The Best Breweries in Vancouver, Washington and Its Surrounding Towns | Eater Portland

"In 2012, Loowit Brewing opened in a warehouse in Downtown Vancouver, bringing award-winning brews like the Gridlock Rye Porter and Shimmergloom Imperial Stout to this underserved area. The flagship beer, Shadow Shinobi IPA, has a balanced malt base hopped with a careful dose of Pacific Northwest hops like Cascade and Crystal. Loowit’s lager — a gentle, food-friendly offering — pairs well with the burgers and bites at the pub. Loowit has a second spot called Ole’s Outpost in Orchards with its own unique menu featuring cottage pie empanadas and fried brussel sprouts dressed in pomegranate and parmesan cream, sandwiches, salads, and pizzas, as well as a tap list featuring classics like their Shadow Chinobi IPA and crisp Corsair Kölsch." - Rachel Pinsky

Google
The easiest 5 stars I have ever given! It was trivia night and we couldn't find a table so we were leaving and Jeremy came out of the restaurant, grabbed us and gave us a table in the brewing area. It was awesome! Maria was an awesome waitress. Not to mention this place is pretty rad. Lots of beer selections. Food is excellent and came out quickly. Jeremy gave us a great evening all the way around. I had the Shinobi Smash Burger and the Barbacoa Sopa...dipped my smash burger in that Barbacoa....DANG! SO GOOD! If you find yourself in Vancouver, you should check this place out! My buddy had the Basilisk and said he loved it. Dragon fries are awesome! Becky said the Cesar salad was amazing. Just go here.

Google
A genuine fun experience with amazing beer and great staff. With all of the touristy driven establishments around, you should give this brewery a moment of you time to make you feel at home. Definitely try the Grimlock Rye Porter. With staff like Jeremy, this brewery goes to higher level! Thanks for the great time!

Google
Loowit is our home away from home every year we come to visit during the Indy Car week. Jeremy is truly amazing and takes care of everyone, and makes us all feel welcome. The beers are always excellent and a wide variety, and the food is always delish! Highly recommend the Shinobi burger, fish and chips and dragon fries...the beer cheese is spicy and addictive.

Google
Super impressed with the service we received here. First of all, they serve some of the best beers I've ever had. It's definitely worth a stop even if you just want to grab a drink. I'm writing this review because they went above and beyond to correct what could of been a mediocre experience for us. One of our plates was honestly pretty disappointing. We don't tend to complain, but the server could tell our table wasn't thrilled and addressed the situation right away. They agreed it wasn't up to their usual standard and offered a replacement. Even the head chef came out and personally apologized. They acknowledged the problem, apologized, and didn't hesitate to correct it. Even comped an extra beer, which was unexpected and appreciated. I rarely see customer service this dreamy. We could have left the restaurant disappointed and never returned, but they used our bad experience to provide even better customer service. Truly impressive! We will definitely be returning frequently to give them our business. Beers were awesome, service was awesome, and aside from the one dish (which I believe may have truly been a one-off), food was awesome too. Thanks so much, Loowit <3

Google
Second time in; the food is great, inside and outside seating available, 20 offerings on tap with some more canned options. Seems like they have a short liquor list as well. Order at the bar then find a seat; service was friendly and quick. The food was fresh and delicious. We ordered a small side of the fried Brussel sprouts before each ordering a sandwich each. I had the fried chicken sandwich and my partner had the burger special. Street parking around the corner.

Google
Great beer. Definitely recommend for a beer. I couldn’t bring myself to try the food when the fries are frozen!

Google
Food was great. The burger on sourdough bread was a bit underwhelming, I thought it would be a sourdough bun but it was actually 2 slices from a sourdough loaf which made it more a sandwich. Still tasted good tho but it wasn't really a burger. Service was great and the atmosphere was very cool with the comic book theme and pinball machines.

Google
Very nice brewery! I went here based on recommendation of Hilton Hotel staff. I was not dissatisfied. Great vibe!! Sports on TV, theme beers named for Star Wars and other fantasy, video game eras. Great beers. I had the Loowit Burger and it was tasty. They cater to local members, but are very welcoming towards visitor. Very cool staff. It similar to a west coast Cheers! Definitely worth a visit.

