"Long Chim What he lacks in Thai heritage, Australian chef David Thompson has made up for with decades of Thai travel, research, and reverence. At his restaurant Long Chim—a shadowy bunker decorated in disco balls and animal-themed paintings byBangkok-based artist Sath—the menu is split between familiar noodle, curry, and meat dishes and such experiments as sour orange ling fish curry. What sets Thompson’s food apart is the ingredients (he imports pad Thai noodles raw from the town of Chanthaburi and makes the fish sauce himself) and the spice—at least a Scoville level above what most Westerners mistake for Thai food. Luckily, there are delicious cocktails, based on the Thai food philosophy of mixing sour, salty, sweet, and (more) spice, to help temper the heat."

"Chef David Thompsom (formerly of Bangkok’s Nahm) knows the ins and outs of Thai cuisine, from long-forgotten heritage recipes to fiery street food dishes. He brings the heat with a tastebud-tingling menu of satays, stir-fries, salads, noodles and curries. If you're going à la carte, start with an order of fish cakes before diving into barramundi red curry and black sticky rice with coconut. For a chef's selection of the best dishes, opt for the "Maa Long Chim" menu, which includes steamed jasmine rice, dessert, and an optional wine pairing." - Sophie Davies

It’s been a few years now since we last visited Long Chim and I’d forgotten how delicious and authentic the cuisine is. The atmosphere is vibrant, lively, and modern, and we received excellent service from Wit, who made this visit an all round awesome experience. Highly recommended.

Google
Long Chim offers amazing food with bold flavours, though some dishes can be a bit on the spicy side. The service was decent x but the real highlight is definitely the food. However, it does come with a high price point. Overall, a great spot for those who enjoy flavourful cuisine and don’t mind paying a premium.

I recently dined at Long Chim in Sydney and was impressed by the attentive and friendly service. The staff were welcoming and made sure we had everything we needed throughout our meal. As for the food, it was alright but didn’t quite live up to the high expectations I had based on reviews. The dishes were decently prepared, but lacked the wow factor I was hoping for. The atmosphere at Long Chim is lively, making it a pleasant place to dine with friends or family. However, the food was a bit underwhelming compared to the overall dining experience.

Visited Long Chim to celebrate a friend's birthday and it did not disappoint. The highlight for me were the porkskewers and the barramundi and green mango salad...delish! The dishes have quite a kick to it so beware when ordering. The eggplant and the prawn fried rice were also up there, fragrant and flavoursome. Cocktails were on the higher end of pricing and it was a shame that there wasn't a good selection of mocktails for the non-alcoholic drinkers. All in all, we had a great night although for this price point, I would probably reserve it for a special occassion and not the usual weekday thai dinner. Location was close to Martin Place stn or a short walk from Wynyard stn.

We enjoyed our dinner here. The food was great but it did not blow us away. We loved everything we tried but the food was just standard great thai food. The chicken skewers were the best. Great service. Lovely place!

Google
Great venue. Delicious food. Superb casual service. We will be highly recommending this restaurant to everyone. They know what they're they're aiming for and they do a good job of it. My only feedback would be that the wine list is punching above its weight. It's a relatively casual dining environment but the wine list reads like a restaurant in a different league. Having good wine available is never a bad thing but the cuisine lends itself to clean, simple wines. Nothing on offer on the wine list seemed to align with the food and atmosphere price wise. There's nothing low class about offering a more affordable, humble house range in this calibre of restaurant. We enjoyed our food with beer and a cocktail.

I have been here 3 times. My first experience was quite pleasant. I gave them 4/5 stars. The last 2 experiences haven't lived up to expectations. The first 5 photos were from the first pleasant experience and the last 2 photos were from my latest experience. The latest experience was terrible. The pineapple pork belly was too salty. It was disappointing paying $42 for this dish and could hardly find any meat. As for the orange sour prawn...it looked a little sad with 5 pieces of prawn and one cherry tomato. As my partner describes it, "it's like a terrible date that you just want to run out on". The only reason I came back a third time is because I had half price vouchers from black friday sale, which I needed to use up. Even with the discount, it couldn't soften the blow of the disappointing experience. When it comes to Thai food there are many other restaurants that taste way better. If you come here, you are not paying for the food, you are paying for the ambiance.

