Where To Eat Brunch on New Year’s Day, 2018 - Eater LA

"On Long Beach’s Retro Row, Lola’s is open all day long on New Year’s Day. It’s a colorful, cheery spot with an outdoor patio and blue corn pancakes, pasilla smoked chilaquiles, and what will go down very well on January 1, huevos rancheros." - Mona Holmes

Went for Taco Tuesday but came too early because it starts at 6p. So got the happy hour menu instead. The drinks were solid but the food was a bit disappointing. Chips & salsa were good & complimentary. I ordered strictly from the happy hour menu & got chicken molè nachos & it tasted like a Lunchables pizza sauce packet. My first order came out & it had no chicken whatsoever so I sent it back & it came out again with just enough chicken to look like sprinkled confetti on top. Ordered the Mexican street corn & I would NOT recommend. More like cream(ed) corn with barely any corn in this milky sauce. I was expecting elotè on a stick or in a cup. So i was done with food but kept drinking because the drinks were on point.

Street parking. No specific gluten free options but they have food that is close to gluten free. Close, not completely gluten free. Vegetarian options. Food service. Dogs are allowed outside. The food is pretty fresh and one of the creamy salsa is very good. The food isn't too spicy for people with normal spice tolerance. The outdoor seating is on the sidewalk so it's a little cramped. Depends on where you sit, the music can be loud. They have heating lamps for cooler weather. Good coffee.

Love Lola’s! Home cooked vibe with a lot of flavor. Delicious drinks! And we’ll forever be obsessed with the “secret receipe” avocado salsa!

Google
Really excellent and reasonably priced Mexican food in a quaint location that seems like a former diner. The bar and happy our offering looked appealing but the server didn't make mention of the happy hour when we were seated just before 6 so we missed it. I can't wait to go try some other items here!

Google
First time going and was happy with their delicious food and friendly staff. Called ahead to make a reservation for a party of 8 for a birthday and had no inconveniences. The restaurant is a bit small but popular so it does get busy quickly. I definitely want to go back and try different food items. However, for those wanting to check it out, there is limited street parking and a gratuity tip is included in the bill.

My sister brought me here for breakfast since she had tried Lola's dinner but not breakfast, and they did not disappoint. Food was so authentic and flavorful! I could tell it made with love ❤️ we also had mimosa to share with OJ and Jaimaica, I paired so well with the entrées. The complimentary chips and salsa were so good we finished the salsa and chips. Will be coming back again!

Google
Overall good experience, cool ambience for a casual night out. I got the street tacos and even though they had good flavor, I was not the biggest fan of the chicken texture. The Lola margarita was pretty tasty and good for the price. The only setback was that they forgot some of our food but we ended up getting it a little later. I would come back and try other food as it was a nice place to sit at and have conversation with my party.

Before heading to visit 'Eclipsed Emporium' I was suggested by my wife to come and check out this place. She had seen it a few times driving by before. We came in for dinner and to our surprise they had pretty good Mexican food. Chips & salsas were homemade and delicious. She & I both had their Molé Burritos and our daughter had their Chicken Burrito. Drinks to accompany were Mango Margarita, Iced Tea, and Horchata. To end the meal we had their Churros & Horchata ice cream for dessert. Restaurant was clean, organized, their service was friendly & professional. Our waitress was above & beyond. Didn't remember her name, however she was very cute & bubbly. We would come back for their excellent service.

Yelp
Absolutely love coming to spend time here. We had a quick business meeting and business was complimented greatly by way of perfectly seasoned chicken, asada, and carnitas. You can't go wrong here with anything that you choose. If you need help just ask your server. Jeffrey is always a cool guy to get suggestions from if he's working on a particular day. Lunch time is great and if you're in the area on Sunday they have a totally different brunch menu to choose from

