Beloved Stillwater Bartender Has Died | Eater Twin Cities

"At Stillwater’s Lolito, Ef was a warm presence behind the bar, known for incredible drink-mixing skills and a convivial personality that made any night spent sitting on a stool in front of him memorable; that same address later became Lolito after previously housing Pearl & the Thief." - Joy Summers

Really great experience! The waiter was very polite and professional. We had the Queso, Burrito Bowl, and Quesabirra tacos (with lamb). Food came out HOT which is so rare these days. The drinks were fantastic as well.

As a first time visitor to Stillwater, I was enamored by the warmest welcome from Bartender Derek Malchow, whose personality boomed as bright as the fabulous ambiance and delectable dinner! The salsa trio, guacamole, and queso fundido paired with specialty crafted margaritas comprised the perfect nighttime nosh. Overall service was unparalleled, as Misty (MJ) delighted us with her vibrant and gregarious charm, and General Manager Kimberly put the punctuation mark on this exemplary experience. Kara Leigh from TPA will be back for a savory snack soon!

We had a great experience here! Our server was so friendly and attentive. Great drinks menu. I highly recommend the nachos!!

Google
My experience at Lolito Cantina was a mix of highs and lows. I accidentally left my driver’s license in the car, so I wasn’t able to order the drink I wanted. Unfortunately, the server didn’t offer me any alternatives, which was disappointing. On top of that, we had to wait a long time to place our order, which added to the frustration. Another downside was that the menu didn’t indicate gluten-free options, which would have been helpful. That being said, the food itself was absolutely delicious! It’s the best Mexican cuisine I’ve had in the U.S. so far. I wasn’t a fan of the duck dish, as it had too much chocolate for my taste. However, I really enjoyed the drink called Tepache—just a heads-up, it’s very sour! The service was polite and attentive overall, despite the initial hiccups.

Google
Kim, at the bar, was amazing! Very helpful and friendly. The Lolo burger was decent. Chips n x3 Salsa's were excellent. The House Marg was pretty good as well, especially being on tap. Nice decor, and obviously a solid selection of Agave distillate's.

Lovely food. Tried the fried lamb and chicken tacos - was delicious. And must try the Churros Potatoes!

Best Margaritas I've had, first time i had fish tacos and it was fantastic 10/10. Bartender and servers were a good conversation.

Google
Beautiful fall weather for a patio meal. Manager was welcoming, waitress was lovely and prompt. Food was on point. We had the guacamole and carnitas burrito bowl. We loved the spicy salsa.

Yelp
Overall, the food was decent. I'm giving three stars because of the experience when we arrived. We were told there would be a 20-minute wait, which was fine, and we signed the waiting list to receive a text when our table was ready. After 30 minutes of waiting outside, my husband went in to check, since we hadn't seen many people leaving and noticed several open tables. He was told we could be seated right away, and that there had been system issues--but there was no apology. The waiter was very kind, and the food itself was fine. The ambiance was clean, inviting, and included outdoor seating. Overall, we likely wouldn't return, but if the initial experience had been handled better, this could have been a four-star review.

Yelp
Great lunch deals, awesome guac and fresh margs (or mocktails) Loved the lunch taco options- all were great! Service was good Ambiance was relaxed

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick bite and found a new favorite. Lolito has a great menu so it was difficult to choose. We needed something on the lighter side. We went with barbacoa octopus which was smoky and a touch spice with some mild jalapeños and the elote. We finished it all off with some guacamole and were perfectly satiated. It was quiet on this Monday at lunch and I would highly recommend. Sorry I forgot to take pictures before we ate it all.

Yelp
Came here with my mom and sister for dinner Saturday night and it was great! We got guacamole and chips along with the sweet potato tacos and the chicken tacos. The portions are pretty good for location and amount of food, but they've made tacos build your own with the ingredients on a plate. It is nice since you can decide how much you want or what ingredients you prefer though! Parking is tricky since it's downtown but if you don't mind walking a little bit it's not bad!

Yelp
We went here for lunch yesterday with a big-ish group. It was 4 adults 3 under 2. We sat at a corner booth which had plenty of space! We started off with some verde salsa and guac. The chips were SO good they were the perfect fluff and crunch! I had the chicken tacos which was perfect for lunch. If you don't like the tortillas, it's great because they come separate and you build your own. The rice was also very good...had a little bit of a kick which was different. There were two waitresses who were excellent. They have their recommendations which are always helpful!