Yelp
Perfect burger with a soft chewy bun. Loowit sauce was a good compliment to the burger and veggies. Tots were crispy

Yelp
Just came for afternoon beers. Will say the two beers I had (216 Irish Red & Iron Rabbit Hazy) were well done and very crisp. My small sample says Loowit (Native American name for Mt St Helens) knows how to brew solid beers. My three things: 1) They took multiple food orders over the phone so burgers must be good. I didn't partake. 2) Cool merch, couple pinball machines, window seating to watch the suckers pass as you have a brew. Highly recommend Iron Rabbit Hazybif day drinking 4.3, floral, 13 IBU very NICE! 3). They have some whiskey, margs, Aperol Spritz, and limited wine so non-beer drinkers should be good (not a full bar).

Yelp
Excellent beer, phenomenal service, and an all-around cool vibe. Highly recommended next time you find yourself across the bridge from Portland. The BBQ place next door is pretty rad, too!

Yelp
I've known that Loowit has had delicious beers for years now, but it wasn't until recently that I discovered they also serve not only burgers but vegetarian burgers. My husband got the classic Loowit Burger, and I copied him but subbed a beef patty with a black bean patty. I'm not joking when I say it was one of the best burgers I've ever had. It was the juicy pickle, super fresh onion, and Loowit sauce for me. We'll be back when we're again craving burgers and beers!
google avatar

deangelo w.

Yelp
The ambiance needs work. It feels kind of unfinished they have some great art work on the walls but idk it felt kind of boring. I mean being right next to a bbq joint isn't bad but I can most definitely see it has a touch on the business. As far as the beer goes it was good im a fan of loowit beers so I knew I would love em on draft.
google avatar

Yelp
Best CHEESEBURGER & POTATO WEDGES I've EVER HAD. The cheeseburger taste homemade with crunchy pickles & a perfect BUN!!! Honestly to die for!!!! We ordered the Potato Wedges bc of other yelp reviews and WOW, they were out of this world with the mustard garlic AIOLI!!! A STAPLE FOR SURE!!!!! Also ordered the RED ALE which was good too, after all they are known for their beer!!! But quite honestly the food outshined the beer we ordered!!! We will return and we will tell others to go!!!! 10/10 the service was good for a bar!! Don't worry about the service, just go for the food and a PINT!

Yelp
First time trying Loowit Brewery and doubly surprised. Free comedy night and two of the comedians were side splitting funny! Husband has declared their beer one of his very favorite. Mother Earth has been his running top and it's hard to find here in Washington. Awesome to find a local favorite.

Yelp
A day ago I made a call to ask a question. The lady who answered the phone was very rude. She told me to look at the website and never told me the site. I will never go there and let many friends and clients how these people treat future customers. There is lots of places that make beer. Think about it !
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
What a nice little surprise right near the Vancouver convention center. As good or better than all the big Portland breweries. I love every type of beer I tried from Hazy to stout to cider. The seasonal were my absolute favorite and came home with multiple cans. For those of you looking for lower ABV/session style IPAs their Iron Rabbit Hazy actually tastes good! Didn't try the food because I was meeting friends for dinner but it all looked yummy.
google avatar

Peggy L.

Yelp
This is my fav go-to brewery with the yummiest food by far! I am an all things potato-phile and this place has the BEST freaking potato wedges in the area! I love mine with the curry ketchup, yums! My son also loves their kiddo grilled cheese and it's a huge portion for both him and I. Our day to come is usually Sundays, there's the farmers market across the street at the park or if you come at night, trivia night starts at 7! We were last place last time but we did win a beer in the bonus round! Special note: the BBQ next door also does smoked wings specials on Sundays so it's a win-win situation!

