San Diego’s Essential Coffee Roasters and Cafes

"One of the major players in North County’s coffee scene with shops in Encinitas, La Costa, Carlsbad, and Solana Beach, Lofty also operates a bustling cafe in Little Italy. (Their beans are roasted in its Encinitas location on Highway 101.) With an expanded breakfast and lunch menu with pastries, wraps, and bowls, Lofty has plenty of room for lingering over coffee, food, and conversation." - Helen I. Hwang

What do you want from a great Coffee Bar? First: great coffee. Second: high quality fresh food prepared with a unique twist that makes it stand out. Third: atmosphere, Lofty earns its name from the large, elevated patio that sets it back from the foot traffic on the street. Fifth: are the staff that knows their products and are masters in preparation and presentation of all things Lofty.

Lofty is my favorite coffee shop in the area! The staff is all super friendly and I’m obsessed with their food menu! I also love that they brew their own coffee beans. You can taste the difference. Highly recommend trying Lofty if you haven’t already, you won’t be disappointed!

Google
This is a delightful coffee shop, where I enjoyed a morning date with my wife. We only drank the house coffee, but the coffee hit the spot. To add to the atmosphere, Lofty Coffee played music (contemporary soft rock/ jazz). The service was kind and thoughtful, but the crew was busy. Several customers had their laptops, and they appeared to appreciate the environment. Lofty Coffee has an interesting pledge (please see photo). Yes, I would take my wife back to Lofty Coffee for another coffee date.

When in the north county San Diego area, Lofty Coffee - La Costa is one of my favorite places. The coffee, food, and service are amazing. The staff's service and friendly demeanor contribute to the inviting atmosphere, making customers feel genuinely welcome. Lofty roasts their own coffee and has a variety of crafted coffees. The selection of pastries and food items complement the drinks, adding to the overall experience. The quality of the coffee and food and the overall service and ambiance makes Lofty Coffee what it is. Lofty is an excellent spot for those seeking wonderful coffee and food in a charming setting

One of the worst breakfasts I ever had for $16.50. I attempted to prepare it myself, but it was a disaster and my hands were messy afterwards. The tater tots were good but without ketchup it was pointless. The bread crust was rock hard so I cut it off but then the bread was too floppy to hold the sandwich up so I had to cut it into bits to eat. I would happily pay $6 for this, even knowing I have to spend the time building it, so I feel ripped off $10.50. The coffee is good, but VERY expensive. I do recommend this place for a coffee if you're stuck near one and have a lot of cash to spare, but if you care about value for money, don't bother. I should have gone to Denny's where they prepare the food for you.

Google
Excellent coffee. It was highly recommended and I know why. Good roast and taste to my cold brew. Had a taste of an espresso and it was MUCH better than the "trendy chain place that likes creepy fish women" espresso. I had a Lofty-Style Nola cold brew and and it was a good coffee flavor and was very very good. I also had the Organic Acai Bowl and all the ingredients were fresh and the bowl was worth getting. My group had a variety of their other coffees and everyone had positive feed back. The french toast was not something I bought, but a friend in the group did and they wouldn't shut up about it...seriously. 😉 Come in with expectations of good coffee and good food and you will leave happy. Value for the cost. Cheap is cheap but good is worth what it costs and this place is the latter.

Google
Everything is delicious. Great service. Coffees and teas are good. I try something new everytime I go.

Google
Super pretty and clean space. Staff were friendly as well. The coffee/tea were not very good though. I love matchas (traditional/unsweetened) and this was very unpleasant. I think it may have been the house almond milk but it tasted too grassy like hay which overpowered any of the matcha. I was bummed to pay $7 for a drink I couldn’t not finish. The cold brew drink my husband got was $9 which just seems like a lot for nothing spectacular.

Yelp
The coffee speaks for itself, very good quality and flavorful. I tend to get a latte or a traditional black coffee and my wife is a devout fan of their almond milk latte. They do have many other drink options on their menu but I tend not to venture off from what I know I like early in the mornings. The croissant, sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich is a 10/10. It comes with a chutney that adds the slightest bit of sweetness to the savoriness of the sausage and it is delicious! I was recently down in the area visiting and made this a stop every single morning for the breakfast sandwich and a coffee. The staff is always very nice as well. They have a nice outdoor patio area and a few tables inside as well. Over all the space is very clean, friendly and welcoming.

