Best Mexican Restaurants in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"Chula Vista natives understand the hype around Lolita’s lineup of Mexican-American creations such as the California burritos prepared with carne asada, french fries, cheddar cheese, and sour cream, along with its top-selling carne asada fries or chips. Combination plates are under $15 and include rice, beans, and the diner’s choice of entree (tacos, enchiladas, burritos, and more). Options are available for all three meals throughout the day, making this shop ideal for everything from breakfast burritos to lunch specials and family-value meals. Laidback and unassuming, the counter-service restaurant is a top contender when looking for a relaxed place to dine with family and friends, or for a solo lunch date." - Roxana Becerril

Where to Find the Best California Burritos in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"This taco shop empire hailing from the South Bay has some of the best fries in the game, meaning your California burrito will have the golden, crispy-fried goodness that many seek out. The quality of the beef and cheese kicks its rendition a step above the rest. Inside, expect casual wooden tables, tiled floors, and a sign on one wall that reads “Patience is the essence of fine Mexican food.” (Message, taken.)" - Candice Woo

First time here....very good overall, just enough of spices, sauce and flavors ... cant go wrong with chicken enchiladas 😋 we will be back again

Google
Some food was very good and some was just pathetic. The place is very small inside, 3 tables, and the middle one was being used for employee reviews or something. Not sure. The salsa is green, mild, and almost spicy. I think I'd much rather have Cholula than these 3 options. The music was a bit loud to be able to talk with a friend. There was always 3 to 4 employees behind the little counter, they seemed in excess for 2 registers and a drink machine. The good: 2 beef enchiladas, for $7.95 I'd get it again. 1 beef chimichanga topped with guac, lettuce, cheese, for $9.40. But it was served in a basket with a paper liner. The paper was getting ripped up when trying to cut it to eat. That's a very bad choice and made it difficult to eat. If it were in a to-go container or a plate I'm sure it would have been much more enjoyable. The bad: Chips and guac & cheese for $8.25. I expected chips and a dish of guac to dip. Not here you get few dollops of guac like a Nacho style, but about 75% chips are dry. Absolutely not worth the price, so many places chips and salsa is free. Maybe if they doubled the guac and added sour cream and jalapeño. Or charged maybe $5 as is. Just not worth it at all. The 3 rolled tacos with guac, and some powder cheese, for $6.05. These were not much larger than a pencil and empty at both ends. Where is the lettuce and shreaded cheese? These were just disappointing. Half the food was a 1 star and half was 4+ star. Would I go back again? Maybe but will the good stuff today could be the bad stuff next visit? There are many taco shops to try in the area.

Google
Can't go wrong with the carne asada fries. It's consistent in every location I've been to. No other chain is like that for Mexican food. This location is the smallest one out of all the ones I've been to and maintains the cleanliness and setup like the bigger locations.

Google
A South Bay classic. I’ve had Mexican food all around the world. Being completely honest Lolita’s is an American interpretation of regional Mexican food but this is still some of the best Mexican food I’ve ever had. I’m terms of American Mexican food Lolita’s is amongst the best. Many argue that it isn’t the best, but without a doubt amongst the best. The carne asada fries, California burritos, super rolled tacos, crispy beef tacos are highly recommended! Their red salsa is again, amongst the best I’ve ever had anywhere in the world. It’s simple, very flavorful, and almost always busy. I recommend ordering ahead to avoid long wait times. There isn’t much seating available indoors so be prepared to take it to go.

Google
I Love this Spot. The food is always delicious, extremely fresh and great portions. I am obsessed with their fish burrito, and the ceviche. The place is very clean and well taken care of, you can tell they have pride in their restaurant.

Manuel G.

Google
The wait was worth it but now I can order on the app and pick up my food on demand. My go to order is a Carne Asada burrito and a side of beans plus an order of three chicken rolled tacos w/ sour cream. Lolita's is consistent and fresh. In Chula Vista we have lots of options for Mexican food but time and time again Lolita's keeps bringing the flavor to the table. If you're new or bring a crew, order the carne asada fries and a couple of California burritos. Thank me later! There's a reason this place has been in business for 40+ years!

Angel L.

Google
Never thought I'd say this, but this place has gone completely downhill. These locations were a staple in San Diego Mexican food for years but it's just not what it used to be. The last few times I've came I order a Carne Asada burrito but they seem to consistently give me a thin bean and sour cream burrito. The owners greed has cost this place it's soul, If I could give it a negative star I would. That's how much I'm disappointed with what's left of this place. This place went from Lolita's Taco Shop to No-lita's taco shop.

Cristian V.

