Yelp
I finally got my butt to Lone Star after living in Utah for quite some time now and hearing all about this place. This place is a classic, much talked about spot. I recently saw that Antoni and Tan from Queer Eye came here, and as one of their biggest fans, I had to check out the hype for myself!
Let's start with the things I loved:
- it was packed! You know you're about to enter a great, much-loved restaurant when both the indoor seating is jam packed with few open seating areas, AND the drive thru line is out on the street.
- The service was amazing. We ordered guacamole and a taco combo each, which came with a taco, rice, and beans. The order of guacamole was on the counter waiting for us before we had even paid. The rest of the order was out quickly - we waited probably less than 10 mins.
- The guacamole was delicious, the chips were thick and salty. There's a salsa bar with a few options of mild/medium/hot.
- The inside and the outdoor patio is fun and funky - lots of great colors, decorations, a car outside with stickers all over it. It's a really fun vibe and the energy inside is amazing.
- Even on a very busy night we weren't waiting long.
The vegetarian options were lacking, which I knew before stopping by, but I was still determined to check this place out for myself! From what I know about this place, they're known more for their meat/fish tacos as their speciality. The veggie tacos didn't have much flavor to them and left much to be desired. The rice and beans in the combo plate were delicious, but I wished there was as much flavor in the tacos as in the rice/beans. I've been told the burritos are the item to check out on the menu, so I'll have to try that out next time I'm in the area.
Would I come back here? Yes - it's a good spot with a simple menu, and clearly they're doing something right to be packed full all night and open for over 20 years. I don't necessarily understand the hype of this place, but I am also a vegetarian and don't eat the items on the menu that they're known for. There are many other places in SLC that have more extensive and flavorful veggie taco options.
My verdict: it's a classic SLC staple that is well known and loved by Utahns, and frequently visited by out of staters as well. It's definitely a place to check off your Utah restaurant bucket list!
