Houston’s Most Underrated Restaurants

"Sometimes confused with Local Foods, this fast-growing local restaurant chain has five outposts in Houston, in Garden Oaks, Cypress, Katy, the Woodlands, and Fulshear, and deserves praise for having its own distinct charm. Its relaxed family-friendly atmosphere is a major draw, as is the quality farm to table menu, which incorporates many local meat and produce purveyors, and an impressive weekend brunch. Its all-day hours, seven days a week, make it the quintessential neighborhood gem." - Megha McSwain

We had an incredible dining experience at Local Table in the Garden Oaks location. The atmosphere is cozy yet vibrant — perfect for a casual night out or a special celebration. Every dish we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented (crab cakes, steak tacos, beef/lamb gyro, and molten lava cake). The menu has a great variety of options, from healthy bowls to hearty entrees, and everything we tried hit the mark. Our server Kevin was attentive, friendly, and made excellent recommendations. The drinks were also a standout — fresh cocktails and a solid wine selection. It’s clear this place is a local gem, and the staff takes pride in creating a welcoming experience. We’ll definitely be back soon. Highly recommend!

Solid choice for some good grub! Indoor & outdoor seating available. Excellent service with very tasty fare was our experience. Poke bowl was fantastic. Anaheim Chile chicken my wife got was tasty as well.

Local table honored us so well in the celebration of our engagement! Thank you for this delicious champagne 🥂 Michael and Danny were patient and kind in helping us with our menu recommendations and greeting us for our first time at local table. We started with coffee and the signature in house made, bread pudding! And this does NOT disappoint! We continued with our brunch options that are available until 3pm. Least to say there was no left overs 😏. We finished with a complimentary champagne toast for the celebration our new chapter in being engaged. Great atmosphere and beautiful views with complimentary music.

Google
The Manager Michael was very welcoming and made our experience great! It was our first time trying Local table and they made sure our first time was one to remember. The dessert was sooo good!!! My fiance and I were celebrating our engagement; Michael and Danny (our server) gave us champagne to celebrate us!! The chicken was crispy!! My fiance loved the texture. Take a look at the pictures !!!

Love that they have a variety of food to choose from! My boyfriend and I were craving different things so there was something for each of us. Service was great and food tasted amazing! Vegetables were cooked to perfection!

Google
We aren’t from Houston we just look a place close to us and we find that this looks good, we really enjoyed the food, we order a Prosciutto Caesar salad, ahi tuna poke bowl, and Local Kabob Plate. Everything was tasty and delicious, the salad was a little spicy 🌶️. The strawberry lemonade was yummy, but it’s the only drink that isn’t refilled, they didn’t explained this we notice when we got the check, because they offered a refill not another one. This place is a healthy and clean option, the atmosphere is good.

Google
A nice upscale restaurant a fun take on some of your favorites like hummus or spinach, artichoke dip and ceviche, friendly service, clean environment, clean restrooms, clean exterior inviting atmosphere. The price per plate is a little bit higher as I’d say it’s probably about a $12-$25 per plate Menu. Note my rating system: 1 Star: I wouldn't recommend 2 Stars: Didn't hit my standards 3 Stars: Average (nothing special) 4 Stars: Above Average. Would recommend. Still looking for the 5 Star. 5 Stars: Top of their game. Great food. Great service. Would recommend and plan on returning.

Google
I ordered the Southern Omelette and it was delicious. We ordered the mimosa flights which were all delicious. My favorite was the strawberry mimosa. Our waitress was very accommodating and helpful. The atmosphere was amazing. Good vibes and speedy service. I will definitely be visiting again.

Yelp
After wanting to try Local Table for a while, finally went in for a bite. My first impression as I walked in was they did a nice job with the dining room. Seating area was inviting, the bar was tempting me for a drink even though it was pretty early, and the kitchen was showcased ( they even have a pizza oven). We were promptly greeted and seated, all employees were super nice. Decided to try a veggie burger after having too much meat over the Memorial Day weekend. It had avocado and pico de gallo, which I really liked. The fries were also pretty good. Kids also had burgers, and they were devoured within 5 minutes so I guess they liked them :). Would like to go back and try their pizza to see what that's all about!

