6 Pacific Northwest Ice Cream Shops With Must-Try Local Flavors

"A small ice cream company that truly makes everything from scratch, Lopez Island Creamery pasteurizes raw milk brought in from local farms like Edaleen and produces a rich base with 16% butterfat; the team has processed each step in-house since 1994, blends locally picked berries (sometimes leaving visible seeds as proof they are real), and uses Washington dairy for caramel and seasonal flavors like lavender, strawberries, and blueberries. Their blackberry is the most popular flavor and is described as very fresh with a great hit of flavor, and fans can even watch production through a window at the Anacortes factory." - Tim Newcomb

The Best Restaurants on Washington’s San Juan Islands | Eater Seattle

"Before hopping on the ferry in Anacortes to head out to the islands, make a detour to this San Juans staple that’s been churning out small-batch, handcrafted ice cream for more than 40 years using local cream and berries. Originally founded on Lopez Island in 1982, the creamery recently moved to the mainland both to reduce its carbon footprint from frequent ferry trips and expand its operations, opening a splashy new factory and storefront in Anacortes in early 2022." - Zoe Baillargeon

Friendly staff, generous portions, and great choice of flavors. The only thing missing is an espresso machine for an affogato. Will definitely stop every time go on this route. 😋

Google
Ending a beautiful day here after visiting Anacortes and Deception Pass was the right decision. Everything was perfect! I love the space, the friendly staff and most of all, the flavorful ice cream! I ordered a root beer float with salted caramel ice cream and the wife got a scoop of blueberry ice cream in a waffle cone. Both were so good we ended up buying other flavors to take home. I highly recommended visiting!

Janet B

Google
Large scoops of delicious ice cream. They offer a nice variety of interesting flavors. We tried pistachio, salted caramel swirl, and maple nut - all wonderful. It's kind of out of the way, not right in the main part of Anacortes, but worth the drive.

Jen R

Google
Lopez Island Creamery's factory store in Anacortes is a must-visit! You get to see how they make their delicious ice cream. They have many unique flavors and some cool merchandise. Definitely worth the trip!

Courtney S.

Google
It was great to finally visit the creamery of our favorite local ice cream. So many more flavors to choose from. Plus, freshly made waffle cones! We were able to sample some new-to-us flavors. Absolutely delicious! Very thing was so fresh and creamy! Best ice cream ever!

Lori L.

Google
The cutest ice cream shop! Nestled just off the main road, this charming ice cream shop is a hidden gem that deserves a spot on everyone’s must-visit list. From the moment I stepped inside, I was greeted with warm smiles and genuine kindness from the staff, who are clearly passionate about what they do. Their enthusiasm made the entire experience even sweeter! Now, let’s talk about the ice cream—it’s nothing short of heavenly! Each scoop is rich and creamy, bursting with flavor that dances on your palate. Whether you opt for classic vanilla or one of their unique creations, every bite feels like a delightful treat. The freshness of the ingredients is evident, making it a truly indulgent experience. The outdoor seating area is a lovely addition, providing the perfect ambiance to enjoy your ice cream while soaking up the sun or watching the world go by. It’s a cozy spot to relax, whether you're enjoying a solo treat or sharing laughs with friends and family. This ice cream shop is a delightful escape from the hustle and bustle, and the combination of exceptional ice cream, friendly service, and a charming outdoor setting makes it a destination worth seeking out. I can’t wait to return for another scoop!

Google
Having recently visited the local ice cream factory, I was pleasantly surprised by the high quality of their products. Each ice cream here feels like a nostalgic journey back to childhood when the flavors were truly rich and natural. Every scoop reflects the love and attention to detail, from the texture to the carefully selected ingredients. The variety of flavors offered is impressive, each one unique in its own way. I was especially fond of the vanilla ice cream—it reminded me of those times when such treats were rare but left a lasting impression with their taste. The atmosphere at the factory is also worth mentioning. Everything is set up in a way that makes visitors feel like they are part of the process. The staff is very friendly and eager to share the story behind each type of ice cream, adding a special value to the visit. It feels like I’ve discovered a small oasis of childhood memories, a place where I want to return again and again. I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates genuine quality and wants to enjoy the flavors of their youth.

Maricar P.

