The Essential Vietnamese Restaurants in Chicago - Eater Chicago

"Up north in suburban Glenview, Buncha Hanoi dedicates itself to recipes from Vietnam’s capital. The namesake specialty, bún chả, was popularized several years ago by President Obama and Anthony Bourdain on Parts Unknown. It consists of multiple components: Grilled pork skewers and patties, rice vermicelli noodles, veggies, herbs, and a bowl of funky fish sauce to dip the ingredients in. The dish’s beautiful mélange of flavors and textures is worth a visit alone, but the menu also features items like phở and bánh mì. Online ordering is available here." - Jeffy Mai

Just discovered Long An a few months ago and it is now my go to. I usually do takeout, which is ready in about 10 minutes or less. Generous portion size and well packed for the drive home. I get the steak pho every time.

Google
Nice family owned restaurant. The owner is extremely friendly, great service. Good atmosphere. The pho flavor is good. Also tried their chicken bao. The chicken is too dry and hard for me and the bao seems to be store bought. But the display is wonderful. I would think the original pork flavor would be much better. I will come back to try other dishes next time.

This is another of our son's "culinary discoveries" in the Chicago suburbs. It's a winner! The service is friendly and professional. The decor is bright and colorful. Most important for a restaurant, the food is delicious and reasonably priced. We ordered some lunch specials: mini lemongrass chicken with rice ($9.99) and mini steak pho ($8.99). We also ordered banh mi bo kho (beef stew, $11.99). The stew was savory and came with two hunks of French bread. The chicken was freshly cooked and the lemon grass flavor was very subtle. The presentation was colorful (see picture below). The pho was more than my wife could eat, so she enjoyed the rest of it for lunch the next day. One of us also enjoyed a plastic cup filled with Vietnamese iced coffee (similar to Thai coffee). Our table caddy contained green plastic chop sticks; metal forks; sriracha sauce; sweet chili sauce; hoisin sauce. Bamboo poles and large color photos of Vietnam's countryside decorate the wall. Faux native sun hats serve as lamp shades. Behind the cash register hang three large posters of TinTin book covers. We hope this modest, family owned restaurant will survive the tough food-service business.

Reminiscent of Vietnam A spot that is deserving of recognition within the area. Recently Coming back from my home country Vietnam, Long An is highly reminiscent of the food I had; especially their bun cha noodles.. from the savory grilled nem patty and fried eggrolls, nuoc mam perfecty adjusted for taste, the herbs and noodles.. all combined together to satisfy the palate with a rich flavorful experience. They really nailed down the dish just like Vietnam. The authenticity in the food is what keeps me coming back every time I go to Chicago.. I would drive a 45 minutes from downtown just for this place. The owners of the restraunt (Brad and Lily) are lovely people! Their hospitality shines after my visits: they will take care of you and make you feel welcomed as if you are in someone’s home. Highly recommend the place for those who are seeking authenticity in Vietnamese cuisine. Will be coming back here next time I’m in thre area!

The food is absolutely fresh and delicious… I tried the vegan spring rolls, vegan bao, the vegan pho, vegan tofu noodle salad, and vegan bahn mi sandwich. They have plant based meats- ham, beef, seafood. Great flavors… wish I came here sooner as it has been open for five years.

Wife and I stopped by for a late morning eat. First time eating here. Had banh mi saigon style, pho, and spring rolls. It was ok. Was disappointed with the banh mi as there was hardly any pate, ham, and no porkrolls, no cucumber, no jalapenos.

Google
Love going to Vietnamese restaurants, light and healthy food! This place is one of the better ones! Cosy and warm inside with friendly and helpful service. Started with traditional spring rolls, which had great dipping peanut sauce! Went to this restaurant few times and I always had beef short rib! So sweet and tender, cooked perfectly! There is something about rice too, it's just different from usual rice! Love this place! Cash only!

Yelp
Was recommended by a fellow foodie. The fried crab Rangoon was delish. It would have been nice if you had 6 to an order.. We shared the lemongrass oxtail soup. Really tasty with a bit of heat. Iced coffee was terrific. Next time I'll order two or three to go. Since it was late I took it to go. My son graced me with a sleepover on moms day. So how could I not offer him the coffee. I tasted it it was one of the best ones. come to think of it everything I had there was amazing. The flavors are spot on. I kind of wanna go back right now and try a lot more of the menu. If you're in the area try this it's so good. There's another restaurant two doors down that I love, that's why I was never sure I would even eat her , but I will be torn between those two next door is tous le jour the agony of choosing.