Yelp
Nice option with a big menu and enough variety that anyone should be able to meet their taste/any dietary restrictions. Fresh prep so the quality stands out. We were here for lunch on a Friday and were able to be easily seated. Staff was friendly, efficient, and attentive. I opted for their gyro plate and the portion was way more than generous - delicious and filling. Parking - private, shared strip center lot

Yelp
Star 4 food, 4 Service and 4 Ambience We usually visit the Cypress location which is Amazing. But I came to my old neighborhood near my former high school it was good.

Yelp
***01/18/2025 Only*** We frequently visit this restaurant, I mean almost on a weekly basis and service has always been superior. Tonight was definitely an off night. The place only had about 25% of the tables sat but our server didn't bother to check in. There was a table on the other side of the half wall (right next to us) that must have been a previous employee as a few of the servers popped over to chat with them. But our server, she just stood there and talked, talked, talked. Never once checked how our food was, never once asked for a refill (we did get a refill, because I asked someone else - but I could have definitely used a 3rd...). And after sitting with our plates pushed out to the edge of the table to indicate we were done eating, after about 7ish minutes we just walked to the host stand and the manager grabbed our check. Again, usually I am 5/5 with this spot as the food is amazing and service has always been spectacular, but tonight was definitely a miss. And it was just disappointing because we could literally make eye contact with our server while she chatted up this other table without even coming over to check on us or ask if we needed anything. Will we go back? Of course! But was very disappointed tonight.

Yelp
I got the Mama's Meatloaf, which came with green beans and mashed potatoes, and my husband got the Cheeseburger Americana. He is a big burger fan but called this one "trash." No flavor. My meatloaf was incredibly salty and had way too much filler, which resulted in a very mushy texture. My meatloaf also had noticeable veggies mixed into the loaf. Yuck. Won't return.

Yelp
Local. Met some friends for lunch and it was a great choice. It was a nice enough day to sit outside (and I'm not an outside sitting person bc of allergies). Ordered the bacon jam club sandwich with fruit cup instead of chips. I was interested in the bacon jam and it added a nice flavor to the club. It was slightly toasted so it was crisp and tender which is exactly how I like mine. Fruit was fresh. The service was spot on. Our server was friendly and she gave great suggestions and overall made the brunch experience even better. Def would come back and try some of the other menu items.

Yelp
Posting this review same-day, Local Table knocked it out of the park! Everything I ordered was absolutely spectacular. Throughly impressed with the quick service. My waitress, Nikki, was stellar. I ordered short rib southwestern quesadillas that melted in my mouth, a perfectly smoked old fashioned & a flavorful buffalo chicken wrap. This spot is plentiful with space and the patio looked really nice. 10/10, will be back to try more!

Yelp
Love this restaurant, and have enjoyed the many things I've tried from the menu - several reviews show that...but the Asian Chicken Salad...is not a repeat. Nice presentation, but there is too much dressing on the salad, making everything limp. With the spiciness of the dressing, makes it almost not enjoyable. And the chicken?? What exactly is this? It's pressed and dry, as if from a can, and does not taste like chicken. Waitstaff were friendly and great as always.

Yelp
Joined my girl friends for a lunch midweek. Friendly hostess and waiter. Great choice of items on the menu. I went with the lemon pasta thanks to yelp reviews. Great flavor and perfect for a lunch. I didn't add protein but chicken and shrimp were a choice. I also sipped in a blueberry cocktail- it was not too strong and accompanied the lemon pasta well. Huge space. Will return with the girls for sure!

Yelp
about once a month or so, i get to meet 3 friends there for brunch on a Saturday morning. menu is all kinds of stuff i like and have seasonal choices, including drinks. i'm sure it is as healthy as it looks. tastes great too. the service person is always attentive and knowledgable. we usually have the same person throughout our dining experience. Inside we get a booth, so there is a feeling of extra privacy.

