A colorful, decades-old taquería at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon. Its carne adovada and shrimp burritos earned national attention on Food Network, but it’s still very much a locals’ hangout.

Food is always amazing especially the fish of the day and nachos. The half size is plenty for a single person. If you eat there, they usually bring the food to your table. Parking can get full and so can the tables, but it’s still average noise even next to the road.

Google
I don’t know how this place has so many good reviews. Very nice staff but the food was so bad. Me and my friend both got food poisoning within an hour of eating it.. I feel like we wasted our time and money. I don’t remember.. the food didn’t even have taste and I think the meat was definitely old cause it has a shiny rainbow surface on it, idk if you know what I’m talking about.. I’ve had a lot better Mexican food at another place that was this “famous”. The salsa and the guacamole were not good either.. I’ve never seen so much tomato in guacamole as filler instead of avocado. Picture of what we got is attached.. might look good but not worth it with no taste and the aftermath.

Google
Best fish burrito in town! The burrito is huge, so plan on takeaway! Staff is friendly and service is quick. Fresh guacamole and chips are excellent!

Eric Durham

Google
Great authentic Mexican tacos and other food. Just pick how many tacos you want and what meat on each one and they make them with all the right toppings and sauces! They were all very good and the chips and guacamole were delicious. They also have an unlimited salsa bar with different salsas.

Google
I hate to post a 1 star and make this public but for 58.00 bucks this food was terrible. I have been here before and it must be under new management because back in 2014 this place was bomb!!! I ordered the carnitas burrito and I was so disappointed no meat tortilla was cold my wife ordered bean and cheese dip the cheese was not melted we got a simple thing quesadillas and the cheese wasn’t even melted. I could have went somewhere else but I seen the place and said ohh they are good! But definitely not the case this time. The first picture is the carnitas burrito where is the meat? It’s packed with rice and beans and cheese. The second picture is what a burrito should look like

Google
We loved their extensive salsa bar! There were many to choose from. The vibe is super cool as well. We hated that they used store bought tortillas. Tortillas should always be handmade. The slaw on the tacos needed to be sautéed and seasoned as well. It was lacking the authentic Mexican flavors

Google
It’s usually stressful trying to get parking, but it’s all worth it. I’ve tried multiple things here and it’s always great. I love getting their burritos and the tacos are always great. The full sized burrito can feed two large adults, each taco is pretty small. One person would need at least two. Everything seems pretty authentic. A great mexican place in Salt Lake area. Also, it’s a cool location, not great for large groups or people.

Google
Tacos were big and packed. Totally worth the price. Service was fast and ordering easy. Great low key neighborhood atmosphere. Make sure to find parking elsewhere if coming with a group. The drive through option it’s awesome and will try it next time when I’m a hurry. A must try!

Yelp
Stopped here as we were driving through town as we heard this is the best casual Mexican food around. We heard right as this place was amazing. We arrived a little ahead of a huge storm coming in as we drove through it about an hour before. Fun little space that has a drive thru window as well. The cashier was friendly as gave us a few recommendations. They go have a daily fresh fish but I didn't recognize the fish so I ordered a shrimp taco and adovada taco. My son got a shrimp burrito and then we split a chips and guacamole. The chips and guacamole were incredible. The chips were a tad thicker but great crunch and could hold up the large thick scoops of fresh guacamole. The shrimp burrito was enormous as it had marinated shrimp, beans, rice, cabbage, jalapeños and more. Every item was fresh and flavorful. The tacos were both very tasty as well. The tacos and burrito came with a jalapeño crema that was also yummy. They have a little salsa bar with a tomatillo green, jalapeño medium, a hot and pico de gallo. The salsas were all good. We sat on the fun but small patio and then rolled out just before the huge storm hit. We took the rest of the chips and guacamole to go in the car as we were driving north to our next stop. Definitely a place to come back to in the future if we are in SLC again.

