedding rehearsal dinner here and it was fabulous!! Heather and Joe were our servers and they were exceptional-they took care of everything and if I even tried to help, they sent me away to socialize. I really appreciated not having to worry about the same things and could just concentrate on the guests! Heather was extremely helpful in all parts of booking this location--she showed us around, helped decide what we should serve and was super helpful with every (and there were a lot!) question we had. TJ was super helpful and answered my numerous emails professionally and with good humor. We had the fajita bar for dinner and it was really good. They supplied everything from food to drinks and even helped set up for a dessert that we brought. They even packaged up the leftovers for local guests to take home. Overall it was a 5/5!! Thank you so much

Emily W.

Yelp
Our waitress was super rude and was so high she couldn't find the birth date on an ID, take orders correctly, or even make sense when having a conversation. The food was not good enough to be as pricey as it is.

Marjorie H.

Yelp
We came in today and celebrated my brother's birthday. The atmosphere was so awesome. The food was great!! AND to top it off our server Rashod was AMAZING!! he lights up the room for sure. He gave our 8 top superior service. We will definitely be coming back.

Carla P.

Yelp
We have ordered two times now and it was wrong both times. Called to complain and manager hung up on me!!!! Then they would not answer phone.

jessie b.

Yelp
waited an hour for our food. multiple people received their orders before us and they ordered after us. also ordered the margarita pizza, the tomatoes were poorly cut and had hard pieces. also just very bland and lots of burnt bits.

Yelp
Went here about a month ago and told the manager I would give him a great review on Yelp. Wife ordered filet and I ordered the strip. There are several steak places in Little that are as good as you will find anywhere- Does, Riverfront, Sonny Williams, Arthur's. We have eaten at Loca Lunas many times but never ordered steak. Believe me their steaks rival any steakhouse in Little Rock. Oh, and the best Mac n cheese on the planet.

Jessica A.

Yelp
I love Loca Luna, it's one of the best restaurants in town. My singular complaint is that their hollandaise sauce for their eggs Benedict is so overpoweringly lemony it throws the entire flavor palate off. Other than that, the food is amazing. Louisiana Blowout is my favorite brunch item, and the pizza is to die for. Don't get me started on the lemon berry marscapone cake, it could make angels weep in happiness. The service is amazing, I couldn't be happier anytime I'm there, and the low key romance of the place is perfect for a brunch with the girls or a date with your loved one. 4.9/5 stars

Yelp
Came for brunch on Super Bowl Sunday so little to no wait! Sunday brunch hours are from 10 AM- 2 PM! My friend and I were in the mood for Eggs Benedict, but couldn't decide between the Special Crab cake or their Classic Eggs Benny. The great things about friends is we share our meals! Between us two we got one order of the crab cake and one of the classic eggs benedict and got to try the best of both worlds! The Crab Cake was delicious!!! It was a unique twist to the traditional eggs benedict. The poached egg was cooked perfectly. The side potatoes were tastefully seasoned without being too salty, which I have run into more times than I would like. Loca Luna has sold me on the special Crab Cake Eggs Benedict. You can betcha bottom dollar I will be back.

Art G.

Yelp
First time going to eat here but it won't be the last! Staff was friendly and welcoming. I had the pot roast and mashed potatoes with a side salad. Salad was everything a side salad should be. The focus of any meal is the main course which was UH-MAZING! Pot roast was a healthy serving of slowly stewed beef with a great brown gravy and the mashed potatoes were smooth and buttery, all of it seasoned perfectly. Looking forward to eating here every time I have to come to Little Rock.

Yelp
Went to Loca Luna for Sunday brunch because Red Door had long wait and Loca Luna is owned by the same folks. It was a mistake. Service: the waitress was pleasant and attentive, but food was slow coming out and the fellow who delivered it to the table had trouble figuring out what table orders went to. He did not engage at all, just asked who had what, dropped the food and rushed off. Food: the eggs Benedict eggs were poached harder than I prefer. The Hollandaise sauce was not traditional; it was over spiced and medium hot; not bad, but not what the menu stated. The gravy on the cheese grits and the chicken fried steak was overpowering, over salted and over peppered. Even the pineapple in the fruit garnish was unripe. The roasted potatoes, however, were very good. It's an expensive restaurant, but not above expectations for a high end brunch place. One expects high end service and high end food for the price.