Yelp
With the limited options for Vietnamese food, decided to try LongAn since the reviews were all pretty good. Overall, I love the quality, the flavors and the service. The hostess had such a warm welcoming voice and was rather nice. The dining area is rather small so definitely not accommodating for large groups. It's nestled between the Burger-Fi and Tous le Jous on Milwaukee and Lake Ave. One reason why I didn't give it 5 stars were because the higher price point and the only way to pay is via cash. I don't know many people in this digital world that carries tons of cash. For my wife and I, our pho, Bahn Mi and apps were over $40. I hardly carry $20 on me. Everything is either credit card or Apple Pay for me. I understand the fees but that's just a factor of doing business in this day and age especially for pricier food. Anyway, the food is worth revisiting again.

Yelp
You are better off getting some beef stock, beef and rice vermicelli and DIY honestly. I got #7, the rare round eye steak pho, but I got a bowl of something else...no rare round to be found, but got extra meatballs and other stuff...the broth had no flavor other than sweet and brown. Drinks didn't surface till end of the meal, and they gave us the strawberry milk tea instead of the strawberry smoothie we ordered for our kid...and when I tried to confirm the drink since kiddo can't have milk tea, the lady was like 'yes that's the milk tea, did you want the strawberry smoothie?' (Hmmm...that's what we ordered, so...hmmm yes?!)

Yelp
I love pho and I finally entered this restaurant right before my husband and I had to relocate. We ordered 2 bowls of pho, the banh mi, and an iced coffee. Pho broth is good. It's clear, flavorful, and leaves you with a comforting feeling. The best part they have a small portion that was perfect for me. It's rare for me to find a place that sells a small portion pho. Banh mi was good also. I'd come back for another. The restaurant is small but well decorated and cozy. The space is clean with clean restrooms. Make note, this place is cash only and there is an atm inside.

Yelp
Went here for the first time today and it was delicious! Ordered the vegan spring rolls, vermicelli beef salad, vermicelli tofu salad and two phos. The salad was spot on! Huge portion, I could barely finish it. Then the avocado smoothie was real avocado and very good. Not too sweet which I appreciated. Would definitely go back!

Yelp
We came here recently for a quick dinner. I am concerned that they are rewarding customers for 5-star reviews calling into question their yelp ratings (see photos). My wife and I both had regular-size bowls of pho with sliced steak. The broth seemed less savory than our last visit, otherwise the same as before. Prices increased again. Ambiance remains casual, sparse and clean. Service was quick and cordial.

Yelp
First time trying Pho. Very fresh lunch options. Crunchy sprouts, bright peppers, and firm limes to accompany pho. Clean restaurant. Friendly staff; attentive and welcoming. Good balance of busyness with no waiting. Pho was hot and flavorful. Good experience all around.

J J.

Yelp
Best Pho around! Must try. Their slushies are fire as well. Very nice owner, ambiance, cleanliness. This place is a favorite of mine.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is decently good for Vietnamese food the bad part is they only take cash! I would try the pho or the pork chop!
google avatar

Yelp
I love pho and LongAn did not disappoint! While the interior is pretty small and nothing too special, the food is enough to keep me coming back. The spring roll appetizer was super fresh and came with a homemade peanut sauce. The pho was exactly what I wanted - a huge bowl of aromatic broth loaded with noodles. I added sriracha and hoisen along with Thai Basil and it was perfection. The price was competitive as well.

Yelp

Started with traditional spring rolls, which had great dipping peanut sauce! Went to this restaurant few times and I always had beef short rib! So sweet and tender, cooked perfectly! There is something about rice too, it's just different from usual rice! Long An Restaurant was truly a gem in this area. Staff was friendly and helpful, offered to explain how to properly eat the food which I thought was a nice touch. Will go back soon!

Yelp
I'm honestly very surprised by how good the food was. We ordered the bun cha Hanoi, pho dac biet (pho special), crab Rangoon, and Thai iced tea. All of them were delicious. Truth be told, the bun cha hanoi wasn't as good as the ones I've had in Vietnam, but it was close. The pho broth had a lot of flavor and portions were just right. The crab Rangoon was small but delicious, and the portion was just right for an appetizer. Def recommend this place and the bun Cha.