Google
The flavor options are amazing, I wish I got to try all of them! The scoop sizes are generous, I’m shocked at how big my single scoop was. Would definitely come back when in the area!

Yelp
Absolutely delicious ice cream. Hard to say which flavor is my favorite, so here's a list of the ones we go to. Skagit strawberry, maple nut, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate almond chunk, as well as any of their seasonal specials. You can taste the care put into these ice creams, and understand this isn't just an ice cream shop, it's a creamery. Friendly ambiance, great service, always worth a stop whenever we pass through on the way to the islands.

Alice L.

Yelp
It was close to closing time, but the worker was patient as we tried different samples. Ended up getting 4 scoops to share, lol. Peanut butter, cookies & cream, seasonal strawberry & matcha. Creamy & hit the spot, even though it was a chilly day.

nlew l.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream served by friendly staff. Great place to stop by before heading to Anacortes Ferry Landing. A single consists of two scoops! Skagit strawberry is so yummy as was coffee toffee crunch. Hubby had Decidedly chocolate and coffee toffee crunch. Sooo good! Can't wait to come back and try some of their other flavors. Definitely add to your list of places to stop when you're in the area.

Hasel Y.

Yelp
Recently discovered this place after road tripping and the ice creams are soo good! Coffee toffee is my fave! Been back twice and it takes us over an hour to get here! Nice patio area and clean bathrooms. Definitely a must stop before heading back to the road

T S.

Yelp
SUCH GOOD ICE CREAM!! The staff is so kind and helpful, letting us try a few different flavors. I would definitely recommend the Maple Nut, Salted Caramel Swirl, and the Coffee. All the flavors were great thought. Lorelai and Sienna were great at helping us decide what to get!

Yelp
This store is their factory location storefront and is located off of Highway 20 near the Swinomish Casino. There are plenty of parking spots available in their lot. When we went, there were plenty of empty tables inside as well. Kids scoop here is $4, a single is $6, and a double is $8. They take cash or credit cards. You are allowed to sample flavors prior to purchasing. I paid for a single scoop of mint chocolate chip in a waffle cone ($1 extra). The portion was huge and I could only finish half of the scoop. Personally, I found the ice cream to be too heavy and sweet, compared to some of the other ice cream parlors. The waffle cone is quite sweet as well, but tasted fresh and crunchy. One oddity of this place is that they offer to sell ice cream directly into your hand for $1 off. Yes, it's placed on your hand...
google avatar

Jesena M.

Yelp
I've tried their ice cream before, so when we drove past and I saw that they have a factory here, I had to find out if they also sell scoops... yes they do! Great choices of flavors, nice service and some tables and chairs inside and outside. Plenty of parking.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
This easy to find location is the factory and ice cream shop. Not located on Lopez Island. The ice cream scoops are large and any where else they would be a double or triple. They do cup cone or hand. The hand men's in your hand. Indoor and outdoor seats available. Great product with many flavors
google avatar

William W.

Yelp
We used to love coming by here for ice cream after visiting up north because the value was amazing. Huge scoops of ice cream at a wonderful price. So many delicious flavors. BUT we went this past week and couldn't believe the change. Scoops one half the size they were and price was the same. It was embarrassing because we had friends with us that we had told about the great portion size. Super disappointed in this change. They should offer different sizes for different prices. At first I thought we got the " kids " size and asked about the change. Was told that too many complained that the scoops were too large. What would be the logical changes to make ? Not sure we'll go again. KW from Bellingham
google avatar

Eddie M.

Yelp
Good selection of great ice cream. Moden building right off Highway 20. Large patio, particularly shaded with a sail, to enjoy some ice cream.
google avatar

Naomi Z.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream! I loved the coffee flavor. The cones are also delicious. Generous portions.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
The line tends to get busy but the staff are usually quick. The ice cream is delicious however the size's are massive. I order a kids size and it's still more than enough for me. Ambience is a factory feel but in a good way.
google avatar

Chris R.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! Hands down some of the best ice cream I've ever had! So smooth and creamy, while still dense and hearty! The service we received was also very good, HOWEVER! Whomever is managing this place is missing out on a huge opportunity, by not offering your pie by the slice. Your daily sales would increase significantly and your whole pie sales specifically would sore! Super clean and fun atmosphere, definitely worth a visit when you experience the beauty of Anacortes.