Yelp
My family and I are such big fans of Local Table. We dine there all the time (specifically the Cypress location); but we were stoked to learn about the GOOF location. If you never dined a Local Table, I highly rec' it. Everyone in your group should find something to their liking on the menu: burgers, salads, pasta salads, pastas, pizzas, hot dinner plates (like gyro plates), and a solid brunch. My go-to is usually the lemon pasta or the Mediterranean salmon. For starters, get the cast iron goat cheese, cast iron spinach artichoke dip, and blue crab cakes. Seasonal cocktails are fun, and do try the frose. There's patio seating, a private dining room, bar seating, plenty of parking... Enjoy!

Yelp
Came here for a work lunch with a group of coworkers. The day was beautiful so we decided to sit outside. They have a really nice covered patio area that is perfect for when the weather is nice. Our group of 5 was immediately greeted after sitting down and our drink orders were promptly taken. We shared the hand-cut parmesan fries to start. They were nice and hot when they came out and also super crispy. They probably lasted a total of 3 minutes on the table before they were all gone. For my entrée I ordered the grilled salmon with wedge and orzo pasta salad. This is perfect for those who cant choose what to eat since it has everything. The salmon was super good along with the sauce it came with and the salads. I also really loved the portions! Not huge portions but also not small portions...they were just right! Everyone else at my table really enjoyed the food as well as the service. We were there during our lunch break and we were able to be in and out in an hour and half. I noticed they had big drink menu and that they seem to be a popular brunch spot so I will have to come back to try that.

Yelp
Danny and Michael were amazing in the service and welcoming outreaches. The food was amazing!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I have enjoyed the Asian Chicken Salad here many times and have ordered for delivery a few times. Tonight's delivery was a bit disappointing. The vegetables were fresh and delicious but the amount of chicken was minuscule and the dressing was extra spicy. I could not find any sesame seeds or cilantro in the salad as they describe. I understand that times are tough but for $17, this salad missed the mark.
google avatar

Laura L.

Yelp
Went for a casual Saturday breakfast and it did not disappoint! Our server Jaecob was friendly and very attentive. The drinks and food were yummy and on point. The bonus was when Michael, the manager, stopped in to check on us and just demonstrated how much he valued our business. I appreciate this sort of service in a time when a lot of service industry act like the patron is a bother to them. The folks at Local Table were a class act.

Yelp
Walked in and ambiance is very nice and inviting. Service was good, but you order your own food, and they bring it to you. Food was okay. Crunchy sandwich was the recommended favorite menu item, I personally did not like it. However, the pasta was amazing on the off menu. Overall it was okay.

Yelp
I came here for the second time ever last night and had to get that very delicious, tangy, buttery, herby Lemon Pasta with Chicken again. Very soft noodles and really juicy, soft chicken pieces with good flavor in them. The capers, sun-dried tomato pieces, basil and lemon aromas were all so good in the entree. The piece of buttery garlic bread was very good and crispy on the edges. I was full, but love the bread pudding and chocolate lava cake desserts here when I have room. I also got a very fresh, delicious Margherita Pizza togo for sharing with my cousin at midnight. It had a really good, coal-fire crust with terrific crispy texture and seasoned taste. The cheese, arugula and cherry tomatoes were all very good on this pizza. The pesto sauce was very tasty and not too earthy, just right. I never had a Margherita pizza with pesto sauce before, so this was an interesting change-up to try. Very good, efficient and friendly service from my server as well.

Yelp
I thank you to Elena she has amazing service and outstanding consideration. The ambiance is very relaxing and calming. Also the food is very fresh.

Yelp
Mediterranean Fusion Bowl is THE BEST. No Vegan here, but could eat it every day and twice on Sunday!!!

Randy F.

Yelp
First time visit, surpassed our expectations, Gabby, beautiful soul, great waitress. Michael. The manager showed a lot of attention in caring to our needs. Highly recommend this restaurant. The meatloaf and gyro plate were both outstanding. Ended the meal with bread pudding. Can never go wrong. Very nice atmosphere and very good food!

Matthew W.

Yelp
I have been to Local Table with my family a few times before, but it is always a pleasure to get one server in particular. Today she surprised my little girl with a complimentary cookie designed with chocolate syrup to look like Cinderella's carriage. She absolutely loved it! We intend to return and ask for Alex, she was spectacular!

