Recently visited Baron at Viejas. We love Viejas and have been very frequent guests for decades. But this eatery was a failure for us. The place is clean, the service and ambiance were good. However, while the salads were good, and the tacos good, the fried chicken was the worst we had ever had in 60+ years! That it was served at all makes me wonder about the judgment of the cook and the waitress. It was dry, flavorless, and not as good as the green beans served with it. The pieces were also so tiny, shriveled up in fact! Who in the world as a cook would dare serve such "food" in the name of fried chicken? Dry as dust, flavorless. Will not return to Baron ever. Some served food is so bad that it makes you never return to the place for any reason at all. I have rarely had that kind of experience. Viejas management, please quality check that cook for the sake of your business. Viejas deserves far better. I am very sad to give this review of a Viejas establishment. But I love Viejas so much that I have to provide this honest review in hopes that it will be taken seriously by the Viejas management for the purpose of positive change. Thank you for your time. We look forward to visiting the Grove at Viejas which is a far better quality restaurant.
I must add a bit of humor to this review in order to reward myself for having been served the worst fried chicken ever by a cook who has poor judgment. NEVER OVERCOOK ANYTHING! You cannot undo overcooked food and it is a sin to waste food.
I hope that the cook responsible for having the unmitigated gall of serving overcooked fried chicken never does this again to anyone. If that cook does so, I can only hope that s/he is visited by an entire clan of chickens from a local chicken farm, escape from it, secretly load themselves into a large truck by the hundreds, driven via I-8 to Viejas' wonderful casino by none other than Colonel Sanders himself who has risen from the dead from his resting place in Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky, unloading themselves from the large truck (leaving the engine on for a quick escape), led by the Colonel waiving his famous cane and smelling of chicken grease, enter the casino lobby past the wonderful guards, through the maze of slot machines and crowds of gamblers amazed at the sight of angry chickens on the march clucking, some in English, others in Spanish, as they hastily make themselves to Baron leaving a trail of loose feathers behind them, perhaps some stopping quickly along the way to visit the spotlessly clean restrooms to freshen up (ladies gotz to look good, after all), all the way to Baron, then to push themselves past the wonderful hostesses, being careful to not lose too many feathers all over the clean floor, quickly to enter the kitchen and find the cook, wherein the chickens jump on the cook by the dozens, taking turns pecking at his/her face and body and as they do the hundreds of other chickens crowd into the Baron kitchen and scream at the guilty cook (some in English, others in Spanish) demanding why s/he utterly wasted the death of some of their dear friends by woefully OVERCOOKING them, effectively rendering them inedible and tasteless. Perhaps at that moment, the Colonel with much frustration steps up to the cook, gently brushes aside some of the chickens atop the cook's face and head, and declares to the cook as the cook is still being abused by other of the chickens: "Step aside you untoward cook, I will show you how to cook fried chicken the right way! Never OVERCOOK chicken!" At that epic moment, the Colonel dons an apron and is assisted by the chickens who also don smaller aprons in frying up the most awesome fried chicken ever... After a long day's work, the colonel and the chickens, being exhausted, drag themselves back into the truck after making themselves back through a grateful cheering crowd, only to find that, the engine being left on for a quick getaway, has run out of gas. But Viejas management, being great at what they do, seize the moment and decide to hire the Colonel and the chickens, and they fry up the best chicken ever, and everyone at Viejas lived happily ever after. And patrons come from all of the globe to enjoy the famous fried chicken at Viejas prepared so perfectly by the well compensated and highly appreciated Colonel and his crew of gorgeous, well-primped lady chickens who live by the motto: "If you are going to kill us, fry us up right!" Then, just while the fried chicken problem was being solved and Viejas patrons were enjoying the tasty fried chicken,...some PETA advocates show up at Viejas and try to ruin the whole thing to most every attending Viejas patron's dissatisfaction.......no respect for a resurrected Colonel back from the dead and now up to his neck in chicken grease, or for the accompanying well-primped lady chickens who courageously and passionately avenged their abused sisters.