Yelp
Oh so good.... It was my first time here. I pass by this place all the time but always on my way to eat somewhere else haha. I finally made the conscious decision to eat here and I'm so glad I did. I was worried it would be busy because it's a Friday night and it seems to be a popular spot. Fortunately we were seated right away. The place is not very big but there is outdoor seating. It has a narrow shape with bar seating on one side, high tops in the middle, and booths on the other side. There are also a few regular tables in the front. Beware the sun may hit you right in the face in the late afternoon if you're in a booth facing front. All the dishes we tried were delicious. You're served chips right away which comes with a yummy roasted salsa (with a kick) and an avocado crema dip (not spicy). I had the Birria Guadalajara which was insanely good and had just the right amount of kick without being overwhelming - or lingering. Others in my party had the cochinita and mole negro. Also the flan was tasty. I'm not usually a fan of Mexican flan but this one I liked. Service was efficient and friendly. Our server gave a few good recommendations including a yummy white sangria I had. We got a discount for checking in through Yelp which was a nice surprise. I believe there's also a Yelp waiting list which is helpful for peak times. Parking seems to be street only.

Yelp
Great place, came here on a Friday around 5:30 and it was packed. I'm assuming it's for their HH and great food. Service was great, aside from it being busy drinks, chips and food came fast. They have this green creama sauce that dosent have any cream but is super good! Salsa was spicy! I highly recommend the passion and guava margarita both were super good. I loved their birria and the pableno mole. Fresh corn tortillas and guacamole. They had live music outside and were serving food. Cute area to walk off a real afte. If you check in they off 10% off your check.

Yelp
Walked into Lola's with the expectation of having a quick and easy lunch and left completely amazed by my experience. The food, drinks, and vibes are delicious to all senses. Olivia and Taylor took care of my friend and I at the bar and could not have been more welcoming and kind. Highly recommend the al pastor burrito as the flavors are phenomenal, especially the sweetness from the grilled pineapple. I expected the street corn to be a bit more spicy and crunchy, but it was more of a sweet creamed corn (very yummy, just different than what I'm used to). Will definitely be back!

Yelp
My 2 friends & I great pleasure of dining at Lola's in the Bixby Knolls location. And, I must say, it was an incredible experience from start to end. We had a reservation at 12 noon & were seated promptly. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by Alex. We enjoyed how friendly & had a great demeanor. Alex went above & beyond to ensure our first time here was enjoyable. I asked if they serve any mocktails as I cannot have any alcohol since I am expecting. Alex gave me a recommendation of the guava margarita. Let me tell you, it was super delicious. I can taste the guava with a hint of lime. Alex's attentiveness throughout the afternoon made us feel truly valued as customers. As we were waiting patiently for our entree's, Alex gave us complimentary chips & salsa. The red salsa has a very nice kick to it. I added some salsa on my Carnitas. The green one has good flavor. And now for the food. We chose the Birria tacos with cheese, Carnitas, & Mulitas. Each dish had great flavor. Huge portions for a good price. I love the ambiance of Lola's patio & the dining area. It felt very cozy & a great atmosphere. I recommend Lola's to anyone looking for delicious Mexican food, attentive service, & great drinks.

Yelp
Food has great flavor! It's really home made taste, at first it seem like it was going to be another Mexican Americanized restaurant, but not at all. Service was nice, smooth day. Ambiance is nice.

Yelp
Came in for lunch with my hubby the day after Valentine's Day.( to beat the crowds lol) Very cute restaurant we spotted while running errands. Luckily it wasn't busy at all. Our server was great... thanks for the small talk sorry I can't recall her name. Our food was delicious except the ceviche I didn't like it in my opinion. ( but my husband did) When in the area we would definitely be back.
google avatar

Leslie D.

Yelp
Good costumer service and great food! Love the free chips and especially their green salsa. Had the Al Pastor burrito and loved the pork combination with the pineapple!
google avatar

Yelp
Second time coming back but my first time ordering items from their breakfast menu and it did not disappoint. The server was really friendly and the food was great. The restaurant wasn't at capacity but I would still call in to make a reservation. Somehow we ended up in the same table that I sat when I was here before. What are the chances? I love coming to Lola's for that quality Mexican cuisine. Breakfast burrito was good and I ordered the ceviche again because I craved it.

