"the HEART of the barrio" ... W🤯W! Definitely feels like home. While gentrification of the hood no longer makes this the "barrio", this spot just outside of Carlsbad Village HITS THE SPOT! Such rich history and embedded in the community, this is THE spot to hit if your craving authentic menudo, chili relleno burritos, huevos rancheros and all the typical meals you might find in a Mexican household (back in the day). This is an awesome neighborhood joint that will satisfy a craving for classic Mexican dishes. Simple & classic. Support the locals, keep this place alive, it has historical context.

I returned here as it was a memory from my childhood. I never tried the food there but as a kid I remember meeting one of the Sisters who ran the place and they were always so sweet. Before I would even met them they already knew me through my mother. But it's been awhile and I decided to stop by. The place has changed a lot, but aside from its new coat of paint and new layout, it still seems very familiar and homey. I think it's still a place for the locals as someone always knew someone by name here. It's definely a nice neighborly place even if the neighborhood has gone some serious development. However, the food was not my favorite. I ordered a Carne asada Taco, and a chicken Enchilada. The food was promptly made and huge in portioning. As I looked around I regretted not getting the burrito instead as they looked massive. The issue was how salty the food was. I probably shouldn't have eaten it but I did anyway. Each bite was much harder to get into. The Enchilada started off much better but the mole sauce alone got very salty. I could tell it was freshly made, but their recipe could use a change up. As I remember before, they still had everything to offer as a convenience store now including tempting Merch. Although I didn't like the food I enjoyed the place very much and it's nice to see how they are woven into the community. Chill place!

Google
Saw some good reviews so I came in to try the been burrito. Later we will go back for the shredded beef tacos. The place was cosy and the staff was welcoming.

Google
Came highly recommended. Left highly 😞 disappointed. Canned red enchilada sauce and canned beans or if they're homemade, they need a lot of work. At least buy red enchilada sauce that isn't bitter. The "Rico Taco" looks like a Taco Bell crunchy taco so I don't know why it's listed as a house special (see photo). The salsa fresca is made with unripe tomatoes and is dry. The green salsa looks like it has food coloring (see photo-that color green does not exist in nature) At least the guac is fresh! They didn't have tamales ready and they didn't have chile rellenos. I'd give them 2 stars but I never give a rating that low so I will give them 3. Get back to homemade, guey!!

I've gone to lolas Since high school I used to know one of the old owners I believe she passed away She was a great woman She knew me by my first name very nice woman I went to Lola's Recently they were supposed to make my food at 5 30pm they make it to early food was cold when I picked it up I went to the staff told them about it Instead of them making new food that was warm They put The cold food into a different bag. Very poor customer service.

Google
Carne asada burrito was ok. The pico de gallo cost $1 extra (it’s too dry without it) so this burrito cost about $9.50 and overall, it wasn’t that big. You have to bag up your own salsa, but the smoked pepper one was quite delicious but the green one was too watery. The rice was nice and Smokey, and the beans were good. The staff weren’t friendly at all (except the cooks) and nobody helped me when I entered which is the exact opposite from what I’d expect walking in. Especially when one of those two people is Lolita herself, and the place wasn’t busy. Outside there is nice places to sit that are painted quite lovely.

Google
Doesn't get any better. Anything you order here is delicious. Beef enchiladas, tamales, carne asada burrito, Lola's scramble, bean and cheese burrito. I'm going to try something different next time though, gotta try it all!

Google
I love Lola's!! One of my favorites is their chilaquiles plate, and you can add a meat. I like to add machaca, so tasty! Everything else is amazing too, super fresh and tasty. You can feel the love.

