Minnesota Distilleries Making the Best in Local Liquor | Eater Twin Cities

"When Simeon Rossi began making a coffee-flavored liqueur in college, he may not have known it would lead him on a path to becoming one of the first craft distilleries in Southern Minnesota. Partnering with high school friend Mark Schiller, the two have been producing craft spirits since 2014. The cocktail room sits in the middle of the distillery and the feel is rustic. Slide onto a wooden bench and grab a board game while sipping on anything made with Metropoligin, a certified organic gin made with no less than ten botanicals." - Joy Summers

Yelp
I stopped in with my friends and family on Saturday. Autumn and Kate were working and we had awesome service and amazing drinks. Autumn offered some suggestions and gave us a few samples. I can't say enough about this awesome little hole in the wall distillery.

Yelp
Don't get discouraged if you drive down and do t see the place. It us hidden in the back corner of the industrial park. Once you get inside, Loon Liquors does not disappoint. We had barely bellied up to the bar and our server poured us a small sample of the seasonal liqueur, which happened to be cinnamon (and delicious). The bartenders were all very friendly and made great recommendations. I mentioned I like dill after looking at the dill martini, but ended up not ordering it. While waiting for our drinks to be made, I got another small sample of the dill aquavit. Wow, that was good too. Had a wonderful beverage and took some goodies home too. Would strongly recommend stopping by if you're in the area.

Yelp
We have been here a couple of times and have enjoyed it. It's got a nice vibe and some rocking, unique drinks! They are priced fine and most are made pretty strong. Service has been decent. The only bummer we've found is that if you want a bottle of something, it is way more expensive to buy it there than it is to buy the same bottle from our local liquor stores. Great place to stop for cocktails though and to try some of their spirits!

Yelp
How have a not written a review for this place yet? I have been there a couple of times now and I really appreciate and enjoy the laid-back vibe of this place. Smells of liquor mash waft through the dimly lit space. There is a sign that says this place is structured like a speakeasy and it totally works. Now on to the drinks. There is a great menu with quite a bit of variety to pick from, a little bit of classic and a little bit of experimental. Each drink is made with either bourbon, gin, or vodka that is made in-house. The Old Fashioned is very good, but I would also suggest any of the other bourbon drinks. If you want to take something home with you, you can buy their products right at the distillery. Their coffee liquor is absolutely amazing - smooth and sweet with just a hint of vanilla and cocoa. This has become my go-to coffee liquor in my home bar. Whenever I am in Northfield and have an afternoon to spare, this is the place I will probably go to relax and unwind.

Yelp
I love to support local businesses and we are so fortunate to have this local business open. They have an easy way to make reservations online and check in when you arrive. The entire process feels very safe and clean as your temperature is checked upon arrival and then you are seated. Table service is offered in the lounge and outside patio and all the tables are socially distanced with homemade sanitizer on the table. However, the best part is the tasting all the delicious cocktails. Depending on your preference of gin, rum, whiskey or vodka based drinks, they have one for you. I particularly enjoyed the cherry vanilla rum and coke. I can't think of a better atmosphere to enjoy delicious spirits and be part of the local scene.

Yelp
Hard to find, but worth the hunt. Good selection of spirts and very attentive staff. First of many visits. Tried the Rye Whiskey Barrel Flight. Liked 3 of the 4 whiskeys. Taking a bit home.

Yelp
Great place! Cool vibe with original drinks and some twists on the classics. Free samples of their organic vodka, gin, and whisky.

Yelp
I love this little place! You have to go on a bit of a treasure hunt through an industrial office building to find it, but you completely forget about where you are when you walk in. I went with friends and got the Rosemary Fitzgerald, which was refreshing and delicious. Note - the drinks are small but mighty. I had to sip slowly! I wish I still lived in Minnesota so I could try more of the drinks, but the next time I visit I might have to take some to go!

Yelp
Loon Liquor has changed and Not for the better. When drive over an hour to come to Loon and now they don't have any of the amazing crafted cocktails we have told all our friends about. They still have drinks, but the old fashioned is now the size of a Dixie cup and expensive for the size. The vodka soda was good, but I came for the Fresh Blood or one of the other amazing drinks we knew this place for that are no longer available. This place used to be packed all the time, we were the only 4 in there at 5:30 on a Friday and now we know why. We are now telling our friends not to bother. We used to tell everyone we knew that the drive was worth it, but it really is not anymore. We will not be back either....so sad, one of our favorite places changed for the worst.

Yelp
I've been here once and it didn't disappoint. They give you a decent list of unique drinks to chose from. I was with 2 friends and we shared 4 drinks. Its a little hard to find since it's in a location you wouldn't expect but i kinda like that. Inside is decorated with an urban feel. The outside patio is slightly small but adorable. They also provide board and card games if you're into that kind of thing. Looking forward to my next visit!

Yelp
The ONLY place to go for artisan cocktails, modern/hipster atmosphere, and incredibly knowledgeable and friendly staff. Best for two or a small group of friends. The owner (&guy behind the bar) hand crafted several drinks for our group based on our likes and dislikes (in addition to the several we ordered from the outstanding menu). He took lots of time to answer questions and show us the distilling process and equipment. Great prices, too!

Yelp
As you walk from the parking lot to Loon Liquors for the first time, you're sure you've made a mistake. You haven't. Keep walking. You'll be rewarded. Sure, you'll think you're being taken to some sort of shipping company or back alley abortion clinic, but you'll be pleasantly surprised, and not by a cheap warehouse shipment or abortion. This review has taken a dark turn.