Yelp
We've been here a handful of times now and finally tried their food, so it's time for a review update & upping them an additional star. Everything from my original review still stands regarding the atmosphere and good selection of beers. Their patio is nice as well. We recently tried their food which was good, too. The Hubs had the Loowit burger which had a great char-grilled flavor to it. They appear to cook their burgers the "smash" style, though the menu didn't indicate this. The fact that they didn't ask how he wanted it cooked should have been a clue. But it was still quite tasty. The bun appeared to be bigger than that particular burger patty, but it was helpful in containing all the yummy, gooey toppings. I had the Currywurst Bowl, which the menu says is sliced bratwurst served over fries with curry ketchup, though I'm pretty sure the meat was kielbasa and not bratwurst. We're originally from Chicagoland and have eaten many a bratwurst and kielbasa over the past few decades, so if what they serve is a brat, then perhaps it's some local version of the sausage that comes out more kielbasa-like. Either way, the meat was good. What I would highly recommend if you ever order the Currywurst Bowl is to either ask for the curry ketchup on the side or ask them to go easy on using it because mine was nearly smothered in it and was just too much given how strong of a flavor it has (and I love curry and curry ketchup). We also got their Crispy Brussels Sprouts, which were fried to delicious perfection, and it was great that they serve it as a small portion for $4, perfect for a side or for 2 people to share with their meal (rather than the ginormous mound of them that some places give you for 3x the price). All in all, a nice brewpub to visit!

Yelp
The urban cowboy was delicious! The beer selection is always great and you can even get a game of pin ball in while you wait for your to go order!

Yelp
Huge fan of Loowit brewing from getting canned beers at Norms Market in Lake Stevens Wa. Was very excited to get to go check the brewery out while on a getaway to Vancouver Wa. Fun place with good atmosphere! Bionic Rabbit is one of my all time favorite Hazy IPA's and is super tasty on tap!! Tried the truffle tots and potatoe wedge's to go with our beers and they were right on point. The curry ketchup is awesome! Get out there and support your local brewery and taphouse folks!

Yelp
Sever lack of personality and customer service from the staff. I stop by because it's a convenient spot after work. The tattooed blond behind the bar takes an order and fills a glass but the interaction is unfriendly, dry and unwelcoming. Lacking something at home is my guess.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
Amazing: Friendly, attentive bar gal and the Urban Cowboy burger is the best thing I've put in my mouth in awhile. They have a Iron Maiden & Metallica pinball game. Outdoor seating and all is well here
google avatar

Karley E.

Yelp
I tried the Kolsch and it was delicious. Plenty of shade on the patio which was nice. I ordered the tots with truffle salt and they were delicious. Even more delicious was the loowit sauce - its a must try! Will definitely be back to try a couple more brews.
google avatar

Yelp
Burger was tasty. Service was awesome. Seated us (a party of 20) pretty quickly in a special area! Locals were friendly, too.

Yelp
9/9/19 Stopped in on a Tuesday night. Nice crow and cold beers. Good place to play some pinball and play darts. Get the Shadow Shinobi IPA and you don't go wrong. Andre and Anita who are a couple of their bartenders are super nice. Both have great personalities and really know their beers. They always have a great selection of brews and now are even serving food. I have been here a handful of times and never disappointed. They have some awesome video games to play and some really nice dart boards for steel tipped darts. I will be back here
google avatar

Katrina V.

Yelp
My sister and I stopped by Loowit Brewing Company for a quick drink. We arrived around 2pm. Although there were several customers it was pretty chill especially for a football Sunday. I asked the bartender for the hoppiest drink on the menu, and his recommendation definitely brought on the hops. Much appreciated. Speaking of the bartender, he was cool AF - hospitable and really personable. We made our way to the back patio and enjoyed some sun and fresh air while finishing our drinks. My time at Loowit was short and sweet, but it left a positive impression on me. If I have an opportunity to try Loowit again in the future, I'll be sure to come with an appetite. I hear the burgers are amazing, so they're on my radar now!

Yelp
Stayed at Hilton across the street and saw how packed this place was all the time, and knew we had to try it. Fabulous service, food and beer! Highly recommend. Ambiance is what you make it, and I loved eating outside and enjoying the evening. Will def make an attempt to go there next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Yelp
This is a real brewery. As I'm writing this review, I have a clear view of beer-making activity in the back. So, I can vouch for the fact that the beer here is fresh, but it is also very tasty. The establishment is small, but the flavors are quite large. Don't come for the food, but it tastes decent enough to snack on while you order more beer. I had the spicy (not) chicken sandwich. It was mire like a small chicken breast with a weak hint of curry. The fried brussel sprouts were nice though, which justified staying for more beer. As long as you view this place as a beer place that serves food, you won't be disappointed. Extra points for having old-school pinball machines to play!

