Philadelphia’s Best Puerto Rican Restaurants

"Lorenzo’s Cabana is a casual Puerto Rican, Mexican, and American food spot that's worth crossing the bridge for. A quarter of the Westville, NJ restaurant's menu is dedicated to American breakfast items, but they’re also serving up some pretty delicious Mexican food. The Puerto Rican menu, meanwhile, features pulled-pork style pernil, made in a slow cooker on the back counter, as well as bistec, pollo guisado, and chuletas. There’s a line of walk-ins for takeout and the phone is constantly ringing for pickup orders (your best bet is to call ahead and make sure they have the protein of your choice), but you can always snack on empanadas while you wait.`" - carolyn rivera, candis mclean

The woman working the counter was really nice and friendly. Unfortunately, the food was terrible. Basic steak taco order and the meat was overcooked and the shells were crunchy and dry. These were as “unauthentic” as it gets. Maybe they need a new cook, but this was definitely not worth the ride i took over here. Cheesesteak empanada was OK, but very greasy. Could only make it through 2 tacos. 😭

Google
Well worth the drive if you’re in the area! Super friendly staff and excellent food. I highly recommend getting their chorizo on anything you order. My absolute favorite item they have here is their chorizo BREAKFAST burrito. It’s insane and hands down one of the best burritos I’ve ever had. Their churros are on point, hot & fresh! We’ll be back!!!

Google
Definitely not authentic food , ...... I Don not taste the puertorrican out of my food not even the potatoes on my beans had any of my flavor , pernil was the only thing that was okay ,we got a tostada and is horrible just a whole bunch of lettuce and crunchy chicken if you're mexican I do not recommend you to get them tostadas you'll feel insulted, the carnitas taco is just a pernil taco just a heart breaking situation! Oh the green sauce is actually good and spicy!

Google
My son wanted empanadas for his birthday, so we stopped in last night for the first time and right off the bat the customer service was SO friendly and welcoming. We got beef and chicken empanadas and carnitas tacos with chips and rice, everything was perfect. My son was so happy even before he was so kindly given a slice of Tres Leche for his birthday! He can't wait to come back, definitely a place we'll keep going to from now on.

Google
Tried a spot called Lorenzo's Cabana located in Westville, NJ which has Puerto Rican, and, Mexican, and American food. I heard a lot of good things so I had to try. What we ordered: I order birria tacos which came with rice and beans (arroz con gandules). The birria tacos were so delicious. were flavorful tender, juicy, and very moist. It came with sauce on the side and I dipped my tacos in the sauce. Yum. The tacos were packed with meat. I personally was not a fan of the rice and beans (arroz con gandules) because it tasted bland. My family ordered a small to-go order of pernil (roasted pork) and she stated her daughter loved it. Very flavorful and moist. Atmosphere: I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was not crowded. We were seated right away. The place is not big, there are several booths and a large counter area. Right away I noticed the family pictures on the wall which was a beautiful reminder of family. Very clean place. Family atmosphere. I noticed a lot of customers that placed to-go orders that came to pick up their orders. Server: The server was attentive and took the time to make sure everything was to our liking. She was friendly and made sure we were happy with the food. The server by accident ended up bringing me another customer's order (apparently we ordered the same thing) and the owner apologized to other customer and I due to the mix-up. The other customer was there first. Pricing: The pricing was pretty reasonable for the amount of food you receive. Will we return: Absolutely, I would return and try other meals on their menu. I would definitely order the birria tacos. The food was fresh and delicious. The price point is good. It’s a clean place. It's great to support local, small businesses. Go and place your orders!