Google
This review is a bit different, I walked in today @10:52am asking the young man in the register if he could please give me change for a $20 bill since I wanted to help out a homeless man outside of 7/11. He was kind enough to do so but the rude comments that what seemed to be the manager and the other cashier was very disappointed. I’m really sorry man to had put you through that for trying to be kind and helpful. Its disappointing that I’m a customer that come in weekly and now I’m going to have a bad image of this. The two ladies did not have to be rude saying who he thought he was to be changing the bill for me. He could have just declined if you would have told him but honestly that was very disrespectful to him. I really hope the owner sees this review and put them on their spot. The food is always great but this experience was very disappointing.

Yelp
Lolitas is a great place that is my favorite restaurant. Even though the only thing I ever had there was a carne asada fries meal it was the greatest food I ever tryed. My friend Kameron (who is currently eating a burrito from here) loves the Lolita's food too especially the carne asada burrito he is eating right now. Even though I am 10 years old only I love Lolita's enough to write a properly typed review about how good Lolita's and their great food is.I would definetly visit again if I ever get a chance to soon.
google avatar

Shantee D.

Yelp
Came for a chorizo burrito and as always Lolita's did not disappoint. My burrito was cooked to perfection. They have a new guy working names Angel and I feel like that is the only thing they were missing. Someone with good customer service. He was excellent. Helped me with my tray and even offered to refill my drink. I have been here many times because the food is always good, but Angel is the best!
google avatar

Yelp
Pretty good!!! I've had Lolita's at Petco but this location was better. Great customer service and great food! Right next door to Chula Vista Brewery !!

Yelp
Shrinkflationat its best!! Growing up, this used to be the only good taco shop around to go to, years later I still question myself why I still come back... convenience is the only reason I can think why. I ordered a carne asada plate, a carne asada burrito, and a taco, which easily exceeded $31.00, definitely not worth it. The prices keep on going up and the portions keep on getting smaller. The carne asada plate should have a decent amount of guacamole, here is less than a forkful of that. Dont get me started on the carne asada burrito which could easily be confused for a kids' menu burrito, that small. Flavor is good, but you could easily drive down the road for something cheaper and just as flavorful. By now, Lolitas is just meh, look elsewhere..there are better options. Sad to say Lolitas is not what it was.
google avatar

Kymberlie S.

Yelp
What is this so-called "battered fish taco"? It doesn't even taste like fish -- more like a frozen fish patty. At over $6 a taco, it's definitely not worth it.
google avatar

Lena C.

Yelp
Sunbow sunbow sunbow...this is quite a disappointment. I remember coming here when they first opened and it being my pride and joy of Mexican food. There was always a "Which Lolitas is the best? Telegraph? Bonita or Sunbow?" Well, as a person who used to go to lolitas often and always recommended Lolitas for their delicious CA burritos, I now make it a point to mention to avoid Sunbow's (and SDSU) location because of this. This is NOT a California Burrito. This is a french fry burrito sprinkled with a little bit of carne asada. If i didnt take these all the way home (15 miles north), i would have come back and returned these. I spent 37 dollars for 3 burritos. 37 USD for 18% carne asada, 12% shredded cheese, sour cream on just the bottom half of the burrito and the majority of the burrito was nothing but white lightly cooked french fries. This is undeniably theft and false advertisement. If i wanted a french fry burrito, i would go to McDonalds. Bonita is still a good choice but I've had this issue a few times already that I'm starting my search for another restaurant that isn't trying to pull one under me. Avoid Sunbow location.

Yelp
Wanted a chile relleno burrito last night but they didnt have any. A Mexican restaurant with no chile rellenos! WTH!!!

Ur U.

Yelp
Tried to call in an order and was placed on hold twice, when answered a staff hung up and I had to call again. I had to wait for 30 minutes to place an order. When I tried to call back the phone was answered and quickly sent to hold without being told I was being sent to hold or explained anything. I proceeded to drive Lolita's and when I arrived the restaurant had only a handful of customers and tables were dirty.
google avatar

Mike Y.

Yelp
Best taco shop in San Diego. Family owned and operated since I was a kid. My favorites are the California Burrito, Chicken Chimichanga and Mixed burrito. It's the first thing I eat anytime when I get home from any trip.
google avatar

Jose C.

Yelp
After trying various Mexican fast food spots around SD, I can confidently say this spot is one of the best. Their beans are amongst the best. The Salsas are top tier. They could be better with their phone customer service. But the food taste and price makes it worth the 5 stars imo.
google avatar

Brianna B.

