"Houston brewery Local Group Brewing will operate under a new name starting this fall. Originally launched in early 2020 at 1504 Chapman Street, the 7,500-square-foot brewery has now rebranded as Gristworkz. Distincture Hospitality group co-owners Dave Sorrell, Jorge Benitez, and Morgan Green purchased the original brewery in May 2022, rebranding it under its new name, which is derived from the brewing process of grinding malt and cereal into milled grist and extracting the malt from the grains. The hospitality group is promising “to build something for Houstonians that they’ve never seen before,” according to a written statement by Sorrell, however, the brewery will remain open as it undergoes renovations, according to a release. Chef Daniel Leal, former chef at the now-closed cocktail bar Night Shift, will lead the charge on new beers, wine, and cocktails, and will incorporate Local Group’s tradition of a weekly rotating menu, including Korean BBQ Steak Night, plus specials on burgers and pizza. Other menu items coming from the brewery's full kitchen include smoked pork belly gorditas, freshly made churros, and jalapeno and cheese kolaches. The brewery has also partnered with coffee company Blue Tile Coffee to host pop-ups on-site at 9 a.m. Wednesday through Sunday. The restaurant also plans to serve canned cocktails as a to-go option and will feature weekly events for the neighborhood, including gatherings for cyclists and runners, trivia nights, and silent disco parties." - Brittany Britto Garley

This is a great small brewery, the food is outstanding. I highly recommend the veggie pizza, also try the patty melt. The place was wide open and clean a great atmosphere, my only gripe was that they don’t have a bigger variety of brews on tap. Still highly recommended, if you’re in the area or looking to try a new spot, this is the spot. The people there are very nice and helpful.

This is a weighed review. My first time was absolutely disastrous. Slowest service imaginable. I ordered two beers but only got one (it was amazing, however). I paid for both because it might have taken the waitstaff until Monday morning to figure it out. Then I decided to go again. Fortunately we dodged the slow waiter and then we got what we wanted. The beer was absolutely amazing. The food was absolutely amazing. Parking is easy. Grab a pack to go while you’re there.

Glad we stumbled upon this spot after trying to get into St. Arnold’s. They have a neatly curated beer selection (mostly leaning towards the hops, but with a stout thrown in for good measure!) The food was excellent, maybe better than the beer. We picked up the Texas steak melt and the wild mushroom poutine and decided to sub the fries on the steak melt with their roasted veggies which were unexpectedly tasty. Of course the poutine was super good too with hand cut fries and an egg on top. Pretty decent Covid set up too- tents outside to provide a little shade and fans scattered about to keep the air moving. Looking forward to going back for more poutine!

Great beers, the Double Vertigo was too good! The food was awesome, the crispy chicken sandwich was perfect! Looking forward to heading back. Staff was great as well.

Bold and exciting beer and food selection. The Lil star, hera's nectar and ale of sky stood out. The duck confit poutine is the best your can get without having to take a flight to Montreal. The overall theme of the brewery is a bit confusing, is the logo a hurricane? a galaxy? a beer spiraling out of control? the beer names also evoke astronomical themes splashed with pop culture references

Went here on opening day. Was in a rush so I only tried the flight with their first 4 beers. I’m I fan of IPAs and Hefeweizens, so I really like their NEIIPA and Hefe (reminds me of Live Oak’s, but a little more acidic). Now they have a NEIPA that’s my favorite. Finally tried their burger and it was great; solid and filling

Happy to have found another brewery with a kitchen so I can get my brewery fix with some delicious bites. It's well set up for social distancing, the beer menu has familiar favorites and the couple of times I've visited included new rotational beers so there's been something new, and the food I've had was delicious (I'm a fan of the traditional-style wings on the menu).

Great place to have a beer and a meal. They have vegetarian options and a great selection of beer. I had the grilled cheese and it was really good.