Yelp
The burrito was spectacular, and the SERVICE was above and beyond..... BEST TACO SPOT PERIOD !!!! Can't wait to go back . A hidden local gem in CBAD

Yelp
I call in my order... bean, rice and cheese burrito's... ... Regular size burritos are a good size..... Small is small... just right for kids... Staff is friendly... We like to buy local-shop tee-shirts.... But they had No inventory

Yelp
Stopped by here for some bean and cheese burritos. They were pretty good and reasonable priced ($7.5). The staff is super friendly and they have tasty sauces! They have a few indoor and outdoor tables. We had to park on the street, but didn't struggle to find a spot. Apparently this spot is also a favorite of the legendary snowboarder, Shaun White. Wasn't able to verify that info via a reputable source, but that is the word around town. Anyway, I'm definitely coming back!

Yelp
LOVE this Off the Beaten Path family owned Hole in the Wall in the Barrio in Carlsbad Village. They are known for their great burritos. Very local spot. Heavy "To Go" business. Quite busy during lunch. Might have to wait in line. Small casual indoor dining & a few tables outside with umbrellas. We had the Carnitas quesadilla & it was muy buenoHadn't been to Lola's in awhile but happy to rediscover & will become a more frequent diner Excellent choice for authentic Mexican food Closed Sundays & Mondays. P.S. They have El Nopalito chips for sale if you need a bag or 2!!!

Yelp
No bathroom or even a sink to wash your hands on the premises. I'm not joking. They send you across the street to the porta-potty they've perched there. They cheerfully informed me---"It's very clean! We clean it once a week!" Oh lord. Is she for real? I returned to my table to find my combination meal sitting there waiting for me. Unfortunately crawling with two big fat houseflies. Someone (presumably the woman who had sent me across the street to their outhouse) had simply dropped my meal off at my empty table. I can't blame the flies for seizing their chance at a halfway decent meal. I was repulsed but scooped off the area they had been feasting on. I've attached a photo of the food I had to scrap away. Cheerful woman: "This might help a little". She brought a twirling fly device to the table. Too bad she didn't bother to provide their fly device before leaving my meal out for the flies. Unattended. The meal itself was barely heated. If I were to estimate its temperature I say the food was about 80 degrees. Just about lukewarm. Way too sloppy here. I worked in restaurants for years. With this many flies buzzing the meals at the tables---doors left wide open all day long and the kitchen wide open I guarantee you their fly problem is all over inside their kitchen. Service like theirs makes me regret having tipped at the counter. Yuck

Yelp
Amazing food & the friendliest people in town; just a delightful local place that we're so lucky to have. I won't get Mexican food from anywhere else. Don't miss the tamales!

Yelp
I got the breakfast burrito with bacon, eggs, beans, add salsa Fresca. No cheese. MAJOR POINTS FOR REMEMBERING THE NO CHEESE PART! Overall score I would give a 9/10. The Breakfast burrito was a perfect size to eat the whole thing and not feel like shit, but for the price it was too small ($15! And $1 to add salsa Fresca). The tortilla was crispy and warm but A little too big for the filling and slightly loose wrap. Excellent ratio of ingredients. The flavor was awesome. Great salty beans, oniony salsa Fresca, CRISPY. ASS. BACON. And chopped perfectly. The Salsas were great. Red was good but green was the fav. Spicy but not overpowering. Service was pretty fast and the restaurant was clean. Cute little market in a neighborhood

Yelp
I have given this place so many chances. The end result is always the same--terrible. I've tried all the burritos & they are all poor quality. I would rather pay more for higher quality of meat. If it's less expensive, then ask yourself why. I tried so hard to like this place, but forget it. Taco Bell is better quality than this. Thumbs down for this place. The meat is just fatty & dry. I thought the cheese quesadilla was safe--nope. That's just as bad! Sorry, but I have no love for Lola's!

Yelp
My brother and boyfriend had heard this was the best spot for breakfast burritos. As someone who does not care for egg dishes, I had a 9 am carnitas burrito and I would do it again in an instant. So simple but sooooo good! The person working there was so kind and went out of their way to offer help when needed. Seating outside was easy on picnic tables. I'm glad we didn't come here the first day of our trip because we probably wouldn't have gone anywhere else.

Kaitlyn K.

Yelp
The service is always so warm and welcoming! Then the food comes and it's like... YUM! The salsa is bomb to go with the breakfast or BRC burritos. Only downside is they aren't open everyday or else I'd be here everyday.