Yelp
Lolitas has my heart. Any day that I eat lolitas is a good day. Was out of town for a few years and every time I came back, my first stop was Lolitas. The food is always so good, the service is quick. The fries, the chips, the burritos, the zanahorias!

Elio E.

Yelp
Ordered on their kiosk what I thought were 2 Cali-burritos and got carne asada instead. No big deal. When asked to make them Cali's I got the "we can't - you have to pay for 2 new burritos." Requested them and paying the extra ingredients and they said they couldn't and if they did, SUPER DISAPPOINTING RESPONSE was "we will lose money". Wtf. I've been coming here since the late 90's and I'm sure they have screwed up my order many times or forgotten items. And they couldn't make this right!? I even requested to make the Cali's by giving them an extra $20 on top of the $23.27 I already paid and they just simply said no. I guess that is how you treat a customer that has supported your business for about 30 years. Nice job Lolita's "L" Street.
google avatar

Lucia N.

Yelp
This is our family's "go to" Mexican restaurant since it's nearby our home. I always recommend their carne asada fries, breakfast burritos, and their California burrito. Call in and pick up would be the best during dinner times if you're going here. The restaurant itself is small and situated next to 711 and other small shops. Parking is a bit tough depending on the time you show up.
google avatar

Latasha H.

Yelp
Good food! A little pricey. This Lolita's is located in the same parking lot as Canada steak burger and 7-11. A little disappointed, the last few times, my food has felt like it was rushed and thrown together. We ordered the California burrito, beef rolled taco combo plate and carne asada burrito. The quality and quantity of food has definitely change over the years, along with the prices. Good customer service. Overall good taco shop. Not my 1st choice but not my last.
google avatar

Rodrigo G.

Yelp
I never leave reviews, but this deserves to be seen. Picture speaks for itself, pretty much 90 percent fries, and half raw... very much trash. I wish I would've taken a picture of the 3 rolled tacos I got too.. half guac, half sour cream with no cheese. It was absolutely shit! Lolitas has definitely lowered quality and increased prices.
google avatar

Richard J.

Yelp
Save yourself the time and money, just go to Taco Bell. This is the infamous Lolita's?! Also, they charge extra for a side of chips on top of the outrageous prices. Completely ridiculous.

Daniel G.

Yelp
Love/hate relationship this place is a staple and the food is good and that's why it's always busy. There's some things that they need to fix like their hot sauce containers suck and then they don't want to give you the prepackaged ones for some reason. The customer service sucks most the time and the wait is long.(you can call it in though) they need to put the "customer first" more and this place would be a gem

Jonathan G.

Yelp
Employee Alex was great while being harassed by some annoying customer that ordered wrong while I was there. Customer name was Sergio. Guy was way too sensitive. Handled it better than I would've.

cd r.

Yelp
SERVICE!!! We drove from La Mesa to Chula Vista for the potato tacos. We ordered 3 of the 2 taco plates and the 5 rolled tacos. Waited 20 minutes, then they very nonchalantly told they were out of potato tacos! Why were we not told this when we ordered??? I told them they should have said something and the two cashiers could not be bothered to care about their eye rolling, hand waving me off, and plain rudeness. Their excuse, "the cooks didn't tell us until they were ready to make your order". A sorry would go a long way. I think I remember why we stopped coming here!!! I am scared to even taste the food... oh, well the service just ruined it all.

Josue G.

Yelp
Great food, horrible service especially when calling in orders, they place you on hold for five -10 min most of the time even if they are busy or not, I've walked into place while still on phone waiting for order after ten min only to see it empty and staff chit chatting away. They also don't care enough to hand you salsas, they make you serve yourself which is a mess since everyone has to fill their sauce containers.

Jessica Sanchez ..

Yelp
Saddest carne asada burrito I've ever had and seen. Burrito was 40% flour tortilla. You definitely do NOT get your bang for your buck here.

Ian V.

Yelp
Haven't been to this place in 5 years but not coming back again, lol can't even make a bistro to the right way! Luzita's that's 5 min away is better in quality and presentation. Make sure to better the quality of your food as most of it tasted like it's been there sitting.
google avatar

M D.

Yelp
¡Bueno! Carne asada fries (large size)-meat tender and with everything combine makes for a delicious meaty and cheesy meal. The fries could of been cooked longer for a crispy outside and soft inside. They seemed underwhelming. The large size is good for two people. Carne asada nachos- meat tender and chips sturdy enough to carry the load. The large size is packed full and can be shared by two people. Service- friendly and knowledgeable Ambiance- modern with seating inside and outside. Plenty of tv screens to catch the latest matches and games, but for some reason they were unable to air the playoff games for basketball. I probably will eat here again and try the rolled tacos.
google avatar

Ariz D.