Yelp
We were in the area and a big group of 15 on a Saturday night looking for somewhere to eat. Luckily Lola's had a table that would fit our group so we were able to get seated within 5 minutes. They have a TV in the bar area so we also got to watch the football game that was on! Our drink orders were taken right away, but it took our waitress a little while to come back and take our food order even though they didn't seem very busy. Despite this, once our food order was in, the food came out very fast! The portions are big here! And most dishes came out really good. I got the pulpo y camarón quesadilla but I would say it was pretty underwhelming compared to other people's dishes. The mulitas were very good! I thought they would be smaller but were big and covered in yummy toppings. Another favorite that I got to try was the birria Guadalajara, they gave a lot of meat and the consomé was tasty. They also give complimentary chips and salsa, the red salsa has a nice kick to it and the green one has such good flavor. Make sure to put some on whatever you order!

Yelp
If you're ever in Bixby Knolls and are looking for DELICIOUS Mexican food, THIS IS A GREAT SPOT! From the drinks to the meals we had.... EVERYTHING was ON POINT! It's a small, cozy place with both inside and outside dining available. Service was good. We didn't feel rushed to hurry up and eat and get out, The birria tacos and consumé were BOMB The Jalisco tacos were FIRE The drinks were so good that we didn't even think to try any other kind! We told ourselves next time we'll try something different! Server, Diane (I think that was her name. I'm AWFUL with remembering names ) told us they also have a DELICIOUS brunch. I would DEFINITELY recommend this restaurant! So go in, have the birria tacos and Agua Fresca margarita, and thank me later Provecho/Bon Appétit

Yelp
Made reservations to eat here with my sister's for Sunday brunch. They offer chips and 2 different kind of sauces. Both of the sauces complimented the chips well, it was a great start to our meal. Service took a little longer than expected but our waitress was attentive to our needs and made sure that she didn't forget about us. We had outside patio seating since the weather was perfect. I ordered their birria tacos with a strawberry margarita - both was good ... although the tacos lacked a little flavor. I'll stop by another time just for the drinks
google avatar

Yelp
Came here a few days ago and I liked it. I've driven by so many times and just kept thinking that I should try it. I came with my daughter and preferred the fish tacos and carnitas plate. Sadly the fish tacos taste like pure oil. Not good at all! The carnitas were delicious though . The service here was good. Girl was busy but fast. This place actually is smaller than I thought. Decor is colorful. Restroom was disgusting though! Floor had a puddle of urine in the corner. And honestly they can put some tile or something it's just nasty!
google avatar

Elizabeth R.

Yelp
Food: 10/10 - Divine. The chimichangas are a MUST, and that's saying a lot because I don't enjoy them normally. The best I've ever had. I also highly recommend the Conchinita Pibil It's a hearty meal that you can extend for multiple servings, and the meat is seasoned to perfection. Service: 10/10 - Wonderful, our server (Lisa, I think?) was super attentive and sweet. Ambiance: 7/10 - The vibes fell flat, unfortunately Feels like a slightly renovated diner. They tried to make it cute, but the vibes felt too casual for the premium price of the food. We still enjoyed our experience overall, though!
google avatar

Candace M.

Yelp
I loved this meal because they were able to accommodate all my requests... and our server was happy to do it. It was soooo flavorful and a lot of food, I had some the next day. I ordered the mole verde bowl with rice instead of beans and the mole on the side. Yum!! I'll be back for more.
google avatar

Stephanie J.

Yelp
5 stars for the freshly made chips, tortillas and avocado guacamole alone! There was no waiting time on a Sunday afternoon, service was great, and the general vibe was casual.
google avatar

Tiffany M.

Yelp
Five stars all around! Lola's wins on flavor, ambiance, authenticity, service, and offerings. I know when I'm in the Bixby Knolls area, I have to stop here and get their fresh, delicious take on my favorite Mexican dishes. I came recently with my family and tried their Birria Queso Tacos for the first time which did not disappoint. They were juicy and flavorful and my Lola's margarita was a perfect complement. Every dish also comes with a side of fresh tortilla chips, red salsa and their specialty green "crack" salsa (worth the hype). I also appreciated that our server was super knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive. They don't have a parking lot but you shouldn't have trouble finding street parking outside the restaurant or in the surrounding residential area. Definitely worth a stop when in Bixby!