Google
The entres were nice and so were the dessert, but the mains were quite average, nothing you cant really get elsewhere. The pork jowl was fatty but not greasy and the bean curd pork roll was flavourful and feels innovative. Main’s eggplant was good, eggplant was soft and pork had some crunch. The curry was just some eggppant and duck slices swimming in a lot of curry and it lacks some depth and variety. Dessert was good, albeit a but small in portion size. Service is ok and prompt and the vibe is quite casual - a midweek sophisiticated thai meal.

Yelp
We were excited to try this place and it did not disappoint. We booked online which was easy. The restaurant is quite large and has a nice vibe inside (bonus points for the excellent music0. We did the preset tasting menu, its was plenty of food with delicious flavor and spice and went something like this; Oysters, chicken skewers, prawn cake, pineapple curry , corn som tum, sweet & sour pork belly, siamese watercress, jasmine rice and for dessert: crispy banana roti. The service was friendly, quick and the pace of the dishes was perfect. Would def book again.

Yelp
Fast Thai food for a quick dinner. In and out in less than an hour but we didn't feel rushed, the food just came out fast! We just had two mains which was the perfect amount of food for two people to share. We had the pad see ew and red curry with chicken. The noodles seemed to have more egg than noodles and only a few pieces of the Chinese broccoli stalks. The curry was a fantastic flavor and spice, but there wasn't a ton to it (basil, chicken, spicy peppers, young eggplant). Overall, solid flavors and good food.

Yelp
Long Chim is a highly recommend Thai restaurant by world acclaimed chef David Thompson. This place is simply awesome! The staff was genuine, friendly and super attentive especially the floor manager Paul. He and the rest of the staff took their time to explain how some of the dishes were made and also stopped by many times just to see how we were enjoying our meal. Impressive. The food was off the hook. This is Thai food codified for Australian palates. Authentically different is one of their mottos and this couldn't be more true. We decided to go for the 9 course tasting menu and added a green papaya salad on top. So frickin delicious. The lengths they go to make the dishes stand out are over the top. They import their curry pastes straight from Thailand which are made especially for Long Chim, but the real kicker is the freshly made coconut cream made in house. They have a dedicated coconut person that grinds and makes the cream daily starting at 7:30am-3pm. Yes you heard me 8.5 hours dedicated to making just the coconut cream. WOW! This is a must when in Sydney. You gotta eat here!

Yelp
Attentive service and truly authentic Thai food. Favorite item was the fried bait fish with white rice.

Yelp
The tasting menu was quite good with a lot of variety, but some of the dishes appeared to be pre-prepared to the point of being cold. Also it is quite expensive. Crunchy prawns were cold (but acceptable since they still had the crunchiness). Chive cakes also came out cold which was very unexpected. The green curry beef and watercress were really nice. The fried fish was a bit underwhelming in terms of flavour. The mango sticky rice was very good. Service was really good, very prompt and attentive. However the place was just really expensive for what it is. Came again and had the pad thai. I think they are just trying too hard with exotic ingredients, they used dried prawns, and some stuff I couldn't even identify. It wasn't that good, and the price is very high for something that tastes mediocre

Yelp
Ordered the fried fish, prawns, octopus skewers, and banana pudding. All were good but the pudding for some reason was garnished with fried onion. It was a total turn off most the food was a 4 the dessert was a 1 star with the onions.

Yelp
So I had walked around a bit to find a place to eat. I walked into the space and it was beautiful in a trendy part of town. Now I am used to Thai Food but this seemed like a higher-end (more expensive version). I was surprised when I ordered the prawn skewers that they were tiny prawns and only came with 3 on the stick for $6. That is $2/prawn. They were however delicious but not cheap. Some people could order a meal on $6. I then got the green mango which was pretty much just that and it was $9. You can buy a mango at the Metro for $2 so the uncharge is significiant. It was crunchy and pretty ok. For my main I had the Massaman Chicken curry. It was delicious and succulent. Still on the bone so I imagine it was thigh or leg meat which I actually like better than breast meat. Highly enjoyable with soft pumpkin. I would probably give this place 4-stars but the pricing is exhorbant for what you get. In LA you can go to a Thai spot that has comparable food for a fraction of the price. That being said we aren't in LA and Sydney is one of the most expensive cities to eat out.

