Loon lake is one of my favorite places. Camping, fishing, hiking, boating, etc. The lake level changes a lot during the year. You can pay to camp in a hosted camp site. Or there are several dispersed camping spots around the lake. Free. You can water ski and tube on the lake. But the rocks make it dangerous. And the water is cold.

Beautiful clear lake with awesome scenery to the west of Tahoe and close to the Rubicon trail

The campground is huge, and some of the spots are pretty close together… But the lake is absolutely gorgeous and the whole area is fun to explore

First of the month July 2025 and the weather was perfect. Did a three day kayak camping trip and camped right on the shore line.

It's a small lake, so no boats to make waves (perfect for SUP!!) Many small islands to explore to. Lot of places to park along the road that's very close to the lake, no fees either!.

My husband's family used to camp here all summer, every year. We took a drive to share this beautiful place with our son and to feel closer to my father in law who passed away in 2020. The place has changed a bit, but it is still a stunning sight to see. The only downfall was the garbage. Everywhere. It is unfortunate that people who pack it in don't pack it out. LEAVE NOTHING BEHIND.

Great place for camping by the water, stunning view, you can still see snow in July. if you are unlucky you have to share the place with young drunk groups that stay up late, given it is a quiet place, all you can hear is them and their party. it is cold at night, expect 50s or below even in summer. the road to the lake is 1 hour from HW 50, very good condition road. Of course, if you camp, mosquitos will love your skins, come with repellent product, be safe doing a fire camp (get your permit too).