Yelp
Lonestar Taqueria absolutely through me for a surprise, I had the Fish Taco and a Carne Adovada Taco--both were really good. I definitely enjoyed the fish taco more, the fish was fresh, breaded and cooked crispy, perfectly paired with the crunchy slaw! While the carne adovada had that rich, flavorful kick that kept me going back for another bite. The tacos are a little pricier but with how much they load it up, it's well worth it!! Their salsas were on point, adding just the right heat and brightness, but the real surprise was the horchata--hands down some of the best I've ever had. Super flavorful, creamy, and refreshing, it tied the whole meal together. On top of the food, the service is quick and the funky atmosphere makes the experience even better. From the sticker-covered car with the shark fin out front and the boots on the fence posts to the colorful décor inside, it's just a fun, laid-back place to enjoy great tacos.

Yelp
We came here after a long day of skiing and were pleased that the portion sizes were HUGE. We also loved the salsa bar! However, the food was just okay. The tamales were really dry, and the only thing we really liked about them was the green salsa. The carne asada burrito was pretty bland and filled with rice. My brother said "what the boys eat" burrito was flavorful, so if I went back, I'd probably get that or try their tacos.
google avatar

Yelp
Consistently great! The half order of Nachos is a staple in my house and we have to watch ourselves with how often we come. I hope they never change or try to grow... this place is really great. The only downside is the parking is very limited, maybe a total of 13-15 parking spots and all the surrounding businesses have signs up that you can't park there.
google avatar

Madelyn B.

Yelp
5 years later and my review is still the same! I have to physically restrain myself from coming here weekly. Their fish tacos are out of this world. The cilantro cream sauce is literally drink-able. And their rice and beans keep me alive. Their chips are thick and crunchy, their bean dip is flavorful, honestly-you can skip the quac (it's just diced avocado with over-watery tomato's and onions mixed in), and their Queso is light and spiced to perfection. 10/10 every time (except the guac...obviously)

Yelp
Pretty good fish and shrimp tacos! In the summer you can sit outside and it is super nice! The staff is good and the food is made fast. The tacos are pretty good and the drinks are nice as well.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been coming here for decades. The fish tacos and burritos are the best. The shredded beef burrito is excellent. Great little salsa bar. I wish you just get chips for a hit cheaper. But I guess I'm just cheap.
google avatar

Yelp
My go-to restaurant after skiing! The tacos are not only delicious and affordable but also impressively large for the price. The lively, creative atmosphere adds to the experience. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had such high hopes after everyone else raved about this place. Maybe it's just because I don't like fish? I ordered steak and pork tacos. The pork were pretty good but the steak was flavorless and over cooked. After battling the crowded, tiny parking lot and minimal seating I was already frustrated. Won't be back.

Yelp
Love this place. Close to home. Great vibe, great service. Carne Asada burritos are the go-to

Nick G.

Yelp
Five years ago, this was probably my favorite restaurant, and it breaks my heart to say it's a shell of what it was. It was always a little on the inconsistent side -- ranging from fantastic to only good -- but the last few times I've gone have been mediocre to outright bad. Today's order was the worst it's ever been. Bland, overstuffed burrito that fell apart in the wrapping, with only barely enough sauces/salsa to make it palatable. The fish tacos were even worse: fishy, metallic and even more under-seasoned than the burrito. I couldn't even finish the second one and ultimately just threw it out, which would have been unthinkable in prior years. What was once a weekly visit has slowly turned into an every few months kind of place and now, with this latest unfortunate meal, I fear I will never come back.
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
The Carne Asada Burrito is amazing! I order mine with pico de gallo, guacamole, rice, beans, and cheese, then eat it with lime and red sauce. I challenge anyone to find a better burrito in town. The staff is awesome, friendly and quick to please. I have to say there's nothing better than sitting on the outdoor patio, drinking bottles of beer, and eating good food.

