Houston Restaurateur Benjy Levitt Reopens Lee’s Cocktail Bar and Maximo After Revamp | Eater Houston

"The fast‑casual Texas chain founded by Houston restaurateur Benjy Levit has a cult‑like following and remains a core part of his hospitality group; over the last year the group launched a new market on Rice University’s campus and a location on Post Oak Boulevard. Levit, who has owned restaurants for over 30 years, says the recent flurry of change has been driven by diner feedback and a shifting industry: “When I first started, things needed to change every five years to keep concepts fresh, and I feel like that is no longer in play,” and “2024 was an interesting year for the world, and we were trying to listen and pivot, to try to speak to people are looking for, for sure.” The broader restructuring, he says, aims to balance comfort with challenge and to “push things forward,” showcasing the team’s capabilities across food, cocktails, dessert, and service." - Brittany Britto Garley

Austin Restaurant Dish Recommendations by Eater Austin Editors in 2021 | Eater Austin

"The crunchy chicken sandwich on a pretzel bun is worth checking out: the chicken is coated with a nut/seed crumble and topped with crunchy pickles, romaine, and buttermilk ranch, and each sandwich comes with two sides — I had kale with pine nuts and lemony apples — plus a thick chocolate chip cookie." - Eater Staff

Google
Local foods never fails to impress me. Absolutely love the chicken sandwich, so much of filling and chicken was fresh and juicy. The pumpkin seeds were crunchy and the strawberries were so juicy and sweet. Gulf seafood sandwich was good as well. Will definitely be back.

Great food, service and vibe! Love all the plants and lots of seating inside and outside. Very family friendly and the staff are enjoyable to interact with. Highly recommend dining in or ordering to go.

Google
Freshest food & great service! I have been to this location many times since their opening, and the ambiance has always been great for both studying or grabbing a casual meal. Even during rush hour, the food comes out quickly and it is always great quality! The servers are also so nice! Highly recommend the Crunchy Chicken Sandwich (pictured), Harvest Salad, or Cashew Queso. The coffee here is also so good and the location and parking are also great because there is rarely no parking.

Google
I so enjoy having lunch here! Food is always so fresh and flavorful. Staff is friendly. Atmosphere is chic and inviting. I love the variety of flavors on the salad! People joke that salads are rabbit food but not the ones u get from Local Foods! The seasonal menu ensures you’re getting only the best and freshest ingredients. A top spot for sure!

Google
I had a few meals here while on a business trip to Houston. Interesting hybrid between fine food and an informal eatery, easy place to dine solo if you have to, or with friends. Very impressed with the oriental chicken salad: finely chopped meat, perfectly blanched veggies, lightly tossed with dressing with extra on the side. Very mindful prep and well executed, a sometimes mundane dish really popped here. Also had shrimp tacos, very good and great choices in quality sides. The braised beef was tasty but a tad salty. Excellent selection of wines by glass or bottle, and good craft beer. Service is minimal but friendly. I’ll be back.

Google
I had a wonderful dining experience at Local Foods! The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, creating the perfect backdrop for a delicious meal. The highlight for me was the corn chowder – it was simply divine! The flavors were rich and comforting, and it left me wanting more. I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu. Highly recommended!

Google
The food is good. The burger has a great taste. This is the second time I eat it but it’s been some months since the previous time and this will be the last time because I don’t know who thought it was acceptable to get rid of fries on the menu and have potato chips instead. I’d get it if it was a food truck but it’s a whole restaurant. I don’t want a good burger without fries. Such a disappointment.

Google
Super friendly employees! As usual, I ordered the egg salad sandwich. The sides were coleslaw and red potato salad. The coleslaw is a tad sweet and not my type. I love the potato salad. The serving of egg salad is generous. You almost have to use a fork to eat the sandwich. The coffee they use is Katz and very good quality. They have brunch items on the menu including avocado toast. They were out of lemon slices. And an employee offered to cut some and brought them to the table. The employees seem happy. I saw wine bottles for sale. I love that Local Foods has vegan options, which I will try next time.