Kai W.

Yelp
A very sweet place. Nice and kind staff, generous offering. We come here every time when getting here hiking or taking ferry
google avatar

Ash S.

Yelp
Clearly we did not read the reviews before this... The single scoops are massive here. We've only had Lopez Island pints and cookie sandwiches on San Juan Island and local grocery stores and have been wanting to come to this location for awhile. I pretty much never get just plain chocolate ice cream scoops but their Delectable Chocolate is worth it. The Salted Caramel Swirl is less roasted flavor than Molly Moon's and the caramel chunks are a welcome addition and the perfect texture. Service was super friendly. We will definitely be back here wherever we are in the area!

Yelp
After a day of hiking in Ebey's Landing National Historic Reserve, we needed something to cool down. Lopez Island Creamery was right on the way and we stopped by to get: Double Scoop, Earl Grey (Limited), Blackberry, Skagit Strawberry (Limited), and Bow Blueberry ($8) - Amazing ice cream here - super high quality with low overrun and great body and texture. Even though it was a hot day, the ice cream barely melted as we ate it. The person behind the counter had to put in some muscle to scoop the ice cream as well. The double comes with four big scoops of ice cream. The Earl Grey had a great black tea and bergamot fragrance that really permeated the ice cream throughout. Since the flavor is more delicate as compared with the fruit flavors, some of the milky taste from the cream also lingers on the tongue. There was a small amount of crunchy bits inside - perhaps small pieces of tea biscuit? All of the berry flavors were quite good, with the Blueberry coming in first place, with a fantastic blueberry fragrance, the Strawberry second, and the Blackberry last. The Blueberry has chunks of frozen blueberry inside and noticeable pieces of skins. For the blackberry, the crunch of the seeds adds a nice texture. We thought it was a bit too sweet though - we prefer some of the natural blackberry sourness to come through. To be honest, other than the obviousness of the seeds, if you had made me guess what flavor this was, I wouldn't have said blackberry. That's honestly a minor nitpick - all the flavors were very high quality and delicious. We'll definitely be back to Lopez Island Creamery whenever we are back in the area!

Yelp
The ice cream is the best!! We had a group of seven of us and the staff was so patient and kind as we asked for several sample. We recommend all the flavors we got, it just depends on what sounds good to you! Over all, their flavor are light and creamy. They give very generous portions so I'd recommend a single scoop with two flavors. We would most recommend these flavors: Earl grey - by far my favorite! Light Earl grey flavor and creamy. Oatmeal cookie chip - everyone else's favorite!
google avatar

Katie T.

Yelp
Super cute, delicious ice cream and friendly service! Must- do stop when in Anacortes!
google avatar

Timothy K.

Yelp
We arrived shortly before close, apologizing for any inconvenience. The girl behind the counter was courteous and helpful. The wife went with chocolate brownie in a waffle cone and I went with peanut butter chip in a cake cone. The "single" scoop was actually at least three. It was huge and delicious. My wife demolished hers in award winning fashion. I actually hurt myself trying to keep up with her, but that's a personal problem and I can't hold the creamery responsible. Some of the best ice cream I've had. It's a good thing I don't live closer because it would be dangerous.
google avatar

Walter A.

Yelp
The ice cream was just excellent. The server was fantastic, giving us samples till we found just the right one to put in a waffle cone. The size of the scoop was enough to be a meal. It was also great that they had a water fountain there (and clean bathrooms)!
google avatar

Izaak F.

Yelp
Omg. Yes. What a great spot and thank god it's not walking distance to my house. I'd be in trouble. Go. Enjoy. Know that they will split scoop a single! A single serving is definitely enough for two people. Only get a double if you're feeding a crowd. Even a kid scoop is mighty generous.
google avatar

Stephanie F.

Yelp
What a great little find right off the path we were taking to Seattle from Anacortes after doing a whale watching tour. The chocolate brownie was bomb.com!!! If I'm ever back in the area I will be stopping here again!
google avatar

Jeanne L.

