The 22 Best Breakfast Spots in Houston

"For a family-friendly breakfast that’s served all day, head to this Heights-area diner. Omelets and pancakes are Lola’s strong suit, but the challah French toast is where this diner truly shines. Served with fresh fruit and your choice of maple bacon or sausage, this thick, cream custard-soaked dish is a surefire way to start your morning off right. Opting for something more health-conscious? The protein plate features grilled chicken breast, egg whites, and fresh fruit." - Brittany Britto Garley, Sean Hekmat

"This reliable neighborhood diner has a vast menu of sandwiches, salads, pastas, and it serves breakfast all day. Spring for a Carolina pulled pork sandwich or a stack of pancakes topped with fruit and candied pecans. Google
Definitely a local spot but also it’s definitely worth a trip no matter what side of Houston you live in. The restaurant itself has a very unique atmosphere. The food was delicious and the prices were extremely reasonable for today’s standards. The only thing is you have to order at the counter first and then get your own silverware, sugar and cream for your coffee. The lead up to that is that they ask for a tip after you place your order and get your own utensils. Other than that, it was spectacular.

Hadn’t been to Lola before, but gave it a try. Amazing food and service. Had the “Day After Thanksgiving Sandwhich” it was fantastic. Turkey - Dressing - Cranberry and a side of Brown Gravy - with some hand cut fries. It was great. Will be back.

Google
Some of the best breakfast I’ve had in a while. You can definitely taste the love and care in every bite. Great atmosphere inside seating and outside seating. Excellent experience, new weekend breakfast staple added! Make sure you add a side of grits!!

Google
The food here was delicious and the prices were reasonable. The lady who brought the food to our table was great and happy when greeting us. The only thing was the cashier guy he seemed upset being at work and seemed agitated taking our order. But overall, it is a good place to dine out at.

Briana Donis

Google
Tradition breakfast with a twist or yummy goodness. I don’t think you can go wrong with anything you order here. We had the Chicken and Fruit Waffles and the So-Cal omelette. It was sooo good. Perfect serving, flavor, and temperature. Service was so fast too! The atmosphere is veryyyy busy and chatty but it’s a diner in a high trafficked area so what can you expect!

Ami S

Google
The food was okay. I got French toast with berry compote according to the description but instead I got French toast with fruit sprinkled on top. And my husband got chicken fried steak but he ended up getting his about 15 to 20 minutes before I got my food. So his food was starting to get cold by the time I got mine. The atmosphere is good and the place looks neat and modern.

Google
Food was So delicious and plentiful. We purchased one chicken pasta with spinach and the chicken w/waffles and bacon. Pasta wS tasty but the chicken and waffles were DELICIOUS!!! Awesome customer service! Restaurant was very clean. Bathroom check......toilet seat was ghastly and needs to be replaced!!

Robert Johnson

Google
A friend invited me here for the first time and I didn’t have any expectations. But whilst in line to order I started noticing most people getting the chicken and waffles so I thought why not, I will too. Omg - so good! Like…a revelation! I asked for the toppings on the side but next time I’d just get it all on top like it’s meant to be. The serving of fried chicken is substantial. I took half of it home and it was still amazing reheated. I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. Definitely a gem 💎

Yelp
I'm really happy I decided to stop here for breakfast during a long layover at IAH. The fried chicken was really good. I didn't expect boneless white meat chicken could taste this good. The breading was crisp and the was very well seasoned.

Yelp
We read the reviews and wanted to give this place a try. I wish I had a better report, my friends. The service was counter and I have no problem with that. You order, get a number and all your own drinks, utensils and etc. it was a much older establishment. It definitely needed some work on the interior, for sure. It's one of those love the concept of a diner but the food to me was mediocre. Of course, it's just my take on it and y'all may want to give it a try if you are in the area. They also have all day breakfast.

Yelp
Great local brunch place in the heights, very limited parking on weekends. BYOB Inexpensive but still great flavor, great service. My go to item is the chicken and waffles, always hits the spot. No complaints.

Broderick G.