Yelp
I love that more craft breweries have a full bar! My friend and I recently had dinner and drinks at Gristworkz. We came on a Thursday which meant all day HH specials! We enjoyed our visit so much that we went back later that same evening for late night bites and drinks. Parking: They have a parking lot behind the building with a moderate number of spaces. You can also park on the street. Parking wasn't an issue on a Thursday evening. Space: The indoor area is pretty spacious. They have quite a few large benches throughout which is perfect for groups. There are a couple of high top tables and a few seats at the bar. There's also a large patio out front. I liked the murals and I noticed they have board games too. The vibe was chill and very laid back. Drinks: I enjoy craft beer, but I was in the mood for a cocktail. All menu cocktails were 50% off. I had a lemon drop martini and it was so good! When we returned, I ordered a tall Hendrix G+T. It was only $9 and it wasn't even one of the HH specials! What a steal! Food: I ordered the Korean Chicken Sando. I honestly wasn't expecting much because it's bar food, but I was shocked at how beautiful the presentation of this sandwich was on the plate. The portion of the sandwich is very filling! The chicken was very crispy and I enjoyed the tanginess of the BBQ sauce. The garnish on the plate was a nice touch! When we returned, I ordered French Fries ($5 HH price). They could have been a little crispier, but I enjoyed them. The kitchen was open until 11 pm which was a bonus. Staff: Emily was so nice and helpful. All of the staff we interacted with were really nice. I'm looking forward to going back so I can try one of their beers lol.

Yelp
My friends and I were hanging out nearby and wanted something casual and new to us to grab a bite and a drink. Gristworkz popped up on Yelp so we headed on over. There's not much about them on their website and not too many reviews but it looked promising. It's listed as a brewery but it's so much more. There's plenty of parking in the back. Walking up, there's a nice outdoor patio. Inside is spacious with lots of long tables. There's a bar to the right, what looks like where they brew off in the corner and a large open concept kitchen. There wasn't many people there but the bartenders at the bar seemed preoccupied with their friends sitting at the bar. I ordered my items and about 10 people that ordered after me got their food before me. I noticed everyone had a buzzer except me. I brought this to the young lady's attention and pretty much got dismissed and said my food will be out. Only after talking to the kitchen staff did I finally get my order that they claimed they never saw. Customer service definitely needs help here. Again, it's labeled as a brewery here, but they also have cocktails and wine offerings. I was curious about their brews and went with the Hot Boi which is a pineapple and tangerine blonde ale. It was pretty tasty and refreshing. It seemed liked everyone in my large group liked their drinks as well. I was in the midd for a burger and saw they have an everyday deal. 15 bucks for any burger, fries and beer. Considering you pay almost that much at a fast food restaurant without the beer nowadays, it seemed like a no brainer. I got the Hardy Burger because the ingredients called out to me. It had American cheese, poblano peppers, jalapeño peppers and caramelized onions. The burger was pretty good and came with delicious fries. I like that they have different options as far as food goes too. I heard the pizza was delicious but I didn't have room to try it. I did have room for one solo Brussels sprouts and they were done really nice here. Overall, the customer service left a bad taste in my mouth considering it's where I wanted to have my birthday lunch. Luckily none of my friends got the same rudeness, but it left a bad impression on them too the amount of time I had to wait even after bringing it up. Not sure I'll be back.

Yelp
Came here for the first time for a little Sunday Funday action with a big group to celebrate a birthday. There is some street parking out front, and a designated lot out back. Inside the place has some cool street art for decor. I noted a patio out back for sunny days. The place was mostly empty except for our big party, and few people. Drinks - I saw the brewery to the side of the bar/ordering counter where you ordered. I was torn between 2 brew options Hot Boi and Side Gig (I think those are correct). So I asked the server and he let me sample both. I went with the sour, Side Gig. It's not too sour actually, very lemony, bright, easy. Food- I ordered the daily special. Any kind of menu burger, fries/tots, and beer for $15, which seemed like a fair deal. There is a large open glass kitchen near the door. Which seemed a bit empty. I only saw 1 guy in there, maybe 2? Food for our group came out in waves, which is fine, understandable. Burger- I got the Thick and Hardy- I dig the name. It's got a kick with that jalapeño action. I appreciate the carmalized onions. Fries tasted like Checkers or Popeys, so at least they were seasoned, win. Service - was ok. Bartender forgot to my pour my beer. I had to go back up to the bar, and wait for a different bartender to get my drink. I wouldn't say we were checked on or even greeted. Who knows, you may have a fantastic experience here, so try it out. Wishing this business well.