Yelp
Lone Star takes cards now which is awesome because I never have cash. I took my toddler because he's a big fan of chips. It was a warm summer day, but the indoor fan helped cool it down. I got the shrimp burrito for myself as always, and it was so good (as always). My son had a cheese quesadilla, which looked awesome. I'm forever a fan of Lone Star and tell everyone I know.
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
5/5 guacamole, chips were a bit hard for my liking. I followed the cashier's recommendation for the best tacos to order, which were shrimp, fish and carne adovada. The shrimp taco was the best taco I had. The fish taco was very fishy, dry, and salty. Carne adovada taco was way too salty and too dry. Almost inedible. I had to sip my drink with every bite just to swallow down the taco. The tacos did come out incredibly fast, but overall didn't make up for the saltiness and dryness.

Yelp
This place used to be the bomb! It was one of my favorite taquerias on the east side of Salt Lake. I have noticed that the food and service is not quite what it used to be. Things don't taste as deliciously spiced as they used to. Better than most places, but not at the pre-COVID level. It is also a bit disturbing how their credit card machine asks for large tips. Get a clue! This is not fine dining and you are just handing me a bag or a tray.

Adalberto L.

Yelp
Lone Star Taqueria is one of my go-to spots for tacos in Salt Lake! Every time I've been, the food has been consistently delicious. The fish tacos are definitely my favorite; flavorful, and always fresh. I've also tried the chicken tacos, and they never disappoint. Everything I've had here is high quality, and the flavors are spot on. It's a laid-back, no-fuss place with great food, and I keep coming back for more.

Yelp
Amazing! I love the vibe here, its very small but usually very full. Its super colorful and fun on the inside. The food was INCREDIBLE. I'm a sucker for tamales, and these tamales were great. The chips and queso, also very great. The tacos were great. Nachos were great. All in all, I will definitely be coming back here more often. Price-wise it seemed super fair. Last note, get the horchata it was delicious. also pour the queso on the tamales.

Robert L.

Yelp
A funky little place that has a light vibe. The salsa bar, chips, and guacamole are a must. As far as anything else I would get the fish or shrimp taco's. My suggestion would be to get one of each and skip the rice and beans. The tacos are made with fresh ingredients and you can never go wrong with that. The burrito is overstuffed with rice, impossible to manage and bland. The carnitas were dry like cubes of jerky and the carne asada wasn't any better. Once again, go for the tacos and chips and you will not be disappointed.
google avatar

James G.

Yelp
Meh definitely not worth the hype...food not nearly as good as what you see on DDD. Tacos were dry and honestly I couldn't even tell what meat it was. Line was insane. Definitely not worth returning
google avatar

Yelp
Delicious tacos, friendly service, and a fun and colorful atmosphere. I especially love their queso!

Yelp
Amazing and authentic tacos. All of the salsas they offer are packed with flavor. The chips are made fresh daily. I suggest ordering a side of chips and queso, you won't regret it! This is my new go to taco spot.

Yelp
I like this restaurant but it is still 'hit or miss' for me! That include the service and the food. Ambiance is great! It's fun to eat here if you can find a seat.

Yelp
It has been a few years since I had been to Lone Star Taqueria. It definitely won't take me long to come back. The food was great and fresh and service was perfect.

Yelp
What a cool place! We always come here post skiing and the food has never failed. We've shown this place to multiple friends and they're always amazed at the quality of the food and often bring their friends and family as well as a result. The fish tacos and burrito are incredible! Big thumbs up. Highly recommend. Service is fantastic.
google avatar

Kenn M.

Yelp
These are some of the best tacos on the planet. Love the chicken and adobado, soooo good! Will drive the 30 minutes to get here on the weekend. Plus the queso/chips is amazing...guac is great too. Salsa bar has a nice pico that we add to the queso...then if we haven't eaten all the queso by the time the tacos arrive the queso goes on the tacos. Wish they made their own tortillas or would grill them a little, maybe I'll ask next time. The place is usually quite busy on Fri/Sat night with limited/tight parking so you may want to park across the street at the strip mall...a lot of people do. Outside is a lot quieter and nice on summer nights. Winter everyone is crammed inside...I would estimate over half of their customers go through the drivethrough because the seating is very limited during those months.
google avatar

Yelp
Dry meats, stinky dry fish, cold tortillas, and just awful food. Tried this place on three separate occasions over the last couple years. Every time it was barely edible and gross. Don't waste time or money at this place. All the good reviews are mind boggling to me, either they have never had decent Mexican or they are so famished coming down the canyon from skiing a pile of garbage would taste good. If you want delicious authentic tacos and burritos go to Real Taqueria.