Yelp
Think local. Drink local. Loowit beer. Much like the volcano that gives this brewery its name, Loowit exploded across Southwest Washington a few years ago. It is now generally considered one of the best and most popular local craft brewers in Vancouver, WA. I agree. Shadow Shinobi IPA is their most-known beer with good reason. It's a good beer ... and my first order on any visit to the Loowit Brewery. Packing 75 ibu and delivering 7.2% abv, this India Pale Ale is stealthier than many bold new competitors that seem to overload the hops and alcohol instead of finding a balanced blend that actually tastes refreshing. Of course, much more than Shadow Shinobi is on draft. Other recommendations include a Grimlock Rye Porter (5.0% abv / 31 ibu), Two-Sixteen Red Ale (5.0% abv / 23 ibu), and Snow's Ghost Stout (9% abv / 48 ibu) ... or just ask for a sample from the 20 taps available. Me. Loowit beer. Drink local.

Yelp
Fun themed brewery for the comic book fanatic/beer fan. Right next door to a BBQ joint. Beer is okay, but wouldn't make a special trip for anything they brew. Goes well with the BBQ next door.

Yelp
I'd never been to downtown Vancouver before. Passed through the area a few times and have been north of the downtown area but I'd never had the chance to wander around. I was in town for a Christmas party at the Hilton and I had time to kill, so I took a look around the area. I found two breweries and because of its proximity to the Hilton (right across the street), I figured that it'd be safe to grab a beer prior to heading in for the festivities over at Loowit Brewing. It's a small place with a few video games, darts and a TV or two but a large selection of beers mostly with either a video game or ninja turtle theme and one GOT themed beer. They also had some cider from outside companies. I went with their basic red ale of which they had three different reds on tap. That's fairly unusual to see. Loowit got packed pretty quick while I sat and enjoyed the red ale. Mild but a nice flavor to it and not really a bitter aftertaste at all. I think I was told that it is one of their best sellers. I wish I'd had the time to try some more beers. They had food items, but I'll have to wait for another time. Hopefully I get the opportunity to wander downtown Vancouver again. I liked what I saw. And I want a return to Loowit.
google avatar

Daniel P.

Yelp
The burgers are huge and everything is hand crafted. The Loowit sauce is amazing and it's a nice atmosphere. 10/10 recommend the "B.O.M.B." Burger!
google avatar

Rusty F.

Yelp
This is a popular place, so of you don't arrive early, you might have to wait ot share a table with others. They offer a large selection of beer and small selection of wine. Great place to meet up with friends or co-workers.
google avatar

Yelp
***BJCP Certified Beer Judge review*** Loowit is one of the best breweries in the state of Washington / the PNW / the entire west coast of the country. A couple of the better beer bars will put Loowit on tap in Tacoma, so when I made a trip down to Oregon, I HAD to stop at Loowit. Every single beer we tried on tap (which was most) were extremely well made and downright dynamite. The two people pouring beers were extremely nice and knowledgable. They are right in the middle of a remodel / expansion, but we still had a great time. If you at ALL enjoy good beer or good people, this is a MUST TOP.
google avatar

Sean T.

Yelp
What a great place to stop and grab a burger and a great tasting beer. Had the Berliner burger..was FANTASTIC. Did I mention the awesome beer? Outdoor seating is available. Drink local beer!
google avatar

Garrett B.

Yelp
Very friendly staff, great beer, cool place and great food. We got take out as we were staying across the street at the Hilton, GARRETT was the bartender and he was really cool and offered great suggestions on the beer. We ordered hamburgers and tots and they were super delicious. We will definitely be going back again!!
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Great place to go and have dinner and a beer with friends. Food is delicious and staff is friendly. If you like to play pinball and a game of darts. This place is located downtown, Vancouver. Perfect evening to watch the Christmas boats on the Columbia River. Merry Christmas to all!
google avatar

Travis W.