Yelp
This cute little restaurant is located right off Milwaukee and Lake Ave in Glenview. There's no outside signage with the business name. It's in the same location as a previous Vietnamese restaurant (change of ownership?). I ordered the original banh mi sandwich and an order of fried egg rolls through their preferred online order. Ordering online I was able to pay by credit card. If you dine in, it's cash only, so be ready to hit up the ATM before you go. It's a smaller place and was pretty busy around 1pm on a nice warm Sunday (50 degrees in Feb!). The pick up time was 25-30 mins so I shopped at the bakery (Tous Les Jours) and picked up a milk tea at Palgong Tea. Both are just a couple of storefronts away, easily walkable. Onwards to the food - I can't give a review of the pho, but it smelled very good walking in. The banh mi was mediocre. I was disappointed by it. The bread was harder, it crumbled after a couple of bites, and lacked the fluffiness of fresh bread. The ingredients were ok, the pork roll tasted old "porky" and off. The pickled daikon and carrots were extra finely shredded and not really pickled so it was missing that sour, sweet flavor. This was a very disappointing sandwich and for $9.95, it was not worth it. Very lackluster in flavor and ingredients. The fried egg roll was pretty decent. It was on the smaller side, just a little bigger than a Filipino lumpia. For $5.00, it was just okay. The flavor was good, but about 2 bites for my sons. There are a lot of delicious Vietnamese restaurants nearby so I won't be returning to LongAn Restaurant. I'm disappointed in the quality of ingredients and the taste. The picture I took makes the sandwich look so good, but the bread was stale and the ingredients weren't fresh. The pickled daikon and carrots were extra finely shredded therefore missing the flavor and texture.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday for lunch. Inside was nicely appointed and decorated (if you care about that sort of thing). Staff was very friendly and attentive. I ordered the vegan pho, which came with tofu and various vegan meats which very much looked house made (meatballs and mock beef pieces). Overall, I felt the flavor was just ok, but everything was fresh. I also ordered a Vietnamese iced coffee that was creamy without being overwhelming. Overall, I'd give this 3.5 if I could (but rounding to 4 because of service + freshness) only because it was also slightly pricey - $13.50 for the vegan pho and and $6.50 for the coffee. There are great lunch specials but sadly none were vegetarian. There were other dishes as well which I would love to try on a second trip!

Martha K.

Yelp
Had a great time here! Great spring rolls and great pho. The service was really good as-well. The place is small and cute, spacious, and is very cozy.

Yelp
We were seated quickly and service was quick! Originally came here for some pho but their Bun Cha Ha Noi was calling me. Bun Cha Ha Noi includes noodles, grilled pork belly, pork patties, an egg roll, and homemade fish sauce. One order is definitely enough to serve 2 people. I had to take my leftovers home because of how big the order was. Everything was delicious but I thought the pork patties were a bit too over cooked (was hard and chewy). The pork belly and egg roll was delicious in the other hand. My mom ordered the pho and I thought their broth was delicious. Like other pho restaurants I usually have to add on more hoisin sauce to make it a bit saltier but LongAn's was seasoned and flavorful! If you're in the area and are craving some good Viet food I recommend checking this place out! They also serve bubble tea which I hope to try it next time!

Yelp
We've been a longtime fan of the former Buncha and have been eager to try out LongAn. We visited for Father's Day and was surprisingly pleased. We ordered the mini short ribs, pho brisket, and buncha, and they were all excellent. We also ordered the strawberry smoothie with boba on way out, and it was perfectly refreshing and not too sweet. On top of that, our server was very sweet and helpful. It was casual, clean, family friendly and reasonably priced (cash only). We'll be coming back!

Yelp
The best Chicken Pho I've ever had in my whole entire life!!!! I cannot recommend enough. The vegan spring rolls and coconut water are also 10/10. Service is top notch!!

James S.

Yelp
I've been coming here intermittently since they first opened. It's a wonderful family-run place. Delicious food with thoughtful, caring service. Recommend especially the spring rolls, beef short ribs, pho, and Vietnamese coffee.

Yelp
Great food and fantastic service! Loved that we stumbled on this gem in Glenview! Atmosphere is quiet and family friendly! Will come back again soon!