Yelp
Cute dining area and outdoor patio! Service was good, but took awhile to come out. I had the Mahi tacos and thought they were good, but my sister thought they were too fishy. The tortillas are homemade and delicious!

Yelp
Wendy was absolutely amazing! Up beat, stylish, a vibe. Right on the downtown strip and easy to get to. The flavors are fresh, service prompt, food solid. What more could you ask for? I had an old fashioned (I know, not fitting for the cuisine but really well crafted) and chicken burrito bowl. So full of flavor and delish. Highly recommend!

Yelp
Needed a quick bite and got it. Always a win with local, sustainable and healthy food choices! Salmon tacos specialty, beens and rice and heritage tomato salad . . Excellent. Good service though took a while. Love this spot!

Yelp
We absolutely loved Lolito! We stopped here with friends for a late lunch after a walk and was able to get patio seating straight away on a Sunday. It was the perfect place for phenomenal, delicious food and drinks on a summer day with friends! Casual and SO good! Our original server didn't seem to be in the best mood, missed one of drinks and then got all our bills wrong, however their shift ended and a new server took over who made every thing better! We really appreciated the new server who was attentive and very pleasant! We'd definitely come back!

Yelp
You can't beat some of their weekday specials! The taco Tuesday special specifically - for the price ($5/taco), quality, and quantity of meat it is as good as it gets. Today I tried a smoked pork shoulder taco and a smoked brisket taco. The brisket was my favorite on my last visit but the pork might have it beat- there's significant heat from the black habanero but it perfectly brings out the flavor of the pork. Staff is super friendly and welcoming. Perfect cozy spot to swing into on a weekday when Stillwater isn't as busy!

Yelp
Stopped in Lolito for some appetizers with friends and they did not disappoint. Service was excellent & we were never left waiting. The roasted garlic guacamole is a must have! We also ordered the Elote Queso and salsa! All so delicious!

Tracy R.

Yelp
Let's start with the fact that you can make reservations using their online system, but you can't amend the existing reservation. You need to call the restaurant - which I needed to do. The person who answered the phone could not figure out my name or my reservation and was just plain rude. The atmosphere is loud. While I do like the food, the service could be better. I was celebrating my birthday, but the staff made it a horrible night.
google avatar

Sam B.

Yelp
I stopped into Lolito for a happy hour drink and some appetizers and it was great! Although this restaurant is on the smaller side, I was seated outside on their patio right away. The waitress was very attentive and brought water right away, which was great since it was a hot summer day! I ordered the happy hour Lolito margarita and it was delicious! Not too sweet, limey, and just the right amount of salt on the rim. I also ordered the classic guacamole and the mixed mushroom taco. Both were fantastic and I highly recommend the mushroom taco!! I can't wait to visit Lolito again so I can try more menu items!

Yelp
Fantastic upscale cantina in downtown Stillwater! Had a great bartender and quick service when I stopped in for a solo dinner. Phenomenal homemade chips and a wide salsa selection. Kick butt griddled tacos and upscale sides. Plus a great cocktail menu. Hard to believe this only has 3.5 stars on Yelp. It's a must stop if you're looking for a fresh take on upscale Mexican

Yelp
I went to Lolito Cantina for my boyfriend's birthday last night. This was our second time trying it as we try to stay away from downtown Stillwater due to the parking nightmare. It was difficult to find parking, we circled the block about 4 times before finding a spot. Thankfully that was the only negative part of the night. We were instantly welcomed when we walked in and got to choose where we sat. The restaurant was pretty empty which makes no sense based on the quality of the food. Do yourself a favor and order an appetizer. We got guacamole to start and had to add an order of queso after trying the chips. I would walk across the state for those chips! SOOOOO YUMMY!! The burrito bowl was the perfect amount of food and the margarita was delicious! They use these fancy ice cubes so it's just a single piece of ice in the drink rather than a bunch of tiny pieces which was cool and so much fancier than I am used to. They sadly do not offer any deals for the birthday but the food was reasonably priced and the service was phenomenal. 100/10 across the board! Can't recommend this local business enough. Definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in Stillwater.

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday around 3PM when the weather was beautiful and Stillwater was bustling. We had to wait a few minutes for our group of 4 to be seating, but it was faster than the original wait time we were quoted. We were seated and someone came by to took our drinks order. Our server was pretty cold (maybe it was just an off day), but we were able to get drinks. We ordered beer and spicy margaritas and they came as expected. A while later we got to order food. We ordered a small guac with chips and let me tell you...regardless of the guac size we got a TON of chips. Several of us ordered tacos, and since there was no mention of how many tacos came with an order (it is two), some members were still pretty hungry after. I would strongly recommend getting sides. My partner and I got an order of tacos and a burrito bowl to share, but I was bummed to see that the burrito bowl was lined with a flour tortilla (I am gluten-free for health reasons). Unfortunately, I was only able to eat the two tacos. However, the food was good and I'd be willing to give the place another try.