Yelp
I've been here during the day and night time. Both times are a great vibe. During the day I came here for a book club meeting, they served great food and drinks...pricey ngl. At night, a friend and I met up here for some drinks. The pizza was just calling my name and it was flavorful. The service is impeccable and you get your items in a timely manner.

Yelp
Ambiance: Fun brewery/bar with a patio area and inside dining space. The patio is dog friendly and looked like a great spot for large groups to sit & enjoy food/drinks together. We sat inside and found the vibes to be super fun - not too loud or crowded on a Saturday afternoon which was nice. Loved the hamburger and tater tots! Delicious drinks as well - my husband enjoyed their beer options. Clean bathrooms, decent pricing. Quick service and friendly. I would definitely go back with friends as a fun weekend lunch or day drinking spot!

Christian P.

Yelp
Went with a few friends + coworkers for some drinks! The burger was pretty good I don't remember exactly which one I got but I just remember being relieved it was good lol. Service was ok it was pretty busy so it took a bit to get our food. Ambiance was also ok pretty loud but we were also in there with a bike club so I really can't complain. We loved the outside seating as well we eventually moved out there once we realized we might be interrupting the club's meeting. Overall a pretty decent place for a drink! I didn't see any parking but there's street parking so not too shabby!

Josh P.

Yelp
My good friend lives right up the street and we were looking for a good spot close by to get a quick bite and some drinks. I guess this was previously a different brewery we didn't get to go to but now its more so of a bar with both beer and cocktails and an in-house kitchen that was pretty good. My fiance and I shared an order of tacos which were great and also an elote which was solid. We had a few cocktails and I had a neat bourbon and everything was priced very fair and tasted good. I'd like to visit again and check out their beers. Friendly neighborhood bar that I recommend for small or large groups.

Ryan M.

Yelp
Stop what you are doing and go check out this micro-brewery! With a comfortable indoor area and large front patio, this place will pass your vibe check regardless of your current mood. Many diverse and quality beer options alongside some classic bar food specials, I highly recommend this spot! Great for groups of any size! Cheers!

Yelp
Great beer selection and good food! Gristworkz is a fun place to hang out with your current group of friends or meet new ones! They play good music, offer board/card games and also have TVs to scratch the sports itch. Gristworkz also features espresso martinis on tap, along with guest beers from other breweries and even root beer for folks that would rather avoid alcohol. A brunch menu has just been added from 11am-3pm on weekends too, there really is a little something for everyone!

Nancy T.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I love to play this game called, "overrated or underrated", and Girstworkz falls on the underrated category. This place needs more presence in the social media scene cause so many people are missing out on this awesome bar. But then again, I'd rather keep this place a secret. We have a long list of places we like to go to for bar steak nights and we came across Gristworkz. And let me tell you, ITS WORTH IT! Look, most places you get just the steak and ONE side, whether that's a baked potato or side salad. But here, you get way more than that. I hate that I'm sharing this but its too good to not share how good this place is. For $25, you get a steak, side salad, roasted corn, baked potato, and buttered sourdough toast. WORTH. IT. PLUS you get half off wine. 5 buckaroos My only gripe is that the steak isn't consistent. Every time I've asked for medium rare, I've gotten well done every single time. The other sides make up for the overcooked steak. I hope they fix the temp if I say blue... But wait, there's more. On top of Wednesday steak nights, there's ALSO so many other deals EVERY SINGLE DAY. Seriously. There's corn star combo on Mondays, pizza Tuesdays, steak nigh Wednesdays, burger Fridays. WHAT'S NOT TO LIKE?! The area is so close to the heights bike trail and its just in a great area overall. The area is quite developed and just up and coming. These social media influencers are slacking on the social media presence, cause Gristworkz the new hangout spot! But don't you worry, I gotchu.

Yelp
Great ambiance and impeccable customer service. We come here for the F1 races and the energy is amazing! Good and cheap drinks and full service kitchen!!

Tiffany S.