Yelp
If you haven't been to local foods, please go and try some of their food id recommend the gulf crab seafood sandwich. Currently they are offering a watermelon lemonade which I've never had before; very delicious! Also, this is their newest location in the city; I encourage you to visit this location specifically it has beautiful interior design and the ambiance encourages genuine converstion amongst people. Next time I order I will sit in the restaurant instead of grabbing it to go, over the food is great the service is great; it's very clean se well! Thank you for the great experience

Yelp
I cannot express how much I absolutely love Local Foods! Their crunchy chicken sandwich is hands down my favorite. That pretzel bun just hits different. I love it so much that I try to stop by every single time I visit family in Houston. Their potato salad and chicken posole soup are also delicious, and everything always tastes so fresh and relatively healthy. Although not on the menu, my dad ordered the chicken caesar salad, which he enjoyed. This was my first time visiting the Post Oak location. There's plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and the environment is very bright and welcoming. When I came on a Friday around 7 PM, it wasn't busy. Service was quick and friendly. I just wish that they stayed open later. All of the Houston locations close at 8 PM, and there have been nights where I'd crave it but couldn't go because of the hours. (Maybe that's just a me problem, though.) There's plenty of lot parking available. Overall, I love coming to Local Foods. This is a spot I always bring out of guests to, and it never disappoints.

Yelp
I found myself back in my old stomping grounds with every intention to go to Nando's. That is until I spotted this Local Foods location. Although I'm a bit salty that this location replaced my former local Panera, when there is quite literally another Local Foods location 10ish minutes down the road (in River Oaks), I felt oddly drawn to the spot. So after a moderate wait, I found myself sitting pretty with a coffee, app and brunch item at Local Foods, not Nandos...for a grand total of $37.87. Mind you, that's before purchasing $65 in wine from their in restaurant wine shop. Yikes! Maybe it's a sunk cost fallacy, but I'd 100% do it again. Who knew shrimp chips paired with summer guac like chocolate and peanut butter? Who knew I'd find myself gobbling it down as quickly as my beloved queso. Who knew a pretzel bun worked on a salmon bagel, or as they call it, a salmon sandwich. Although the oat milk cappuccino was, well, just that, everything else, from the salmon sandwich, to the summer fresh watermelon side, to the check-in from the team was fantastic. I can see why they're busy. I left feeling full without feeling heavy, and nourished without overindulgent. The shrimp chip satisfied my crispy fried craving without all of the grease, and I managed to get all of my greens, protein, fruit, and healthy fats in one balanced meal. The experience is worth the (reasonable) wait and the price if you're okay with spoiling yourself every now and again. Located in the midst of the trifecta of healthy food concepts including True Foods and Chop and Shop, I'll be frequenting Local Foods a lot more.

Yelp
Always love coming to Local Foods. The quality of service and food is outstanding every time. The portions are huge and I typically get two meals out of whatever I order. I usually go for one of the salads or sandwiches but decided to try the shrimp tacos this time and as predicted, they did not disappoint. I enjoy visiting different Local Foods as each location has its own unique vibe, as far as interior design. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Tasty fast casual brunch spot. What you expect, pay and receive is respectable and there is plentiful seating for a good experience. We tried the seared sea bass, steak and eggs, vegan queso, and then agedashi breakfast bowl. The food was well cooked and balanced. Not too salty or greasy. My steak was a lil chewier than I would like but for the spot we were at, my expectations aren't exorbitantly high. Food came out quickly even though it was peak lunch rush. The iced coffee was a good sweetness level and cinnamon-y. Not acidic either. The butterscotch blondie was soft and was a good rec from the worker for a soft moist dessert.

Yelp
I've heard of Local Foods so when I had the opportunity to try it, I jumped at it. Very clean and nice decor. They have a lot of different wines and drinks to choose from. I was kind of sad that I could only order from the brunch menu once I saw that there was a different one for the rest of the week, but my food was really good! I had the Agadashi breakfast bowl. It had egg with spinach, giant asparagus chunks, potatoes, tofu, mushrooms, and a sesame sauce. It's a huge bowl so I couldn't finish it all, but it was really good! A little heavy with the sauce, but I know that that's my personal preference and next time I would probably say less sauce. Overall, really enjoyed the meal and dining experience. Food was really fresh and there's a few other things on the menu that I would like to try.