Yelp
It is exciting to know David Thompson is bringing his wonderful Thai palate back to Sydney to share with us. The restaurant has an unusual design and feel....it is more like an eating house and it rambles on.This will not suit everyone's style however the food will. We enjoyed a range of dishes including starting with the delightful fish cakes and the baked prawns. Some of the dishes do have plenty of chilli and can get one work up a little sweat...the Chiang Mai Chicken Larp with lemongrass comes to mind first. The mussels in chilli jam were stunning and so too, the vegetable curry. The crab fried rice was delicate and flavoursome. The flagrance of this food is superb. There is an catching energy and a communal feel about this place. Service is good, and caring. Wines matched well and we enjoyed the experience. It is so good to have these tastes and creations back in Sydney.

Yelp
Thai food with lots of flavors and spices. Plenty of seating. Tasting menu was delicious, and the mango dessert was one of the best! From the tarting menu, the oyster was so fresh and tasty. Didn't care much for the duck. A la carte sweet and sour fish filet was tasty and perfect for the kids.

Yelp
We were so excited to try this place but for us, it feel short in several areas. The service was just ok (they never really checked on us or refilled water, they brought all these random sauces and ran off before we could even ask what dish they were for) and the food was inconsistent (the duck fried rice was the standout), while the pad Thai was drenched in sauce which made it lackluster. On the upside, the Thai tea was mild and tasty. I'd give this 3.5 stars but likely won't return.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. The Thai food is exceptional and the drinks are good. The service needs some work here, but maybe I just need to get used to the service industry in Australia. Nonetheless, the food was great. This place is perfect for a casual, trendy, Asian dinner for groups. I'd def be back for food and drinks too.

Yelp
Outstanding food. Great heat, and beautiful Thai flavours. The spanner crab, mashed prawn curry and Thai style calamari are standout dishes. So good.

Yelp
Hmm I really wanted to love this spot. And if you are looking for a cool, industrial-chic vibe and decent drinks, look no further than Long Chim. I mean, it's a little 'off the beaten track' literally - its down a hidden alleyway. But as to food, we all came out disappointed. It's not necessarily authentic flavors, or a good execution of fusion flavors, either. There are plenty of other good spots in Sydney for delicious Thai (some tried and true favorites are Spice I Am and Chat Thai).

Yelp
My boss raved about the food here - he's been to the one in Perth frequently and said the food was incredible. We all ate here yesterday for our team Christmas lunch and it was possibly the best Thai meal I've ever had. I tried 3 of the cocktails - each one was exquisite. My fave was the Bangkok Painkiller. The highlights for me were the sqiud, the lamb ribs, and the banana roti dessert. But truly, everything was incredible. A new absolute favourite.

Yelp
Very expensive for some very simple food - the lamb curry we had were mostly vegetables and sauce and the $45

Yelp
I was keen to try this new offering from David Thompson of Nahm fame, having not yet made it to his most famous Thai restaurant and I was not disappointed. What: Authentic Thai street food from a famed Australian chef. Watch out for the authentic spice levels and garlic breath! Set in a spacious, industrial style setting with an open kitchen. The aromas will hit you on entry. Where: The restaurant is officially on Martin Place but a little tucked away around the back entrance How: The menu is pretty expansive so we couldn't test it all. There are curry, noodle, salad options and so on. Wish I could have tried more... Highlights: I'd have the banana roti dessert again anytime! The spacious and ambient space makes it great for group dining. Prices are definitely higher than the average Thai but not particularly pricey in comparison to other central Sydney restaurant options. I would return.

Yelp
Wow - my first words when we started eating our entrée of satay chicken skewers and soy wings. The meat was so tender and the flavours were incredible. The main was also wonderful, pad thai and fried rice with roast duck! What a truly unexpected surprise. I had heard a lot about this place but it really exceeded my expectations. From the moment we walked in, to the time we left, the service was first class. The waiting staff couldn't have been more attentive - topping up our water at the right moment, bringing out of mains exactly at the moment we finished our entrées. Definitely recommend and definitely will be returning!