Yelp
Early October, my friend and I stopped here for a mid-afternoon brunch after a trip to Pasadena. Since it's close to my house, figured I'd check this spot out and see what people are raving about. We got seated outside and had attentive service. It was a bit loud with people next door playing cornhole and going crazy with college football happening. Guess they can't let people eat in peace. Anyways, brunch drinks are always a staple with a meal so I went with a red sangria while my friend got the strawberry spritz. Both are sweet (but not too sweet) and have a hint of carbonation from the soda water to make the drinks go down easy. For eats, I decided on the smoked salmon avocado toast w/ scrambled eggs while my friend ordered the french omelette sandwich. Both dishes came with herb-roasted new potatoes and a persian cucumber dill salad. The potatoes and salad were awesome especially the salad, I could've ordered just a large side of that and I'd be happy. The salmon and avocado on the toast had good flavor although eating it was a bit difficult as the toast kept falling apart; it might've been the weight of the eggs added to it. Still good though. My friend loved her omelette sandwich which she claimed was one of the better ones she's eaten. Overall, we were happy with our choices. The menu also has appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, wraps/tacos, and entrees such as salmon, pasta, grilled chicken, and kabobs. The drink menu contains several cocktails such as a cucumber martini and a whiskey peach cocktail which I'll need to try next time. Brunch is your typical hours (Saturday & Sunday). They have several locations in the Houston area and all their ingredients and food items are locally sourced which you can tell from the flavors and scents as you walk in. Quite welcoming! Look forward to trying other items here and glad this is in my neck of the woods!

Yelp
Second time here and if anything the experience was better! As we were sitting enjoying our appetizer Michael came to check in making sure we were satisfied with everything, which we were of course. My boyfriend and I felt so welcome as he remembered we came for the first time yesterday and appreciated us stopping by once more. Luis also stopped by our table to check on us and had a brief conversation which was entirely nice. The ambiance of the cafe is beyond welcoming and the staff are always ready to serve with a smile! 10/10 this is now our favorite place to come :)
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Coworker and I came by for a easy lunch. Loved the vibes of the space. A lot of the tables were nicely spread out which was nice to allow people their own space for conversations. We started with the baked goat cheese. Definitely good. The bread was really nicely toasted. I had one of the wraps and ended up taking half of it home with me since it was so much food. I opted out of the wedge salad for another choice which was no problem. The service was night. No problems. I'd like to go back to try more options.
google avatar

Kyla W.

Yelp
Came here for brunch with a group of 7. Menu has lots of options! I loved the outdoor patio and great / speedy service even for a large group. Cons: patio had wayyy to many flies that kept flying into our mimosas. Totally understandable that the restaurant couldn't help it but maybe some fly traps around? It was a bit annoying at one point. Also, the food wasn't as flavorful / seasoned to my taste buttt that's just my preference. Pros: lively brunch spot, cute photo ops, great service, vibrant atmosphere and pretty good prices. It is a a little out of the city, but a great place for family brunch / lunch, mimosa flight is a must try, strawberry bigmosa was delicious as well!
google avatar

Kristina W.

Yelp
Service was great but the food was mediocre. We had a club sandwich that was pretty good as well as gyro and poke bowl that were just ok.

Mallory T.

Yelp
We love Local Table! We come here all the time, and it never disappoints. Michael, the manager, is so welcoming, and Rick, our waiter, is the best--super friendly and on top of things. The food is amazing, so fresh and flavorful, and it comes out so fast! The atmosphere is really laid-back and perfect for catching up with friends or family. It's one of our favorite spots, and we'll definitely keep coming back!
google avatar

Eunice M.

Yelp
I love coming to this place! Jose Rivera has amazing customer service. He is nice and polite. Extremely helpful. I will continue to come to this location! The food is amazing too!
google avatar

Jessica S.

Yelp
This is my 2nd time coming here! The 1st time I came I loved it and I had to bring my family. The experience and ambiance is great! The food tastes very fresh and it's seasoned just right. I plan on coming here again despite the drive!
google avatar

Yelp
DECEPTIVE PRACTICES- I'm tired of being duped by restaurants. I'm tired of restaurants giving low quality food that they know don't meet standards. I ordered chocolate molten lava cakes. What I received was dry cupcakes with frosting on the inside. For $9 a pop i could have had two delicious CRAVE cupcakes. I spent $18, so, four! This restaurants knows that what they sent out the door were not chocolate molten lava cakes. So, it's a 1 for taste, dishonesty, and stealing my hard-earned money.
google avatar

Bryan L.