Yelp
Great find! This is the new concept that used to be LCL GRP. Dave and Jorge are two of the owners and they were working behind the bar. Great service. I tried a few of the beers and settled on the Kolsch. Don't be scared of the Peach. It adds more depth than flavor to the beer. The Hardy Hop is a good Pale Ale but nothing here will satisfy a hophead. The Turnstile is a great session though. In addition to their own beer, they have a few guest taps as well and a full bar. Brewers hail from St Arnold, Southern Star, and Holler. They run a weekend special of barbacoa or carnitas tacos that was delicious and they do burrito, beer, and a bourbon for $15 every day. The chef, Marisol, came from Monkey's Tail. Patio is dog friendly with a walk-up window and they have a plan to sell to-go cocktails with food later this year. Location is close to a train stop with easy access to downtown. Will definitely be back.

Courtney K.

Yelp
Still our favorite neighborhood bar. There are specials everyday and the food is just so damn good.

David G.

Yelp
Back again and came back for the barbacoa on the weekends! And too good and you get 1/2 Lb , ample amount of tortillas, limes, onions, etc! Will def come back again!!! Nephews had a plain cheeseburger and fries which was very good as well per their review lol

Irene H.

Yelp
Wednesday steak night $25 - brussels sprouts + cornbread + potatoes. couldn't finish the steak so I had leftovers. it was delicious - recommend!

Krystelle P.

Yelp
When in doubt, Gristworkz. Their hot boi is delicious so are the fries!! Don't forget the nachos either, soooooo good! The staff were nice and had smiles on their faces so this place is definitely a vibe! It's cute and hip.

Mitchell H.

Yelp
This was my second visit, and first for pizza! The staff is always friendly and attentive. I'm not a big beer drinker so, their patience and knowledge definitely makes it easier to make a selection. As for the pizza... it's huge! Tuesday night is $20 for pizza + 2 beers. Great bargain!! The pizza dough is a sourdough and I guess it's the sauce was a bit sweet. I suggest the pepperoni as my buddy snagged that one and it looked amazing! It's covered in pepperoni and it made me wish I got it instead. Y'all already know this spot looks like a German Beir Garden inside and it gives!

Robert L.

Yelp
Feeling kinda bad that I have never gotten around to writing a review since I have been coming here regularly for a couple of years. Gristworkz is a terrific neighborhood brew-pub with a relaxed atmosphere and an eclectic crowd. I visit midweek so I cannot speak to the weekend vibe, but during the week it is a great place to sit with friends and have a beer and a meal. The food is interesting and always very good (shoutout to chef Bobby). The beer is, IMO, the star of the show. Brewmaster Dave does a nice job of keeping the favorites in stock and offering a good variety of seasonal variations. The wait staff is generally pleasant and attentive. If you are looking for a local place with a genuine neighborhood feel, this is a great choice.

Charlene P.

Yelp
Doing a pub crawl today and discovered this gem near downtown. Nice beers, plus a full bar. Food menu is creative. Not overtly crowded, friendly server, and a wonderful atmosphere. I will definitely return!

Cecelia O.

Yelp
Easy bike from the Heights, incredible vibe, and the food is far better than it has to! We're basking in the sunlight after wiping out the Sunday $12 special of a half-pound of carnitas w handmade tortillas and salsa, fresh onions, cilantro and lime. (We felt virtuous after biking a couple hours -- indulged in the veggie empanadas OMG!) Yeah, ditch the huge crowd down the street and cool your heels here. Totally worth it!

Amber M.

Yelp
Stopped by for drinks since we live near by. Old fashioned was great. Didn't get a chance to order food. Came in right before closing.

Brandon D.

Yelp
The food was quick and unique. Service was outstanding, with great knowledge of the menu and the area. Awesome experience with the brewery in the seating area and community seating. I am glad we stumbled upon this place!

Tamica D.

Yelp
A cute neighborhood bar that has daily specials! I came here on a Monday with the intention of indulging in one beer for happy hour. To my surprise they have a $10 special on Mondays that includes a beer, a shot, corn dog and elote! Who could resist that deal lol...not me! Actually I had two orders lol...please don't judge me. I will definitely be back here especially since it's right in my neighborhood! They service is also great! The bartender was so sweet, I didn't get her name or I would give her a shout out here. If ever in the area definitely give this place a try!

