Logis de la Cadène

"In the heart of the town, this logis dating back to 1848 is one of Saint Émilion’s oldest restaurants. Picture plush, cosy dining rooms done up in the same elegant vein as the guestrooms available for overnight stays. The new chef, Thibaut Gamba, crafts delicate, subtle dishes that showcase local produce as much as possible. Some of the fruit and vegetables come from the estate’s farm, as does the honey. Splendid wine cellar, with a knockout selection of Bordeaux reds, ideal when sampled with the establishment’s superlative range of cheeses." - Michelin Inspector

I find the negative reviews laughable. This is an outstanding restaurant, and I say this as someone who regularly goes to two- and three-star restaurants in Barcelona. We entered almost casually with our kids (3 and 6) while visiting St. Emilion, well aware of how challenging this could be for the staff; they surprised us with an impromptu menu for our children, and a waiter even brought colors and paper to entertain them. We tried the Market Menu with wine pairing (we didn't want to test our kids' patience with a three-hour course), and found the quality to be, simply put, sublime. Flavors were stark and recognizable (especially the mushroom entree), the wine a perfect match. Charming location and highly professional service. A star well deserved indeed.

This hotel is okay but could be so much better. ||Room |- Does not have block-blinds, or a fridge|- The beds are quite small, double I think|- The Air-conditioning is very average. We had the temperature set as low as possible and it was still quite warm.|- Other things like cupboard doors that don’t close properly so keep swinging open and you have to secure them with a tiny key that’s really annoying and drops out so you have to search for it… dodgy door knobs etc. Our room was ‘1985’, I think they’re all a little different.||Breakfast - There is a very basic buffet. On our first day we were offered coffee and sometime later eggs from the kitchen. On the second day it may just have been an off day for the staff but having been there for 30mins we asked for eggs as it was near 10am when breakfast finishes. The waiter returned to tell us the kitchen had finished…. This was 10.01am. Not a big deal but really come on! There were 4 tables the entire time we were at breakfast so really not busy. Things that you expect are pretty basic like water being brought to the table doesn’t just happen, you have to ask for it.||In summary the staff were mainly helpful and friendly, but the hotel, well it’s fine but with some small tweaks could be quite good. And in this price range it should better.

Perfect experience from start to finish! Friendly staff, beautiful patio and local fresh ingredients! If you have a wine tasting to go to, they will let you know which menus take what amount of time so you can enjoy your meal in a relaxed manner and also make your appointment. Highly recommend!

Restaurant review. We had a wonderful experience at Logis de la Cadène. The food was absolutely delicious, we chose the Market Menu and were impressed by the balance, creativity, and flavors in every dish. Compliments to the chef for such a thoughtful and refined meal. A truly memorable dining experience!

RESTAURANT REVIEW My wife and I had the pleasure of celebrating our anniversary at Logis de la Cadène, and it was without question one of the most unforgettable dining experiences of our lives. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was intimate and elegant without ever feeling pretentious—a perfect match for the historic charm of Saint-Émilion. Each course was a masterclass in balance, creativity, and flavor. The attention to detail in both presentation and execution was second to none. You could tell the kitchen takes pride not just in the food itself, but in crafting a full sensory experience. Every bite sparked conversation and awe—exactly what you hope for in a special occasion meal. The staff were warm, knowledgeable, and genuinely invested in making our night memorable. Their wine recommendations were spot-on, and the pacing of the evening was flawless. We never felt rushed, only cared for. It’s rare to find a place that gets everything right, but Logis de la Cadène did just that. It was more than a meal—it was a celebration of food, place, and time together. We’ll carry the memory with us for years to come.

We had high expectations for this restaurant in the historic centre of St Emilion, however we were disappointed. We were given a table Outdoors, as there was a large group inside which took all the tables. There was however a second, empty dining room, but we were told we couldn’t use it. Our table was too big for 6 people, it made it difficult to all talk to each other. It was super hot under the cheap seats pastiche sheet and there were some insects. No fan was available. The table had no tablecloth and the decor was awful, it certainly did not represent fine dining. The food was very hit and miss: for example the goat cheese and balsamic vinegar dessert was awful, nobody ate it. Definitely not worth the money. There are better restaurants in the area.

We had high expectations for our dinner at Logis de la Cadène, given its Michelin star and reputation as one of the premier dining destinations in Saint-Émilion. The setting itself is lovely — a charming, historic building in the heart of the village, with a warm and elegant atmosphere that sets the stage beautifully. Unfortunately, the overall experience did not quite live up to what we had hoped for. The food was, frankly, just so-and-so. While the plating was beautiful and clearly crafted with care, the flavors and execution felt underwhelming and somewhat forgettable, especially when judged against the high standard you expect from a Michelin-starred kitchen. Nothing we tasted stood out as exceptional, and some dishes even felt flat in terms of seasoning and creativity. What really disappointed us, though, was the level of service. In a restaurant of this caliber, the service should be attentive, polished, and almost intuitive — making you feel cared for without being intrusive. Instead, it felt inconsistent and inattentive, with long waits between courses, staff who seemed rushed or distracted, and little of the warmth or finesse you expect from fine dining. This lack of attention to detail in the service really took away from the experience. On a positive note, the sommelier was excellent. He was knowledgeable, personable, and made thoughtful recommendations that complemented the meal well. His expertise and approach were a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing evening. All in all, the meal felt overpriced for what was delivered — both in terms of the food and the experience. A Michelin star carries a promise of excellence, and unfortunately, Logis de la Cadène fell short of that promise for us. With more care in the kitchen and, above all, much more attentive and polished service, it could truly shine. But as it is now, it feels more like you’re paying for the name and the setting rather than for a truly memorable dining experience.

