Chefs Graham Elliot and Felipe Armenta Review the Best State Fair of Texas Food | Eater Dallas

"Now run by her daughters, Christi Erpillo and Johanna McKee, Fernie’s Funnel Cakes is a decades‑old fairstand that leans into Americana and family story — Elliot loved the name and the backstory about their mother Fernie — and delivers a classic, simple dish done very well. The cherries are tart, the crust leans almost into cobbler territory with salted butter, and the sweet‑and‑salty balance impressed; Armenta called it a classic and appreciated its straightforwardness." - Courtney E. Smith

Google
OMG this cake is so good even after waiting over 45 min in line at silverbullet. What was left after my 9 year old and Wife saved was amazing. The ice cream was smooth and delicious, but he funnel cake itself was still crispy and delicious. The boysenberry on top was so freaking good. This is a must try when to get the Knott’s.

Google
The funnel cake was cooked very well and the toppings were what you’d expect. Nothing fantastic or something I haven’t had before. It’s a good go to if you’d like a nice treat!

Hello everyone. I highly recommend Lucy's Kit Kat Fingers Funnel Cake. This is a big portion, and can easily be shared with two or three people. Don't forget to get the napkins, and utensils. Thank you for reading my review. Please follow me on Google maps and check out the places I visit.

I finally decided to try a funnel cake at Knotts the other day. It was myself, my sister, my daughter, and my niece. We decided to get 2 to share. My daughter and I got strawberry and boysenberry and my sister and niece got apples. We decided not to get the ice cream. With our annual pass discount they came to $11.41 each. They were horrible! They were so hard that we couldn’t even cut them with the plastic knives from the counter. When we were able to get a bite it was so hard it was like chewing on rocks! We took them back and asked for new ones as it were inedible. We were given new ones. New ones were barely any better. We tried to eat them but the only part that was edible was where the sauce was.The boysenberry sauce was good as was the apple. my daughter didn’t care for the strawberries at all. After trying to make the best of a bad situation we decided this is ridiculous we paid close to $24 for an awful food and decided to ask for our money back. We went to the window and waited for a manager and were told since we didn’t have a receipt and we had eaten more than 50% of our funnel cakes We couldn’t get a refund. The cashier didn’t give us receipts. I did however show them the charge on my credit card on my smart phone however this wasn’t good enough for the manager Jazmine. This was unacceptable to me and she said she would call her supervisor. She returned to the window after a few minutes and said her supervisor said we couldn’t get a refund without a receipt. Note we did not eat 50% of the funnel cakes. I’ve said I’d like to speak to the supervisor. So than the supervisor, who she had had to “call” on the phone came to the window in a minute. Her name was Michelle . She basically said we were lying when we said we were not given receipts. We were told in a very rude way that all of our employees give receipts. I told her we were not given receipts why would I make that up. I could see were not going to get anywhere with these two people as they acted like this money was coming directly out of their pocket. So we went to guest services. We waited in line and explained our situation to the woman at the counter and she called somebody from food services. We waited about 10 minutes for her to arrive. She said she couldn’t give us a refund with out a receipt she would allow us to get food somewhere else and we thought that was a good compromise however after she couldn’t get them on the phone to authorize it she came back after about 10 minutes and said she would refund our money. I’ve never had to do this at Knotts before and the reason I pursued it was the attitude of the two management personnel at the funnel cake house was completely wrong! Not one person said I’m sorry this happened. What Jazmine told us was this is the way were taught to make them. Apparently that’s to make them where they’re so hard you can’t eat them. I will never have a funnel cake at Knott’s Berry farm again and I recommend you stay away as well. It took us about an hour to get this resolved so we did ask for line passes for one ride and we did get it. Thank you guest relations.

Google
Delicious. Nothing better. I wish they had seating with tables nearby that aren't taken by another restaurant. And it would be nice if they gave you a wet nap or something, because you always wind up with sticky goo all over your hands. But boysenberry funnel cakes are a highlight. You haven't gone to Knott's until you've had a funnel cake.

Romender J.

Google
The funnel cake and ice cream was good but the strawberries were weird tasting. They were not fresh strawberries with syrup but strange looking strawberries in looked like pureed strawberries. It is strawberry season. I guess that what I get for not getting the ever popular boysenberry. Next time boysenberry.

Google
I go way back with Knotts. I remember how amazing the funnel cake was. But the recipe has changed. It was good but not as good as when I was younger. Man, I'm sounding like my parents! Worth the try though...