Coby V.

Yelp
Stopped by for a Texans game. The atmosphere is okay... food is overpriced. The beer is great! Beer is decently priced. IMO everything else is overpriced.‍

JCruz T.

Yelp
Everyone in our party ended up sick from their stomach. Place sucks. Everyone ordered different items from menu so we could not pin point what it could have been.

B R.

Yelp
Visited this spot once before the name change and really liked the beer. The four we tried recently were all pretty good but not life-changing. Hard to beat their happy hour prices though and they have terrific weekly menu specials. Really inviting indoor and outdoor spaces with a friendly hipster staff. Would be a fun local hangout spot if I lived closer.

Mzkrystle10 ..

Yelp
A group of us walked over to grab food and drinks. Great mix on music, excellent service, awesome food (we literally tried everything), beer, cocktails (my favs Cornstar, Hot Boy Summer and firing squad). This place is definitely my new go to when in the city! We'll be back!

Ruby T.

Yelp
For your full reviewing pleasure, allow me to provide an explanatory prologue. Consider that I live in this area. Not sawyer yards or biking from the heights-THIS area in a 1920s house converted into a crappy quadplex, where I know the bums and hustlers hanging outside the gas station by name. With exception of a few taquerias and McDonald's by N main, DT and the 5th W have the closest places to eat. NONE deliver to "the hood" (nope not even Pizza Hut), Grubhub began servicing this area ONLY recently- selection limited. Also, food delivery gets expensive fast. This is problematic. Imagine if you HAD to get on the freeway EVERY single time you were hungry and decided not to cook or were missing ingredients. Or that if you wanted to go out for a drink you had to trek a distance away, so maybe more often than not you just stay home, drinking gas station beer on the balcony, watching homeless push grocery carts full of stolen junk down the road. Sometimes treated to circling police helicopters with search lights or if it's really popping, evening entertainment might include the ambient sounds of the neighbors' gunshots followed by police sirens as they comb the neighborhood. Well folks, I fret no more! Far from a consolation prize, this place has good food, great specials and a nice selection of beer brewed in-house. Music was good too. Only suggestion is add a dart board, shuffleboard, buckhunter...something. Would be a GREAT place for trivia night too. This place should be packed, I'm guessing people don't know about it yet. Unless you live at sawyer yards, are lost OR on your way to buy crack, you're unlikely to be just passing by and stopping to check it out. But you should!

Tyler C.

Yelp
Super friendly staff, great food, great beer and cocktails. Plus the coffee in the morning is a great start too. They have events or specials every night of the week. Great place to hang out with friends and catch up.

Juan C.

Yelp
I love it here everything is perfect staff , food , drinks etc beautiful view stop by

Kristene H.

Yelp
This place was FANTASTIC! I had a craft cocktail and the pepperoni pizza. Both were outstanding. The bread on the pizza was to die for. My husband and daughter each had beer and said they were great. The owner came around several times to check on us. Close to St. Arnold's and Bad Astronaut Brewery. Can't wait to go back.

Kate H.

Yelp
This new brewery was formerly Local Group Brewing and I have to say that with the name change came an upgrade in the type of beers I prefer. Yes I'm one of those annoying IPA people. We happened in on a recent sunny Sunday afternoon (barely past noon I'd say) to enjoy some lovely patio weather, fine IPAs and tasty grinds. I can't tell you which beer I sampled but it was good enough to go for a second pint. In our group of eight or so people, just about every kitchen dish was represented and they were all good. I had a breakfast sandwich with fries, which were super stellar. What a perfect combo! After most of our group rode away, we had a chat with the new owner and we're impressed with his plans for the place. That is not say that the place needs more that it is right now, which is so much more than I personally found the former establishment to be. Oh and kuddos to the owners for the bike racks out front. Well placed and big enough to accommodate more that just a few of them. Im looking forward to many more sunny patio days with friends at this cool little near northside brewery.
