Charisse McGill, Beloved Owner of Lokal Artisan Foods, Has Died - Eater Philly

"Lokal Artisan Foods was founded by Charisse McGill who was known for her creative business savvy and civic engagement. The business started in 2018 and became well-known for its French Toast Bites which were often sold out at local venues like Cherry Street Pier and Spruce Street Harbor Park. In 2021, McGill made history as the first Black woman to have a signature beer in Pennsylvania with the introduction of French Toast Ale in collaboration with Yards Brewing Company. Her company also produced a spice product and coffee based on her popular French Toast Bites." - Ernest Owens

This place was so good! Came to Cherry Street pier and was lucky enough to run into this food truck. We had the French toast bites with fresh berries, whip cream, and caramel syrup. Not to mention the bacon on a stick 🤤. Bacon was delicious and French toast was so tasty and refreshing. All this for $10, I can’t wait to come back.

My boyfriend and I stopped by here while exploring the Cherry Street Pier. We ordered French toast bites with whipped cream and chocolate syrup and two coffees. The french toast bites were really good! The coffee tasted like it had a bit of cinnamon in it, which I enjoyed as well. The person that helped us was really friendly as well. We are visiting Philadelphia from Maryland so we asked for some recommendations in the area and they went above and beyond calling and texting friends to get us a list of ~10 spots to go to. I will definitely come back and visit next time I'm in Philadelphia!

Great little place to enjoy delicious, light and crisp French toast bites with a steaming hot cup of coffee. The bites were topped with whipped cream, fresh berries and a drizzle of chocolate. A side of bacon was also served with the order by very friendly staff. It's definitely worth visiting while strolling along the river.

For someone who is not a huge fan of French toast to begin with, the bites were great. My husband loves French toast and said they were awesome. Do not sleep on the cold brew! I bought a bag of grounds to take back to NY. Customer service was phenomenal!

I recently had the pleasure of savoring what can only be described as a heavenly creation: the best French toast coffee I've ever had the delight of tasting. This remarkable blend transcended the boundaries of traditional coffee flavors, captivating my senses and leaving an indelible mark on my taste buds.

Ok… the owner “Charisse” got me out of bed on a Sunday. I saw her interview on Fox News and decided I needed to try these amazing crispy French toast bites. They melt in your mouth and the bacon on a stick was a perfect match. Philly has the best “dashboard cuisine”. Later in the day I enjoyed my French toast bites Ale while watching the Eagles and I had my French toast coffee this morning. Do not pass up an opportunity to try these “delectable” melt in your mouth morsels of heaven. It’s like a party in your mouth

Lokal is my favorite reason to go to Pod Park by the Piazza in NoLibs. It’s the most decadent little French Toast bites with all the fixings. #@$! they’re SO GOOD. Sit down and have a chat with the owner too ‘cause she’s a riot!

I was vending at the pier for a flea market. There is no water fountains anywhere. I asked one of your workers for a glass of tap water for the 80yo grandmother who i work with vending antiques. You rude workers response that her "RENT WAS HIGH" You would not have any customers for your over priced garbage if it wasn't for the vendors bringing customers to your clip joint. Show the tiniest bit of humanity. I would of have tipped for the tap water.

Yelp
I was at the Christmas Village in Philly and wanted something good. The vibe was cool. There was a stage with performers singing Christmas carols. There was ice skating and lots of independent vendors. At first I wanted hot chocolate, but then I spotted French Toast Bites. I was excited to see them and immediately rushed through the crowd. I ordered the combo with the bacon on the stick. My order was ready in 15 minutes. They accepted every form of payment, which was great. I asked for the whipped cream topping but changed to the maple syrup instead. Let's just say the French toast was delicious. It remained warm all the way to the bottom and it was lightly toasted. The only thing I wanted was more maple syrup throughout the entire meal. It was only put on top to drizzle down. I would have preferred it be layered so I can taste the syrup in every bite. OK, so let's talk about the bacon on the stick. It was VERY crispy, just the way I like it! The best takeout that I have never had- way better than any diner or restaurant bacon. It stayed crispy the entire time. I'm definitely going back for a second combo. Everyone reading this should head over there. They have vegan options as well. 'Til we eat again, talk to you all later.

Yelp
Friendly service, really took attention to make the French toast bites look appealing. Tasty, crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside. Topped with powdered sugar and unlimited toppings of one's choice, I had berries (blueberries at the time) and maple syrup as my toppings. $8 for a relatively small serving but enough to satisfy. And of course, enjoying them with the stunning views is all the worth it.

Yelp
We visited Cherry St. Pier on a Sunday morning for the flea market and we went to Lokal Artisan Foods to try the French toast bites! I ordered a combo of bites with maple syrup and bacon, and my friend ordered a cold brew coffee. The French toast bites were served hot and they were delicious. They had enough maple syrup that it was tasty, but not so much that they were drowning. The bacon on a stick was absolutely delicious. It was super crispy. My only comment is that it was so crispy that it was difficult to eat off the stick, so I would prefer a different method of serving, but I would definitely order a full bouquet next time!

Yelp
Can't go wrong with French toast bites! The coffee catches you by surprise too, definitely get some. I've been here before but the trip with the Sisterhood Trolley Tour was special. The owner and staff were sweet and as soon as I mentioned my friend's birthday, they came through! Candles and vegan whipped cream ready. I know I'll be back at cherry street pier and will always have room for tasty bites.

Yelp
Lokal Artisan french toast bites are DELICIOUS! I saw them being promoted by numerous food bloggers in Philly and honestly thought they were just being hyped by people who may have had to boast about them as part of a partnership. But, the reality matched the hype!!! These are so so yummy and accessible on the go near Christopher Columbus Boulevard. I got mine from Cherry Street Pier after an outdoor yoga class and it was the perfect quick breakfast. They are a little messy with the toppings so I wouldn't recommend eating while walking, stop at a table or bench to enjoy! The bacon strips are another yummy side to go with and complete the breakfast.

Yelp
Such an amazing place! The french toast bites are so good, and their coffee blend is incredible! Pumpkin spice has nothing on this. Plus the owner Charisse is so nice and the staff are really friendly! Definitely worth checking out.