Google
This place was highly recommended by SJ Food Scene on FB. It’s a Méxican / Puerto Rican / American Food. Definitely authentic on both latin aspects! The American food is there for members of the parties who just want burger/ cheese steak/ sandwich. We had the tacos, al pastor/carnitas split between 10. Usually I am a Taco Bell dude- these were the best tacos, they were double wrapped perfect flavor, fully loaded meat! I tried the pernil , it comes with rice automatically. The pernil was good, a tad salty. The gandules rice is a must staple that accompanies the main dish perfectly! Food was absolutely delicious, servers were great , very attentive! There’s a brewery down the street. The bathroom had a changing table, place is super friendly/accommodating with parents who have little ones! Super affordable - amazing portions! Top 10 tacos as per NJ .com! Will return/recommend!!

Google
This adorable little restaurant has thee best Mexican Puerto Rican and American menu! Prices are super reasonable, food is absolutely amazing and Lauren and staff are so friendly and helpful. Do yourself a favor and go! Try a little bit of everything like we did 😁👍

Google
Al Pastor or Carnitas? When in doubt get both!!! 10 tacos 2 different kind, $16!!! Can’t beat it! This is a family owned Mexican AND Puerto Rican Restaurant in Westville, NJ. You get the best of both worlds here. This place makes some DELICIOUS food. @njdotcom named it best tacos in NJ, I’m going to have to agree! You need to order the tacos, rice & beans, pernil, & empanadas. Almost forgot they make the best Tres leches cake that I’ve had in my life!

Yelp
Ordered from grubhub. Now this place is on my list for places to go. Ordered a ten taco platter some empanadas. The food was crazy good. Highly recommend.

Yelp
Highly recommend - Food is phenomenal and excellent service! The family is always really nice and welcoming

Yelp
3.5 People here are so nice and genuinely care about their food. They were attentive and food was brought out quickly. I was checked on often. I ordered a few things so I can eat a bit here in the restaurant but take the rest home. I loved the beef empanada. Simple, meaty, a great option for $3. The pernil (roasted pork) was delicious and was a huge serving. I asked for hot sauce, and the owner recommended a verde sauce they made in house that was excellent. I wasn't as much of a fan of the pollo guisado. I thought it was too salty for my preference and not that much meat. Both main dishes came with very generous portions of rice.

Danielle N.

Yelp
Extremely misleading. The 'tacos' say plural - and on the pictures of their menu, they cost between $2.5 and $3 each - so we assumed that "tacos" for $5 or $6 meant 2 per order. We ordered 3 kinds for 2 people, thinking we'd get 6 tacos. Nope, it's one taco per order. Would not order from here again; overpriced and misleading. Edit after eating: very dry. We ate about half and threw the rest away. $30 wasted!

Joanne M.

Yelp
10 Street Tacos Last ordered on 11/8/24 Ten corn tortillas filled with a variety of meats, topped with cilantro and onions, reflecting traditional street food fare. This is what is advertised on Lorenzo's site on Door Dash. What I received was 8 chicken and two ground beef tacos. No onions, no sour cream, salsa or other toppings. Tacos were dry. I called and the owner said when you order the 10 Street Tacos they are all the same. I told him his menu indicated a variety and he told me I was wrong even though I told him I was right then looking at the item on his menu. He insisted I was wrong and told me to take it up with Door Dash, which I did. Door Dash refunded the cost of the order and told me they will look into this. Very poor customer service when you don't deliver what is indicated on your menu website and then argue with the customer that they are wrong. I would give 0 stars if I could.

Yelp
Not sure how I forgot to leave a review for this place after my initial visit, but here I am now. I found Lorenzo's during a search for empanadas on my way home from work. I stopped by and ordered a cheese steak empanada, chicken empanada, beef empanada, and chicken cheese steak empanada along with a small order of pernil with rice and beans. My order was ready in less than 15 mins. I barely made it to the car before I pulled out a cheese steak empanada and shoved into my mouth. WOW!!! What a surprise. The steak in the empanada was seasoned so well. I couldn't get enough of it. Later on I tried the pernil and rice, which was tasty as well. I vowed to revisit Lorenzo's again, and I made good on that promise today when I stopped in for more empanadas (shrimp, chicken cheese steak, and cheese steak). Everything I have tried is a HIT! I want to try the elotes, but it's only available on Saturdays. Needless to say, I may drive all the way there (30 mins) tomorrow to give it a shot. Thank you for making amazing food Lorenzo's Cabana. I'll keep coming back.