Yelp
Was looking for a good dinner close to the hotel and stumbled upon this gem. Surprised by the low reviews and reasons for the low scores. We were greeted as soon as we walked in and were sat next to the bar where we struck up a fun conversation about cocktails with the bartender and made two amazing specialty cocktails for us based on what we like! Then the manager stopped by and had a nice chat. Overall great experience and I would recommend to anyone who likes good authentic Thai food and cocktails!

Yelp
Good but the food isn't totally authentic. The green papaya salad was too spicy & sour & had chewy prawns in it. The rice noodles with beef was too salty. Went to Thailand recently. The food is flavourful and spicy but not uncomfortably burning your mouth which this papaya salad did. Interesting prawn starter with betel leaves. Wonderful dragon eagle cocktail. Mashed prawn curry & desserts were good. Music too loud & didn't suit the atmosphere of the restaurant. Waiting service patchy - next table were told still & sparkling water were free & given the $68 degustation menu. We had to pay for sparkling water & were given the $45 degustation menu which is meant to be the lunch menu but it was dinner time. Overall - overpriced for what it is. Worth a try but won't be back. (Follow me on twitter for quirky bite sized restaurant reviews with ratings that hit the mark. @moniqueyeo)

Yelp
The heat and spice factor here is high. Be prepared for it because that way, you'll be able to taste all of the flavours. We had the vegetable curry (good selection of veggies in it), softshell crab (probably my highlight), and a papaya salad (which was where most of the spice came from!

Yelp
Excellent table preparation, service, and presentation, and good wine pairings. Admittedly good quality food, many pulled directly from his own very knowledgeable cookbooks, which I cook from regularly. The food is simply too safe however, especially considering the reputation he holds. Everything we ate used too much sugar, or rather not enough spice or fishy funk when required to offset the sweetness. If anyone knows that it's about the BALANCE of these elements it's David Thompson, so I was disappointed that he let Western tastes rule the day, to the detriment of how awesome some of these dishes could be. Case in point; I've made his Chilli Jam at home, and use it in both traditional recipes and when I need to add something interesting to my meal. Not having photos or very clear instructions, I was curious if my version was even close to his, so I was excited to see a plate that included it. Lo and behold, when it arrives I was on the money and it looked identical. But, here's the big difference; my home version used precisely what his recipe book calls for and its FISHY, and SPICY in a really intense way. His restaurant version? It's just jam, and he pulls back from even his own awesome recipe. That in a nutshell is my issue. It's all too safe, too sweet, and lacking that extra something when this approach is entirely unnecessary. But hey, good wine, and an awesome staff, that part was a winner.

Yelp
I wish there was a way to give negative ratings. This is the worst Thai i have had and would never recommend it to anyone. I ordered minced beef with cumin and out came chopped up bits of beef that was really salty. In addition in the middle of it was literally a mess of fried duck egg. My friend ordered green curry chicken, what one would hope is staple in a thai restaurant and they stuffed this up as well. It was bowl with lots of floating oil on top. We couldnt eat it. It ruined our night especially as it came as a recommendation. Totally disappointing experience with the waitress also asking twice about the type of water we wanted.

G J.

Yelp
Overly expensive, sub par Thai food. Had the $45 lunch special and it was mainly vegetables, a small salad, an omelette and a small curry. Would not come again

Yelp
So we stopped in Long Chim on the way back from the Sydney Opera house area. We had been walking for awhile and it was starting to get a bit late 8:45 pm or so. I was worried that restaurants would start to close and we still had at least 20 min to get to our hotel. I opened up Yelp and found Long Chim (we were in the mood for Thai). It was one of those "off the main road" restaurants that the locals enjoy. It was busy but we grabbed a table right away. Very cool atmosphere. The staff was very attentive and helped us order off the Long Chim menu (which is a bit different and more traditional than the gentle, more commercialized US-Thai restaurants). The flavors were amazing. I never would have ordered a minced beef with fried duck eggs but two of the wait staff picked it as their fave. The flavors were great. The hot was real Thai hot - but with personality. My wife had a Mosaman (sp?) curry. She enjoyed hers as well. thanks Long Chim for a great meal (just when we needed it).
