Long's Family Pastry has been around for a couple of decades, possibly longer. I'm rarely on this side of Chinatown or venture south of Broadway so I forgot about the bakery until I ate at ABC & CBS Seafood. Unlike the other 2 more popular bakeries (Queen's & Phoenix) on the main street, this bakery serves dim sum that's affordable & tasty, even with the rising prices of dim sum in the restaurants.
Located on Spring St. near Ord St., the hole-in-the-wall bakery gets especially busy on weekends & Chinese holidays with a long line that extends out the door. It's a no frills with cheap eats & I usually stop by to bag a box or 2 of goodies when I'm in the area. I remembered walking a block over from my dad's restaurant to pick-up some cheap dim sum (25¢ - 50¢) & bringing it back to work on my homework while noshing; thereafter he said I could grab something from the kitchen & stopped coming during my youth.
LFP has something that I couldn't find for years when I started having cravings for 砵仔糕 (put chai ko); they're called almond rice cake here. It's a Cantonese steamed snack cake that originated in 臺山 (Taishan) which is near Hong Kong. I can't remember if it was a family friend (aka uncle; we call everyone uncle or auntie even if we're not related as a sign of respect) or my actual uncle who introduced me to this pudding cake. Another fav is their cake rolls... I used to prefer QB's vanilla roll but their rolls have gotten skimpy & smaller over the years; I get almost twice the size for the same price here. The pandan is kinda like the vanilla roll but with a hint of floral coconut; the sponge cake isn't as soft as QB's, but good enough in my book.
Their custard egg tarts are big & flaky -- cheap -- that I usually skip the restaurant's & get them here for my snacking pleasure later. I liked the earlier egg tarts (pre-cv pandemic) with a thinner crust & more custard, now it's thicker & seemingly smaller. I used to like their 腸粉 (cheung fun) but the execution is off, a bit thicker than before & sometimes gummy from condensation. My kids loved all the sweet buns, cakes, & rolls. My husband likes the steamed & baked baos; they're great for snacking when he's at work or home. His current thing is the egg snow bun, a variation of the bbq pork bun.
If you're a fan of moon cakes, you can get a select variety here all year long.
Long's Family Pastry is my last stop before heading home, so the line is nonexistent or short. While they accept credit cards (& doesn't charge a service fee for using one), there's a minimum but I can't remember. Maybe $10? I don't need to worry about it since my order is typically double that. While I wouldn't go out of my way, I definitely stop in whenever I'm in Chinatown... come to Long's for cheap dim sum eats! 好吃!