Yelp
Cold morning tea and breakfast. Cozy up to a friend and fun atmosphere at lofty! Service is great and food is satisfying. Drinks look pretty and hit the spot on a cold morning. My barista put a splash of charcoal into my London Fog and it not only looked amazing but it tasted amazing. Full of flavor. The House Toastie was a satisfying bite to start the day.

Yelp
Love this Lofty location!! Best coffee and food and the team members are SO HELPFUL!! Emily especially was awesome and took great care of us! Will be back!

John K.

Yelp
Great customer service and location. Food menu is awesome too. Outside and inside seating is convenient and comfortable for studying.

Jen F.

Yelp
Visited this Beacon site today, ughh!! The traffic flow is poorly planned. The condiment station in the back of the building where customers are seated. And the staff are disengaged and couldn't care less about customer service. Yet coffee is very expensive, tastes bad, and yet they ask for a tip with each order. No, I don't think so!! This past business trend is failing consumers! Won't return again.

Yelp
The service at this location is really positive and they really go out of their way to give a positive experience. The next time I am traveling in the La Costa area I will surely definitely suggest this cute little coffee shop to my colleges.

Breanna M.

Yelp
I met here with a friend and we ate breakfast and got a coffee. The line was long but people working were nice. The dirty chai was okay 6/10 I would probably try something different next time. The disappointment was with the breakfast. The sausage and eggs were cold and the most awful part is I could taste dishwasher on my fork or plate. I couldn't tell which one. I will be back but most likely won't order food again.

Yelp
This place is cute! It's just really f**king expensive. Tea and a superfood bowl will run you $25. Otherwise the tea and the superfood bowl I had were really good. The woman who took my order was very friendly and I felt welcome. If you have infinite money, then definitely go here because that's literally the only issue I had with it. I already wince a bit spending $20 at sweetgreen for a salad in the same parking lot. Thats La Costa, baybee...

Yelp
Food: gluten free options are great. With a number of different options. Their donuts are amazing! Coffee: specialty coffees are great except for the actual coffee... very fruity and light. Some might like that, just not our style. Service: great service, nice and helpful.

Hannah R.

Yelp
Every time I visit this Lofty, I am met with some of the most radiant smiles and kind people. They're always willing to accommodate my coffee order. I love their speciality cold brew! Keep it up, you guys!!

Ryan P.

Yelp
Coffee is pretty good but the bad service takes the fun and joy out of grabbing a good coffee. Why do the workers have to be snobbish and rude. Doesn't make sense.

Alex M.

Yelp
I LOVE LOFTY!!! The team is amazingly friendly and work so hard to cater to us guests. I admire their tender smiles and readiness to help. God bless Lofty La Costa!

Yelp
I used to frequent this location and the ones in Solana Beach and Encinitas very often. The coffee was consistently good back then, and I used to rave about it to all my friends. This was my first visit since last year, and the customer service has drastically gone downhill here. I understand that everyone has their bad days, but all three employees working behind the counter?? It wasn't busy when I first approached, and I smiled at the staff. All the girls looked away or down, and it took them a bit to finally greet me as if I was inconveniencing them. That was the first red flag... After receiving my mocha, I found it very bitter and not made correctly as requested. When I kindly asked the barista to remake the drink, she gave me a blank stare and didn't say anything before proceeding to do so. The second one wasn't good either, so I just accepted that the quality had gone down. Bummer... I also ordered a pastry and was waiting for it near the area where they used to put their coffee and food take-out orders. None of the staff acknowledged that items were waiting on the opposite side of the counter. They just looked at me a few times until I finally asked if the pastry was ready after the line grew and then died down. My pastry was now not warm at this point... As someone who worked in customer service for a long time, I'm baffled at how poorly trained and/or unmotivated these employees were. Missing the old days of the quality coffee and warm hospitality :(

Yelp
The atmosphere here is the only thing worth it. Coffee is pretty mid grade at best and all the pasteries/cookies I've had are just okay. Cookies are usually too soft they're almost undercooked. The tea is EXCELLENT and the one thing I'd recommend.