Stacy R.

Yelp
Service was amazing! The hostess was so friendly and gave us recommendations that didn't disappoint. Food was amazing! If you are looking for a fancy place, this is not it. It's a market and restaurant and looks are extremely deceiving. Hostess checked in with us after we ate and gave us some history on the building. We were pleasantly surprised by this little place and will most certainly be back!

Yelp
My go-to place for a BRC burrito. I always get the small and I finish it. I never can finish a regular size burrito so I LOVE the small option. Lola's is a great little hole in the wall that's well loved by many!

Yelp
It's not really a market and it's not really a deli but you should still go for their good grub, friendly service, and lively atmosphere. It's also a local neighborhood legend. It's just one room. You order at the counter and everything is cooked to order just a few feet away in the kitchen. There are a few tables inside for dining and a few tables outside. They've got lots of sodas, a huge variety of delicious Jarritos for sale, and beers, too, but I don't think you can drink the cervezas on-site. The carne asada burrito was good but I should have ordered it "con todo" (with everything). It was very fresh-tasting but a tad mushy. It needed some texture. The chicken taco with shredded chicken and a hard shell was nice but not spectacular. The "red" salsa is moderately hot and has a great, roasted, smoky flavor. It's excellent. The workers were as friendly as can be. The music was loud and rocking inside. Everyone was having fun. The carnitas in the kitchen looked insanely fresh and I'm definitely ordering it next time. I should have gotten the carnitas, no question. This place is a friendly, homey, local hang. Go get some.

Yelp
Price gouging,Lolas is the worse for Mexican food price gouging $14 for a breakfast burrito with bacon when you can get the same burrito down the street for $9

Manuel A.

Yelp
Truly, worth the drive from Vista. Great chicken enchiladas! Family owned for decades in El Barrio of "Carlos Malo" Go have a great packed in burritos too

Yelp
Love this place. They've been around forever and incredible fresh food. Got my baby his first burrito here, took the tortilla off and he devoured it. Seventeen years later he's still devouring their burritos.

David B.

Yelp
First review I've ever left and also first time to this place. Cashier was super friendly, points you in a good direction food wise. I got the chili relleno burrito, cashier recommended I try it toasted. Was the best burrito I've ever had. The green salsa on the other hand was other worldly. I could swim in it. This is a fantastic place to experience if you're a foodie and try a lot of local places. This one will not disappoint.

Yelp
First timer and while the burritos were good, the service left a bad taste in my mouth. We ordered at the counter and waited outside on the picnic bench with our dogs. Initially, we were unsure if we were going to eat onsite. However, after waiting, our hunger kicked in and decided to eat at the table we were waiting on. As we were unloading our food from the paper bags, a worker was staring at us from the doorway. After some time, she approached and said that we should have said we were eating in to save money on a brown paper bag our burritos were in and 4 small plastic cups of salsa and brought out plastic trays and salsa bottles that we didn't end up using. We had just spent $40 on 2 burritos and 2 drinks. Ruined our breakfast to say the least.

Yelp
Best tamales ever ...and breakfast burritos are sooo delicious! Henry and Dee make you feel like family

Yelp
Somebody recommended this place to me for breakfast burritos I was told they're very good and they're the best in North county but to my dismay, the breakfast burrito was bland not seasoned didn't taste good at all and it didn't really put their passion in love for making food into this burrito for me I get this place Negative stars because they was terrible

Maggie C.

Yelp
Visiting Carlsbad for the weekend and ran a search for best burrito. Burrito was amazing... and menudo too! We would take this over a formal restaurant. We will be back. Such a nostalgic restaurant with phenomenal service.

Yelp
I found this place about 5 years ago, a few months before I ended up moving too far away to visit, now I live in San Diego so I have the opportunity to enjoy the best carne asada burrito and horchata on the planet. I believe it's the same woman that worked there when I use to visit who was there this time and she has such cool, good energy and is really nice! I love Lola's and the location is so perfect as it's quiet, and peaceful. I definitely recommend coming by for food or just grabbing a drink from the cooler.