Alayna E.

Yelp
This is the cutest little place but unfortunately the food is not even mediocre. I've been a few times, and the most recent time was horrible. The second I saw my food I was unimpressed. The tortillas were dry and room temp. There was almost too much meat on the tacos, and the meat was extremely dry and unflavorful. I had to force them down because I was starving and they were $20 for 3. It will take a lot for me to eat here again. There are much better Mexican spots in the area.
google avatar

Shannon Y.

Yelp
Some of the best fish tacos I have had. The type of fish served rotates daily so you will never what type of deliciousness you will try until you arrive. Very cool vibe with the car on the patio and rusty metal chairs everywhere. A+. This place gets busy after a day at the mountain, and the vibe kicks up a notch also. Must try in SLC IMO!!! Enjoy!

Yelp
Hands down a local favorite. I haven't been in a few years but swung by with my mom to get takeout recently. We both opted for the fish of the day (salmon!) and got salmon burritos with a side of guacamole. Each burrito was enough to feed two people and wow, we definitely feasted on this meal and had enough food leftover for the next day.My only comment is that the drive through line was super long and it took around 20 minutes to finally get our food. Additionally, the guacamole was wayyy too salty. Otherwise, the salmon burritos were a hit.

Elizabeth W.

Yelp
Amazing carne asada and shredded beef tacos. Every salsa that accompanied was bursting with great flavor.

Trevor Y.

Yelp
Great little Mexican food joint. Tasty food and fun vibe. If you can find a place to park, recommend eating on the patio. Otherwise, the drive through is quick and easy.

Layne D.

Yelp
Maybe I was expecting too much after hearing all of the hype! Lone Star isn't bad, but it didn't blow me away and I'm honestly not sure if I would come back. They have a drive thru which is convenient, but when paired with the smaller size parking lot, it can be kind of a cluster when it's busy. I tried the chicken nachos since I heard good things about them. I will say this, you get a TON of food for the price. Loaded with toppings, I had to fish around to even find a chip at first. You could easily split the nachos with others. The chicken was decent. Service was fast, but not necessarily friendly. Overall not a bad place to stop if you want a bite to eat, but not sure that it stood out for me.
google avatar

Jessica H.

Yelp
Super limited parking in a very tiny lot. The wall tells me many people have hit that wall trying not to hit the cars in the drive through lane. Limited seating inside as well. Good gluten free options as you can see from the blue sign in my pictures. VERY fast service. Queso is not in their menu online but they do have it! And it's tasty! So cheesy which I didn't realize was a flavor missing in other restaurant quesos. It does get spicier as you move down the bowl. I wasn't a fan of the tacos. They were so dry I had a hard time swallowing them (and yeah I could have lubricated them with a ton of salsa I guess but I don't want super spicy) and I had a hard time chewing them too. I wished I'd ordered less because they were so hard to eat. Which is not how you want to feel at a restaurant! My friend got the Maria's Plato and said he loved that it was a ton of food but he agreed it was 3 star quality.
google avatar

Missy M.

Yelp
This is my go-to place for a super filling and delicious burrito. I always get a 1/2 burrito and can barely finish it. They have a drive to rough which makes life easier with kids. Their tacos and chirps are also favorites. I love the carnitas and carne asada burritos the best. The sauces/sauces are fresh and flavorful. The employees are always friendly and service is pretty fast depending on what time if the day you visit. This place is almost always busy which seditious is a good sign that the food is yummy! There is an old car out front and cowboy boots lining the front fence. There is seating both inside and outside the restaurant. This place is an excellent spot after a ski day because it's affordable and filling. It's located in Cottonwood heights just a short ways away from the bottom of little cottonwood and big cottonwood canyons. Definitely check Lonestar out!