Yelp
What an awesome atmosphere and service! Headed to a concert in the heights and stopped by for a date night and it was amazing. Luis the manager was top notch (sorry Lopez)!

Adrian Z.

Yelp
We came in for the first time to have brunch. The food was great, the service was spectacular. The manager Michael Lopez came in to check on us and was beyond helpful. He even gave us a free dessert because it was our first time!! We couldn't have had a better experience here.
google avatar

Liz N.

Yelp
Local Table exceeded my expectations! I wasn't sure cause the menu was pretty big and there were lots of options, but the dishes we got were really good. First, service was really good. Our waiter was really attentive and our food came out quickly. The restaurant had a super chill vibe and was causal, so it'd be a great place to hang out. Started off with the ahi tuna tartare. It was delish! The tuna sat on a bed of Guac and it was served with homemade potato chips. For the entrees, we got the Kebob plate with both chicken and beef and the Anaheim grilled chicken. Both were really good. The grilled chicken was grilled perfectly and that Chile mushroom cream sauce hit the spot! For dessert, we got the white and dark choc mousse cake. It was ok and prob my least favorite part of the meal. Parking was easy. They share a lot with the other surrounding businesses.
google avatar

Olivia S.

Yelp
Good spot for brunch. A mix of classy and casual based on the inside decor and seating. We were a group of 4, but they were easily hosting plenty of larger groups the same morning. Looked like it was kid friendly, too!
google avatar

Diem A.

Yelp
Great neighborhood restaurant. The goat cheese appetizer was amazing. The ahi tuna appetizer not so much. The guacamole was bland and watery. Drinks and service were good. Parking lot is small.
google avatar

Moriah H.

Yelp
Service is super fast and food is yummy. Parking is easy. I think this is a good brunch spot and I have not gone for dinner. I also like how they support local Oak Forest HOA events. Ambiance is clean and modern but I wouldn't say it's super special. This is a comfortable, couple-steps-above-ihop family and lunch date eatery.

Alyssa C.

Yelp
First time coming and it was so good! Really enjoyed the crab cake benedict! The male manager was very kind and even took care of the croissant French toast because they relocated us due to a big party coming in (: Unfortunately our server (female name that starts with a T") did not feel that the food should've been taken care of and made a comment. We will be back but will be requesting a different server.
google avatar

Libby H.

Yelp
Overall a great experience I had here for brunch! The options are great. They are plentiful so I feel like anyone can find something to eat here. I chose the avocado salmon toast. The cream cheese on this was delicious! My friend and I were here for hours just talking and the wait staff was so nice and always checking on us! The vibe of the restaurant is nice too - just overall nice, clean, friendly with great food!
google avatar

Yelp
A nice 5-Star experience thanks to my better half! Came here for dinner in the midst of date night before hitting the improv around the corner. My wife picked the spot and she was spot on! Nice, clean, modern atmosphere, very inviting off jump. We beat the dinner crowd so we were seated immediately. I started with a Pumpkin Stout beer which was a perfect start! Great tasting seasonal beer with a mild sweetness and even a light smokiness. For dinner, I got a Honey Ginger Glazed Salmon. Everything on that plate was top notch! Let's start with the veggies, everybody's least favorite. When I saw the Brussel Sprouts sitting on top of all the other veggies, I immediately became disappointed because I *HATE* Brussel Sprouts but let me tell you, these people just made me a believer! The entire assortment of veggies (including the Brussel Sprouts) were excellent, they were seasoned well with a nice sweet finish added to them. The rice was also really good. Naturally, I saved the Best for last; the salmon was amazing! Perfectly seasoned and balanced sweet glaze. It was cooked to perfection. I killed the whole plate and took no prisoners! For dessert, we split a croissant bread pudding. Wow, talk about mind blowing! It was soft and goey on the inside with the added outside crunch of the croissant. Nicely sweet and the ice cream on top was perfect addition. My entire meal was thoroughly enjoyable. I can see returning here if in the area again!
google avatar

Huyen C.