Yelp
I was there with some friends to have a late lunch. I ordered an avocado toast and a strawberry lemonade. I was the first one to order. So I headed to a corner table but it hadn't been cleaned. We sat somewhere else. The lemonade is good but too sweet. The avocado toast has a great presentation. But I think Local Foods is trying too hard to make it fancy. I had it without the egg which would be an extra $1.50. The toast came with a fruity slightly spicy topping. It wasn't to my liking. The avocado was fresh and beautifully cut though. Though a staff person suggested it as an appetizer, it's quite filling, and I'm glad it's the only food I ordered. I later ordered a cappuccino. The serving is somewhat small. I will try other menu items next time.

Yelp
Ugh! This new location is beautiful -Especially when the sun is out! Seriously! Check out the details! Came in after the lunch rush and was instantly greeted! Ordered a crunchy chicken (not pictured) with their custom aide drink. The new aesthetic is so comforting. The food is always a good too. Great place to stop in, enjoy a good lunch, and take a breather!

Yelp
I was excited to see Local Foods join the Post Oak enclave as I frequented the one on Kirby quite often. I went the first week they opened and they were still going through the motions. The experience was great, nonetheless, and the staff were very welcoming. I went back a week ago and was met with the same warm welcome from the young lady behind the register. Everyone who has ever grabbed a meal with me knows I can never just order off the menu. I always have to modify the meal in some way and that requires patience from whoever is assisting me. Luckily for me, this young lady stayed in it with me as I remixed the bowl that I wanted. I got the salmon poke bowl but with cooked salmon and a host of other things. I waited for about 5 minutes and my order was ready. I didn't dine in but there was plenty of airy space, both inside and outside on the patio. The restaurant was also very clean, including the kitchen, from what I could see. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
Local Foods never disappoints. This location was packed by noon so get here early to beat the lunch crowd. My go-to order is usually the crunchy chicken sandwich, but today I changed it up and went with the egg salad. The combo of creamy egg salad paired with tomatoes and lettuce felt so refreshing. Then adding in the heartiness of a pretzel bun and it was delicious. For my sides, I went with potato salad and the slaw. Typically not a slaw person but it was fine. The potato salad always hits the spot for me. Not too creamy and potatoes are cooked to just the right consistency. Will be back for sure.

Yelp
Local Foods is one of our favorite lunch spots in town. You can't beat the laid back atmosphere and delicious food. This particular location is no different! This location is right by a walking/running trail so it definitely completes the "healthy living" vibe. Our usual favorites, egg salad sandwich and BLT, are available here and just as good as their other locations. The service is super friendly and the food is always fresh. One con could be that they have "paid parking" now. I think it's a "self serve" parking payment option where sometimes there's an attendant that makes sure you either downloaded the app and paid for your parking. When we go, we usually don't pay and we've never seen an attendant. Overall great spot, i will always recommend Local Foods for a laid back lunch spot!

Yelp
They truly care about the quality of what they serve...we picked up an order and when we brought it home, we saw one of our salads was poorly made. We called the store and the manager immediately made it right, and sent a new one to our door within minutes, even added in some cookies. That is great customer service, and much appreciated.

Yelp
I had the summer harvest salad and I cannot think of one bad thing to say about it. The herb vinaigrette was fantastic, so 'herby' and so so fresh!!! I loved the watermelon as a sweet point, every bite no matter what was in it, was purely delightful. If healthy eating was always this delicious, I'd be much healthier :) Thank you so much Local Foods!
google avatar

Yelp
awesome environment! the patio is gorgeous and the food came out really quick. i docked one star because the tacos were good but i feel like they could've been more flavorful. there were also huge chunks of avocado on top which were just hard to eat.
google avatar

Yelp
Beautiful beautiful beautiful!!!! This place looks my dream home with the gorgeous 70s inspired decor. It's truly a clip out of a old home magazine. I decided to stop by here on a random Saturday afternoon and it was not packed and the staff were very friendly. Being a first time guest, I like to ask questions about the menu and my waiter suggested the crusted chicken sandwich. So glad I took his advice because that chicken sandwich was awesome. I loved the crust on it, the flavor was fantastic. This is definitely a place you should stop by for a quick lunch!
google avatar

Yelp
Healthy, fast, and fresh lunch with a killer wine selection. Lots of menu options and a great spot if you are vegetarian or vegan. Worth a visit!
google avatar

Apryl M.