Yelp
I had drank their beer in the past and always loved it. After hitting the farmers market on the weekend, we decided to stop in. I ordered the burger with a fried egg and fried broccoli on the side. The burger was amazing and the broccoli was better than I could have imagined. The beer was delightful and the bartender was spot on. This place lost a star because they allow children in. We were enjoying our beers when a couple brought in two small children who were crying, running around and banging on the machines, and screaming. The children's poor behavior is the fault of the parents, but a brew pub really isn't he place for children and we left before ordering another round due to the shrieking children. The bartender was kind enough to let us know about other places around to get beer that are 21 and up, but it was a let down to have a good first experience ruined by a policy that allows all ages in. It's a brewery that serves food, not Chuck E. Cheese. I hope they change the allowed age range, but I doubt they will. If I had children that bad I would want to drink as well I guess. Allowing children will likely restrict us coming back. It ruins the atmosphere and makes it less of a place to relax and have a good time.

Yelp
The Couve is the #1 Hipster town in the USA and this place is totally hipster. Really laid back, hipster look and feel. Love the bar facing the sidewalk so you can chat with pedestrians and the dart boards. I had the Cubano ($11) and it was quite tasty. They use pulled pork instead of the traditional roast pork but it works ok. I also had their Shadow Shinobi (AKA Shadow Ninja) IPA and it was great. It's one of the best craft beer venues in Clark County. Check it out.
google avatar

Dan F.

Yelp
5stars. Why??? Easy, They make great beers!! That's my review, the following is jarble to make the review lengthy. Loowit have a sexy staff and she Rocks Pantera whenever we go in to drink. Swamp coolers blowing a cool mist while I get my ass handed to me on the free arcade games. Only down fall at this current moment, no food. Did I mention the Killer beers?!
google avatar

Monique H.

Yelp
We have been indulging in the IPA here at Loowit for many years. In my 11 years of Craft beer indulgence, Shadow Shinobi, (AKA Shadow Ninja) is by far the best IPA in the Northwest. I only travel in the NW, these days. BUT you want to Hop up your life and sample an Award-Winning IPA this is your Brewery.
google avatar

Darlene F.

Yelp
Great Variety of Beers! Fun place to shoot darts, play arcade games, & just hang out! First visit to Loowit they had a guest band & it was awesome! Second time back after remodel & it is an inviting place for family. Didn't get a chance to try the food, I will have to next time. Definitely would recommend trying this place out!
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
Another good stop in Vancouver. I had the cream ale on nitro. It was excellent, I love a good nitro beer. I liked the space, it is a typical brewery in a warehouse where you can sit where they actually brew. They are also dog friendly as well.
google avatar

Sebastian K.

Yelp
I've been raving about Vancouver breweries for a while now, and this is one of my favorites in town. They not only have several delicious beers on tap, but they have free arcade games! I spent a good amount of time playing Mortal Kombat III, and they also have a Street Fighter machine and Gauntlet. I've honestly never been to a brewery that has free arcade games, and it's a definitely a good way to encourage people to stay longer. I tried a flight of their beer, and my favorites of my choices were the Shadow Ninja IPA, Saturnalia and the session IPA Roll for Experience +8. It looks like they do a lot of weird/experimental beers, which I am always in the mood for trying. They have a large seating area that includes a bar, a restaurant-style area and a more open area where the arcade games are. It's great for different occasions, and if the games are too loud and obnoxious you can always move. Service was extremely friendly, and they had absolutely no qualms with breaking a twenty so I could get change for the parking meter. I also got advice on what beer to try out, and a cider for my wife. Overall this was a great visit, and I look forward to coming back.
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
This is my favorite Vancouver brewery. I think their brews are phenomenal, so much so that I will need a driver next time I visit. My last visit was almost 6 hours, until I felt safe to drive. This was a choice I made because I HAD TO HAVE two drinks, instead of just one with my food. BTW, the food is amazing! I recommend the grilled cheese(either version), the fried brussel sprouts, with the Dwarven Forge or Super Shinobi Imperial IPA. I wish they still allowed dogs in, and I personally preferred the ambiance before the remodel, but the beer and new food menu is worth it!
google avatar

Katie G.

Yelp
I was hoping for amazing beer - didn't get it. Had an IPA and ESB - just not good. Place had a fun vibe, but we didn't enjoy.
google avatar

James S.