Yelp
Been coming here for about 20 years and this place has forever been a heights classic. Before all the development in the area there would be a line out the door on the weekends. Good breakfast, good lunch and dinner.
google avatar

Jim B.

Yelp
I guess it's supposed to be the cool breakfast place in the Heights but it just did not do it for me. Loud, with a lot of banging around and hard floors Coffee , self serve was out and took a while to refill They forgot to bring the fruit with our breakfasts (in lieu of meet) , it came after we asked. Salt shaker was broken (glass) on my table so i ended up spilling salt on my food (no offer to replace when they collected the broken shaker) Food, okay, but there are better breakfast options in Houston.
google avatar

Erica M.

Yelp
I'll start by saying the service was very good. You come in, order your food. They give you a number and you sit at the table and wait for them to bring it to you. I got the French toast and I was unfortunately disgusted. It was a bit dry and just tasted like bread with a hint of vanilla. I ate 2 of my squares and threw out the rest. The eggs were good, also the grits were PERFECT. The bacon very salty (so cheap bacon). My cousin got pancakes they are very thin but they were good. The corn beef hash is really potatoes with lots of onions and corn beef the size of bacon bits. Idk if I would return. The vibe is laid back. Good for families.

Syl B.

Yelp
Amazing restaurant!! A must for anyone living in the Heights. I'll be coming back for the After Thanksgiving Sandwich. Yum! Gotta have it with sweet potato fries. Service is spectacular. Can you tell inkove this place? Parking super easy and plenty of it.

Latoya T.

Yelp
Quality food, fair prices, good customer service and they NOW offer mimosas which is a plus for an over worked mother/wife. It so hard to find places that are affordable and quality. If you're in the area you should stop in.
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is among my favorite brunch restaurants/diners in Houston Heights. Plenty of seating is indoors, and it has an outdoor patio area. Parking for this place can be hectic, and you may have to go around the streets to find street parking since this area can often be busy. I like coming here with friends if we want a heart-healthy American brunch! I like ordering a chicken fried steak with a side of plane waffles and orange juice.
google avatar

Courtney K.

Yelp
To me, Lola was just ok... however the chicken fried chicken was apparently bomb. I got the French toast and honestly it was way too dry. Even with syrup, it just tasted like dry eggy bread. We tried the orange juice as well which was good but $5 was super pricey. Lots of brunch places to pick in the area so I'm not sure if I would return on my own but would definitely go if invited.
google avatar

Pamela Z.

Yelp
This place is just such a classic solid diner option that I'm so happy to have in my neighborhood. Lola has been in the neighborhood for as long as I can remember and offers fast, tasty and affordable food. Atmosphere is unassuming and casual; you could walk in for breakfast in your pajamas and I don't think anyone would give a second look. On Wednesday afternoon/evening kids eat for free. We have never actually been for this time period, so not sure if it's crowded or not, but I love that they are giving back to the community in ways such as this.
google avatar

Alexis P.

Yelp
Lola is a nice neighborhood diner in the old style with good customer service and delicious food with affordable prices! If you thought the era of diners died... please visit Lola and enjoy remembering the old good times!
google avatar

Steven J.

Yelp
I love the food here and the prices are FANTASTIC. But I wish everyone was as attentive as this one particular waitress Her name is KRISTA and she makes my stay so enjoyable there . The wifi is fast one thing that the Mngmt should concentrate on is the woman's bathroom , it is a horror story . I'm scared to go in the men's if I ever have to. My pronouns are she/Her .
google avatar

Yelp
Not a great experience for me but my wife enjoyed her food so three stars. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros with eggs over easy - complete disaster. Eggs were scrambled. I can live with that but still a fumble. The house ranchero sauce was little more than a warmed Pace picante sauce. The refried beans had grated parmesan cheese on top. In a twist my wife's parmesan grits has cheddar cheese on top. Her spinach omelette did look good, but not enough for me to return.
google avatar

Robert C.

Yelp
Not a bad place for a small bite. Got the breakfast protein plate but I wish I would have tried some other options. I'll have to go back again.

David S.