Yelp
Okay, okayyyy Brown Guacamole coming your way, Lolita's is serving it a little bit gray, But that's what i get for wanting a cheat meal on a mid-day. Done. That's my haiku for my carne asada fries at Lolita's. I've never been a true fan, but living in East CV, there's only so many fast Mexican options that don't use nacho cheese as their "cheese". I'll post about that one later. Anyways, disappointed but I shared them with the husband because what's a girl gon' do? Throw it away?! Beware of soggy fries, brown guacamole and not worth the high price tag.
google avatar

Karina W.

Yelp
"Patience is the essence of fine Mexican food" is their motto and they know delicious Mexican food. This place is a Chula Vista staple for a reason. It's hard to find a time when this place isn't super busy, but they have thee best Carne Asada fries, California burrito, bean and cheese burritos, and red salsa. Their staff is nice enough, nothing to note. Sometimes it's impossible to call in an order, so it's easier to just go pick up. It's always clean inside and it's nice that they took out the tables from the middle so there's a place for people to line up to order and they have some chairs on the side for people to wait for their food. This is my favorite taco shop of all time and I'll be coming here for as long as they're open.
google avatar

Leeon A.

Yelp
Expensive and their burritos are small. The food is always cold but when it is hot, it's good.
google avatar

Susana R.

Yelp
Delicious!! All food always fresh and tasty! I usually order the large carne asada fries which is shareable! The fries I order extra crunchy! I love how they use real guacamole. Queso cotija, and carne asada always juicy and tender plus full of flavor! I also order they beef tacos that are my favorite! Not only are their the lowest priced than other taco shops.. they are fully loaded with shredded beef, shredded cheese and lettuce. Absolutely delicious, it is worth the wait because everything it's fresh and made to order. Ambience it's nice only wish it was a bigger dinning area so I can eat there... also wish they had a drive through because I could drive by and pick up dinner quicker! Other than that it's a win win every time I go..highly recommend!
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
I grew up on this food and location since the 80s! Started with mixed burritos and rolled tacos. Then discovered California Nachos, then Carne Asada burritos, and now my favorite California fries and burritos! The best taco shop in SD!
google avatar

Ron A.

Yelp
Food quality is good. Service is bad. I spent over $50 plus tip on dinner for family. Ordered plain street tacos for little one. They got it wrong after a long wait. No apology as if it was my fault. Took awhile to remake plain tacos and it was sitting on counter for a while too until I brought it up that I was still waiting. Again, no apology. Wow.... I guess you don't need my business. Message received.
google avatar

Solerie A.

Yelp
Never again will I come here! It took over 45 minutes to order rolled tacos and a Cali burrito, and a specialty plate. I'd be better off going through a drive through somewhere else. Crowded yes! I found that the tacos and rolled tacos to be hard to bite.
google avatar

Zamira C.

Yelp
California burrito is more like a French fry burrito. Very disappointing to see that it has so little meat. It's not even a 1/2 and 1/2.
google avatar

Juzenne C.

Yelp
Lolita's has always had a solid place to go for carne asada chips and fries. The burritos are pretty good but I think I prefer them at other shops. However, Lolita's definitely has the best chips and fries. Their service is fast if you call ahead, and the salsa bar always has good options to choose from. We came on time and ordered there and was informed the wait would be 40 mins and there were a ton of people inside so I understood why. Call ahead to make it easier bc that's what we do now :)
google avatar

Dan V.

Yelp
Just good food and they prepare fast and the place is always spotless but parking can be a little bit of a challenge especially at night

Sonia D.

Yelp
Such good food every time! They usually are busy but recommend calling it ahead of time. They have fast service and the green salsa is great with rolled tacos!
google avatar

Monica A.

Yelp
The service was good but unfortunately the food was not. My family and I have frequented Lolita's for many years and have always enjoyed the food there so I feel this was a fluke. We ordered shrimp burritos and OMG, all we got was lettuce. Pico de gallo and the shrimp. It was a soggy, bland mess. Well spent almost $50 (with tip) for 3 burritos and I wouldn't pay $5 for that same meal. I'm not sure what went wrong and if I'll ever go back but the staff was nice, so there's that.
google avatar

Ades C.

Yelp
I just had the large arne asada fries and they were 10/10 on flavor and seasoning 10/10 on fries well cooked and crunchy (although the fries could be thicker 10/10 on tender meat with no fat 10/10 on the salsa guacamole & cheese I highly recommend this place.
google avatar

Yesenia N.