Payam Ali K.

Yelp
Lola's is definitely a good spot for Mexican food. I will do a pros and cons for this location. Pros - The chips and salsa are quite delicious. Hit the spot right before the meals. Great flavor. - The service we got was really good. Constantly checking up and making sure everything was good. Easy 5/5 for service. - The pastor mulitas were really good and a go to. - The drinks and cocktails were really good and tasty Cons - The carne asada was a bit tough. The toppings were great, but I'd probably go with the pork version as the pastor was way better. - Prices are definitely reasonable, but I do wish it was a little more bang for your buck. Overall, I'd give Lola's an easy 4.2/5, for good food, great service, and comfy indoor atmosphere.

Yelp
I've been to the restaurant on 4th street and technically haven't eaten at this location but I recently ordered tamales for Christmas Eve and I went in to place an order. Unfortunately I missed the option to be able to pick up on Christmas Eve so I had to take the tamales to-go and reheat them myself the day of. They require a 48 hour notice so noted for next time. The tamales were delicious! I got 6 of the sweet corn and 6 poblano pepper and cheese. They are the perfect size for the amount they charge and I would definitely not hesitate to get them again and for other occasions. Service was impeccable. The woman at the counter was quick and polite. Highly recommend!

Ida N.

Yelp
Awesome and healthier . Top on the list , Tamales. It's available shorterm during Christmas/New Year's. We get dozens and freeze them for the rest of the year
google avatar

Erika L.

Yelp
Food tastes homemade - probably one of the highest compliments I could give a restaurant. We ordered their Tamales and the Quesadilla De Pulpo y Camaron. The masa melted in your mouth, it was so soft and savory. The green salsa and chicken were exceptional. The quesadilla is simple but delicious - melted queso oaxaca with a mix of octopus and shrimp. Also comes with freshly made sides of guacamole, pico de gallo, and crema chipotle. Drinks were solid and service was excellent. Definitely one of the more authentic mexican spots I've ate at in Long Beach.
google avatar

Kris E.

Yelp
Every time I come here, the service is so bad I remember why I don't like coming here. The food is pretty good though, order takeout and take it home with you.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
Came here for a team holiday lunch. Cute little restaurant with great food and amazing staff! Our server did a great job at managing our table and food came out fairly quick. They had chips and salsa at the table for us, the green sauce was super yummy! Their horchata was perfectly sweet, no too overpowering with the cinnamon. Huge menu variety and they even had tamales on special for Christmas! Ended up ordering the a loaded quesadilla and it was very filling! Definitely a great spot in Long Beach for authentic Mexican food!
google avatar

Mary T.

Yelp
Kudos to Lola's for participating in Bixby Knolls first SantaCon event last weekend. As someone who lives in DTLB it gave me a chance to see the offerings on Atlantic Avenue in a 'merry' way! Thanks for being part of the community with the gesture of a free margarita!
google avatar

Nick T.

Yelp
Love this place. Food and Drinks - 10/10 Service - 7-10/10 (depends on the server) Price - 10/10 ($40-$75 for couples - price mostly depends on amount of drinks) Atmosphere - 10/10 (they make the most of the space and layout) Availability - 8-10/10 (depends on the day of week... Taco Tuesdays, brunch, holidays, etc. Turn over is relatively quick... we've never waited longer than 20ish min.) All in all it's one my favorite spots around Bixby. Highly recommend
google avatar

Yelp
I've reviewed Lola's several times before. A great Mexican restaurant. Great prices on drinks, especially their wonderful house Margaritas. Food is excellent. They've never disappointed me ! Service was excollet too , great staff! Nice outdoor patio. Our dogs love their quesadillas!.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
Good service and great food. If you're thinking about this place do yourself a favor and go. Thank me later
google avatar

Yelp
I picked up the vegetarian enchiladas to go and really enjoyed. I would come back and dine in next time.
google avatar

Yelp
This is our second time visiting Lola's, the first was at their Retro Row location. It is located in a nice neighborhood and close to the main read. The staff is very friendly and attentive. Service is quick! I had their salad + chicken which is a huge serving and definitely shareable. The ingredients are of the highest quality and very consistent to their second location. Even though it's shareable it's so good I ate the entire thing. Paired with their strawberry margarita with a tajin rim and I am in heaven.
google avatar

Allison R.