Yelp
A new local spot that had a great vibe. Everyone was very welcoming. Our waiter was knowledgeable about the menu & helpful. We ordered the following (although not pictured, I forgot!): Hummus Brussel Sprouts Ceviche Crab cakes All of the appetizers were delicious. I did really like the crab cakes and brussel sprouts. For the entrees, I got the gyro platter & my husband got the Hawaiian Pizza. The pizza was good and had a hint of BBQ. My gyro platter was also yummy & the fries were extra crunchy. Friends at the table ordered the Lemon pasta and burger which they would recommend. While we waited for the dessert, the manager, Dave came by to tell us about the menu & was extremely kind and welcoming. The local table is very special to him and the owners. For dessert, we ordered bread pudding, carrot cake & cheesecake. The best dessert was hands down the bread pudding with a topping of ice cream. All of the drinks were great & we would definitely come back to try brunch!
google avatar

Melissa H.

Yelp
The ambiance was very nice. It's not too loud inside. They had a singer that played some nice contemporary songs. We were seated rather quickly. Our server, Helena, was excellent. I liked her very much. She was attentive and kind. Our food came out promptly. We had the spinach artichoke dip, lemon pasta, and chicken salad sandwich. All these choices were delicious. The parking lot was uncrowded and it's easy to park. No need to pay for valet or to park. I thought the prices were average and not overpriced. We even watched the Astros game on all the TV's which was a big plus. We want to come back to try some other menu items. The bathrooms were clean. We have nothing negative to mention.

Yelp
Ordered to-go for family dinner this week as our first time here. The salmon was under cooked and had a rubber texture and the kids cheese pizzas were cold and looked as if they were sitting all day. The shrimp tacos were great and Brussel sprouts pretty tasty. Not sure if this experience was due to getting my order to-go. The facility did look nice inside so maybe dine in for better meals.

Jason M.

Yelp
They dropped a sauce cup - it shot all over me & my clothes. They did nothing but bring napkins. The server apologized - of course, it was an accident. But they didn't take anything off the bill, didn't see send the manager over.

Jeni T.

Yelp
This place came through for me when I had a holiday catering order fall through at another place. Even though they had stopped taking holiday orders, Michael did me a huge favor and took my order. Other restaurants did not offer the same. They were so awesome and kind. I took a chance on this place having never had their food before and I was so glad. Their mashed potatoes with poblano gravy was amazing and an interesting twist on a traditional side. I can't wait to come in for a sit down meal and experience their regular menu. Thank you!!

Brianne T.

Yelp
The service was very good and fast, the food was good and didnt take long. The menu was small but good, the vibe in the place was very nice and the music was low, i could hear my waitress very well, she was sweet and even asked me about allergies, which ive never been asked before in a restaurant. I will most definitely be back.

Sophie S.

Yelp
Farmers goat cheese omelette was delicious, came on a Sunday morning and it was fairly empty so service was quick!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely love the ahi tuna poke bowl and gyro/lamb platter. I literally dream about these dishes. Their tzatziki is to die for!! Their tuna is excellent quality. These are the only 2 dishes I've tried here and I repeatedly go back to eat them.

Yelp
Great tasting and a nice variety of dishes. The staff is beyond friendly, typically sit in the bar area and always make me feel special. The space is comfortable, family friendly, and a great spot to relax and unwind.

Yelp
I came here on a whim to meet a friend since we both live on opposite sides of the town. We came in the middle of the week on a Wednesday for dinner. We were really eager to try something new and noticed this place has a lot of mediterranean options. My friend ordered the kabab plate and I had the Amaheim chicken. I also tried their Frosè. The frosè definitely hit the spot, but unfortunately my chicken dish did not. My friends kabob dish wasn't her favorite either. She didn't care for the yogurt sauce the plate comes with. Everything was edible and we were so hungry so we went ahead and ate it.. but it wasn't what we had considered "the spot hitter". We had a great server and the ambience was awesome.. we just may have not chosen the best fit dish for us. Oh well, maybe next time!