Yelp
This restaurant has been here awhile. So, I have eaten here before.. The interior is nicely decorated. The service is extremely pleasant and accommodating... The food is served piping hot. But the food is dry and bland. There are so many positives to this business that I like. I just wish the food was just slightly more flavorful.

George C.

Yelp
Stopped here on a road trip and the food was amazing, 10/10 would come back. Server was also very kind.

Robert C.

Yelp
Ordered takeout a month or so ago, and the quality of the food was so different from my previous takeout from a month prior to that. The food was so greasy and over-cooked, plus the cost of the #2 box went up over $9. I won't be ordering from there anymore.

Charles F.

Yelp
Food was very good. Tacos were the best I've had in south Jersey Would go there every week if it was closer.

Yelp
I love Puerto Rican food! I found this place while visiting the area. I am soo glad I found it and I highly recommend this restaurant if you enjoy the authentic flavors of Puerto Rican cuisine. I ordered the beef tacos and arroz con gandules. They were amazing and had some good flavor. I can't wait to return!
google avatar

Melissa T.

Yelp
Small, but mighty. We've loved everything we've had from catering to small platters and empanadas. The service is GREAT! Hidden gem!

Frank V.

Yelp
Food was really good! Highly recommend the pernil (slow roasted Puerto Rican pork), it was very juicy! The street tacos are amazing as well!

Yelp
I got food poisoning from the place I already forward my hospital bill to them too lol

Yelp
Whether you use the term Yaya, baba, nonna, abuela, or grandmother, many of you will connect with what that means when you arrive at their home or smell the aromas from their kitchen. Lorenzo's has that vibe. Nestled on Broadway in this little south Jersey town called Westville, where businesses never seem to have any longevity, is a little cafe that speaks of family style cooking, flavors and a tradition of stuffing bellies! The plates are enormous, the specials on point and the service is friendly, the people are real. I love supporting small business especially family owned and operated.

Jenny N.

Yelp
Spanish cooking for me is so important. We ordered arroz con gandules, which were just too few to see with peril, which very good but too small of a proportion. Also ordered arroz con habichules, and again the amount of beans were too few and over powered with too many potatoes. These were take out order. We will return to seat to eat in this restaurant. Our orders were supposed to be dinner proportion, We will be back and hopefully my next review will be more positive. Everyone deserves a second chances.

Yelp
Great food and super friendly customer service. Always happy with the empanadas and the birria tacos! Definitely recommend for take out or catering

Yelp
This place is definitely a go! Mexican and Puerto Rican = Mexicarican. I had to try this place after reading 3 five star reviews that were well deserved. The Cafe is spotless and the menu offers a little bit of everything. I had a spin on a Cuban Sandwich that included succulent Puerto Rican style pulled pork along with freshly sliced ham and Swiss cheese press grilled on a flat top, amazing. The friendly owners are a husband and wife team, one Mexican one Puerto Rican, together they combined recipes for a menu that has all the usual Mexican favorites with a Caribbean flare. Since I visited this place and spoke to a few people about it, I found out that their breakfast is outstanding as well.
google avatar

Steve A.

Yelp
No Puerto Rican up where I live, so this was an easy choice when visiting my friend. I read the great reviews and my eyes lit up at the huge portions. Amigos, you are all correct. My pork, rice, and beans weighed more than 3 other people's orders. It was a decent amount of pork atop a gigantic portion of rice - hey, if you're gonna have low prices, gotta make a profit somewhere. The flavors were all very solid, just wish there was more meat. Maybe an option for "double meat" in the menu, something I'd gladly pay $2 or so more for. Minor quibble. I also got a "half and half" tres leches cake for dessert. Never had chocolate tres leches. It was intriguing, maybe not something I'd get again, but points for trying something new. I am holding out on that 5th star for coming down earlier in the day and grabbing their special before they run out. The birria looked fantastic but apparently it gets pounced on as soon as they open. I'm also amused that you can get cheesesteaks here because, of course, you can get them anywhere near Philly. Until next time.