Yelp
Wow! What a hidden gem! The location is in sort of a weird location, but once you get into Loon Liquors you will not be disappointed! The drink menu is right up my alley, vodka, gin and whisky. Both outdoor and indoor seating, they also have plenty of games if your group is looking for some entertainment. My cousin and I had the pleasure of being waited on by the owner and was able to learn so much about the business and the liquor. Its very clear to see the passion and the drive for this establishment. Now for the drinks, my first drink was the rosemary Fitzgerald (gin), very refreshing and light. As soon as I put in my order I saw the Midcilantro Nights Dream. Holy cow! Its my favorite drink (I love cilantro). The drink includes vodka, ginger, lime, cilantro, and chili. It left my lips burning the perfect amount of heat. I will definitely be back and I highly recommend stopping in!

Yelp
What an amazing find in Northfield! Totally nondescript distillery/speakeasy way off the beaten path. Totally worth the visit. The gin and vodka drinks were awesome!

Yelp
I had a serious case of FOMO after my significant other went to Loon Liquors without me then proceeded to rave for months about how amazing the cocktails were. I knew I had to get down there, and last weekend I finally did. LL opens at 2, and when you go in, the building feels sort of warehouse-ish. But as soon as you step into the cocktail room, it feels like you're in a completely different building. It's cozy, dimly lit, barrels everywhere, and the hardwood bar is beautiful (and made by hand by the owner). And the cocktails. Oh the cockitails! They're marvelous. Because I'm smart, I went with three friends and so was able to sample a lot of the cocktails on the menu, but if I had to pick one to recommend, it'd definitely be the blood orange gin drink (I'm bad with names). Oh and this summer - they're opening up a patio. I envy those St. Olaf kids a bit.

Yelp
Amazing! I love unique distilleries and this sure fits the bill. Loon liquors is set in a warehouse/office building sort of venue, which is very unique and makes entering a little questionable. Once you follow the well marked signs you open into a lofty space with tons of seating and a great view of the distilling process. The cocktails are reasonably priced, around $7-11, and the flavor profile is very complex, yet easy to drink. I normally don't like gin and the bartender suggested I try a gin based cocktail anyways. It was great! They're not lying when they say their gin is actually drinkable, yet flavorful enough for your average gin lover. I ended up moving towards whiskey and couldn't find a drink I didn't like. I would definitely recommend venturing over here if you're traveling through or find yourself in the mood for a great cocktail!

Yelp
I have visited Loon 5 times over 3 years when visiting Northfield on business. Tucked away in a warehouse on the edge of Northfield, looking up at one college from the entrance, and out toward the river on the back patio, walking in to see a working distillery with an evolving array of fermentation tanks and white birch stored in the rafters, I am always pleasantly surprised. Every time I stop by, proprietor Simien has further built the business. As an organic gardener, I appreciate his commitment to his own or locally sourced ingredients for the liquor he crafts as well as the bitters and the sodas. Their cocktails are imaginative, beautifully and sometimes whimsically concocted and always fairly priced. Since they are a busy distillery that now sells botles to over 400 stores throughout the state of MN, they are only open for retail Thursday through Saturday. Treat yourself. Go. The staff is superb. Over the years Simien, Stewart, Paul and Maud have made every visit special. A thank you to all of you.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the location. A hidden gem for sure. The gin drinks are amazing. If you like good whiskey, get the gin-the whiskey needs a bit more time. Will definitely visit again.

Yelp
Recommended to go here by some friends, glad we were otherwise we'd never know have known about it because it's so off the beaten path. Went on a Saturday night with some friends for a pre-dinner cocktail. They got a gin and tonic, thought they're house-made tonic (and the gin) was good. I got the raspberry balsamic twist and loved it. Hubby got the Oh my aching heart drink and thought it was great. Drinks were strong, delicious, and reasonably priced. Cool atmosphere and vibe.

Yelp
First off I wanna give my hat off to these fine individuals who made such splendid cocktails. True mixologists in every form, every single cocktail I had the pleasure of enjoying was crafted to perfection. Balance, thoughtfulness, quality ingredients, artistry you can go wrong and you won't in fact go now try it as soon as you can you won't be disappointed. I'll be back anytime I can!

Yelp
Amazing cocktail list, as well as atmosphere. They do an excellent job of removing you from the industrial area and transporting you to a warm comforting north woods cabin. From warming drinks to refreshing cocktails, Loon Liquors does a great job of showcasing their in house distilled Liquors, mixed with homemade simple syrups, infusions, bitters, and sodas. A great place to hang out an play one of the many board games :)

Yelp
Funky little out of the way start up in an industrial park. Pretty bare bones but they're trying! Tons of innovative cocktails, nothing more than $8. The creativity of the drinks is startling and they taste pretty darn good. Downfall- hardly anyone in there when we went, around 5 on a Friday, and it took the bartender 10 minutes to make two cocktails (one of which was a plain ol' gin and tonic). They only had two items on their snack list. A fifteen buck cheese and sausage plate or mixed nuts. We ordered the nuts to nosh with our high octane cocktails. Oops, out of nuts. On a Friday night. The patio, though small, offers a good view of the neighboring St.Olaf college on one side, on the other, storage barrels...ugh... a cheap solid fence could easily cover that eye sore. Worth a stop to try the creative cocktails, then move on elsewhere for some food.

Yelp
Loved it! Hole in the wall location with a relaxed atmosphere and a trendy, hip vibe to them. The four in house spirits and four liquors were awesome and fun to sample in their spirits flight. The coffee liquor is out of this world delicious! Definitely eat dinner before you go, so you can enjoy multiple drinks and because they only have a few snack options. What they lack with snacks they make up with their large selection of specialty cocktails. HOLY MOLY they are awesome and there is definitely one for everyone. Have to check this place out if your in the area!

Yelp
These guys make the best vodka. Period. I would stack it up against all of the big brands on the market and there is no competition. I brought some back to New York City and all my friends can't believe how great it is! Hats off to you guys!!! RT