Yelp
Sugar, fried dough and strawberries? I'm sold. The funnel cake was made to order and was popping hot! The whip cream melted too quickly for a nice picture, but it was still tasty! They also did have an option to add ice cream, but I chose not to since I didn't want to overload, but maybe next time if I'm sharing with another person since we barely finished this one with just two people. I just got a funnel cake with strawberries. It was as expected, it had all the sweet goodness you'd want. The funnel cake was fried up nicely, it has some crispy bits and some softer thicker bites. The powder sugar added a bit of extra sweetness along with the strawberry. The strawberries did make the funnel cake a bit soggy, but it gave it a nice sweetness to it. I'm looking forward to my next funnel cake from here. Maybe I'll get their mango tajin one next or try it with their boysenberry instead.

Yelp
The funnel cake was okay. It was my favorite with the strawberry sauce. Another establishments put the ice cream in the middle with the sauce over the ice cream. The service was fast and quick since there was a line. By the time you got to the front you better know what you are ordering. There is a few tables to sit down and at times you may share a table with a stranger. At least you can chat about the ride experience and the food.

Yelp
I love the funnel cakes at Knotts. For like $18 you get a huge serving of funnel cake, toppings, and ice cream, big enough for a party of 4. I got one for myself and could not finish even half. The service was so nice, they are so helpful and courteous. The ambiance was just an outdoor seating area, but there were plenty of seats with covered shade as well. Definitely a must try
google avatar

Yelp
Knott's truly does have the best funnel cake. Big enough to feed 2-3. Ice cream made it soooo good!!! I don't care for funnel cakes but this was so crispy and the preserves + ice cream made it heavenly. It's worth a try/the hype. The service was relatively quick and courteous. Usually just a stand to pick up and go. No seating, just find seating around the park.

Yelp
What's really an amusement park experience if you didn't eat funnel cake? Everytime I come I have to stop here and get a funnel cake. Although the funnel cake I get is always around $20 I still do the damn thing. It's Knotts so I get half boysenberry and half strawberry with whipped cream. Their funnel cakes are always fried perfectly with the right amount of powdered sugar and whipped cream. I like that their boysenberry isn't too sweet and the strawberries on it is really good. It always hits and is perfect for sharing. This spot is located right in where all their food spots is by ghost town. It's a little pricey but worth it.

Yelp
Buena Park, CA - The best funnel cake I've had was here, Knotts berry farm, which is also one of my favorite theme parks! I'd say... the funnel cake here is worth the admission price lol. There was no line and we could just walk straight up and order. Even though the price was a little steep... $17.5 for the loaded one... it's so worth it. They made the fried dough pretty thin and twisty so there's a lot of surface area aka crispness. With the loaded you get a big mountain of vanilla ice cream, strawberry or boysenberry coulis, whipped cream and powdered sugar. Sorry if I made your mouth water and you're far from here currently. I'm salivating too... It's located near supreme scream if you have a hard time finding it. There's also plenty of seating in a covered area near the funnel cake shop.

Yelp
The funnel cake was fireeee!! I definitely recommend sharing this since it's a lot of food. Adding strawberries and other toppings makes it even better!! It's a little pricey but I think it's fine since you're at an amusement park.
google avatar

Yelp
It's no secret that Knotts Berry Farm has the best funnel cakes. This is my go to spot for funnel cake. I don't typically eat this, unless I'm at Knotts Berry Farm or sometimes at the fair. But even at the fair, it's not as good. I come once a year for Knotts Scary Farm and make sure I stop for funnel cake. It's just so good! :)
google avatar

Typhanie B.

Yelp
Best funnel cakes ever! They just keep getting better with time! Let me say they are thicker, crispier and taste so good!

Isaiah R.

Yelp
Lady working at the front either has lost hope for her job or doesn't give a damn about customer service. She gave my pops one funnel cake even though he ordered two and had one ready at the counter but instead of handing us our second funnel cake she gave it to someone else and we were obligated to wait 15 minutes for another one and it came out burnt. C'mon man.
google avatar

Yelp
For my family this is a must stop on the boardwalk. The funnel cakes and churros are the best. We love a good churro and my family thinks this is the best ever, yes EVER.
google avatar

Yelp
They're ok but for the price it's getting expensive here in BP Sheez . It's hit or miss sometimes they're closed or leave early wish they were more consistent.