Yelp
What a spectacular little corner! I can only imagine what the vibe was back in the day when the buildings across the street were also open. Very happy that 7-Up (or as my Spanish teacher used to say Siete-Up) is still open! This is mostly a restaurant , as another review said don't expect a deli or market. As a vegetarian I have to say the service was great. The woman at the counter was happy to answer all of my nagging questions about the contents of the food. For my vegetarian and vegan friends, note the flour tortillas for the burritos do contain lard (and I'm sure they are delicious). The rice contains chicken broth. However, the refried beans do not contain animal products as well as the corn tortillas. I got the crispy veggie tacos which were delicious and the red and green salsas were the perfect balance of hot and mild.

Thomas A.

Yelp
The bean and cheese burritos are the best in the world. So pretty much everything else on the menu. Prices are ridiculously low. This is a neighborhood institution favored by locals and has recently come into the spotlight thanks to famous skateboarders and influencers who now come here as well.

Yelp
I have coming here since high school. I grew up in Carlsbad 5 mins from this place and it is a small resemblance and establishment that retains what Carlsbad used to be. A small, tight knit beach town with heavy Hispanic heritage and culture. I miss those days but hey, can't fight progress right? Well Lola's is sure doing a great job. Proof that you can be successful and not sell out or expand to 20 locations. To the food, I get the same thing every time I come here and have been for the last 15 years, 3 small bean&cheese with verde salsa, which is the best I have ever had, to this day. Which is insane because I seek out verde everywhere I go. I have tried the normal bean & cheese here once and idk why, but it just wasn't the same. I don't understand it either but it's probably a testament to their tortillas, which as my pops says, makes a Mexican joint great. I don't want to write this place a review because I selfishly want it to stay the little "secret" bomb Mexican place that only the real loc's know about. But in today's world, the mom & pop's need reviews to stay alive, or maybe not, but I love this place and I want to know it! But seriously, I haven't lived in the area for 10+ years and Henry still recognizes and knows me which you just don't experience anymore. This is a truly special place and I hope that one day I can bring my kids here and share stories about the shenanigans I used to get into in high school.
google avatar

Yelp
Idk what it is about this burrito but it's the best breakfast burrito I have ever had. The tortilla is so delicious and make the entire taste come together. I mixed both the green and red sauce and wow I almost ate the entire thing. I only had about 1/4 left of my burrito and I made sure to save it for the next day because it was that good.
google avatar

Kimberly J.

Yelp
Better experience. Food was better but I feel like some days are better than others and I don't know if it's because the different people that are cooking or if the ingredients change occasionally. Not sure but it has been better.
google avatar

Yelp
Inflation alert ! Portion alert !! Size of burrito down by 30% and price is up 25%, significant less meat in a carnita, bean and rice burrito. We have always loved Lola's for the great taste, price and portion size of food especially burritos. For a regular common family, it's a disappointment that size went down and price increased. Couldn't even see the carnitas in our carnita burritos. Taste still good but difficult to swallow when se saw how small, the once huge burrito, had become. Sad.

Paul F.

Yelp
Looking for a light lunch in Carlsbad, we found this place on Yelp. It lived up to the good reviews! It's not really a "market" in the sense of a convenience store, but a walk up counter-service Mexican restaurant. The tacos and chile relleno we had were very good! The relleno would have benefitted from a traditional red sauce, in addition to the fresh salsas provided by the friendly, helpful woman at the counter, with whom we had a pleasant conversation. There are a few tables indoors and a few more outdoors. Highly recommend Lola's!

JJ A.

Yelp
They're VERy stingy on their meat. I ordered a Carne Asada burrito and pretty much ended up with a bean burrito. Even opened up the tortilla and only found a shred of meat. This is the 2nd time I've eaten here, as well as my last. First time I ordered a breakfast burrito and there was only a bite or two of eggs. Unfortunately, I ordered it to go or else I would have asked for a refund. Rubio's is a better choice.
google avatar

Danielle T.

