The 13 Best Cancún Restaurants | Eater

"El Pocito has been a classic lunch spot in Cancún since 1988. Originally from Valladolid in the neighboring state of Yucatán, self-taught chef Manuela Uch oversees the kitchen, where she prepares dishes with Yucatecan soul, including one of the area’s most famous renditions of cochinita pibil (pork stewed with achiote). Look for chaya, a local shrub that’s deeply integrated into the region’s cuisine; it shows up in everything from the agua frescas to tamales, lending a flavor similar to chard with an herbal edge. It was our first time trying local food, and it was a great new experience for us. We really enjoyed it. The staff may not speak much English, but basic communication was possible, and they were friendly. As this is a local restaurant, you shouldn’t expect the same level of service as tourist restaurants. The dishes might be a bit too strongly seasoned for our taste, but overall the food was good, and the meat was tender and well cooked.

We came here for lunch. We had tamales, some tacos, and a plate of cochinita pibil. The taste was very authentic, so were the costumes and the decoration. We had a difficulty to speak in Spanish, but there was one girl that served us in English. The price was also cheap, while the quality was superb.

Not worth the visit—close or not This spot came recommended by locals as a place to try authentic, homemade food using local ingredients. Unfortunately, the experience fell flat from start to finish. Service was disengaged—no welcome, no recommendations, and no confirmation of our order. It felt like we were just supposed to know what to do. A simple order-at-the-counter system would’ve worked better. The food didn’t redeem the experience. I ordered the Cochinita, which came with tortillas and refried beans—the beans were runny and lacked any real flavor. The chicken version came with a side of thick spaghetti, which felt totally out of place and didn’t pair well. The Sopa de Lima tasted like hot water with lemon—completely bland. And one small but important note: if you do get hot food, eat it fast—the fans around the seating area cool it down quickly, which doesn’t help when the food’s already lukewarm or lacking in flavor. Despite the high number of reviews, it seems more geared toward locals who may have a nostalgic connection to the style of cooking. For visitors, it’s simply not worth the effort. The surrounding neighborhood feels a bit sketchy, and the overall experience just didn’t justify the trip. Whether you’re nearby or thinking about going out of your way—don’t. Not worth the visit, close or not.

Great restaurant! They serve breakfast from 8am to 12pm and the rest of the time they have a daily menu. The pulled pork was really tasty - I would get it more often for sure. They have some desserts in the fridge next to the counter. We got a banana pudding with tapioca - nice, slightly sweet and calmed down the spiciness of the main course 😄 The prices for main dishes are around 170-200 pesos.

We had several plates for a family style lunch to try a bit of everything. The food was delicious, the breakfast menu looked even better and hope to return one day for their full breakfast. It’s worth the trip for authentic local food!

The food is good but lacks strong flavors. The tamale (4/5) was the best thing I had here. The cochinata pibil was tender but lacked strong flavor (3.5/5) but the tortillas were delicious. The papadzules (3/5) was good but again not too much flavor. Service was super nice tho

Small restaurant but they serve great food. They have fresh guava juice which is a must-try. Grilled banana on one of the egg dishes we ordered was amazing taste. For breakfast/brunch, the divorced eggs was the best among all we ordered. Service was very fast too.