Yelp
The signs says they open for breakfast AT 7:00 am. We were at the door at 6:59, knocked on the window and were ignored by the one person we saw inside. We left and went to the Yale Bar and Diner up the street. Old school, a throw back to a different era. This is the second time this has happened at Lola. There won't be a third.

Sandy G.

Yelp
First time here. Order at counter. We came Sunday morning. I ordered the chicken friend steak. It was burnt on corners and dry. Grits were so salty and were definitely not fresh ( lumpy) with cheddar on top. Price was ridiculous for low quality and quantity. What made it worst was the large dead roach by front door under table.
google avatar

David G.

Yelp
Lola is a classic with breakfast served all day for those like to sleep in! Came in on a Sunday around 11am and we ordered quite a few of options here. Had the hash and eggs with chicken fried chicken which was scrumptious! The French toast and pancakes are great and absorb the syrup enhancing that sweet tooth experience. I'd recommend this place for breakfast since it's served all day. Cons The line is always long morning half of the day and you must order up front at the counter and retrieve your own drinks and utensils from the counter including condiments.
google avatar

Cynthia V.

Yelp
Came here for breakfast with a friend on a Thursday morning around 9am (it was a holiday week between Xmas and NYE). Parking was easy, but by around 9:45am the place was quite busy and parking was full. The situation: order at the counter then find a table. Like I mentioned, it wasn't too busy so ordering was easy with the very friendly attendant. I opted for the Breakfast Lola and a coffee - eggs your way, bacon or sausage, potatoes or grits, and a bread of your choice between toast or pancake. A hearty breakfast to be sure! I was unable to finish it as the portion was quite generous. There is a self-serve drink station so we could have as much coffee refills as we wanted. All in all, it was a good option for a chill breakfast out in the area!
google avatar

Zara T.

Yelp
Food was good, service was slow. Everyone was sweet, the main issue is the set up - you order your food at the counter and then they'll bring it out to you - but the counter is tucked in the back. Additionally they were having issues with the card readers (not their fault!!!!) but the line was very long and the traffic made it somewhat difficult. Food came out in a reasonable amount of time, and everything was enjoyable once we got moving. I'd definitely try it again, likely a great spot during non-peak hours
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Was pleasantly surprised I've never herd of Lola's as I'm always on the hunt for a delicious breakfast. This place gives you that diner feel. My friend and I sat at the counter to get the full diner experience haha we absolutely loved it. The service was fast and seating and parking was great. I dread coming to the area because of lack of parking but Lola's shopping center has a good sized parking lot. This is a walk up and order type spot so I suggest you take a look at the menu before going in if you have anxiety like me and hate rushing to a decision. Now to the food, the best part. Everything was made to order and man it was goood! The eggs were perfect along with the potatoes and chicken fried chicken. My friend was raving about her veggie omelette. I can't get over the potatoes! So soft/crispy and perfect seasoned. The portions are also quite large so bring a big appetite!
google avatar

Yelp
Fodd is great! We had the Pecorino Chicken with sun-dried tomatoes and loved it. Location is easy to access. The service is wonderful.
google avatar

Patric A.

Yelp
Food was great, portions are plenty large. My son had a craving for chicken and waffles... Lola's delivered. Staff was nice and service wasn't too long of a wait. Roughly 15-20 minutes wait. (Not peak hour) roughly 3pm on a Sunday. Prices are reasonable. $15 average per plate before drinks.

Fer C.

Yelp
Mediocre service, decent food, dirty establishment Overrated in my opinion. Not impressed

Yelp
My daughter and her friends had lunch today at Lola's. I'm really disappointed with how they were treated. The server interrogated them by asking where they lived, where their parents were, etc. The server said that "someone in a white van could come by and grab one of them and kidnap them." She continued with saying how dangerous it is to walk in our neighborhood. Additionally, all of the orders were messed up. My daughter can't have dairy, and all of the girls ordered burgers with no cheese. But, cheese came on all burgers. The girls pointed this out and instead of making fresh burgers, Lola's just scraped off the cheese and left melted cheese on each patty. Needless to say the experience was completely unprofessional and disrespectful to paying patrons. My daughter and her friends never want to go back, but have already made plans to meet up at another neighborhood spot!

