9 Best Restaurants for Oysters in the Triangle - Eater Carolinas

"Located in the Durham Food Hall, Locals serves oysters on the half shell, Calabash platters with fried oysters, and charbroiled oysters topped with maitre d’hotel butter. Not to mention, Locals supplies restaurants across the Triangle, and customers can grab their own peck of oysters for their next at-home roast, too. Budget tip: On Wednesdays, oysters are only $2 each." - Catherine Currin

Google
Just the best fresh seafood from long time neighbors. Always a good recommendation from the staff, we got Core Sound oysters. When strolling the State Farmer's Market, go through the shops. Pair your catch with a Chatham Hill wine!

Bought Spanish mackerel this past weekend at the Raleigh Farmer's market and it was -phenomenal-. So fresh, easy to cook, and absolutely delicious. I cannot wait to go back and explore their other options! (For anyone curious, I used a salt, pepper, paprika and turmeric rub for the fillets, then a chimichurri sauce to finish after a pan fry. The fish held up against, and paired well with, the flavors of the sauce.)

I love raw oysters and never passed up an opportunity to have a dozen or two shucked for me, often at the now-closed Locals in the Transfer Co. Food Hall. When the pandemic hit and my autoimmune disorder prevented me from enjoying eating in restaurants, I either had to learn to shuck my own or go without. Locals has remained my go-to for fresh oysters raised on the NC coast. I place my order online and pick up at the State Farmers Market. The Locals team are very knowledgeable about oysters in general and NC farmed oysters in particular when it come to briny-buttery balance, what variety are best raw, and how splintery the shells are when shucking. I really appreciate their expertise; making it possible for me to still have my oysters.

Google
Locals Seafood has, hands down, the best seafood in Raleigh! Incredibly fresh, regionally caught or sustainably farmed fish, shrimp, oysters, crab & more. Supports NC fishermen. Been buying their seafood for years & they have never dissappointed! Best to pre-order online.

We have subscribed to the weekly program for a couple of years now. We receive seasonal , locally caught seafood. We love it. I love the freshness, the seasonality and the great service every week when I pick up my fish on Thursdays. I love chatting with the gentleman on different kinds of seafood they got that week, cultural meaning of different fish, favorite parts of fish from other parts of the world. I'm proud to support the Local seafood!

Google
I’m glad that there’s a business that helps support and vet local seafood businesses. Local’s makes eating responsibly easy. Their seafood shares are affordable and have generous portions. It has introduced me to cooking many fish and soft shell crab. Also, There are oysters are always delicious and well cleaned!

Google
Purchased what I had purchased in the past. Dry scallops, not wet scallops which was what I got. You can't pan sear a wet scallop. Ruined a fine risotto with roasted red pepper and orange & lemon zest. Can't call to complain because lack of staff leaves them with no one to answer the phone. Was advised to come visit the location with concerns. BLEEP!!! I'm supposed to drive 40 miles each way and burn $15 of gas to tell them that they sold me inferior product. The positive outcome was that the raccoons seemed to enjoy the meal immensely. Needless to say I won't be going back.

Can always find fresh seasonal seafood that are caught sustainably off the coast of NC. I've met 2 of their staff, Steve & Kent, who have always been nice and offered great information & recommendations. They always try to give me a good selection (e.g. making sure the crab has both claws on). I had blue crabs last week and they were so delicious - sweeter than any other times I had blue crabs -- well at least as good as ones we caught ourselves in CT.

Yelp
The finest, freshest seafood from our coast. These people REALLY care about what they provide. It happens to be soft shell season right now and I cannot tell you how good they are - they are exceptional. All of their seafood is pristine and all of their staff friendly, knowledgeable and courteous. For North Carolina seafood, Local's is absolutely the best.

Yelp
Friendly knowledgeable team. Highly recommend for fresh seafood. First time I tried them and will be back. Support local !