Yelp
Amazing food! Great and fast service. Relaxing environment. And overall great place especially that it's close to my house. Yay!!!
google avatar

Yelp
Small yet clean and cozy restaurant located in a strip mall. We both ordered the oxtail pho. Delicious flavor and a bonus is the pho did not have us waking up in the middle of the night dying of thirst for a gallon of water. Quick attentive service. NOTE- This restaurant is cash only
google avatar

Eddie C.

Yelp
Disclaimer, I don't know squat about Pho. It does not register in the top 25 things I would seek out if I'm deciding on food choices and that's being generous. That likely has changed after my experience here. I ordered Pho on a whim because I just wasn't in the mood for anything. It was amazing! I ordered the Pho dac biet and it was simply euphoric - from the soup (so much flavor), the thin steak slices, chewy tendon, and sprouts. Had the pork belly skewers - slightly sweet, salty with just the right amount of crispy char. Portions are very generous too!
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
Saw the ratings so stopped in on my way from airport to my hotel. Had a hankering for Pho and this sweet spot did not disappoint. The peanut dip for spring rolls was delish and they made me tea with fresh ginger and honey which I loved. The pho hit the spot as well.
google avatar

Saysay S.

Yelp
A warm welcome and quick service. Happy to be back for another bite to eat. A small restaurant with a simple ambiance.

Aaya Q.

Yelp
People are so sweet and serve you with so much respect. And as for the food. The short rib is to die for! I'm not from Chicago and the food was Phenomenal. Atmosphere very cozy.

Yelp
Our go to Vietnamese restaurant in Glenview! Great food!! Check it out.
google avatar

Yelp
Very delicious roasted pork belly banh mi. Fresh and crispy bread and generous fillings. Boba in the milk tea was fresh. Prices were good. For a Sunday lunch of sandwich and bubble tea, it was a good value compared to mostly places in the area.
google avatar

Jocelynn K.

Yelp
Got seated right away and food was quick to come out. Got two bowls of pho and the chicken wing appetizer. The pho broth was clean and not oily/greasy. It was flavorful and what you would expect from a good bowl of pho. The restaurant was clean and staff is polite. Cash only but has a no fee atm inside the restaurant
google avatar

Dave J.

Yelp
A bit pricey, but hey, Glenview... Food and service are great. Good sized menu, similar to the predecessor restaurant, Buncha Hanoi. Had egg rolls, pork belly, bahn mi, and partner had pho, and a shrimp appetizer. She said her pho broth was "light", not as full flavored as she recalled from a previous visit. All in all, I would recommend. Not too many Vietnamese restaurants in the northern suburbs, this is one of the better ones.
google avatar

Euro A.

Yelp
I had an amazing time at this pho restaurant! The broth was incredibly flavorful, and the beef was tender and delicious. The service was friendly and attentive, and the cozy ambiance made me feel right at home. They're also very focused on cleanliness and safety, which I really appreciate. If you're a pho lover, you absolutely have to try this place. I can't wait to go back!

Yelp
This is my first time come in to the restaurant, it's really cool you can see inside the kitchen. The lady that was helping us are really nice. But they are cash only, so make sure you a debit card with you, they have ATM inside the restaurant.
google avatar

Hamy H.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I (both Vietnamese) are visiting and came across Long An as it's near our hotel. We decided to get lunch here on a whim and I'm so glad we did! Their signature dishes are what we decided to try. We got their bún chả Hà Nội, bánh mì bò kho, peach tea, and signature oolong milk tea. Both of our entrees were phenomenal and taste like home. All the food here is very authentic and full of flavor. Out of our two drinks, we preferred the peach tea which was very refreshing and came with real fruit! Inside is decorated to be reminiscent of Vietnam and is very cute and quaint. Long An is cash only but they do have an ATM inside if you need. The service was very quick and efficient. We came at 1 and were the only table but it quickly filled up shortly after. Overall, give this place a try if you're in the mood for authentic Vietnamese.
google avatar

Rol L.

Yelp
Great food. Vietnamese coffee is so good! Decent portion sizes as well. Try the oxtail pho.
google avatar

Adrienne L.

