My bf and I were lured inside Lokum after spotting the glamorous decor and colorful stacks of nontraditional Turkish delights on display. The employees were friendly and forthcoming with recommendations and free samples. My only regret was not trying the halva, due to its display location in the back of the store.
COFFEE ORDERED
Turkish coffee was $5.50 for 4oz of original and $6.50 for the flavored varieties. You're supposed to sip on the coffee, then the water, and leave the fine sediment as it settles at the bottom. The price seemed steep considering half of the teacup was full of coffee sediment. However, one free piece of traditional Turkish delight was included in the cost. We enjoyed the candy green apple flavor. It had a good chew.
After doing some research online, I learned that Turkish coffee is unfiltered. Thus, it contains more caffeine and might be unhealthy if it is not consumed in moderation. Just FYI.
- Traditional. My bf ordered this one without sugar. It had a stronger coffee taste than the flavored one, and it was not bitter.
- Cardamom. I ordered this with light sugar. I was surprised to find that the cardamom flavor was lighter than I preferred. I still enjoyed it, but I don't think the extra dollar was worth it.
BAKLAVA ORDERED
- Traditional Pistachio Baklava ($3). Baklava has always been soggy and tooth-achingly sweet for me. Lokum's version was the best I've had so far: flaky, chewy, moist, nutty, and sweet, but not unbearably sweet.
TURKISH DELIGHT ORDERED
Nontraditional Turkish Delight was priced at $33.99/lb. An employee used scissors to cut pieces from each log to my desired size before they weighed the box. My bf and I went wild and spent like $17 on 6 pieces to eat in one sitting. That was basically our lunch, since one slice was as large as 2-3 traditional cubes of Turkish delight! The texture was more firm, chewy, and sticky like a taffy compared to the traditional cubed version. Each log was packed with ingredients such as flowers, nuts, berries, nougats, and cremes. Most items had 2-3 combinations of distinct flavors that were somehow mild yet balanced. Furthermore, the quality of ingredients was very good.
- "Galaxy" Blackberry, Almond & Almond Cream. There were pieces of almond suspended within the cream.
- Rose Petal Covered, Pomegranate & Pistachio. Even though it was covered in dried rose petals, the rose flavor was subtle and paired well with the pomegranate. A generous coating of pistachios provided crunch.
- Barberry Tiramisu. The chewy dried barberry tasted similar to cranberry. It added a fruity and tart dimension to the chocolatey filling.
- Red Velvet. I don't think it tasted much like the cake, but it was good.
- Chocolate Hazelnut. I didn't get much coconut, but you can't really go wrong with chocolate creme filling and hazelnuts.
I also sampled the Brownie flavor, which was covered in M&Ms. It tasted just like brownies in Turkish Delight form. I didn't catch the last item my bf ordered because he wolfed it down so fast while I was taking pictures!