Yelp
Recently tried the new location in the Galleria and stopped in for lunch for takeout. I ordered the freshly made green chicken pozole soup with a baguette. The soup was so delicious and satisfying for a quick meal. The only caveat is that it's so expensive. Paid $9 bucks for bowl of soup & bread but let me tell you the flavors is worth it! Also, I liked the ambience of this place. Clean lines and modern spot for lunch date. I hadn't been here in a while so I was happy to re-introduce myself to their menu as it changed since I've been there. So if you're in the area, give it try folks and I'll be back to try their sandwiches and salads. Good service as well. Sorry forgot to take foodie pic :-(

Yelp
June 28, 2023 Restaurant and grocery. (It's the old bank draft bar) Lee's Den and eau tour connected to it as well. We looked around the grocery store to kill time- cute. We decided to go to Lee's upstairs

Yelp
Fast casual cuisine, fresh salads, pastas, etc. Seemingly healthy meals - a new client bought me lunch there (a first time for everything!). Didn't have a chance to try the coffee or deserts - next time!
google avatar

Klash H.

Yelp
We ordered the seafood sandwich, chicken sandwich, burger, and the daily special benjys chicken. The seafood sandwich is excellent and tastes the same as I remember. I didn't try the chicken sandwich but the burger was standard and the daily special tasted good. It was the crusted chicken with au gratin potatoes. It satisfied my fried chicken craving.
google avatar

Yelp
Lunch crowd but we found a parking spot easily and sat down quickly. It was a good Friday lunch crowd with plenty of seemingly satisfied diners. The inside was full but the staff were very efficient and friendly. The food was really good and the Rose was perfectly chilled.

John B.

Yelp
Any organization starts with great leadership, and Local Foods on Post Oak is the beneficiary of having one of the very BEST restaurant managers in Houston in Andrew C. I have known Andrew for several years. He treats everyone like they are the most important customer of the month. With Gratitude, John B

Yelp
First time at this location, and it had been awhile since I ate at local foods. I was glad to see their menu hasn't changed much. The restaurant is very spacious with lots of seating inside and out. Tables were clean, register was welcoming and answered questions. I ordered their vegan artichoke spinach dip, and a side of red potato salad. Both were of good quality and delicious. That's one thing I do love about this place is the quality of their food matches the price. My son got a kids meal, grilled cheese sandwich and watermelon, and he loved it. Would definitely recommend, especially for anyone looking for vegan options.
google avatar

Alexandra K.

Yelp
I needed a quick takeout healthy-ish options and this was a great choice for me! The Garden Sammie prepared as a salad has lots of guac and dressing on the side to accompany the salad. The hummus on top also tasted so yummy and fresh! It kept really well - I grabbed it to save for lunch for the next day and the lettuce is very crunchy even after sitting in my fridge overnight. I'll probably be ordering this for the next days work lunch again soon!
google avatar

Christone M.

Yelp
The food is tasty . The soup was good and the decor was nice . I would highly recommend if you're looking for something healthy and delicious.
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to get lunch at in the area. Initially I thought it was pricey but the portions are huge and the ingredients are always fresh! It is definitely worth the price. It does get pretty packed but they do a good job of going through the line pretty quickly and getting the food out in a timely manner. My favorite things to get here are the crunchy chicken sandwich and the vegan meatball sub. All of the sides are delicious and so so fresh but the potato salad is unmatched. One of my favorite potato salads of all time. This place is great if you are looking for healthier or "lighter" lunch or dinner options. And the patio is perfect for the amazing fall weather we are having right now.