Yelp
LongAn, located in a bustling strip mall, is a friendly and authentic Vietnamese restaurant w delicious food and tasteful decor. The menu has become much more extensive since coming under new management and features classics such as Pho, Bun (dry rice noodle salad), and sandwiches. Even vegan options are available. The pho soup is fragrant w the right level of taste. Also features a variety of drinks including smoothies and bubble teas. Prices are reasonable. This has become our go-to Vietnamese restaurant.
google avatar

Yelp
I ordered 3 plant-based options, the veggie bao, the lemon grass beef spring rolls, and the vegan sandwich. All of them were very delicious. The baos were so good with the sriracha sauce and the barbecue sauce on top. The peanut dip for the spring rolls was so good, it had crushed peanuts and lemongrass in it, which worked very well together. I ordered the vegan sandwich for takeout, so I will try it later but I saw pictures other people took of it, looks great! Very friendly, caring service. The atmosphere is comfortable, and the tables+chairs are aesthetically pleasing. Would definitely come again!

Brenda S.

Yelp
the atmosphere is Kool and welcoming. I love the shrimp spring rolls and vegetarian soup... Amazing !!!! & I highly recommend the Aki Tea's also!!!

Yelp
Favorite pho restaurant in north Chicago area! The service is GREAT!! We order pho and skewers. Now it has oolong boba milk tea too.

Crystal M.

Yelp
The first thing I ordered here was the #9, meatball and brisket Pho. It was divine and so I ordered it often, then tried the pork belly sandwich and fell in love. Everything has been really tasty!

Yelp
Tasty pho and Brown sugar boba! Staff is friendly and easy parking and suburban location. Cash only

Yelp
LongAn is our go to Vietnamese restaurant. We've been coming here for months and the food has been great every single time. We usually order Pho, Bahn Mi, and Short rib n rice plate. And the service it top notch.
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
The pho, spring roll, and pork chop are not special that I'll make an effort to go again. It is decent if I'm really craving for Vietnamese food. The pork chop was too dry and the flavor of lemon grass was not there. The three stars is really for the pho - pretty good taste and refreshing. The spring rolls and thick peanut sauce have no oomphs - something amy regular chef could probably pull off. There was not enough herbs inside the rolls in addition to greens. The shrimps smell a bit -- basically just dump into boiling water - not even some salt? We also got the beef skewer - 2 pieces only. Served less than room temperature and they were bland. The restaurant and atmosphere are nice and casual. Friendly for only small group - probably party of 4 or less. Prices are in the mid to higher end, considering the portion given. Styrofoam was used on my takeout of the very hot pork chop... Yet it is still worth a try even though the restaurant is located in a plaza with many more food options.
google avatar

Yelp
It's always our "to go to" place for Viet crave. Good food good ambiance. Hope the servings (amount of food) won't change. Compared to previous viet restaurants we've been eating at. #CASH_ONLY

Yelp
Cash only - have to try this place out! Closet Vietnamese restaurant near me. Very good.

Yelp
The food was delicious, there was only one server for the entire restaurant. It is rather small but still homey. We came after my nieces graduation because the wait for another restaurant was too long. The downside to the restaurant is that it's cash only, they do have an ATM but most banks charge a few to withdraw so unless you're already aware, you'll be getting charged. We came around 730, we ordered by 745. We got our food closer to 8-815 and they closed at 830. They were shutting lights and mopping while we were still eating. In the middle of the meal they gave us our bill and when we asked to order dessert they said they already closed the kitchen before 830. We were disappointed as we were really looking forward to it, most restaurants I've been to usually let us know when the kitchen is closing so you could order more if you wanted. I have been here previously and do believe they are under new ownership. The chairs are all metal or the wooden bench and we had 3 seniors with us that struggled with comfort, but we weren't staying all day. Just small things to be made aware of. I would come by again but probably just for take out or delivery if it's an option. Beef Short Ribs were cooked to perfection, juicy and about a medium rare but not chewy.Pho broth was good, not sweet or too savory it was perfect for a cooler night.

Yelp
Service and food are amazing. Tried the Pho and Bun Bo Hue, the soup is outstanding.

Yelp
Great pho! Great service! LongAn is cozy restaurant with really good food. Had lunch here and ordered off the lunch special (smaller portions). Highly recommend to anyone looking for some soul healing pho.

Yelp
New ownership New name, now LongAn Restaurant New rules: now cash only Luckily the food remains the same. Lunch specials at about $10 are still tasty. Short ribs with rice being my favorite. Off the main menu, the #1 Bun Cha Ha Noi is still good.
