The rating is not overhyped. I am impressed with how good this pie is. Then again, maybe I should not, being that the phone was off the hook with takeout orders and Barstool Sports came here and praised it.
Needless to say, the staff knew about the latter and said to me, "Don't just take their word for it, make your own opinion!"
No need to worry, I definitely will.
First off, I arrived at 4:45 pm, 15 minutes prior to their official opening time. Due in part to the nasty and cold weather, the staff was nice enough to let me inside and sit at one of their tables. I would have waited the extra 15 minutes if I had to, but they took my order and told me to be patient as they were loaded with orders for pickup. One Margherita pie with half sausage for here, and a small calzone to go (their calzone is supposed to be amazing). Funny, I got a near identical order at Lucali. Is a trend in the works?
While waiting, I could not help but hear, and appreciate, the 80's rock ballads that were being pumped through the sound system. I do not know; it adds a nice touch to hear something other than the modern day crap or the standards of yesteryear to try and make people feel they are in for a trendy, or more intimate experience.
Roughly 30 minutes later, I am rewarded with a sharp and gorgeous looking pie. I took a bite and immediately knew this is something special, really special.
The cheese and sauce are like a beautiful married couple. They taste timeless and I found the pie gets better with time, rather than the opposite of other pies I have tasted. The artisanal, wood-fired crust is great too. Some parts are slightly over cooked, but for the most part it is a great crust. The sausage is decent but did not blow me away. It did not add much to the pie, but it did not take much away from it. Despite it, I do not regret getting it on the pie. I polished off all but one slice of my pie.
I would also like to point out the staff. They worked hard, and made sure I was taken care off. It was like going back in time to a period of the kind of character Bay Ridge once was, and hopefully can still retain a bottle of that kind of character.
Thank you Lombardo's for a great pie and I hope to come back for more.