Danielle D.

Yelp
Food was sub-par, and our table got a wide variety. Pizza was pretty good but messy, stew was good. Calzone/grouper/chicken fried steak was not good. Service was slow and chaotic- tons of errors on the split bills and we stayed for a while waiting on them to sort all the items out.
google avatar

Teresa D.

Yelp
Came here for brunch, got seated right away but confused on how it took nearly 50 minutes to get our food. Upon arrival the plates were cold and so was our food. The waitress didn't even come check on us, we had to go find her to tell her if the kitchen could reheat because it was obvious the food had been sitting for a while. She told us the food would be remade and it only took them 10 minutes to get that remade. There was no apology or ownership of the mistake that was made. If you're considering this place, be wary that service is extremely lacking. Food is not worth the price either. I got the steak and eggs, steak on both were lacking seasoning. The eggs were not seasoned at all.

Shannon H.

Yelp
Food is excellent. Service was friendly and attentive. The restaurant was quiet and had a feeling of elegance but also rough refinement.

T.L. B.

Yelp
Totally unacceptable. One hour and ten minutes into our wait, the maitre d' announced my daughter's order was "not worth serving" and asked her to order something else. Then, we waited another thirty minutes. Of course, the other two orders had been sitting under a warming lamp the entire time and were practically inedible. My only regret is that I have to select one undeserved star to leave this review.

nada n.

Yelp
We were seated quickly, but that was the only thing that was fast. It took 1+ hour for our food to finally arrive. A friend found a long hair with something else attached to it in her salad, and they didn't even comp the salad on the bill. The food was only so-so, and I did eat it because I was so hungry by the time it arrived and I certainly wasn't going to send it back and wait another hour. It was edible, but bland and arrived to the table warm, and not even hot. The others said their food, other than that disgusting salad, was "OK", but we all agreed we won't be going back.

Yelp
I really like the patio and the food has always been fine, but last night we went and I asked my boyfriend to pay an extra 3.50 to substitute new potatoes for chips. That is A LOT of money for a substitute, but I really was in the mood for them. When his plate came out, there were maybe 10 tiny wedges of potatoes. I only tried one because I didn't want him to go hungry. Most of the plate was empty. I was really embarrassed because I was the one who suggested going there. I mean, are potatoes that expensive now a days? I doubt it. Probably won't be back, which is sad because I did like it the two times I went before.

Yelp
Luna Loca. Living La Vida Loca Oh I am so in love with this place.. every time I go here.. I have a really good time..this is an absolute class act Restaurant who got their shiz together...The servers are super friendly and know the menu back of the hand..since I was traveling, I ended up spending my Valentine s Dinner here.. The food..the drinks..the ambience. Loved it absolutely and I also left with a rose..the only one I got that day ':). I have posted pictures.. their spicy queso is to die for...cheesey dip..and the kick it has.. you have to try it to believe it. I got their special seasoned fries as well and made my self loaded fries.. I was in carb heaven and I loved every minute of it.. the salt was a tad bit too much for me but nothing I could not get past. I had a custom half pizza.. yes can you believe it..they serve half a pizza..that's amazing. I can never finish a whole pizza anyway so this was the perfect portion size..I had a grapefruit cocktail..house special.. I would say if you are ever in Arkansas and about Cantrell road..you gotta go here ....I have never had deserts but locals tell me they have amazing desserts too..I ate too much that I had no space left for any of the sweet goodness they got on the menu.. I am sure to come back for that queso... that queso though...ooooo

Yelp
The pork belly buttermilk biscuit with onion jam kinda thing was unlike anything I've had even though I had the eggs Benedict crab cakes. The entire experience was stellar. Every bite was better than the last. The service was attentive very efficient and our server made the experience even better thank you Emalee! I can't wait to visit for lunch and dinner.. This restaurant is a must visit!