What a fantastic meal! We visited Logis de la Cadène while in Saint-Émilion, and it truly exceeded all expectations. The food was absolutely delicious—each dish was perfectly prepared and full of flavour. The tasting menu was an amazing experience, and every bite was a treat. The wine pairings were spot on too, making the whole meal even better. The staff were friendly and made great recommendations, and the atmosphere was just right—elegant but relaxed. Definitely worth the visit if you're in the area. Highly recommend trying the soufflé for dessert—it's out of this world! Will definitely be back next time we're in St-Émilion!

Yelp
My husband and I stayed at the Logis de la Cadene hotel (*excellent*) and scheduled a dinner here for our second night in St. Emilion. This was one part of our overall honeymoon, and we had heard excellent things about the restaurant. Of all the fancy/Michelin restaurants that we visited during our trip to France, I felt like this menu was the best. We did the 7-course menu, and every item was astounding. The overall meal was filling, but not pants-busting. The service was very earnest and attentive. As we do not speak French, the servers were able to tell us what we were eating, but not go into extreme detail--just a note if that is an issue for you. We had no problem understanding what we were eating. I knocked the rating by a star for one reason alone: the pushy sommelier. I understand that being a sommelier/lead server is a big job. I also understand that sommeliers can have strong opinions on which wines we should be drinking to best accompany the meal. When we were first seated, he asked if we wanted to start with a glass of champagne. We said yes, but I joked to my husband that we might regret it. We did -- he didn't provide the cost to us (or any of the other tables around us), and it was 30 Euro PER GLASS. An addition of 60 Euro to the final bill was kind of a bummer, even though I mentally prepared for it. Is it my fault for not asking the cost? Maybe. But I think an offer like that as folks are getting seated makes it sound like it is on the house. 30 Euro/glass should be enough for the sommelier to indicate what the cost might be before it is served. Also, since we had visited a couple other expensive restaurants earlier in our trip, we had decided ahead of time not to do the wine pairings for this meal, and instead order a less expensive bottle of wine to share. The sommelier turned his nose up at all of our questions about wines under 100 Euro and at one point said to us that "it would be more fun to try wines from this section" (which was a 200 Euro price point). It made me upset that there were affordable wines in the wine book and he made us feel bad for ordering any of them. If this is a Michelin-star restaurant, then all the wines in the wine book should be good. Why else would they be stored/served onsite? So, we loved our stay at the hotel. We thought the overall staff was excellent (especially the kind woman who greeted us each morning at breakfast). But I would argue that a single employee can make or break the dining experience, and we were disappointed with our interaction with the sommelier.

Yelp
Amazing food including a superb vegetarian menu on request, excellent service and a wine list worthy of a mention. One of the best meals ever in France and should earn this restaurant two stars or more :-) excellent friendly staff and sommelier and everything done with a smile.

Yelp
Delicious and absolutely worth a stop. Call ahead to reserve a spot as many were turned away when they stopped by, hopeful to walk in. Cheese plate absolutely delicious and you can't go wrong with any of the prix fixe menus. Warning: Expect this lunch to take at least 1.5-2 hours.

Yelp
Logis de la Cadene is tucked away in the heart of one of the oldest wine regions in France. It exceeded our one michelin star expectations for a vegetarian lunch. The chef assembled an extraordinary concoction of vegetables - tomatoes cooked 3 ways, artichokes and courgettes with a light citrus dressing and to start and finish several amuse-bouche. The waitress served a perfect plate of soft cheeses from a cheese trolley that tasted as good as it looked. Our 3 hour lunch was complemented by an encyclopeadic wine list with a knowledgeable sommelier. La Cadene is the quintessential French experience and all that you imagine and more from haute cuisine.

Yelp
Warm hospitality and delicious grilled food are the hallmarks of this restaurant. They are located half way down a really steep cobblestone street in the middle of the city. They've got a really nice vine covered outdoor patio big with a number of tables for a great evening meal on a warm night. Many of their menu items are from the grill and while they aren't truly French, quite tasty and well presented. We tried the beef fillet (very good) and the grilled chicken skewer (delightful spices) and of course a half bottle of a local wine (yum!) followed by profiteroles (definitely not French but delicious) There were only two servers but they worked hard and did a good job keeping everyone supplied and happy. All in all a pleasant meal in a great setting.

Yelp
This was a really great place for lunch. It didn't seem nearly as touristy as the other restaurants in St. Emilion, though we were only there for one meal so I don't have much to compare it to. To start, they provided a lovely amuse-bouche that was some kind of cold cucumber soup. A very nice touch. I ordered the fixed price menu which came with an appetizer, an entree, and a dessert. I ordered the goat cheese salad as my appetizer. It was perfect - plenty of high quality goat cheese, a nice simple salad underneath, and a pleasant dressing. My sister ordered this as her whole meal; it's not nearly enough for a 6'3 guy like me, but she claimed she was satisfied. For my main course, I ordered the "salmon wrapped in vine leaves." The title is undoubtedly gimmicky, intended to lure in all of the tourists who are in St. Emilion only for the wine (guilty!) but it was still tasty. The sauce was mostly butter, so how can you go wrong - taste-wise, anyway? I wanted a simple dessert to save room for one of the bakeries elsewhere in the town, so I just ordered the sorbet. I was pleasantly surprised that even the sorbet was unique, quite possibly homemade. It came with two flavors, I believe they were raspberry and passionfruit, as well as some whipped cream. A great end to a great meal.

Yelp
Wow. Just Wow. IMMENSE Value for the price. Almost every dish was perfect minus the meaty ones. They truly know how to make the flavors shine and even reinvented ways to eat RADISHES. A must if you're in St. Emilion and getting the "Inspiration Menu" was worth every penny. Two hours was nice pacing as well. The service looks so prestige! I just wish their explanations could be a bit better.