Yelp
Our server was a very nice young lady. Always attentive and because of our audience, good at honing in on what we liked. The food was very good. Which is why we are back a year later with the same fiends. Would say it's a fresh approach and pretty creative. Not for folks who like heavy greasy laden Mexican food.

Yelp
This was my first visit, I ordered a steak bowl. It had good flavors but I would say the portion size was on the small side, I also had quite a few pieces of grizzle that I had to spit out. The service was fast and friendly, I have no complaints. The restaurant itself was more lowkey and open, not quite as vibey as its sister restaurants.

Yelp
Lolito Cantina in Stillwater, Minnesota, offers a gourmet take on Southern Mexican and Latin American cuisine. The menu features organic heirloom masa tortillas, fresh guacamole, and a variety of tacos, including options like pork asado and pork shoulder. Their bar boasts an impressive selection of tequilas, mezcals, and craft cocktails, with creatively named drinks. The atmosphere is vibrant and welcoming, making it a great spot for both casual lunches and evening gatherings. Lolito Cantina is a must-visit destination for a memorable dining experience.

Yelp
Food and service were great. I have kids that are picky and the waitress was pleasant and answered all of our questions very well. The food was excellent as always.
google avatar

Kimberly B.

Yelp
They moved to a new location (same street) but bigger venue. I want to mention that since last reviews talk about it being small. I think they moved into the old Marx steakhouse place. Much more seating. The food is SO SO good and the drinks are worth it. The elotes corn dish will stop all conversation because it gives an 'omg' delicious whoosh. We park up the hill and walk down. Try to sit at the bar to shorten your wait. If you have to wait go check out a cool shop - you are in historic Stillwater after all. I am going back for more right now. Why not you? Nom nom nom!

Yelp
Cute Mexican restaurant in downtown Stillwater. It's owned by the same owners of Stillwater Proper and Lolo. On this particular day we popped in for a bite while it was raining outside. We ordered chips and the salsa verde...it's delish. Hubby ordered an bunless burger that was absolutely incredible which isn't the first thought you think of when you go to a Mexican restaurant. I ordered shrimp tacos which were just okay. I do have to say that it did take over 30 mins for us to get our food which was a little frustrating with no updates from our server. The other thing is that the place was not busy at all cause it was 3pm in the afternoon so I'm not sure why it did take so long. Maybe they forgot about us. I was also sad to find out they discontinued the ceviche appetizer option on the menu.

Yelp
First time here and came during a very slow time after work on a Monday so it was basically empty. The one server behind the bar area was extremely nice and was expectedly very prompt with our service! Place is a really neat vibe and I could see it being a great place for a date night or night out with friends for dinner. We were just killing time so we only ordered some margaritas and chips but we were blown away by both! We were recommended the Chiltomate salsa and I can without a doubt say that it was the best salsa I've ever had. I would go back for the salsa alone. It had a perfect balance of garlic and habanero that was intoxicating. Will definitely be back!

Yelp
This place is off the hook! Sat out back on the patio. Everything is right about this place. The pork shoulder tacos were the best I've ever had and trust me when I say this because this guy has eaten a LOT of tacos in my 54 years Black beans and lime rice were perfect compliment / side. I can't wait to come back here and try other menu items!! Service was perfect as well. This place rocks!

Aimee K.

Yelp
Really good, "hip" Mexican food. Not at all your typical Mexican platters with rice and beans. Exotic flavors, lovely plates and flat wear. Good mixed drinks. Will definitely go again.

David L.

Yelp
The service and ambiance were great! But my kid ordered the quesadilla with rice but they gave her the quesadilla with fries. But other wise pretty good. 5 stars!!!!!

Ashley C.

Yelp
Food is out of this world!! Love the home made tortillas. Margaritas are excellent. The quality of the meat is very good.
google avatar

Shannon K.

Yelp
We sat in the bar area during a happy hour. Margaritas and guacamole were very good. We will go back again next time we are in Stillwater.

Claire W.

Yelp
Food was good, service was not! Hostess was very rude and condescending and that killed the vibe

Yelp
I have never in my life been treated so poorly by any bartender in my LIFE. I Should have stayed to talk to the manager. That lady must be having the worst day of her life. Never again woudI walk thru that door again. She should be embarrassed.