Kate H.

Yelp
My husband loves diners so he wanted to try this place and I was curious too having passed by it for many years. First I'll say the staff was friendly and helpful and the food was okay, nothing special. The thing that threw me was the concept. Walking in to order with two huge digital screens really took away from the diner concept I was expecting. Self serve is not really a problem for me but it was just odd the execution. The other oddity was the run down looking and feeling nature of the outdoor patio. The metal tables really needed a coat of paint or something. Leaves, trash and food stains were apparent on the concrete. It was a lovely cool day outside, but the patio felt stark and even unsanitary. My husband had the chicken Alfredo, which he said was okay. Portions were generous. I had looked for an enticing breakfast option, but didn't really see it, so I had the burger and fries. It was okay, but not anything I would go back for. The burger was dressed nicely and the bun was great, but the patty tasted and felt like cheap Cisco prefab. Fries were a weird drab brown color and soggy. I thought this was a localish establishment and really wanted to like it, but I think there are much better options for this style of dining in the heights.

Yelp
A super attractive diner that looks and feels like it could have been a great throw back experience. But getting inside it really feels on the decline. It is actually perplexing that it hasn't already shut down. The place looks like ownership isn't keeping up maintenance and it is surprising noisy. I assume the noise is from the grills air handling system. The staff has acclimated to the noise and did not even notice it when I asked about it. I was so bad I had to sit as far from it as I could manage next to the damaged booth. The dinner food was very middle of the road we had three entrees and they were all very boring tasting. Not bad, just not exciting enough to every want to spend money on them again. The best part of the meal was Coconut Cream Pie. Surprisingly the best I have had in a few years. Service was very friendly but not particularly good. Had long waits for refills and being checked on. There was almost no on else there so I'm not sure what it would be like if there were actually a full house. So we won't be back unless something significantly changes with this location

Yelp
I have never been here before... it's a cute little spot on Yale street. You can sit outside or inside. Now I get to the register and you can tell the cashier is irritated/annoyed so she takes our order and she is just distracted not really being friendly or listening. However after she placed the order they will give you a number and you seat yourself. It was clean but it could be better just a few missed spots here and there. Few minutes go by and here comes the first order. The food runner who brought us our food was amazing and sweet and of course the order was wrong cause the cashier did not listen. Thankfully she was nice and understanding. Then both orders come back out and the food is good. This place has its own charm and unique style to it. Honestly if you want a quick bite to eat this is the place. 1-10. 7 * the "customer service" vibe/friendly atmosphere is needed maybe it was just not a good day.

Yelp
A classic brunch place in the heights! Lots of food to fuel you and your friends after a 5k. The French toasts looked really good but I thought they were going to be loaded with fruit, at least according to the pictures, but that wasn't the case. The veggie omelet I got was massive and also came with a pancake, which was not what I was expecting, so that was a pleasant surprise. The eggs was a little tough and over cooked and I wasn't raving about it. The sausages were good, and were real sausages, not the hotel links. The tables in the middle are bolted down so you can't move them together for a larger group. Overall, it gets the job done and it's better than your chain breakfast restaurant. (Altho the Denny's Heart Healthy 9 Grain Panacake is pretty fire).
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
Solid breakfast and lunch fare at reasonable prices. Service is always friendly, food arrives quickly to the table. Lola has survived in The Heights for many years where many places open and close in the blink of an eye. Well worth repeated visits... shout out to Christa for making our Book Club feel so welcome!
google avatar

Peggy M.

Yelp
Our book group had brunch and an informal discussion here. The food was delicious with generous portions. The service was excellent. We all had breakfast items, and every one of them was a winner! I can't wait to come back with my family

William K.

Yelp
The pancakes are to die for. Service is also very good here. Excellent breakfast spot that's not a chain.
google avatar

Neema M.