Yelp
We had catering from here for an engagement party this weekend and wow wow. We have dined here before and already knew the food was amazing but the catering was stellar. Loren took care of the catering and made sure everything was delivered and her and her team came and helped setup at our house. We got a bunch of the family box's of tacos and empanadas and it came with all the trimmings and even chips and soda. We also got the hoagie tray which had everything on it and was delicious!! Honestly what a great experience and great food, service and price. I highly recommend Lorenzo's and will be getting again.

Manny P.

Yelp
The food is out of this world. They give you a lot for your money. The owner is nice and personable. Greets you when you enter as if your family. The service is quick as well as personable. They go above and beyond to make sure the meal you get is fresh, hot and you don't leave hungry. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to my family and friends.
google avatar

Ashley P.

Yelp
Service was over the top. Everyone was so friendly and made us feel like family and so welcomed! The cheesesteak empanada, birria tacos, and pork quesadilla were all AMAZING!!!!! Why didn't I find this place sooner! Thanks JL Jupiter for sharing this amazing hidden gem located in Woodbury, NJ. So fresh, flavorful and delicious!!!! I would like to also note that the pork in the quesadilla was super flavorful and juicy. Top notch joint.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this place through scrolling my feed one day. Their taco boxes was what caught my attention, but I ended up ordering a Puerto Rican platter. Be sure to call ahead and ask for their meat-of-the-day as it changes daily. So I got Pernil (roast pork) and it comes with arroz gandules and maduros. I got a medium, but their serving size was huge. More to feed for two and still have left overs. I also ordered various empanadas. They were also huge, but a bit too greasy to my liking. Than on top of that I had a Cubano as well. It was a bit dry. Overall, the food was between ok and good. I've had better, but I wouldn't mind returning to try what I initially came for, the tacos. However, their menu is quite extensive. As they serve American, Mexican, Puerto Rican and Breakfast items. There's a small lot nearby if street parking isn't available. Due to COVID, call ahead to place your order and pay over the phone. They offer curbside too. Plus the lady who served me was a total sweetheart.
google avatar

M. L. H.

Yelp
Quite delicious, reasonable prices, friendly atmosphere. Only place I know of to get Mex and Puerto Rican food, and they do both very well. Food is apparently made to order so you have to wait just a little but it's worth it!

Emily M.

Yelp
I grew up in a place where there wasn't a lot of Spanish places to eat. My family has been going to this restaurant for years and it is one of our favorite things to do. The food is fabulous and fresh and the workers there always are kind and sweet and you can tell they really care about their customers. I also work in the same industry and ran into the owner at my job and she remembered my family and ask me how my mom is doing. Amazing food for a great price, Definitely should check it out.
google avatar

Raquel W.

Yelp
Ammmmmmmazinggggggg food. Shredded pork and rice and beans were delightful. The empanadas were fantastic (loved the chicken). Street tacos were incredible. Such a great experience, quick service and delicious food.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
Open for both indoor and outdoor dining for our first visit (July 2021). Good good, fair prices, friendly service, super clean dining area and restroom. We had the 10 Street Taco special and it was about $20 for two of us including beverages - good deal! We could only eat half of the tacos, so taking the rest home for late night snacks. Two thumbs up, we will be back!

Marlene M.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious food! We got the 10 taco box, chicken and beef. Everything was very fresh, very authentic and a great deal! We're already looking forward to ordering again! Everyone was very friendly, fast service too.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Finally ate here, and it was good! Nah, it was very good with the chicken empanadas being outstanding. We got the empanadas and tacos package that included rice'n'beans, chips and salsa. The steak tacos where tasty and I enjoyed the rice. Not only was the food very good, but the service was friendly and the price was good. I will be going back!

