Where Are Hawaii’s Locally Sourced Butcher Shops? | Eater

"A community-supported fishery modeled on agricultural CSAs that directly connects fishers with consumers, offering radical transparency by naming the fisher and recording when and where catches were taken; it enforces standards that combine traditional Hawaiian fishing knowledge with Monterey Bay Seafood Watch and Marine Stewardship Council principles, requiring fishers to understand spawning seasons and species seasonality." - Martha Cheng

Local Ia…this hidden gem of Kaimuki, behind Kaimuki Superette & Mud, Hen. Fresh fish directly from local fisherman. Fresh fish differs daily. Other items they have regularly…fish and ulu chowder and fish gumbo. All homemade stock, frozen ready to heat and eat. They also have ahi jerky and doggy treats. They decided to open this store front about 3 weeks ago since the farmers market got a little bombarded by outsiders and made it difficult for locals to get their fresh fish without all the crowds and hassle. They have a little sign out front so you know where to turn in of 9th Ave/Waialae. Check out the pictures. Hope you enjoy this place as much as I did!

I love this place! The fish is always so fresh, and there are so many options from shrimp to oysters to gumbo as well! Finding a locally owned and operated business with sustainably, locally sourced food is so important. And I take it home to either either eat raw or prepared how I like!

Chyeeeee whatta spot! Fresh catch off the boat, home made goodies, and cheaper and fresher than anywhere else. Cooked fish from here lasted 5 days in the fridge and smelled delish after warming - why’s that? Cuz it’s fresh af from this spot! Whatcha waiting for? Go for it!

Bought sashimi grade tuna and ate it raw. It was delicious. This is a good place to get fresh local fish and seafood

Get your fish one step closer to da boat…and yours fresher. 2022.12: HPR The Conversation had an interview with the owner.

Yelp
I started my subsription with Local I'a probably.. a year ago? A few months ago? I absolutely love love love them. Tucked away right behind Mud Hen Water in Kaimuki, their entrance is small and kind of easy to miss. There are a few parking spots in front & a small door leading to some amazing fish. I believe you can walk in and buy fish/seafood by the pound, but I actually have a subscription where I pay X amount per month & get a "fair share" of fish per every 2 weeks. You can play around with the portion sizes and frequency too. I think currently I receive 1-1.5 lb of fish per share of whatever the catch of the week is. I absolutely love the fish I receive from Ashley. You know it's fresh, it's sustainable and proceeds go directly to local fisherman. Over the past few months, I have received so many different types of fish. Some common fish I see are sashimi grade mahi mahi, ono, and ahi. Sometimes the fishermen will bring in invasive species & I always try to grab those. I've picked up whole kanpachi and whole opakapaka. It's always a fun challenge to try and clean & break down a whole fish lol. I think the craziest thing I picked up from Ashley was mahimahi head & bones. It was actually offered for free, I ended up making mahi dashi and then picked off of the meat for lunch. On Saturday I picked up some sashimi grade striped marlin & a whole octopus. I made a marlin carpaccio and grilled octopus for dinner :) I just love how Ashley and the team make it easy for us to be more connected with our local food source. Although it's a tad more expensive than buying fish at a convenience store, it is nice to know that all the fish is coming from our local fishermen from our shores.

Yelp
First heard about this business from farmers market. They would have really good prices on fresh and frozen fish. This brick and mortar store is located right behind Mud Hen Water. Just turn into the parking lot and their entrance is at the end of it. Love their sashimi grade ahi. They have some good ahi Jerky, fish gumbo, etc. They even sell doggy treats. Best to call to see what fish they have as they do sell out from time to time. They are open Thursday - Sunday 10am-2pm.

Yelp
Fresh locally caught fish directly from the fisherman. We received a nice welcome and had a friendly chat with the fisherman working at the store helping his friend out with the business.

Yelp
We've bought their gumbo from the farmers markets but this was our first time buying fresh fish! Such a good price and locally sourced. Ahi was cheaper than some poke shops! Got some goodies for the dogs and humans. Customer service was spectacular- doesn't make you feel pressured to buy anything. Turned our ahi to tataki and maki!

Yelp
Uber fresh fish - to die for! When I moved to the island a month ago, I fantasized about fresh fish sustainably caught by local fishermen. I had been checking out the Local I'a website about a month before arriving, since I'm a big fan of CSA - their CSF model seemed like a good fit. Yes, you're going to pay a bit more than you will from Times or Costco, but if your budget allows, I would highly recommend splurging on their quality fish. You can even trace your catch back to where, when, and who caught it! So far, I've tried the Ono (sashimi and baked) and Aku (sashimi and seared). I'm in fish heav-en! Each Sunday, I pick up my share (1.5-2 lb) from the Mililani Farmers Market. I get there early, so I get to choose exactly which fish I want based on that week's selection from the ice chest. The fish look SO fresh and vibrant - hard to choose. If it's a large fish, it's already filleted. Not sure about the smaller fish, though I think you can get them whole. They gave me a small cooler for my fish on that first week and fill it with ice to keep the fish cold on the drive home. I asked for recipes, as I had NO idea what to do with Ono the first time. I'm a Midwest girl from the mainland, so knowing what to do with fish does not come naturally. She gave some tips, and I felt much more confident prepping the fish! I plan to be a CSF member for the near future and look forward to expanding my palate in the process.

Yelp
THEY HAD AKU, AKU POKE!! FOOD: Really fresh fish!! The price is little bit more but you paying for quality and actually knowing where the fish came from (they can even tell you the boat that it came from and the guy that caught it). SERVICE: Very friendly and outstanding service, very knowledgeable. Was actually able to ask about their product over Facebook before going down to the farmers' market today. VERDICT: Definitely will be back!!

Yelp
Great honest seafood. Everything that I purchased was of great quality and as described. I wish we had vendor like this in our area on mainland.

Yelp
Aloha ! AllI can say about these people ism ONO !! We were there in January 18 for 4 days and we ate there 3 of them. Would have been 4 but we got there at 10:05 PM first night. Juuuust missed it. The shrimp there is fantastic and Donna ate it every day. Everyone friendly and talkative, just a great atmosphere all around. We are coming back in December and this will be our first stop.