Yelp
Woohoo as good as it gets or at least one of my top 3 choices for seafood! I'd highly recommend signing up for the Friday emails, this allows you to preorder and not show up in hopes they still have something on Saturday morning. We purchase from Locals at least monthly and last weekend we opted for Black Drum and crabmeat (note - I am from the eastern shore of MD and they have lovely and sweet crabmeat) - totally saves me a 6 hour trip home to the shore. Their prices are fair and seafood is fresh, what more could you ask for? Plus you are supporting local fisherman, it's a win-win!

Yelp
Fresh, flavorful oysters. I particularly like these oysters (I believe they are Core Sounder oysters grown in Jarrett Bay according to their website) because they are creamy and not overly salty. I purchased them from Locals Seafood at the Raleigh Farmers Market for $15/dozen. I did not pre-order, however, the employee working the stand recommended pre-ordering so that you get some before they run out. I have been a few times after they had run out. He said you can pre-order online. I have not yet figured out how to do this since their mobile website kept rerouting me back to where I started. I may try again using a computer. Overall these oysters are definitely worth the effort shucking them and the cost - I would purchase them again. They are not too difficult to shuck. I do not have a shucking knife so I used a screwdriver and hammer. I ate them raw without anything added to them. Oysters are vital components of ocean ecosystems and packed with nutrients including vitamin D, zinc, selenium, copper, and vitamin B12. I highly recommend grabbing some fresh, local oysters while they are in season!

Yelp
I have a house Down East and enjoy the freshest seafood imaginable there but my primary residence is in Raleigh. I have been searching for comparable quality here and can state after several years of experience with them that Locals is the best in the Triangle. They don't sell it if it isn't fresh and your nose will confirm that. Sure they cost more but it is worth it if you value the freshest fish and their commitment to sustainable NC fishery.

Yelp
Rip off. Prices are jacked, quality is poor. Do not waste your money on this business.

Yelp
I've always wanted to make oyster dressing for Thanksgiving. So this year was the year, but where to find fresh oysters? I Googled fishmongers and came across Locals Seafood located at the State Farmers Market. It's best to preorder. Go to their website and place your order and select your pick up location: State Farmers Market, Chapel Hill, Western Wake Farmers Market in Morrisville, or Weaver Street Market. It was so easy. I picked up my order at the State Farmers Market, so go early because the line gets pretty long. They're super friendly and have a great selection of local-caught seafood.

Yelp
Oysters and hush puppies are both amazing!! These may actually be the best hush puppies I've had in my entire life... they hushed my puppy!

Yelp
We've enjoyed the seafood we got from here. We've had friendly service and have signed up for a number of sessions of CSF in the past 2 years as its nice to try new things. There was probably only 1 fish out of 20 varieties I didn't like...but now I know. I really like the fact they provide so much information on how and where the fish are caught.

Yelp
Just wanted to balance the other review and say that I have called them numerous times before to check on the availability of certain items and they have been polite and courteous in their response.

Yelp
Amazingly fresh and delicious seafood! We picked up dry packed scallops from Locals Seafood at the Chapel Hill Farmer's market this morning and cooked them tonight. Wonderful - as good or better as any you could get in a high end restaurant!

Yelp
My one experience there was a pretty obvious rip off in my opinion. They raved up and down about how theirs was one of the few places where one can buy authentic wild caught sockeye Atlantic salmon. They charged me $19/pound. And it was frozen. They raved about how good it was though. I bought some, cooked according to the time specified in a respected cook book, and found it to be tough. The next day, I happened to be at Harris Teeter. They had wild caught sockeye Atlantic salmon for $8/pound. And it was fresh, not frozen. It looked the same. And the attendant assured me that it was truly wild caught.

Yelp
Normally a reasonable place to get fresh seafood and advice. However, today, Saturday 5/30, I went by after lunch to see if they had any shrimp and I was rudely informed it wasn't shrimp season. Oh, ok. Sorry. I then asked about the price on another item that I had bought last week and I was again rudely informed that if I wanted the price that I got last week I needed to call ahead. WTH? I didn't call ahead last week! I then asked about the seafood club, I was told to go look at the flippin' website. 1* on attitude, 4* on product. 2.5*