Yelp
I've been to this place several times and would recommend. Ambiance Super chill. Order at counter and seat yourself. The parking is limited and can be a cluster with ppl coming and going. Service I would consider this relatively passive. Not super friendly but not rude either. They bring the food to your table, but other than that, it's pretty self-service. Food This is why I recommend and come back. The food is good!! I had an onellete the last time I went and it was really good. My husband had chicken and waffles and he really enjoyed it. It tastes very fresh. We got the coconut pie and it was extremely sweet - would not get again or recommend. Stick with the food items and no dessert. I also wish they had lattes!!
google avatar

Bridget R.

Yelp
Good food, OK parking, sub par seating & service. If you don't know the place it is not very "new guest friendly". No signs where you should know grab a seat and go to the bar to the order. Good options for a self serve restaurant in terms of plates, drinks, condiments, etc, but they did not make sure the utensils were stocked. The seats are mixed and aged, including a non-use booth for safety purposes. Wrap and fries where good, but soup was OK (seems like a Texas thing, so not judging restaurant)
google avatar

Sylvia L.

Yelp
Their breakfasts are lofty and good! We were stuffed when we left, had to take most of it to go.

Andrew P.

Yelp
You might as well show up tipsy if you're going for brunch because they don't have drinks. And if you don't drink bring your own OJ or soda. Their fountain is outdated, no options. The food was good, mashed potatoes were seasoned, green beans cold of been softer, and the chicken was good but could have been better. Seemed too chewy, overly the experience wasn't bad. Probably wouldn't go back on my own.
google avatar

Armando M.

Yelp
I've been here previously and have had a great experience. So I was disappointed that this visit was a complete 180°. We went in before noon on a Tuesday and it wasn't too busy which was nice. That was the best part of the visit. We ordered the ham and three egg omelette, pancakes w/bacon, side of potatoes, and some coffee. 1st Issue: They were all out of coffee. They had a coffee container sitting in the coffee maker but never set it to go. I had to wait over 20 minutes before I could get coffee. 2nd Issue: They brought out the omelet plate and said the pancakes were coming right up. After waiting several minutes we asked about the pancakes and the lady behind the counter peered behind her to check the grill and said they were already being made. Several more minutes passed by and nothing. Another waitress passes by and said it would be another few minutes. I asked if it was normal for them to bring a tables order separately and all she did was shrug her shoulders and walked away. They were obviously getting a HUGE takeout order ready because I could see a waitress get two large paper bags ready and was filling them w/takeout containers. After waiting for over 20 minutes for my pancakes they finally brought them out. My partner didn't begin to eat his food until they brought my order out so you know it was cold. 3rd Issue: They forgot my side of potatoes. I hadn't realized they had forgot them until I had already started to eat my pancakes. When they finally brought me my potatoes they were cold, hard, and flavorless (like their staff and service). 4th Issue: Nobody apologized!? I'm really disappointed at how terrible the service was from beginning to end. It's sad because their food was good. I'll probably never go again.

Yelp
Went to Lola's after a Job Interview. Was craving Chicken and Waffles. Was not convinced by the lines at most restaurants that do Chicken and Waffles! This Jewel showed up near the heights area not far from downtown! Delicious FOOD & GREAT Customer Service!
google avatar

Patrick N.

Yelp
Great food, great service! I always prefer restaurants where you go to the cashier to order your food and immediately pay; much more efficient than having wait staff. I ordered the chicken fried steak, and my wife ordered a sandwich. Both were delicious! My meal took a little longer than usual to be ready, and the cashier gave me a complimentary slice of apple pie for my troubles. And the apple pie was one of the best I've ever had!
google avatar

Yelp
I'm always searching for new brunch places to try, and Lola was a welcome change to my usual medical center area routine. A couple friends and I stopped by on a weekend morning in April hoping to satisfy our brunch craving. Upon arriving, we beat the Houston heat by waiting indoors in a long line - this is a pretty popular spot! Two of us opted for the Chicken and Fruit Waffles, while our other friend ordered the Breakfast Lola. We sat down at one of their patio tables, playing with our friends dog while we waited for our food (pro tip- their patio is dog-friendly!) We were excited to chow down as our food arrived, after a round of Yelp-worthy pictures. The chicken was deliciously crispy and I enjoyed the waffle as well. There was a good deal of food, I was able to take home around half of my meal after stuffing myself! My friend enjoyed her Breakfast Lola (though she mentioned she wants to order the chicken and waffles on her next visit). I would be open to trying Lola again if I'm near the area. This is a solid option for any brunch-lovers out there, with pretty reasonable prices. Check it out!