Yelp
The mint matcha latte from here has never let me down! super tasty. Unfortunately, I tried the hummus avocado toast and was disappointed. I was definitely skeptical about the hummus on avocado toast but I wanted to give it a shot since i've never tried it before. It really does not go well together. The avocado slices were also so thick it was difficult to eat, I would not recommend it. The food options don't seem the best, but the pastries are yummy! I will continue to come for matchas and pastries!

Yelp
Went here for a gathering of friends on a Tuesday at 10:30 am. Parking lot was pretty full the shop was pretty busy . Long line to order but it moved very quickly. We placed our orders, luckily found a couple tables and were served within 10 minutes. The servers bring everything to your table . The coffee drinks were beautiful and delicious! I had the gluten free French toast . It was a lighter appetizer like version of the normal French toast , so it was perfect, and the fruit was delicious also ! I ordered a cafe mocha drink. It was a little under sweetened to me so I added sugar . My friends all ordered different types of breakfast toast some sweet and some were savory . Everyone in our party loved all of it . I would compare this cafe to the Parakeet Cafe in Del Mar . Just less of a bakery area but a larger menu . They also serve lunch .

Yelp
The hours are wrong on Apple Maps. Don't come at 6:30. Done it twice and both times they haven't been open.
google avatar

Candace C.

Yelp
Really good customer service when I came, lots of seating inside and outside. Parking is easy since this is at the Beacon La Costa and the center is newer. I ordered an almond croissant and cortado for here. Enjoyed them both, would come back here since it's near the Jeni's Ice cream too.

Yelp
Everything about this place deserves 5 stars. The service is excellent, the food is delicious, and the coffee is the best in town. The Lofty team seems to truly care about every detail in what they serve you and it shows both in their ingredients and food/drink presentation. Baked goods are made in house locally and the ingredients in every dish are high quality! This is a perfect spot to meet up with friends while enjoying a cup of coffee. There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating to enjoy the beautiful weather. Can't wait to come back soon!

Yelp
Granted we arrived during what seemed to be a peak time (tables full of people and line to order about 8 people deep) on a Friday morning around 10am, we decided to give them another chance and order. Order placed at 10:15ish for two coffees, and two sandwiches. 15 mins later, no tables opened up and it seeemed that no one was going to leave any time soon, so we asked to get our order to go. 20mins Ted later our food is handed to us in a bag (roughly 35 mins after ordering) and we noticed my wife's coffee order was never made, so we went back to get it. Finally when we get home, our order was missing part of the food, which was the bread for the avocado toast. Really? PS mind you this was after tipping 20%. I really wish they could offer tipping *after service is rendered* This is the second time I have had a bad experience here and will not come back. To the store manager, please feel free to reach out to me directly if you would like more candid feedback.

Trecia L.

Yelp
This was my first time here. I met up with a friend on a Friday morning to catch up. There was a line out the door to place orders. I ordered a decaf almond mocha with 1/4 of the syrup to-go in case I didn't finish it. I also ordered a The Encinitas with fluffy eggs and gluten free bread. There's a good amount of seasoning on the egg and avocado. The mocha had the right amount of sweetness for me. There's seating out front, inside, and even out back. Great little spot to catch-up with friends.

Yelp
Probably come here more than I should. I really like the food and the coffee. The staff is really helpful and kind which is great. This is also a really great location for me but I also know they have several other locations. Some reasons why I'm only giving Lofty four stars: 1) Wi-Fi isn't great I've seen other people work there so I was hoping to as well but it didn't work out too great. 2) Lofty only has one size for all their drinks I on occasion order two because one isn't enough for me . But maybe that's how they get you to spend more money I don't know. Overall currently one of my favorite places for quality and convenience. Also the croissants are super buttery and good. Big fan.
google avatar

Hannah K.

Yelp
Good coffee, pretty shop, almond croissant was mediocre. Staff are pleasant and nice. I'd go back for coffee

Josh S.

Yelp
The food was ok I had the turkey avocado croissant. Also ordered the iced matcha and Kyoto cold brew which was decent but not the best. However, the thing that really put a bad taste in my mouth was the cashier was very snobby. I think the initial impression was very unwelcoming. I went out of my way to come try this place and do some work and it just wasn't a very pleasant experience.
google avatar

Brittany K.