Yelp
Since the Covid19 pandemic, I have been preparing for the apocalypse and stealing my thought process on doomsday.... then we moved to phase Two, and in my mind I knew I wanted a cheeseburger from Loowit. I had my growler filled up a few times during the pandemic and I love the Grimlock Porter so when it came down to just getting out of the house, the decision was made to go to Loowit. The wife had the Loowit burger and I had the B.O.M.B. Burger with some tots. Best burger eveh! Loowit is just simply a nice relaxing and friendly place, beer is awesome and the staff is great.
google avatar

Kirsten F.

Yelp
We arrived a party of four, all ordered burgers and agreed these were some of the best burgers we've had. And we've eaten many burgers. The sauces were very flavorful and the burgers were complimented by the challah buns. Added nice touch are the choices of sides to accompany the burger. The pretzels, Brüssel sprouts and potato wedges were all hits. The service was friendly even though they were very busy and in a new location trying to pull together their routine. I can imagine this would be a stressful time but they're doing great.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
Loowit was another great brewery that we experienced while on our weekend trip to Vancouver, WA a couple of weeks ago. At this brewery we had two of their beers. One was their Red Ale and the other was their Ninja IPA. Both beers were fantastic and had a great body and taste. The Red Ale was delightfully smooth and the Ninja IPA had a great flavor to it. Even Steven liked the Ninja IPA and he has a troubled relationship with IPAs so if he gave his endorsement of it then that speaks pretty highly of the IPA! Definitely a brewery that needs to be checked out!

Mark R.

Yelp
The Food is just as good as the beer. I definitely recommend the burger. Pretty cool that all of their beer comes out of this one location. These guys work hard and their quality proves it.
google avatar

Michael K.

Yelp
I really love their concept for Mug Club, instead of a lot of customized glassware for members that, of course, will have some breakage and then your regular customer is without their mug, they have a rack of numbered leather strap handles that large mason jars slip into, ingenious! Did not try any of the food but the beer I sampled was very good. My favorite was a double white stout, Snow's Ghost, have had several white stouts but never one with a double malt bill, had a tremendous coffee nose and flavor with a creamy mouth feel, not too sweet. Also, being a HUGE Doctor Who fan I had to try their take on an ESB, Bigger on the Inside, had some good biscuity notes and was balanced pretty well, leaning more towards a Pale Ale flavor profile but enjoyable. Service was a bit slow even though it wasn't super busy so there is room for improvement and will need to come back and try some food as the plates I saw coming out looked and smelled really delicious.
google avatar

Nicole H.

Yelp
The atmosphere is cool and open, bar tenders are friendly, great beer and delicious sandwiches. Plus dog friendly patio.... what else could you want?
google avatar

Karen I.

Yelp
Stopped in for lunch today on a whim.....this will be our new local favorite! Husband had B.O.M.B burger...not for the faint of heart. This burger was a smorgasbord of flavor. Be sure to get extra napkins as an extra extra side....you'll need them. I had the Hawaiian burger I'll dub the cornucopia of burgers. Tomato, pineapple, onion, beef and oh, that bun.......delicious! We also had an order of the chips and salsa....Awesome!! Dog friendly patio sealed the deal for us. Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Yelp
Best brewery in the Couv. Always look forward to hearing the live music and playing a vintage arcade game while enjoying world class brew.

Yelp
Great place to go for a quality beer! I am glad we are finally getting good beer in town. I am a self proclaimed beer snob and I really like their beer. Just wish they had a food selection, but that will come with time im sure. Parking is very limited around this place, staff is very nice and it has a great vibe. Cheers!
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
Grimlock rye porter is fantastic! I finally got to try their food today and settled on the black bean burger no bun with a side of their pickled green beans. Spectacular! A suggestion to the beer tender would be to notify patrons that they are out of a particular food. I don't care that places run out of food but it's a minor (very minor) inconvenience to find another dish after you have already decided. Besides that he was wonderful. Loowit continues to be a favorite spot of mine in downtown Vancouver.
google avatar

Michael B.

Yelp
My friends and I popped in for a quick beer before closing. The bartender was super nice and friendly, and the beer was 10/10. Pop in if you're looking for a solid beer and friendly staff, you won't be disappointed. Enjoy!!
