I really wanted to like this place, I really did, but it just didn't hit the spot. The joy I had at the the possibility of getting a hot Italian beef sand-which the way I love it brought me so much joy. You can only get them in Chicago. They didn't have them on the menu that day, no worries I appreciate a menu that changes. Just didn't think it would change so quickly since they just opened. Overall the service was quick from the time when we ordered the sandwich and they were very busy the day we were there. The scene is fast casual where you order your food at the counter and sit down. They play punk music which is kind of fun. Some folks have mentioned the music was too loud, it was a little on the loud side, but not unbearable.
My wife and I traded sand which halves. So I had both Divine intervention and Bark at the moon. The bread offered little to no flavor and inside it was just a hot mess. We use chilli crunch all the time for dumplings and dan dan noodles, the flavors just never come through in our sand which. Should not have got two chicken cutlet sandwiches, the cutlet was just bland and was unsure if it was true chicken cutlet or just a processed chicken patty. It was perfectly round so it very well could have been processed cheap chicken. I'll give them the benefit of a doubt, but just wasn't good. I've had chicken cutlet sandwhiches at some Asian food spots that were much better. A lot of their sandwiches just have a bunch of junkfood in it, like fries, potato chips, pork rinds, mac and cheese, collards, cheetos...ect. Some of the sandwiches sound like they came from idiocracy. It's not really a deli experience rather a junkfood sand which. That's fine, but it just wasn't good. It's like they just throw a bunch of junk into a sandwhich and thought the menu taste would come through on the sandwhich. Fries were fine, tasted just like Arbys curly fries, and I love their fries. On top of our experience my brother and his wife weren't impressed with their food. You should have a well executed sandwhich for that price.
As for the prices, in these inflationary times to not charge more with greedy landlords would be suicide. Many of my favorite restaurants closed their doors due to greedy land lords not the lack of business. I know Angies owns their building so they can be cheaper. I think it's unfair to like the food and hate their prices. It's tough to run a business, A wendys meal is now 10 bucks where they enjoy huge quantities of scale and cheap labor. Trust me the owner likely did a business plan and calculated what he needed to charge to keep the lights on.
Bottom line, I really hated giving a 2 star but it is warranted if you don't like the sandwich. I'm from Atlanta, but frequent Jax. I always brag about how Jax has the best sand-which scene with bread and board, angies grom, sun deli and sub cultured. With so many good options this experience didn't come close to what's offered from the competition. With such a disappointing experience with trying many of their sandwiches I don't think I'll be back.