Yelp
ordered an iced mocha and it's so tasty! Creamy, the perfect amount of sweetness, and served in a cute mason jar. The space itself is so aesthetic and great location!
google avatar

Brittany S.

Yelp
Not ideal if you're looking for a place to get some work done. Limited seating with access to plugs. $7 for a very watery latte. Wifi connection weak. Boo. *Update* I've been informed this is a cafe, not a coffee shop. Lol. Maybe consider a brand name change? My review was intended for those looking for a place to work. Also, judging by the 3 stars on your location, perhaps not as many people as you think feel you are doing a "fine job" at making coffee.
google avatar

Sol Y.

Yelp
Came to this place for my sister's birthday and her high recommendation! Almond croissant and many choice of breakfast. Had the Americano. Definitely I will order this again or on my return. Nice outdoor patio and modern design and great staff servicing with educating more coffee beans. Be back!
google avatar

Robert T.

Yelp
I sat for one hour with a friend who was here before me when his order was finally delivered. Wow! (Oh, and it was just coffee!)
google avatar

Melanie L.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, with indoor and outdoor seating. I love meeting friends there. But I took one star off because their chai is quite spicy for me now that I developed burning mouth syndrome. The service is excellent.
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
Once awhile you find old customer service where the waiter, waitress, baristas, make you feel like you're the only one in their establishment. Alexandra has gone beyond the call of duty to help a old Viet Nam Disabled Veteran who is compromised and has trouble walking. THANK YOU Alexandra and she has a fellow employee Mikayla who is extremely friendly and accommodating to old geezer like me! AND they now have re-fills on the coffee and that's great for a Vet on a limited income. I'm SOLD on Lofty LaCosta.
google avatar

Emily M.

Yelp
The food was great, staff was very friendly, coffee was great. Unfortunately, if I'm at a coffee shop it's to work remote for a few hours and there is not a SINGLE outlet in the entire store. My laptop was running low on battery. I was told this was an intentional choice of management. So after spending $30 on food and coffee, I now can't do the work I came to do. To chose not to use outlets so people don't "linger" honestly feels so dismissive of customers and defeats the purpose of what many people come to coffee shops for. Big miss.
google avatar

David J.

Yelp
Coffee is always good and so is the service. The staff are nice and actually seem to care about the drinks they make. Food is consistently good as well and they have a lot of organic or gluten free options. I usually grab a coffee and a bite to eat here once a week and it is consistently great. The setting is also nice and I've always been able to find parking within 100 yards of the place. Once in a blue moon they forget an ingredient or something small on a to go order but overall it's my favorite coffee shop for a lot of reasons.
google avatar

Don J.

Yelp
They've done a nice job with the interior and plenty of outside seating. Coffee is pretty good and the breakfast is decent (if not a couple bucks too expensive). Typically, service is average at best. Today, Emily nailed it! She was so helpful and personable that I sought out the manager to share my compliments. This location may just be on an upward trajectory.

Randall G.

Yelp
I love Lofty Coffee and my family does as well. The drinks and food are a level above our other local shops. It has beautiful indoor and outdoor seating and great airflow throughout. One of the baristas, Liv, goes out of her way to welcome and serve us the past 2 times I have visited. Don't hesitate to try Lofty if you haven't already.
google avatar

Lanita M.

Yelp
Best black and white I've ever had!! Love this place!! So welcoming and friendly. We definitely go there when we are in town!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is my favorite stop whenever I'm in the area! The drinks and food are consistently good and the service is amazing! I love how busy they are! They deserve it! Support local!
google avatar

Yelp
This is my new haunt. Im a huge fan of the Aztec mocha (beware--it's spicy!!). Everything I've had on their menu has not disappointed. From the farro bowl to the Turkey sandwich, it's all good sized portions, fresh, and delicious. And it all feels super nutritious too. And can I just say: the PICKLES! Super tart and strongly flavored to give everything a kick. The staff is consistently friendly and helpful. They all recognize me and greet me like an old friend. I really love this place!

Michael B.