Zarina R.

Yelp
Pastelillos siempre ricos de carne y caliente. Si llamas a la hora del almuerzo te lo prepara y los buscas listos para llevar. El dueño súper Nice.
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
Such an authentic experience with the best Puerto Rican food I've had in years. The owner was so friendly and accommodating and the prices were beyond reasonable. 4 of us ate dinner for under $25. Will definitely be back.

Cait P.

Yelp
Amazing food! super friendly staff! authentic food and people! Highly recommend - massive portions too

Octavia G.

Yelp
Nice sized portions but the food lacked flavor. Totally disappointed to see that the pork was cooked in a crock pot! I'm used to Pernil being roasted. I think what made it worse was the owner openly blaming her newly hired cousin about a phone order taken wrong. Telling the customer at arrival, "my employee took the order wrong..." Clearly she was not trained and it was blatant! Several times during my wait she hesitated to ask for help and kept apologizing to myself and others. Totally embarrassing for the employee and a poor reflection on management. Plus, other family members were eating outside food with a makeshift child's playpen all in the dining area... I understand the value of small business and family business, but first impressions are everything. Not what I expected and my family and I won't be returning. Hopefully the cousin gets better support to do her job effectively without being belittled in front of others!
google avatar

Lorri E.

Yelp
Omg....I'm obsessed with this place. It has that magical combination of above-and-beyond customer service plus amazing food. The portions are HUGE. This being our first time, we ordered the Cuban sandwich and 2 burritos, plus loaded nachos, cheese fries and cheesy street tacos for 3 people. We got enough food for probably 10 people!!! Not complaining...we loved every bite, and will enjoy the leftovers for many more meals. We ordered and paid over the phone and the food was brought out to our car by an employee wearing an N95 mask....all very safe. We're looking forward to trying everything on the menu.

Cj T.

Yelp
0 customer service skills. Sad to operate a business in the same town, I certainly uphold better standards of operation, and customer service responses ;)
google avatar

Justin D.

Yelp
Found this place while visiting a friend in the area. We were looking for a place with great food and a place we could talk and this was a great find! So delicious, plates piled high, and the staff were super nice.
google avatar

Christian R.

Yelp
No fancy words or phrases, juts darn good food!! The owners are a young lady and her husband, classically trained by family right in the kitchen to produce authentic and FRESH Puerto Rican and Mexican food. Not a fusion place, real deal Puerto Rico and Mexican. They also have a menu of classic American foods for those picky kids that don't want to try new thing. So yes, a nice family place. You'll likely see the owners in the dining room with family members hanging out and lending a hand. Truly a family restaurant! I highly recommend going. While you're at it, stroll down the sidewalk - few steps and visit the brand new Westville Brewery!

Ashley B.

Yelp
My Husband and I recently visited on a Wednesday for dinner. When I tell you the food was AMAZING and DELICIOUS! I order the Birria Tacos, they were so tender, juicy, and made to order. My husband ordered street tacos with chicken a shrimp. The portions were large enough that we had left overs, and the prices are reasonable We will definitely be back!

Christie L.

Yelp
I have heard so many good things about this restaurant recently so we had to try it out. We just moved to the area so we are looking for good places to add to our "list". We got a cheese steak empanada, chicken cheese steak empanada and chicken empanada. We also tried the chicken quesadilla and yellow rice. The food was amazing!! The empanadas had so much flavor! The chicken quesadillas were so good and huge!! We ordered over the phone and when i got there the food was ready and hot! The service was amazing!! This restaurant definitely earned a spot on our list we will be back for sure!!

Yelp
I am leaving another review on this place because i want people to know how important it is to be thoro. This was my 2nd attempt to try the Pastor tacos & the 2nd time they had none. Owner recommend the the Enchilada tacos (spicy pork), again they were delish but Dry! I emphasized that cuz i ordered pico but got pickles instead. Not the end of the world but now i look forward to using my verde & rojo sauces...Nope, nada! I called back cuz at this point im irritated & was told that they ran out of sauces but didn't say that when i ordered. Im thinking maybe the Puerto Rican dishes may be the main focus of restaurant so try ordering something from that section next time?. I dont know...food is good tho so far.
google avatar

Lauren B.