Yelp
Lola's is such a cute, lowkey spot with a really great menu! My friend and I went for an early dinner (5ish) and we were seated quickly and got the best service! I love a classic marg, so we got a pitcher to split between 2 of us, and it was more than enough! The prices are a little on the higher end BUT you get quality, delicious food...and strong drinks!
google avatar

Sara C.

Yelp
The drinks are good but every time I eat here the food is lukewarm and mediocre. Not worth it. Good place for a marg and chips and salsa.
google avatar

Diandra S.

Yelp
I love places like these where they serve chips and salsa! I love their menu items and it was hard to choose! Got the al pastor burrito... delish and with the fresh piñas? MMM MM GOOD! Lol its big enough to share tbh. My boyfriend had the asada mulitas. It was cheesy and super good! Recommend! I had 2 drinks- the guava margarita MUST TRY and the La Mala Muerta, YES! YES! YES! I was buzzed. LOL will go back forsure! I like the style of the restaurant also and I appreciate that there is a seating area outside.

Andi M.

Yelp
Really wanted to love this place but the food was just ok. Under-crisped fish tacos, weak watermelon margarita... good service and ambiance though

Dan W.

Yelp
Food was good. Service, unfortunately, was as bad as I've seen in a long time. Sat at the bar. Staff was friendly upon entry but in 90 minutes the bartender rarely paid attention to us without us getting her attention. This all despite there was only a total of 4 people at the bar including us and there was another bartender taking care of the other couple. Never refilled either of our waters in 90 minutes despite putting empty glasses at the top of the bar for the entirety of our evening. Never cleared a single plate we had despite us stacking them all up on top of each other leaning tower of Pisa style and moving them to the next seat over to try and give a hint. The coup de grace was that my wife clearly didn't like her cocktail. She took one sip and left it at the head of the bar while almost immediately ordering a sangria to replace it. Never did she ask if we didn't like it. Instead, 45 minutes later she simply said "are you done with this?" and proceeded to charge us $20 for the cocktail. Most expensive single sip of all time. Checkout time came...we were sitting there for awhile waiting for her to stop drying glasses (which is all she did the entire time we were at the bar) and finally she came over and I asked for the check. Wife's plate still had a near full serving (we were full from appetizers...food was good though), didn't ask if we wanted a to go box. We had to actually bring it to her attention later after I had signed the bill. $130 between 2 people sitting at the bar and not taking up table space. I assume she was a barback fronting as a bartender. That is me giving the restaurant the benefit of the doubt because from a service standpoint she was terrible. If you want to work in the hospitality industry then actually be hospitable. No one is forcing you to work there. Was hoping for a nice night out that we rarely get to do. IF I order from here again it will be delivery. Food saved it from 1 star. Hats off to the chef.
google avatar

Astin H.

Yelp
I wish they had a better cocktail program. Their cocktails are too sweet and taste premade. Menu has a good variety. Staff is friendly and they offer great service.
google avatar

D C.

Yelp
I had the two mulitas and though it consisted of tortillas versus traditional gorditas, they were delicious! Their agua de jamaica tasty too w/o being too sweet. The queso fundido was delicious. Christina, our waitress was excellent and attentive to our needs
google avatar

Charlyann M.

Yelp
Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl. Damn, that song replays in my head every time I see this restaurant. This was my first visit. The great: our server Jeffery was fabulous. Great personality and great service. The good: the potato taquitos were crunchy yummy and the birra queso tacos were messy and delightful. The bad: parking was very limited and street only. The drinks come in a can. But, at least they were cold. Bonus points for a full bar!!! Happy hour during the week with 7 buck margaritas.
google avatar

Tommy M.

Yelp
Our first time eating here and no doubt is our last time here. There are a few parking spaces in the front as well as residential parking. We noticed a line of seven people standing outside. We put our name on the list for a 45 to an hour wait. There is also a patio but it was closed. We finally were led to our seats just about 45 mins. later. About 15 to 20 mins. before our waitress came to take our drink order and bring us a basket of chips and salsa. We went through two basket of chips and salsa before our food came out, the food was just OK, and lastly we had to flag down someone just to pay our bill.
google avatar

Toni C.

