"In 4 B.C.E., the only residents of Saumur were troglodytes, or people who lived in limestone caves that formed over 90 million years ago. Experience their ancient lifestyle for yourself at La Demeure de la Vignole, a hotel that occupies a former troglodyte village on a hillside in the Loire Valley. Here, four of the 11 rooms are actually in the caves, while the other seven are housed in a 17th-century, Tuscan-style mansion overlooking the valley. Guests can also look forward to a heated pool in the caves, as well as friendly, accommodating staff who are happy to help arrange trips to nearby Fontevraud Abbey and Château de Saumur."

La Demeure de La Vignole | Best places to stay in the Loire Valley

"In a quaint troglodyte hamlet on a hillside overlooking the Loire River, this rustic-chic hotel is an easy drive from both Saumur town centre and Fontevraud Abbey, making it a wonderful base for Loire Valley sightseeing. The hotel covers the whole hamlet, so rooms – all accessed via narrow winding streets and many cut directly into the Loire’s emblematic white Tuffeau rock – are set either in a 17th-century mansion or in medieval buildings, which lends a unique feel to your stay. The quirkiest spot is the heated pool and exercise area, set entirely in a cave and the perfect place to wind down after a day outside. Couple that with the excellent prices and you’ve got yourself a brilliant stay for couples and families alike. " - Anna Brooke

We stayed at the Demeure de Vignoble in June and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room (one of the troglodyte ones) was absolutely gorgeous and comfortable. The pool, which I had for a full hour to myself, was just divine! The best I have ever swam in. The breakfast was copious and delicious. The staff was a delight, and responsive. The new owner took quite a bit of time to provide information about our next stop over in Crete (Thank you so much!!) We had a lovely stay and would highly recommend this hotel for a comfortable, well priced, out of the ordinary experience.

As French nationals living in Sweden, when we go on holiday to France we always look for an exceptional place to stay that will remain engraved in our memories. This year, visiting the Saumur region, we discovered the Logis Hôtel Demeure de la Vignole in Turquant and stayed there for three nights. A charming 12-room dwelling, combining traditional and troglodyte rooms, each with its own unique character and tastefully furnished. Not forgetting to mention the troglodyte swimming pool, which we really enjoyed and which is truly unique. The staff at the lodge are very friendly and totally dedicated to serving their guests, which went a long way to making our stay a real pleasure. The house is very pleasant and has a peaceful atmosphere, helping you to cut yourself off from the world and enjoy your holiday to the full. If you are passing through Saumur, I can only recommend the Logis Hôtel Demeure de la Vignole.

Great location for the Chateaux and Wine caves of the Loire. Warm door swimming pool reaching back into a cave from the enclosed courtyard - really unique. Large room in another cave nicely decorated but plain enough to show the true troglodyte interior. Great staff. Breakfast buffet was fresh and good variety. Only downside was no WiFi in our cave room and the wired Internet (Ethernet) didn’t work - hotel needs to install WiFi access point in the cave rooms - but nice to get offline for several days anyway.

We were doing a road trip with my girlfriend and we spent one night on this hotel. Amazing atmosphere, couldn’t believe we were sleeping inside a real cave! It wasn’t cold and the bed was really comfy. Close to the town, with a nice view of the valley. We will stay there for sure when we visit the region again!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The room was warm, uniquely designed, and very comfortable. A highlight is the year-round swimming pool located inside a cave, adding to the charm of the experience. The service was excellent, and the staff was attentive and welcoming. The only downside is the absence of an on-site restaurant. While it is possible to order pre-prepared meals that are beautifully served, this may not align with everyone’s expectations, so planning ahead is advisable. Although there are restaurants in the nearby village, they were all closed during our visit. If you’re arriving on foot, keep this in mind. The breakfast was enjoyable, but I would suggest adding some fresh vegetables, such as tomatoes, to enhance the selection.

The rooms were beautifully designed, offering a cozy yet refined atmosphere, and the troglodyte setting made our stay feel truly special. The attention to detail and cleanliness were impeccable. The staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive, ensuring we had everything we needed for a relaxing stay.

Yelp
We stayed at Residence of the Vignole for one night in early October 2018 to ride our folding bikes along the river; we liked it so much that we booked a second night! Yannick, the owner/host was charming and very helpful + he speaks great English! He toured us around the property, which is remarkable. There is a heated swimming pool built into a cave in the hillside (there are "troglo" rooms you can book that are literally caves as well!). Our room had wonderful high ceilings, with a separate sitting room, twin beds which together are "king size". Outside our room was an expansive terrace with nice views of the vineyard next door. Yannick's breakfast was really excellent, with eggs, lots of different meats, cheeses, and breads served buffet style. It was very reasonably priced for the quality of the offering, so a "10" in value as well. We plan on staying here again when we visit the Loire Valley!

Yelp
Our stay at Demeure de la Vignole was wonderful! Yannick and his wife were incredibly accommodating and provided us with great recommendations of area activities. This hotel is perfectly located outside of any major cities with plenty of walking and biking paths nearby. The hotel is a short 10 minute drive away from Saumur, a beautiful city with many attractions and restaurants.