Yelp
pretty ass. overpriced. terrible service. gave us the wrong flavor and wouldnt change to what we requested. there was a line of people who got the wrong order. Workers dont wear gloves when touching food

Yelp
This is usually the go to spot for funnel cake but this last time I went was disappointing. It was empty when we walked in except for some people that came in right before us. We ordered a fully loaded funnel cake and an ice cream cookie sandwich. There were 5-6 employees working and after a few minutes I received the funnel cake but we were still waiting on the sandwich. Then the people that came after us started getting their food meanwhile we're still waiting. We go to ask for our sandwich and the employees are talking to each other double checking, even triple checking that we paid for it. They say they'll work on it. Keep waiting and finally get it. The ice cream sandwich was huge so it definitely is worth the money... however upon picking it up, the ice cream started coming out from the edges because it was so melted and soft. It was a melted milkshake consistency. We took it back and asked for a refund. Overall not a good experience but the funnel cake was ok.

Yelp
The Funnel cake shack have been 8n Knott's Berry Farm for many years,I can remember when I was young my parents buying funnel cake for myself and two brothers and the shack still looks the same. My wife love Knott's funnel cake she loves this funnel cake her time tasting a funnel cake when she was young.

Yelp
You know those delicious goodies that you crave and just can't have enough of no matter how many times you enjoy the scrumptiousness of a sugary treat well the Funnel Cakes @ Knott's are one of those you can never get enough of! For as long as I can remember we've always gotten the funnel cakes here and they've always been super delicious to the point of which you probably won't want to share them with your friends but the down side to that is that the grease concurs all and you could be not feeling so great afterward so make sure you give in and share with your friends! They offer a few different selections of toppings to go with the powdered sugar but I would only recommend getting the boysenberry because it's the best and your at Knott's the home of the delicious boysenberry that you won't find anywhere else! So do yourself a favor and don't be one of those strawberry people just get the boysenberry and you can thank me later for persuading you to get what's good! Don't get me wrong I love strawberry but at Knott's it's boysenberry everything! They have a few different locations to grab some of the funnel goodness the main location is right next to Timber Mountain Log Ride and Boardwalk Ball room the second is closer to the front of the park close to The Bottle House. Seriously though when you visit Knott's get a funnel cake they are super delicious with just the boysenberry and powdered sugar but if your feeling like more of a sweet thing you can add ice cream to your already piled high mountain of sugar to make it that much better in a cold creamy kinda way! With all that said I'll see you around the farm!

Yelp
Funnel cakes here are just so yummy!! Crunchy on the outside & so warm & soft on the inside =) Best to share with a friend since they're so huge. ;) I love it just with white powdered sugar & nothing else. I find that the other toppings: strawberries, etc just makes it too heavy. Great for an energy pick up when you need it. Lines can get long here, so go when there's no crowds. =)

Yelp
I remember eating this when I was a kid. I used to go to knott's and afterwards, head to the funnel cake and buy a plate of it. Before, it used to be a small outside thing, people order it outside through a small window. and I would sit outside to eat it. But now, it's inside a store, which has tables and chairs for convenience. I was craving funnel cakes and this is the place I thought of. I got the 1 topping and 1 scoop of ice cream. Its was around $12 something. I think a bit pricey. The plate is good for 2-3 people. I got the strawberry and mint and chip. My friend said it's a weird mix, but hey I like those two flavors so it isn't weird for me! It was good! hit my cravings! After eating it, the strawberry was too much. At first it wasn't sweet, since the strawberry hadn't soaked in to the funnel cake, but afterwards, when it settled in the funnel cake, it was a bit too sweet for me. Had to scrap the strawberry off. The tables are really dirty with we got there. There were tables where there was still powered sugar everywhere on the table. I know it gets messy, esp with powered sugar, but they could have cleaned it, there wasn't a lot of people there. And when It was cleaned there, was still dirty sugar stains on the table, kinda gross. No one has mentioned it, but there's 1 hour free parking for the Knott's Marketplace, when you drive in the knott's area and stay on your left lane, before the Ghost Rider bridge, you turn left for public parking for 1 hour. There's a sign, but it's kinda small, esp at late at night when we went. You can always ask the person who is controlling pedestrians and traffic where to park..that's what we did. But I think if you get food or buy stuff at Knott's Marketplace, you can get to park more hours either less than the price or get more free hours, didn't pay close attention. Max parking you pay will be $25 and can park as long as you want.

Yelp
I love amusement park funnel cakes. Knotts offers theirs plain, but I get it fully loaded. Adding the soft serve and strawberries are where it's at. The funnel cake is ~12 bucks, but 12 bucks well worth it. Eat it while it's fresh and crunchy!
google avatar

Ryan W.