Yelp
When the locals say this is better than the restaurant next door, they mean it. But both are amazingly good and lucky friend lives so close to both places - I can't really say which is better since they serve different things. Local Foods is more of a sandwich/salad place, and so, I got their signature crunchy chicken sandwich which has a pretzel bun. It comes with 2 sides so I opted for the homemade chips and the Tuscan kale. The sandwich has fresh chicken (not fried chicken, don't be fooled by the name!) with lettuce, pickle, tomato, crunchy chips, to name some of the specific ingredients. It comes with pretzel bun which is nice - it gives a hint of sweetness to it and makes the sandwich a bit more filling. It is mostly healthy food so you won't feel guilty after enjoying a delicious sandwich. The Tuscan kale side was decent - quite refreshing. The chips were also quite flavorful. The only minor issue with the homemade chips is that they had an uneven distribution of old bay seasoning, but the chips themselves are already delicious as is.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
We went to Local Foods looking for something fresh and delicious and that's exactly what we found! I ordered the avocado BLT with kale and quinoa salad it was absolutely delicious and VERY fresh. The ambience and interior design were gorgeous as well. We had the absolute best customer service. All of the staff were very nice. They were packaging up some yummy cookies that had just been baked and they gave me one for free! I will definitely start being a regular customer at this place! 10/10!
google avatar

Crystal W.

Yelp
Loving the new location and food is still amazing! Their level of customer service and welcoming diners is the best. Recommend trying them out if you haven't been. Good food + great service are a Win these days!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Malcolm is a asset actually the whole staff good of-course food soups sides Best in Houston, I can be here every day Never disappoint
google avatar

Dana D.

Yelp
If you're a looking for a great lunch ambiance this is the place! The staff is always so friendly and it always puts me in a great mood after eating here! The crunchy chicken sandwich with the kale and potato salads sides are my go to! The only con I have is that the prices have been steadily increasing so it is disappointing to see that it's almost $20 to get a sandwich.
google avatar

Carlotta F.

Yelp
Delicious food with a good variety. As a vegan I'm always looking for places that can provide options for me. Local did not disappoint. It's also cute inside.

Yelp
first experience at this restaurant and i loved it!!! busy day at work so called in an order to pick up when i could snag a break. ordering over the phone was easy and the person on the phone was patient and nice. walk into the restaurant in awe and amazement like... why have i not been here before!?! there is a lovely outdoor seating area, and the inside is busy with wine and other great decor; feels like a little escape (or maybe my day was just that busy lol). i loved the ambiance and the energy i got from this place. my food was ready and waiting for me when i got there, the waiter was nice and patient. the manager handed me my receipt with a warm and pleasant smile. now let me tell you... the fall harvest salad is IT!!! when i looked at the menu and placed the togo order the crispy brussels, squash, and pomegranate really caught my eye, though i love everything else that was in the salad. i also added salmon as a protein. i'm not usually a fan of all cold components in a salad when there are some things i feel should have been warm like the brussels, cauliflower, squash and salmon; i didn't let that stray me away from tasting and enjoying the salad. all of the flavors came together so well. i am glad the fresh fresh herb vinaigrette came on the side; it's a bit much and heavy. i didn't spread any dressing on my salad just picked some up here and there with the fish or select bites (that's just my personal preference). one advantage of my salad being all cold components is that i got to enjoy the rest of it later when my day calmed down at work. will most definitely be coming back!!

Yelp
GET THE CRISPY CHICKEN SANDWICH! Lots of solid options on the menu and food is great quality! Lots of seating and quick service. A great place to catch up with friends

Yelp
Love it here. Amazing food, amazing beverages. Overall, a great place for a casual lunch or dinner.
google avatar

Melodi D.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the ambiance of this place, and the food was pretty good too! I ordered the Crunchy Chicken sandwich with the broccoli and granola on the side. The sandwich and broccoli were fantastic, but the granola was a little strange--it really was just dry granola, and it was hard to eat. The portions overall are also a bit on the small side, considering the price. Regardless, not a bad place to grab a meal with some friends or coworkers!
google avatar

Yelp
Please fix your video game machine. My boys says it's been broken for too long and it's why they like to come with our family of 5. You have one week.
google avatar

Ashley Y.

Yelp
This is a great lunch spot! My favorite menu item is the crunchy chicken and house chips. I had to send me chips back because of the excessive oil and crumbs that I had. However they brought me a fresh batch. The reason for the four stars is because the staff member I was talking to wasn't willing to get me a new batch until the manager walked up. As a Latina I was nervous to try it but I tried their chicken pozole and was pleasantly surprised because it is delicious! This location can seem a little confusing or tricky to get to because it is part of an apartment building, the nice this is that the whole bottom floor of parking is specifically for retail parking so looking for a parking spot wasn't an issue at all. They have planet of indoor and outdoor seating. I really enjoyed this location.
google avatar

Destiny F.