Yelp
You can listen to my review of Lorenzo's Cabana on Episode 39 of the Just Grubbin podcast at 5:51. Like I said on there, it's the epitome of a mom and pop establishment and I would highly recommend it for anyone that enjoys authentic Mexican and Puerto Rican food. Their tacos especially the shrimp are some of the best around. The cheesesteak empanada was so delicious that I got angry that I didn't discover this place earlier. https://justgrubbin.com/2019/01/10/lorenzos-cabana-westville-nj/

Yelp
I'm Soo Very Happy to have driven by this place yesterday! I decided that my sister Cina and I were going to eat here tonight. I surprised her when I pulled up in front of this place. We were both so happy with our Empanadas and Tostadas!!! Cina watched the owner, Adam, prepare our food. It was all freshly made and absolutely fantastic. If you have not been here yet, you're really missing out on a great meal!!! I would give 5 stars if they had "Chili Rellanos" on the menu. This place is THIE SPOT to get Amazing Empanadas!!! They are Delicious!! They have Mexican, Puerto Rican and American food. The Prices and Great!! Go there tell them that I told you to go eat at their restaurant!! Order your food and sit back for a few minutes for them to prepare Your food for You!! It's not on a Steam Table drying out! The Pork was Soo Juicy!!! I am starting to get hungry again for another one of their Empanadas!! BTW, I have a very small stomach. And want to order so many things from their menu! I'm going to come back again for the other cool stuff I read on their menu when I got home. [[[Oh, and we noticed that they welcomed a man into the place to sit and rest while he was waiting for a Bus. And the guy even used the bathroom, with the owners permission. He didn't have to buy something either! JUST GO AND ENJOY!!!
google avatar

Chelsea H.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious so amazing from the main courses (we got cheesey street tacos) and chicken flautes. Dessert we got the tree leches cake half and half as well as the churro milkshake. Best dessert I've ever had
google avatar

Rochelle B.

Yelp
This is my first time ordering here and what breeze. The person who took the order was friendly and patient since I hadn't ordered before. My food was ready on time and it was good. I ordered the gandule rice or yellow rice with beans platter and a side of chicken. Unfortunately my rice was bit mushy, but so good. Next time I'll be getting an empanada or two. There was just not enough space for it this time. Two things. A small is enough for one meal no sharing and I appreciated the balance of seasoning definitely not overly salty. Thank you. Very good food.
google avatar

Cassie J.

Yelp
WOW! Such a hole in the wall kind of place which means it's AMAZING. Can't believe there are no reviews. The staff was so nice and down to earth! The food was a great mixture of American, Mexican, and Cuban. We got the Cuban sandwich and the cheesesteak and Cuban empanadas. Holy cow.. so dang good! Even the French fries (which I didn't even know came with the meal!) were perfect.... crispy yet smooth. Can't wait to go back and try the breakfast options! Thanks for offering some diversified food!

Yelp
A true hidden gem. I found out about this place from a trusted NJ food writer. The chorizo and el pastor tacos are on a different level of good. Guacamole is solid and I have tried a few different empanadas and they were very good as well. Don't let the hole in the wall nature of this place fool you...the food here is the real deal

Kevin F.

Yelp
A bit pricey for tacos $4 each but they were good. Rice and beans as well as guacamole were avg. and empanadas were good.
google avatar

Yelp
I found this little gem by accident. it doesnt look like much from the outside but the food was amazing! I got an assortment of dishes to see which one I would like.. and ended up liking them all

Kathy F.

Yelp
Delicious "home-cooked" Puerto Rican food, that is my go-to when I need real, not fast, food. It's so difficult to find PR restaurants. So glad this opened in my area.