Frank A.

Yelp
The drinks were shitty and overpriced, the service was exceptionally slow considering how empty it was, and the food? Let's say we never got to the food, because they ran out of basic shit a restaurant of the Tex-Mex persuasion should have: beans and meat. No joke. It's also worth mentioning they don't have chips and salsa like most other cantinas I've been to, and they charge an extra tax for the subpar service. I'm actually glad they ran out of basic ingredients, because they pissed me off so much with their shitty service my meal was already ruined before it started, and I didn't want to be there, so there it is- thanks for sucking. On the plus side, I went right across the street to a burger joint that was 4x fuller and the service was also 4x faster, and with much better beer options. And from looking at the other reviews, I should've heeded the warnings- which also look like poor service, and marginal food. Screw me once, shame on me. Never again.

Kaleb W.

Yelp
Called ahead to see if they could fit a table of 7. Person who answered said it was no problem. We showed up and were met with a look of disdain for even considering showing up with a party of 7.... Dining room was practically empty. We were seated and the service only got worse from there. The Asian male waiter came out and started to give our party some serious attitude. It was because of him and his absence of customer service that we decided to leave. Would never visit this place, LoLo American Kitchen, or Stillwater proper as they are all owned by the same person and this isn't the first time I've heard horror stories about these establishments.
google avatar

Hank R.

Yelp
God has this place gone downhill!!!!! When they first opened they were very consistent with their dishes. Service was good/ apparently they have made all the money they needed and now their goal is running it into the ground! Food was uneatable! Uncooked chicken bowl. The blandest salsa on earth (basically ketchup with cilantro. Chips were fresh out of Taco Bell's dumpster! Gross!!!! If you find yourself in Stillwater and are walking by Lolitos, KEEP WALKING!!!!!!

Sam S.

Yelp
Expensive Tex-Mex We are big fans of Mexican food and have travelled to many parts of Mexico many times, so when the menu mentioned Oaxaca cuisine we thought it would be up to the mark! But it was basically Jazzed up American mexican food. The tacos were decent but the tacos were stuffed with cheese. The Mexican street corn and smoked salsa were worth a try. The service was slow despite not being busy. I would suggest if you are in Stillwater and want some Tex-mex might be worth a stop.

Becky V.

Yelp
Absolutely loved this restaurants From the service, yo the friendly staff to the food, everything was excellent.
google avatar

Eric S.

Yelp
Great food and Margaritas. We were visiting from out of state and looking for some Mexican food our first night. There is only one review on this place so we weren't sure. But after driving through town, we like the looks of it and give it a try. We are familiar with the New Age style eating but one of our group wasn't familiar with anything but the standard family, Mexican restaurant. The waiter had to explain some of the food options to him. But he was very patient and did a great job. The food we ended up getting tasted great. And the margaritas were very good. We would definitely go back if we were in town longer.
google avatar

Ann C.

Yelp
Delicious variety of margaritas. Yummy street tacos and very fresh guacamole. Now in the old Marx location, which is cute.

Deena B.

Yelp
All the Foods is pricy when there are no sides included. Not even basics like rice/beans lettuce. No chips/salsa to the table. (Guess I'm used to that being customary) Tacos are super small & won't let you mix different types of protein on same order. Why? Brisket with bacon was a burger with bacon pieces so small we needed to ask where it was. No corona beer which was weird for a Mexican inspired theme. Burrito bowl was cold Quesadilla was over cooked & lacked significant ingredients. Plus 4% service fee because the restaurant won't pay their staff is odd. Pay your ppl ! Don't expect us to. Then ask for gratuity as well? No reason they had this many issues. Great location, great opportunities with all the walking traffic. Sad the meal was disappointing. Appreciated they did remove the charge for some of the Items we didn't eat... but I'd rather have the meal prepared properly & pay my bill. I don't want businesses to lose out, so maybe work on those areas.

Traci T.

Yelp
Bartender was more interested in chatting with her visiting friends at the bar than tending to customers. When we sat at the bar she didn't greet us, ask for a drink order, just put menus down. Finally asked us what we wanted so we ordered an app and drinks. App was great but left due to poor service.

John K.

Yelp
Great food and drinks ! Been here twice already while we are here Stillwater for the past few months.

Jack B.

Yelp
Excellent food and service! The cada día (hamburger) was superb, as well as the beans and rice. What a great place!