Yelp
I ALWAYS have to get a funnel cake when I go to Knott's! It's always fresh and makes for a delicious snack or dessert. You have the option of topping your funnel cake with powdered sugar, powdered sugar + fruit topping or powdered sugar + fruit + ice cream! I personally like my funnel cake with just powdered sugar, because the fruit topping can make it become really soggy and hard to eat. You'll probably get the powdered sugar all over yourself, but it's definitely worth the mess! It's so delicious and makes the your experience at Knott's so much better! A MUST TRY!
google avatar

Anthony D.

Yelp
Great staff, friendly service and large portions of fresh funnel cakes. Free parking here at Knott's if you plan to eat, or shop. First hour free, second and third hours free with any purchase. Fun for everyone!
google avatar

Diana A.

Yelp
If you LOVE Funnel Cakes then you will enjoy it here. I came here with my friend after we enjoyed a night at Knott's Scary Farm. She was craving some cake so she ordered one with strawberry preserves on the side. I highly suggest doing this to keep your cake from getting soggy. These cakes are large and made for sharing. I can't imagine someone devouring one on their own #stomachache Even though I just had a couple bites me and my friend still didn't even finish one. They don't have togo containers but they do give you an extra plate to put on top.
google avatar

Mercy S.

Yelp
Great funnel cakes but I can see they don't open on time. 3 workers inside and at 1230 when they're supposed to open they're just barely getting items together. But you've been standing there for 15-20 minutes why didn't you prepare before opening or as you open on time. Ever hear if you're on time you're late?!
google avatar

Becky T.

Yelp
My first time here and didn't care for it. The ice cream tasted off. Their sign said soft serve but it tasted weird. Tasted more like yogurt. The funnel cake itself was food to me but my husband didn't like it. What really threw me off was how dirty the place was from ceiling to floor. The walls and countertops were filthy. The piping for their sprinklers are all rusted out. The ceilings look gross. Maybe they plan on closing and that's why they aren't doing any updates to it. But they should at least keep it clean.
google avatar

Johnette M.

Yelp
Let's face it. One of the reasons many of us come to Knott's is for thier famous funnel cakes. The truth is, you can try to eat funnel cakes elsewhere, but somehow they just don't compare... too greasy, to thin, or not the right toppings. The funnel cakes at Knott's are still as tasty as they were when I was a kid. I think what sets them apart from other places, is the consistency and components of the batter itself. You can count on them to have a certain amount of crunch, sweetness and soft spots in all the rights places. They are not overly greasy and are perfectly dense. I would suggest the loaded funnel cake. Topped with soft serve vanilla ice cream, powered sugar and your choice of strawberry or Knott's famous boysenberry preserves. I would also add a "little" whipped cream if you want the entire experience. Be careful though, the powered sugar gets all over the place!
google avatar

Carolyne T.

Yelp
I probably haven't been to Knott's for about 10 years now and until this day, I still remember to get the funnel cakes here. They have 3 choices of funnel cakes for you to choose from: 1) Funnel cake w/ powdered sugar - $9.59 2) Funnel cake w/ 1 topping (fruit topping - strawberry, boysenberry or apple) - $10.59 3) "Fully loaded" funnel cake (powdered sugar, fruit topping and ice cream) - $11.59 I went for the funnel cake with strawberry topping and I regretted not getting just the funnel cake with powdered sugar. The strawberry was wayyyy too sweet for me and ended up scraping off the topping. I'm glad I didn't go fully loaded. When I saw ice cream, I was convinced but it was soft serve which I'm not too much of a fan of. Make sure to have water ready to wash down all that oily goodness. These funnel cakes are made to order so it could take some time to make.
google avatar

Sean B.

Yelp
This place takes me to my childhood memories, where funnel cake was the tastiest treat in the world, probably that's the main reason for me to come to knott's! May be the best 12 bucks that I can spend on food is well spent here!
google avatar

Surbhi A.

Yelp
My fav place at knotts. The funnel Cakes!! Amazing. Tasty. For the first time today I shared the fully loaded one with my brother. The ice cream with strawberry n crispy goodness was so yummy. Great experience. A bit on the pricey side now. But what can we do. Otherwise it's great!!!

Mario P.

Yelp
Great people. I loved their funnel cake. Also I really appreciate what they do for the community and kids
google avatar

Mike Y.

Yelp
This is easily a 5 star location but it's receiving 2 today because of the poor quality of funnel cake given. This place is ever so popular because of their delicious funnel cakes. The fresh, light and fluffy funnel cake, typically topped with powdered sugar, strawberries and soft serve vanilla ice cream if you feel like getting extra fancy. However, I did not get that this past weekend. What I got was a cold, crunchy funnel cake, with powdered sugar and soggy strawberry topping. I know the potential this place has. It's just disappointing they allowed this to come out.
google avatar

Manny V.