Yelp
Lofty quickly became one our favorite places to get coffee and breakfast in the San Diego area. The sausage, egg, and cheddar croissant was delicious. My fiancée and I have been to many restaurants for brunch in San Diego, but Lofty is one of the only breakfast stops on our must-visit list when we're in the area. The Cloudy with a Chance of Cold Brew drink was also excellent. While we were only in the area for a few days, we made several trips to Lofty just for this high quality coffee. We've also ordered beans several times now. Every time we've visited, the team at Lofty has taken great care of us and the lines have moved fast. The decor is also very tasteful, and we had no trouble finding a comfortable spot on the patio. We always look forward to visiting and just wish there was a location in Northern California!
google avatar

Nerissa Z.

Yelp
Service for food is very slow ordered a wrap and waited almost 20 minutes before having to get a refund so I am make it to my de appt across town. Definitely do not order food here if you don't have 20 minutes or more to wait. The staff here are really friendly, helpful and makes me appreciate their hospitality. The tea here is my favorite and the food if you have extra time is really good.
google avatar

Billy B.

Yelp
Good coffee, terrible service. But dog friendly.. Food is pretty good Convenient location to the hood.
google avatar

Laureen B.

Yelp
I met a friend at this location (La Costa) yesterday afternoon. I have a dairy allergy, so ordered a decaf latte with almond milk. It came quickly, but 15 minutes later, I was sneezing ...I should've sent it back at that point, but unfortunately didn't. I ended up with hives after I left. If you have dairy allergies, do not go here. They aren't careful about dairy contamination in the least.
google avatar

Rika C.

Yelp
Whew! Lofty Coffee is pricey. I paid $7 for an iced mocha with oat milk. Now, don't get me wrong, it was good and I don't regret it, but maybe not $7 good. Other local coffee shops nearby have bigger mochas for cheaper prices, but this mocha had better taste. I'd come back to Lofty if it was with a great friend again. My mocha latte had some really tasty cocoa notes! I could taste that it was higher quality than most other places (hence the price). I can't put my finger on it, but it had more of a rich dark cocoa flavor rather than the typical glaringly chocolate flavor that most mochas have. I appreciated the dark cocoa a lot, I just wish I could taste more of it!! Maybe I'll ask for a little bit extra next time. The baristas were awesome! Super kind and seemed like they were having fun while working. I also appreciated how open Lofty is, and you can feel the breeze from the lagoon blowing in and out of the entire cafe. A perfect place to sit and hang out for a quiet chat, like I got to. If you can afford it, give Lofty a try for yourself!
google avatar

Melinda G.

Yelp
I usually like it here but the service has gotten SO slow! Waited 20 minutes for a breakfast sandwich - ridiculous! Staff was totally clueless and just talking amongst themselves rather than being aware of customers waiting.

Sheiveh J.

Yelp
I love this place. Their service and food are excellent. Every time I come here, the employees are polite. I'm not sure I understand the complaints about waiting so long-it's not fast food and it's not a coffee shop with mobile orders! In my opinion the food and coffee are worth a 10, 15 or even 20 minute wait.
google avatar

Derek L.

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick drip coffee on a Sunday morning, service was quick and the staff were super friendly. The location is really nice as it's tucked away but still super accessible. They have the tables spread out outside and quite a bit of space still to sit. They've got everything setup pretty well to get your drink quickly and in a socially distant manner. Definitely worth a stop for a great cup of coffee and good service in Encinitas.
google avatar

Sanjeev T.

Yelp
Wow. Must say - an amazing find. Their coffees are flavorful, you have to try the cayenne pepper chocolate latte. Out of this word. Their baked goods are better than most bakeries - don't know if they're in-house or contracted but Awesome!!!
google avatar

Buzz L.

Yelp
Weak service, cold coffee and outrageous prices. Will not return to Lofty blah blah blah
google avatar

Alexandra R.

Yelp
I really didn't want to write this because the past experiences I've had with Lofty in Encinitas were great, but this experience was really bad. I spent $23 on a lukewarm, watered down london fog with zero flavor and a really pathetic looking assortment of avocado, eggs and gluten free toast that was supposed to be put together like a normal breakfast but instead they were just kind of strewn in the box, and missing an ingredient. I was also late for work because it took 34 minutes for them to make me a small drink and a box of ingredients. It's a bummer, but I won't be back.