Tabetha R.

Yelp
Sooooo good!! We had carne adada tacos and fish tacos with chips and guac. Everything was delicious!

Yelp
I finally got my butt to Lone Star after living in Utah for quite some time now and hearing all about this place. This place is a classic, much talked about spot. I recently saw that Antoni and Tan from Queer Eye came here, and as one of their biggest fans, I had to check out the hype for myself! Let's start with the things I loved: - it was packed! You know you're about to enter a great, much-loved restaurant when both the indoor seating is jam packed with few open seating areas, AND the drive thru line is out on the street. - The service was amazing. We ordered guacamole and a taco combo each, which came with a taco, rice, and beans. The order of guacamole was on the counter waiting for us before we had even paid. The rest of the order was out quickly - we waited probably less than 10 mins. - The guacamole was delicious, the chips were thick and salty. There's a salsa bar with a few options of mild/medium/hot. - The inside and the outdoor patio is fun and funky - lots of great colors, decorations, a car outside with stickers all over it. It's a really fun vibe and the energy inside is amazing. - Even on a very busy night we weren't waiting long. The vegetarian options were lacking, which I knew before stopping by, but I was still determined to check this place out for myself! From what I know about this place, they're known more for their meat/fish tacos as their speciality. The veggie tacos didn't have much flavor to them and left much to be desired. The rice and beans in the combo plate were delicious, but I wished there was as much flavor in the tacos as in the rice/beans. I've been told the burritos are the item to check out on the menu, so I'll have to try that out next time I'm in the area. Would I come back here? Yes - it's a good spot with a simple menu, and clearly they're doing something right to be packed full all night and open for over 20 years. I don't necessarily understand the hype of this place, but I am also a vegetarian and don't eat the items on the menu that they're known for. There are many other places in SLC that have more extensive and flavorful veggie taco options. My verdict: it's a classic SLC staple that is well known and loved by Utahns, and frequently visited by out of staters as well. It's definitely a place to check off your Utah restaurant bucket list!
google avatar

Nicole A.

Yelp
We had the fish burrito, fish taco and carne adovada taco. All were delicious! The burrito was huge and jam packed with filling. The tacos are big, too. They're not street taco size. I ordered two and couldn't finish both. The only downside to this place is its horribly small parking lot. There were no open spaces so we just went through the drive thru instead of eating in. The line moved fairly fast considering how long it was, but be warned that with the constant line at the drive through and the super small parking area, it can be pretty tricky getting in and out of there.
google avatar

Janeen D.

Yelp
Lone Star has been a place I have wanted to try and I am glad I finally did! Love the decorations and funky outdoor space. I had a marinated pork taco and a chicken taco. The place was very busy when I was there around lunchtime on a Saturday. They have several parking spaces and also a drive-thru, but not very spacious. After ordering at the counter, you are given a number and your food is ready. There is also a salsa bar with a hot salsa, jalapeno salsa, tomatillo salsa and pico. I enjoyed the tacos and tried each of the salsas. The jalapeno and tomatillo were my favorites. Very reasonably priced and a local favorite!

Maren B.

Yelp
I don't get it. This place has been talked up for years by friends and family but I found it to be quite underwhelming. I ordered the carne asada taco and the adovada (pork) taco. The carne asada was flavorless and the meat was rather tough and dry although there was a lot of it. The adovada was better but not much. It had a little more flavor and the meat was more tender but just by virtue of it being pork. My SO got the shrimp tacos and they were pretty decent. The shrimp wasn't over cooked but again, the peppers they come with were too sweet and the salt and heat I was hoping for wasn't to be found here either. The green sauce that came with them was pretty good, but could have used more heat. The salsa bar was very clean, which was nice and I appreciate being able to choose my own and get it myself. I picked the hottest one they had and it wasn't all that hot. I guess I was expecting a more authentic taco experience. The cost is on the higher side for tacos in my opinion but not wholly unreasonable. What is though, is the fact that it's a walk up order system and they bring you your food when it's ready but that is where the service ends and they still have the gall to ask for a 20% tip on the POS system. Bear in mind that 20% is the suggested minimum option. 4 tacos and $37.00 later, we left disappointed and flummoxed as to why others seem to think this place is good.