Yelp
The food is always amazing, you really can't go wrong. My go to is a chicken burrito with everything, add rice, guac, lettuce, pico and sub rancho cheese because that cheese is the best. Everyone is really friendly, the lunch rush is something else so if you can avoid coming when the high school lets out at 12:30-1:30 I would do so. The benches outside are really nice, you get a nice breeze with lunch or dinner. A must visit next time you're in Carlsbad!

Yelp
Craving a breakfast burrito so we gave Lola's a try after checking out of our hotel. We arrived mid morning which was good because I have heard there can be a wait here at times. We were immediately greeted by a kind lady who said everything on the menu is great. We ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and 2 Rico Tacos. The burrito was perfect size and had great melted cheese (which we were told they grate their own cheese from large blocks) and the bacon was tasty and perfectly cooked. Now the tacos were awesome. Seasoned ground beef, fried corn tortilla, cheese and lettuce. So simple but so good. They also gave us green and red salsa. Both were exceptional. Tons of flavor in the green sauce and the red was nice and spicy. They have some tables inside and outside with umbrellas. This place is worth a stop when you are in Carlsbad. Can't wait to go back and try everything else.
google avatar

Yelp
A fantastic hidden Carlsbad gem. Off the beaten path by a few blocks, it's quite rare to see tourists in here....a simply phenom family owned Mexican restaurant. The mole sauce, the salsa verde, the bean/cheese burritos, the tacos....hell, everything is simply authentic and delicious. The only real drag is that word is getting out, and it's getting more and more packed around lunchtime....so we try to go just before or after lunch these days. We ALWAYS bring home a couple of pints of the salsa verde....it's that good.
google avatar

Noemi W.

Yelp
Great service, red salsa is the best! Chill ambiance and, best of all, good food. Ordered bean and cheese, carne asada taco, carne asada burrito and carnitas taco.

Yelp
This place has been a go to for three generations in my family. My mom took me as a kid and I continued as a teenager during lunch break. Into adulthood with my own kids who will choose a small bean and cheese over an ice cream sometimes. We have brought her friends here and now their family travels from Oceanside for this Carlsbad Lola's favorite. We love you Lola's and will come as long as your open. Which is not Mondays, don't forget and promise your kid a small bean and cheese just to show up empty handed. They are a small family owned business and close two days out of the week to be present and with their family. more business need to make that a priority too.

Yelp
Easy 5 Stars, food is outstanding. If you're looking for Mexican food in or near Carlsbad, look no further. Homemade tortillas, fresh Mexican food, this place is great. Family owned and service is great.

Yelp
Service: I placed an in person order with a lovely older gentleman for a breakfast burrito and chilaquiles. 30 minutes later, the restaurant had emptied out and I was still waiting for my order. Customers who had ordered after me had received their order and left. I approached the pick up counter and before I could get 3 words out, an older brunette with glasses brusquely cut me off and told me my order was coming. I sat back down without saying anything further. 5 minutes later (i hhad been here for 35 min at this point), The brunette finally called my order and handed it to me without any courtesy or apology. As Im walking away, the older genteman asked what had taken my order so long. The brunette with glasses replied loudly, "What the hell does she expect? She ordered chilaquiles." As I sat down to eat outside, the rude brunette comes by, demanding my chilaquiles back, saying that they had forgotte the eggs on the chilaquiles. Same attitude. Same rudeness. Again, no apology. Food: unremarkable. Chicken breakfast burrito was bland. Chilaquiles forgettable. Overall: unworthy of a return trip, especially for long wait + unremarkable food + rude worker.

Yelp
I love this place. Great food. Reasonable prices. Try the carnitas or chicken burritos. Add guac for extra awesomeness.

Karter V.

Yelp
One of my favorite spots in Carlsbad all the food is great. Carnitas burrito with rice n beans slaps like will smith. Service is very fast and the employees are awesome. Barrio vibes are cool and the market is clean.