Yelp
These funnel cakes are huge and delicious you are better off sharing it with a couple people you get the option to add icecream with strawberries or just powdered suger and chase it down with a cold cola drink get ready for a sugar high.

Trinity L.

Yelp
Its been such a long time for funnel cake!! Always make to fresh and topping is good.
google avatar

Joshua S.

Yelp
Overall, the funnel cake was just average. Nothing amazing except for the unique factor of the boisenberry sauce on the funnel cake.

Faith C.

Yelp
This place was cool as they give you enough for 2 people to share as I feel the price is definitely for 2 so the portion size is befitting The employees were all very professional and accommodating
google avatar

Sarah R.

Yelp
Was craving this and decided to get the one topping of strawberry. They put it on the side to the funnel cake wouldn't get soggy. Funnel cake on its own was yummy but would am thinking that maybe boysenberry would've been better.
google avatar

P K.

Yelp
Funnel Cake!!! What more do I have to say?! Funnel cake with the powdered sugar with some ice cream on top! MmmmM! I try to stay away from putting too much of the strawberry topping on it because it gets too sweet! Ask for a half portion and you're golden! I also ask them to make the funnel cake slightly crispy. That texture is to die for! The only knock on this place is that they close too early! But then again, if they were open until late, I would have some major health issues by now.

Yelp
We love amusement park funnel cakes, so much that were willing to drive out of our way to get one! Last night we decided to bring our son to try his first funnel cake, Disappointing is an understatement. we got here & ordered a funnel cake with a scoop of ice cream and strawberry topping & a drink. well we got our drink 10min later after my husband stood up to ask for it. there were people coming in and out and yet we still sat and waited and NEVER got our funnel cake and what was most upsetting to me was that there was a total of 6 people there standing around just hanging out & talking, we got our ice cream in a cone? 20 min later, confused because we ordered it with our funnel cake, but we just figured we would dump it on top once we got our funnel cake, no big deal. Until came a man who ordered 2 funnel cakes & got them in less that 5 min!( & to top it off he still stood there & told me he had an annual pass & he tries avoiding this place because its happened to him & they haven even forgotten his topping before) i was so upset at this point, I told them we had not received ours and it had been 30 min & that we got our ice cream separate, she gave us the refund for the cone. well finally as shes making our funnel cake and was about to bring it to us. she trips. why? because there was a group of employees huddled around talking and one was on the floor, so she tripped. all i saw her hand covered in our strawberry topping. my husband freaked and asked for a refund. thankfully we got it. We are very upset at the fact that we never got our funnel cake. & the fact that this place is so unprofessional. Its a safety hazard to not be aware of your surrounding especially, when it involves hanging out in front of the hot oil where funnel cakes are being made, and food is being handled. Big red flags in my eyes, they need to hire people who are alert and take their job seriously. not to mention we parked in the parking lot where we would of had free parking if we would of only been an hour.
google avatar

Danielle M.

Yelp
Some days I like them plain, some days I like to go all out. I normally buy my funnel cake and get in line for the log ride. I make sure everyone sees me eat it so they want one too. Bwahahaha. The kids get all messy with the toppings, but hey, what are we here for? To eat and have a good time.
google avatar

Audrey H.

Yelp
The OC Fair Funnel Cake was way, way better! This place puts way too much syrup than strawberries on the cake. Not enough powder sugar. Costed $3 more than the fair too!
google avatar

Aloulou O.

Yelp
The best best best! Soooo fluffy sooo yummy!! I get it just with just powdered sugar!!! Amazing!!!
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Quality has gone way down. The funnel cakes are thin, crispy & huge! They should be soft, doughy & thicker threads. My tradition of having one when I come here may be coming to an end :(. We'll see maybe I'll give it one more shot.
google avatar

Andrea A.

Yelp
Delicious and very affordable! Love that we can customize the toppings and get one for every member of the family. Excellent customer service and patience while we were choosing our order.

Ronnie M.

Yelp
My son and I drive 45 minutes just to get one. We've tried other places and nothing compares. They sell the funnel cakes now in the new restaurant called "Cable Car" which is located as you're walking and exiting the park so no need to buy a ticket to knotts. Parking is free for one hour or 3 hours free with any purchase in shops or restaurants. Just show your receipt of any purchase when to the parking attendant when exiting. But if you are buying a ticket to go inside the park then you can get one at the other funnel cake stand location inside knotts. Btw funnel cake stand outside at the Cable Car didn't open until 3pm so we had to wait! check hours before you make the trip. Eating one is the closest thing to heaven