Amber S.

Yelp
I went to this place as a kid because the fish tacos reminded my mother of where she grew up in California. I was looking forward to revisiting this place and those memories. I was very disappointed when I went inside and ordered a fish taco combo plate and two a la carte shrimp tacos. The cashier then rung me up and when I saw the total of $41 and some change I asked to confirm what I'd ordered bc that seemed high. He printed out the itemized receipt and I saw he had added another combo and two additional fish tacos. I then said there was a misunderstanding and reiterated what I first ordered. In Spanish he then called his coworker over to complain to her in Spanish that I had ordered wrong and then I also confirmed with the woman what I wanted and she then proceeded to tell her coworkers in Spanish that "this lady doesn't know what she wants." I then confirmed the order in Spanish and proceeded to tell her that I understood what they were saying because I understand and speak some Spanish. She kept on rolling her eyes at me. It was humiliating and embarrassing and multiple times I was the one apologizing for THEIR MISTAKE and even said at one point "it's fine I'll just take whatever was ordered wrong and pay for it." The whole time I was speaking kindly and as calmly as I could. The woman then gave me cash back and it was only then that she reported I had already paid (which I didn't realize that the other cashier had already charged me). I was almost in tears and it was very upsetting being blamed and talked down to by BOTH cashiers. HORRIBLE customer service and the food wasn't even that great. I should have gone to Emilianio's Taco shop off of 7th east and 2700 s for their AMAZING chile rellenos and customer service. I will NEVER be returning to Lone Star Taqueria again solely for the way I was so rudely treated.

Yelp
For authentic Mexican this is a must. Their foods great and flavorful! We enjoy going here. Our biggest pet peeve though is the parking and seating situation. It's fairly hard to get to and parking in their lot is a no for us. We always get stuck. We park elsewhere and end up walking and that's what keeps us from coming more often. The foods amazing though! And it's a fun place to eat outside during the warm months.

Nate V.

Yelp
This is the ultimate taco shop. With a fun vibe perfect for grabbing food to go or staying. The burritos are absolutely delicious, with warm, perfectly crispy tortillas and a variety of fillings. Huge portions. Classics to creative options like fish of the day, each bite is a treat.
google avatar

Doug B.

Yelp
I was craving a chile verde burrito smothered in green sauce, just like I used to get in the 90's El Azteca. It hit the spot! The cashier said it was a bit spicy, and it was. I thought it was delightful, too spicy for my wife and son. They also let you buy half a burrito, which I didn't notice until too late. They are pretty big. I want to go back and get a shrimp or fish burrito. The atmosphere was really festive as well. Looks like a straight shot from Brighton so I might make this my end of the ski day tradition.
google avatar

Aya R.

Yelp
Though the food is alright, the portion sizes are great. The locale is super cute with a true taste of Mexico. I feel like the nachos would be the best choice. The chips were amazingly crispy and came with a ton of guacamole (if you order it). I got the veggie burrito and the fact that there were steamed vegetables inside was a little weird. Either way, I would totally come here again for convenience and solidly good post-ski food.

Yelp
Soooooo good. Loved the fish and shrimp taco. Great portion and fun casual place to eat. Can't wait to be back. Def a local favorite joint.

Suzette M.

Yelp
Service was excellent, ambiance was pretty good, but one in my party had to change chairs because some sharp edges on it were hurting her. The food was yuck. I got a burrito with pork. I wanted the mildest of sauces but both he gave me were still too hot, so I tried to eat the burrito without. Horrible. The pork was so old and dry I ended up picking the pieces out at home and giving them to my dogs. I added salsa and cheese at home (couldn't find any cheese nor cilantro they claimed was in it) Truly, I've never had such a horrid burrito

Yelp
I've been coming here since high school. Everything here is very good, especially their fish tacos. Their burrito is good also. I usually get the half size and it's definitely big enough for me.