Yelp
Best Mole I've ever had. This restaurant always comes through with unique and delicious meals. They also serve a really fabulous VEGAN Burrito with Soyrizo which is so tasty. This restaurant is more of a healthy version of your Classic Mexican dishes. And the green & red salsas they serve with the chips is excellent.
google avatar

Senia O.

Yelp
We love this place! We're there about once a month on Friday evenings. Great drinks and food and they have some good vegan options. My favorite is the vegan street tacos. They are so so good. The staff is always super nice and welcoming. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Jazninn M.

Yelp
Frozen stale corn for 13$ ?! Why does the carne asada have bacon ? My beans were cold . Waitress said they come frozen . Gross
google avatar

Susan J.

Yelp
Went for $5 Margarita Monday. The drinks were good and worth $5. We ordered taquitos and mini chimichangas. Taquitos were over cooked; 3 came with the order. The 4 bean & cheese chimis were good and ample size. We were both served our own chips & salsa. Service was fast and attentive. 10a% discount if you check-in on Yelp. Clean and nice interior. I hear the dessert is delicious but I was too full to order. I will go back.

Yelp
Best mole in Long Beach. Definitely good to spot when I want a nice plate of delicious chicken mole.
google avatar

Lauro A.

Yelp
Had a family breakfast and the food was delicious! The service was good and we had the restaurant to ourselves due to reserving a spot right when they opened.
google avatar

Yelp
Room temperature rice and beans, but bottom of the plate was warm. Taste not with flavor. If microwaving is the new solution, I'm not interested.

Yelp
I'm a little late on this review but really enjoyed my first experience here. We picked this place for a surprise birthday breakfast for a close friend. We enlisted the support of her bf. So we could surprise her and he picked this spot. It was an early Saturday morning and it was not yet packed. We were greeted warmly and made our surprise way over to our birthday girl. Our server-mi tocaya (someone with the same name), Cristina was super awesome. She kept the delicious salsas and chips coming; the green salsa was the best. More than her welcoming and friendly demeanor, her conversation and her own story was the best. Cristina I can't wait to come back and catch up on how your conference went!! I ordered the Mexican Eggs Benedict, which had tender birria which melted in my mouth and it was so yummy, The only critique is the potatoes were not seasoned. The salsa helped. Would definitely get it again. The birthday girl ordered the Mexican French toast which looked amazing. The biggest surprise was my friend's Vegan soyrizo and eggs scramble. Literally, so hearty and melt in your mouth amazing. I wish I had ordered it lol I'm definitely going to get that next time. The restaurant is colorful, there is indoor booth and table seating as well as bar seating and outdoor table seating also. Love the colorful decor! The staff is really what makes me want to come back! Can't wait to go back for taco tuesdays. Good tip is parking can be scarce. There is street parking but there was street construction that day; maybe consider more time to park when going!

Yelp
Great experience! We got seating outside with a heater, the service was incredible. They were super friendly and attentive. Being 8 months pregnant and not being able to drink isn't fun sometimes but they provided me many virgin options. I would recommend to stop by and give them a try!

Yelp
Wow Lola's was such a delight. Of course I'm always late to the party. Started off with great tasting Bloody Marys, a must for every brunch. The Chips with cilantro sauce and salsa was amazing. I had the Mexican Eggs Benedict with juicy birria on top of cheese filled gorditas, refried beans, chipotle hollandaise with two poached eggs. Delicious. My friend had the Smokey Pasilla Chilaquiles. Topped off with a bottle of Sparkling Sunday Funday Mimosas with orange juice and aqua de jamaica tea. Service was excellent Our server explained each dish in detail since we had never been there. Can't wait to go back and try all the different Moles.

Yelp
Nice ambiance but the brunch food was okay. Nothing crazy but I will most likely not return for brunch. Maybe I'll return to try dinner. The chilaquiles tasted too much like birria which I personally did not like. Sounded good but was not deli. The service was mid