Yelp
Soooo delicious!! So, we've been coming to the area for years and this was our first time here! Why? Because this creamery is in an industrial type building that sits basically behind the car dealership and not on a road that you'd travel on just because. Luckily, we were on our way back to our location when my husband asked me to find an ice cream shop and this popped up! There's seating inside and out. Lots of flavor options. The ice cream is creamy, not icy. The staff was SUPER nice and the scoops are GINORMOUS!!!!!!!!! I wanted the Lavender Chocolate Chip (lavender is my all-time favorite flavor and not always found) and my hubby wanted the Lemon Raspberry Swirl. We decided on a double, scoop of each flavor, and we'd share. OMG .... DID I MENTION THE SCOOPS ARE HUGE! There was enough ice cream for a family of 4! We knew there was no way we were going to be able to finish it. We took the first bite. Delicious! We continued to talk about maaaaaaybe getting a to-go container. Another bite, then another .... and we finished that whole entire bowl!!! Lol. Definitely a place to stop when you're wanting some ice cream .... just maybe get 1 scoop next time or we share the Lavender. Either way it's a win!!

Yelp
First time at a creamery! It's hidden behind a few commercial buildings, so don't worry if the GPS leads you down a weird path. My boyfriend says he has never had better ice cream and was craving it so, we made an impromptu camping trip nearby. !Their scoops are humongous! If you only want a single (if you're thinking regular size), go with a kid's scoop. You can also split two flavors so if you can't decide, ask them to split a single or kids' size! My boyfriend had a single with 2 flavors and it came out to be 4 scoops. Earl Grey Tea was good, but I wish it had a stronger tea flavor. Still delicious and creamy (6.5/10) Lavender Chocolate Chip is an unexpected flavor I loved; not too heavy on the lavender and the chocolate chips complemented the floral notes very well (8.7/10) Bow Hill Blueberry is my boyfriend's favorite, perfectly balanced; I think if it were blueberry cheesecake, that would trump all their flavors (8.7/10) Chocolate Brownie is your regular chocolate ice cream with large chewy brownie chunks (7/10) Definitely, worth it, the staff was super patient with me since I tried a few samples, and I love the open concept design of the store!
google avatar

Viv S.

Yelp
On the way to Deception Pass, we stopped by the factory location for some ice cream. We brought their ice cream at the grocery store before, here offers much more flavors. Store Inside is clean with high ceiling. 3 staff on duty when we were there. Tried a few ice cream and sorbet flavors: strawberry, chocolate brownie, mint chip and passion orange guava. Ice creams are all very creamy with a strong taste of milk/cream. The passion orange guava sorbet wins my heart. It is so unique and refreshing! Would love to come back again and try more flavors. What a hidden gem!
google avatar

Yelp
I love local places and especially when they make their product on site. Theoretically you are getting the freshest and very best a company has to offer! My family all ordered different flavors and we were all very happy. Well done to the creamery. Clearly a new location. Staff was kind and offered samples. We will be back and have marked this location as a fav. **Almost forgot...the location is tucked behind some other businesses and isn't clearly visible from the main road.

Katherine P.

Yelp
Such a creamy cold summer delight! The ice cream was rich but not too sweet, the flavors varied including 3 seasonal and the waffle cone was fresh and crispy. The temperature of the ice cream was perfect, not icy, not drippy. Both those working scooping and those in the creamery creating seemed happy to be there. Took home 2 pints and wish my freezer had room for more.
google avatar

Diana L.

Yelp
Love this place!!! Very very generous Love this place!!! Very very generous portions- a single scoop is equivalent to at triple scoop and a kids scoop is equivalent to a large single scoop. Extremely yummy and creamy ice cream. They even have an option for my son who is allergic to dairy. Highly recommend this place if you are heading to the San Juan islands or deception pass.
google avatar

Mona L.

Yelp
Delicious I ecream. The teenage boys working were so friendly and helpful. Lots of great flavors like Island Joy and Mint chocolate cookie. Great portion sizes and fair prices. Clean, easy parking and lots of seating. One of the best ice cream shops in the area if you ask me! Will be back.
google avatar

Erica R.

Yelp
Had to try this place....drive by it all the time. Cute place in the factory. Service was superb...friendly, accommodating. The ice cream was so delicious! I got lavender vanilla and asked for a single scoop in a cup. They gave me three big scoops! Didn't think I'd finish but it was so very good, I finished. I highly recommend to stop here if you passing thru Anacortes. Deeelicious!

Tessa G.