Yelp
First time trying Local Foods and it wasn't too bad. I tried the Gulf Seafood sandwich which was okay, I do think it may have been a tad too fishy for my usual liking but it's okay. I would love to try something else next time and I do know they do lots of specials which might be fun to try as well. However, it's a great place for a quick lunch and/or lunch break for work. At this location the service was amazing and I truly would love to applaud the whole team and their management! Great job! I look forward to trying another dish here in the future.

Linda P.

Yelp
Food is good. Service is good. I honestly frequent this place...But honestly, why? Why is the music on so bloody loud....always...even during early morning opening hours. I cannot even hear myself think. I even put my AirPods with noise canceling on and can clearly hear the music as if I don't have them on! This is not a place you go to after hours to grab a late night bite. Feedback has been given to manager on multiple occasions. Please turn it down some. I would love nothing more to dine-in.
google avatar

Miriam H.

Yelp
This restaurant gives me Farmer Market vibes with a dash of cafe! Everything is made in house and OH SO FRESH!! My new favorite lunch spot! Here is what you should try; homemade chips, pickles, and the lemonade... I have tasted the quinoa burger, chicken salad sandwich, and Bahn Mi and ALL were so yummy

Lori S.

Yelp
Welcoming staff. Pridefully crafted, health-aware dishes, coffees, wines & cocktails. We're not local, but we will return when visiting Houston.
google avatar

Kacy M.

Yelp
Came here for lunch with my friends on a Saturday afternoon and had a great time. This location is connected to a apartment building but there's plenty of retail spots available in the connected garage. This location has indoor and outdoor seating. The only problem with outdoor seating is that no one comes to check up on you once you get your food. I got the salmon & eggs off the brunch menu (grilled salmon chunks, soft scrambled eggs, potatoes). It was visually appealing and a huge portion. I think the salmon portion was not generous, the egg was perfect, and the potatoes were a tad dry (nothing hot sauce/ketchup wouldn't fix) but overall I liked it. For $17 it should have more of the salmon.

Yelp
I went to Local foods today and the service was excellent . I talked with e Manager of local foods on Bering Drive and his service was excellent. Good we simpya ss Kj jnv. I will be back. The services was excellent. I had the pleasure to meet the Chefs , I was totally satisfied. Mrs. Tate and guest. I give them 5 stars.
google avatar

Jaide A.

Yelp
I went to have brunch with family and the food and service was lovely. My sister loved her Taco Salad and my brother loved his Steak & Egg sandwich that was on special. I had the Crunchy Chicken sandwich and the flavor was great . My only complaint is that the chicken is served cold which I was NOT expecting after reading it was "oven roasted" . If the flavor wasn't so good, I would've sent it back. The Vegan Gumbo was okay. I wouldn't call it a gumbo at all. Any who looking for that gumbo taste, this is not it. Lol Maybe they should rename it a vegan chili because of the kidney beans. We also got a carafe of mimosa and it was a bit bitter. I would give this place a 8/10 . I would come back to try a few salads and the vegan queso.
google avatar

Barret L.

Yelp
My favorite thing to get here is the egg salad sandwich! I never used to think I liked egg salad, but then I had theirs and I was hooked! Only thing I get when I come here. It is loaded with parmesan and comes on a pretzel bun. Yum. You also get your choice or either two sides or a soup. Be sure to try the seasoned pumpkin seeds! Very unique and fun flavor. Great people working there and doing a good job with social distancing and mask wearing.

Yelp
We live closest to the Rice Village location, but was in the area and stopped by for lunch. The creamy club chicken is divine! The turkey was very not dry, loaded up with bacon, avocado, and egg. Very sad that this sandwich is exclusive to the Tanglewood location- wish I lived closer.

Yelp
Super delish but a few things could be improved. When I received my food I told the guy that served me that I had ordered a side of their sweet potatoes which he didn't bring. Unfortunately he didn't speak a word of English and could only look at me confused. Look, their food is amazing so they get five all the way.