Yelp
Love visiting this beautiful place for breakfast when I'm in the area. It's located next to a 7/11 and shell gas station. There is plenty of parking available and limited indoor seating. The restaurant is very clean inside and offers restrooms to paying customers. I ordered my usual the famous potato eggs and cheese burrito with sour cream and guacamole inside. It's very delicious and so tasty as a home meal burrito. The staff is always so outgoing and friendly. The pollo asada salad with creamy dressing is a must have very fresh and delicious. Overall another pleasant experience highly recommend a visit.
google avatar

Calley G.

Yelp
F*cking DELICIOUS! Found this gem on the way to North Island credit union amphitheater on the way to a show. Great location, right off the freeway! There was a huge line inside and tons of people waiting. ORDER AHEAD for pickup! Great prices and delicious food! Tried the potato taquitos with guacamole and cheese and as a vegetarian they were AMAZING! Fixed my craving for some good taquitos. The best thing here is their sauces! The verde sauce they give on the side... I could drink it! And the rojo sauce it equally as good and a little spicy which was a great addition to tacos and burritos!
google avatar

Lili C.

Yelp
I loved my burrito service was so fast and they let us order even when they were about to close and they weren't mean about it Normally wouldn't do that but we were so hungry. TY

Cortney A.

Yelp
You can spend $11 on a Cali Burrito.. what your gonna get is French fries smothered in sour cream burrito. What a scam.
google avatar

Gerardo A.

Yelp
The must unorganized restaurant I've been to that serves Mexican food took half hour to get two bean and cheese burritos and one chile Riano burrito with no apologies ever. This is not the first time this has happened. Dummy me for coming back don't waste your time it's not even worth it barely put any beans in the burrito and the chili. Rena was cold after half an hour of getting my food.
google avatar

Chrissy F.

Yelp
Whoever the cook was on 9/20 @ 12:25 pm when I called in a phone order for a California burrito with a crispy tortilla... You chef are an angel ! That burrito was cooked to perfection! All ingredients evenly distributed in my burrito. Not to mention the fact that the cheese was perfectly melted and consistent all throughout. This is the only location that understands the words crispy tortilla cause at Sunbow the cashiers always look confused when I ask. This location and kearny mesa know what's up. The woman working the register was kind and professional. I asked for 3 salsas, limes and a serrano pepper and she delivered with no hesitation ! (Sunbow is dramatic when you ask for anything) Thank you !!

Linda C.

Yelp
The food is good but if you get carne asada fries you're paying 10+ dollars for just fries.. same with burritos or anything else.. I understand inflation but we're also paying more for nothing ..

Adriana F.

Yelp
Nothing has changed since my last time coming here!! Three strikes! I am out!! It was terrible I ordered two carne asada fries. Hardly any guacamole or cheese and the fries were very cold couldn't even melt the cheese . On top of that I ordered a shredded beef taco and they gave me a potato taco when I complained he said they would redo it after standing there five minutes and seeing other orders get sent out I canceled the taco. I was told they cannot issue a refund that only the manager can WTH!!! Now rest of food is cold and they owe me money'!!check your order before you leave. Not worth the 47.00

Lisa M.

Yelp
This place has gone to sh**! The customer service is bad ! Employees are rude and lazy , no customer service what so ever ! Employees at the register look stoned , employees take their brakes where customers are wanting to dine in and eat , on their phones it's already bad enough that they only have 3 tables to dine in . And you would think when a customer has a platter of food in their hands waiting for a table they would have the Courtesy to get up but nope ! They sit there and continue to take their brakes . We asked for salsa on a to go order and the high looking kid refused to give us some and proceeded to tell us " grab it from the bar " in back if you " wow never coming back here again . Talk to your employees Lolita's on telegraph ! On another occasion it was 8:40 pm when we got our food and they asked told us we couldn't eat our food inside anymore because they close at 9pm. ! Wow just wow , do better Lolita's
google avatar

Willette B.

Yelp
Terrible all around. Rude people here. DON'T EAT HERE. Food is gross. No authentic. Cheap meat. Cheap ingredients. Look at the pictures. Again don't eat here. Would give no star if it was an option.
google avatar

Dave N.

Yelp
The service at the sunbow location is terrible. Online ordering they say 20 minutes but what they mean is an hour except unable to accurately communicate timeframes and a who gives a shit attitude
google avatar

Mitzy O.

Yelp
Spend your money somewhere else. You will not be getting your money's worth here. The owner is stingy and charging outrageous prices for a meal.

Edwin B.

Yelp
So they gave me the wrong order. came back to pick up the right order. when I did they still made me wait 30 minute. this place is starting to suck