Yelp
The sweet humans at the front let us have all the samples we could dream of. The ice cream is always great and the patio was perfect for a sunny Sunday.
google avatar

Sara R.

Yelp
Just the sweet ticket stop on our way back from San Juan islands -- located about halfway btwn Anacortes and the I-5 on ramp. The wild blackberry ice cream was so delicious! You can sit on a clean patio like space right outside the facility (chairs, tables, umbrellas). Cool that there's water fountain and restrooms available too! The servers were very cheerful, big smiles!
google avatar

B I.

Yelp
It's an Ice Cream shop at the factory. Can't get any more fresh and creamy than that. Flavors are good, service was good as well. Place had a clean but chill vibe. Enjoyed our visit.

Janet M.

Yelp
Best ice cream. so delicious and great ingredients and friendly service And a fun stop with my grandkids.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
If you like coconut, you must try the sweet coconut sorbet. It was absolutely scrumptious. The young people working here are very kind and focused on their customers. The entire facility was spotless. Plenty of indoor and outside seating!
google avatar

Kirsten B.

Yelp
Great stop on a sunny Sunday after a motorcycle ride! The single scoop is huge!! Had the pumpkin and the oatmeal chip! The best! Definitely will be back.
google avatar

Paige G.

Yelp
Stopped by on the way to a kayak tour at deception pass. We love this local brand, but wanted to check out the new store front. The ice cream was AMAZING and the space was super clean and handicapped accessible. It was an added bonus being able to see inside to the actual creamery! We will be back :)
google avatar

Paul L.

Yelp
Best ice cream local or otherwise. The guys working behind the counter are super helpful and courteous. Please support this local business.
google avatar

Gina H.

Yelp
Wow wow wowie scoops so big it dribbles down the side of your mouth. The kind of smooth creamy goodness you can only find once in a while. Their specialty flavors were great and their traditional flavors were better than most. Be warned their single scoop is definitely just a double scoop so be wary of portions. But if u want to be stuffed with top tier creamy goodness this is the place to be

Mary C.

Yelp
What a great ice cream maker!!! We love the chocolate almond crunch & the salted caramel swirl!
google avatar

Brock G.

Yelp
This is some damn good ice cream!! My wife and our girls were trying to find ice cream in anacortes but everything was closed because we got here a bit before season. By pure luck we got to sample lopez island for the first time. Fabulous! We'll definitely check out the pop up shop in anacortes when it opens up for the season! Also very excited for the new creamery site that is being built that will also sell ice cream onsite. so cool!!
google avatar

Emily Y.

Yelp
SOOO good!! Decided to stop by on a whim and it was so delicious and the service was amazing! You get to try flavors and the portions were so worth it :)

J. M.

Yelp
Great ice cream plus options for non-dairy eaters. I tried the non-dairy chocolate ice cream and cucumber lime sorbet, and both were very good. A split single scoop is plenty (see photo). Easy access off the highway between Anacortes and Mt. Vernon. Plenty of seating indoors and outside.
google avatar

Emily B.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, huge portions, and the friendliest staff. This place is only been open for a few weeks, but will now become a family favorite.

Tracy O.

Yelp
Amazing ice cream! Got the coconut and it was soo good! And the cone tasted so yummy as well.

Lucian S.

Yelp
Super good I love the Ice cream sandwiches they are huge. I have only been at the Creamery 1s as Child.

Ms. L. C. H.

Yelp
The very best ice cream ever. This company makes quality rich flavors. Love it! Gotta try it!
google avatar

Ella S.

Yelp
I can't say enough amazing things about this company. First off let me tell you, the ice cream is OUT OF THIS WORLD. Melt in your mouth deliciousness. Stop wasting your money on other ice creams, because you haven't lived since you have had theirs. You know the ice cream is good when they use local ingredients, and you can tell. You can taste it in all the different flavors they have and how creamy it is. I got the chance when I left town to stop at the local scoop truck and it was the best experience! They are all so beyond friendly and they truly love what they do. You can tell they love making the ice cream and making people happy. They are all down to earth and genuinely good people. I can't wait to go back! I can't recommend them enough! Please support your local business especially if it is for an indulgence!!! -the ice cream connoisseur

Vina S.

Yelp
Delicious ice cream, great atmosphere. Nice, friendly service. Worth a try! Beautiful scenery nearby.