Yelp
I haven't been back here in a couple of years! So glad to see new items on the menu. Today, I ordered the seared salmon. Omg! It's to die for. Seared salmon sits atop some wild grain rice sitting in an absolutely tasty red Thai curry coconut sauce. I'll definitely be back to try other items

Yelp
Went for Sunday brunch. The line was long, but the wait wasn't too bad. Spent about 15-20 waiting in line to order. The food was good. Nothing exceptional, but it didn't disappoint. I ordered the huevos rancheros with a side of banana pancakes. The atmosphere was very much lacking. The inside of the building seems to be in rough shape as well as the outside tables. I would recommend sitting outside though if the weather is nice. Service was awful. My main dish came out in about 15 minutes which isn't bad during a rush. However, they got the order wrong (potatoes instead of subbing grits) and they forgot my pancakes. I asked two different people to check on it and waited an hour before they finally came. I want to go back there because the food was good at a low price, but I'd be hard-pressed to do so due to the atrocious service
google avatar

Jeannie W.

Yelp
Great atmosphere, indoor and outdoor seating. Order and pay before you sit down. Lots of good choices on the menu. Cornbeef hash side was bomb. Coconut cream pie was meh, chicken salad sandwich didn't have much taste. Kid approved of the pancake! Chicken fried steak was decent. Staff was friendly, service was good. I would come back to try other dishes.
google avatar

C F.

Yelp
A delicious Sunday brunch, for about $10 bucks, is a rarity in Houston these days. The service was prompt and polite, the whole place was clean and well-maintained. Give it a try!
google avatar

Yelp
OMG ! I love this place for brunch. Typical Heights crowd, and I LOVE it
google avatar

Isabel G.

Yelp
Food was very good, a bit overpriced tho paid $10 dollars for orange juice, also their menu cards aren't updated payed 16 for a meal that was actually 12.50 on card
google avatar

Marilyn B.

Yelp
Teriyaki chicken sandwich was good not great. The sauce was more bbq than teriyaki. Chicken was tender and bun very fresh. Fries were very good. Took a very long time to get our food. They do a lot of to go business. Have been here several times and never had a bad meal. Nost everything on the menu is good.

Yelp
Seems like this place may have once been a great place to go for American diner food, based on many of the older reviews. I figured I'd try on weekday for lunch since I live a stones throw down Yale. A lot of what I experienced mirrors some of the previous reviews. Cons: - they live to the "greasy spoon" stereotype quite literally. Everything felt dirty, from the large holes in their booth seats, to rusty chairs, and cutlery with dried cheese and food bits. - food comes at random. My single pancake came right away and eagerly sat there getting cold while I awaited my omelet and potatoes. I suppose I could have dug into my pancake while I waited, but I guess my partner could have also had something to also dine on at the same time. Makes for an awkward dining experience. - low on supplies. No ketchup. Soda machine was broken. Maybe Covid related, but nonetheless as a business owner I'd be damn sure to have full ketchup bottles for a place that serves breakfast potatoes and hashes. Pros: - staff was friendly - not expensive - in the neighborhood - food is good when hot (as long as your's isn't the plate getting cold while your friends are waiting for their meals) Overall, decent place to eat but has a lot of work to do in terms of cleanliness and organization.

Yelp
Came by for Saturday brunch. Parking was slightly difficult, there are only so many spaced in the lot in front of the store and no street parking very closeby. Ordering is in the inside and you order at the counter. Waiters bring the food to you and everything else is self service. Food was honestly alright but pretty average for breakfast/brunch. Nothing extraordinary but not bad either.