Yelp
I love this place very much! It's not gross cheap Mexican take out, it's very good. One of the best in North County because there is not much that is very good. This is a special place. I had the machaca burrito today, everything was excellent and flavorful, the green salsa is amazing! All of it including the great service from the lady at the register to the cook who brought me my burrito. You really do not get this kind of food and service anymore. Love it here!

Yelp

Yelp
Our friend is a REGULAR at Lola's and when we told our friend we were going to be in San Diego and wanted Mexican food, she said I've got the perfect place to meet for lunch! We met at Lola's and met everyone at the register (sorry but I don't remember their names), they were so friendly since we came from Sacramento to try their wonderful food. Our friend ordered a chili rellano burrito and we copied her and ordered it, too! We were NOT disappointed, the burrito was fabulous as was the red and green salsa! My husband finished his burrito and wanted try the Rico Taco and that was outstanding, I took a bite just to make sure it was as good as it looked! We can't wait to tell our friends about Lola and come back whenever we're in San Diego again!
google avatar

Yelp
Look no further for the premium Mexican food location when you are in Carlsbad Village. The quality of the ingredients is matched by the amazing quality of the service. I may be biased since my apt is only blocks from the restaurant but I've come here many times when I wasn't living close by. The local community vibes can't be beat. Please stop by and enjoy my go to of hard shell carne asada tacos.
google avatar

Suzy J.

Yelp
Pretty pricey!! Crunchy tacos tasty but mystery meat in the asada tacos? Maybe it's barbacoa? Carnitas we're tough and hard to chew.. chips good/taco sauces good, pico has jalapeños which is good if you like hot? Overall, visiting from out of town I would try another place before coming here again..

Yelp
Lola's! I'm a little ashamed that I have lived here for so long and today was my first time getting food from Lola's. It was awesome and I'm seriously considering going back again to get dinner. They have vegan and vegetarian options which is a super rare thing to have at true Mexican food restaurants. Vegan tortillas, beans, and rice by request, and ALL of their refried beans are lard free. Big win for the vegetarians out there! Chile reno burrito was insanely good as well as the vegan veggie burrito that my wife had. Excellent red and green salsa...we are all know how important salsa is. I would also like to mention how friendly the staff was. My apologies for not catching her name but the really nice lady working the front of the house explained the menu to us and was super helpful. There is a nice outdoor eating area in the front with tables in the grass and under the shade of the neighborhood trees. This restaurant has been here for many, many years and I can understand why. Thanks for lunch!

Yelp
Local neighborhood market & spot to grab a quick bite. Conveniently located just a couple of blocks from Carlsbad Village. I love that I'm able to call in my order and it's ready quickly. So far I've had the breakfast burrito with machaca and a standard bean and cheese burrito - both were great. My friend had the shrimp tacos and said they were delicious. Can't wait to try more items here! Staff was friendly and quick.

Yelp
Came in and ordered a typical burrito I used to order in Texas. Bean, cheese, and rice. It was fairly priced and huge! Tasted fantastic! The best part of this place wasn't the food, but the service. Frances was awesome! Great customer service and very friendly! I will be checking this place out again, soon

Nico D.

Yelp
The bean rice and cheese burrito is the best I've ever had. The refried beans are fresh and perfectly seasoned, and the cheese and rice perfectly complement it. The tortilla is solid enough to contain the filling (no butts will be burst when you bite the bottom of this burrito), and soft enough not to be too chewy. You should eat it there if you can so 1: you get it while it's hot and 2: you can have unlimited access to their delicious salsa (I like to alternate between la salsa verde and la salsa roja). The price is cheaper than most other places in the area ($7.54 with tax at the time of writing this) and if you aren't too hungry they also have a mini option for half the price. The people are nice and the service is fast, and they have plenty of indoor and outdoor seating for you to choose from. It's located in a quiet little neighborhood with plenty of street parking. The name confused me at first (I thought it was the 7th Lola's on the corner of Market and Deli), but that's probably because I'm a little slow :) If you're in the area, give it a try!
