The Best Holiday Tamales in Phoenix | Eater Phoenix

"Los Altos is a well-known chain of Mexican-leaning international grocery stores in the Valley. Priced at just $2.89 each, the store-made tamales are an affordable and convenient option for last-minute pickups. The market also sells masa for home cooks, with notable flavors like strawberry, pineapple, and piña colada. Occasionally, the market hosts tamale-making classes for those looking to try their hand at the process." - McConnell Quinn

Google
Shoutout to the employees for keeping everything so clean and organized. This is art. Just look at the perfect rows of tomatoes and cucumbers…look at the oranges.

Google
Awesome selection of produce. Everything was good quality and had very competitive pricing. Totally recommend to shop here

Google
Always a great place to shop prices on at meat, vegetables, fruits, everything. I like shopping there

Google
The self checkout is not very good, it reads as an error a lot if you move a item too quick. Other than that, it’s a great store to get everything you need

Cristian

Google
I pull up for the chicken every week Monday-Thursday with 3 cucumber. How I feel showing up seeing the same employees

Cynthia Garcia

Google

Yelp
This is the third or fourth time we come and no carts at all, we have to carry our own groceries it's heavy and we never find any carts, we aren't the only ones who have that issue.

Yelp
Carniceria...panaderia...pescaderia...if you're looking for something that can be found in a spot ending in "-eria", Ranch Market won't let you down. I personally come here for the seafood, as it's my favorite spot to get fish and shrimp for tacos. Their tortillas, both the corn and especially flour (estilo SONORA), are delicious. If you're a carnivore, you're gonna be in heaven when you see the meat aisle. Even more importantly...spices! There are so many. And not just for Latin American dishes, but Middle Eastern stuff as well. This aisle alone is better than any other grocery store out there. There are two things I can knock them down a star for. The first is produce Although they've got some Latino staples here, I find the quality of a lot of fruits and veggies questionable. Yes, I understand Americans need to get over ugly produce and stop throwing away a zillion pounds of it every year. But it's harder to stomach when you peer over at a tub of oranges and they're all green. Yes, they turned out to be delicious, and maybe I am totally in the wrong for feeling squeamish. It just feels like all that disposable produce is just shipped here exclusively. It rubs me the wrong way. The second is the booze. The selection is bad, and the pricing is even worse! I've seen better deals at convenience stores. So while not perfect, this market is for everyone. You take pride in living in the southwest, so start eating like it.

Yelp
Everything looked great here. Went in early morning all the dishes were fresh. Produce looked good and lots of options. I will be coming back. This is also located next to Costco so you can fill up on gas.

Yelp
This place is a gem. I was craving fresh tortillas and we stumbled into this place. Not only did they have fresh tortillas, they had this amazing hatch chili queso. And their tortilla chips?!? what kind of magic do they make these with?!? I was in heaven. I wish that they had these stores back where I live, I would be shopping here all the time. The prices were super awesome as well.

Yelp
Nobody is there to help the customers. All they do is bullshit and play at the registers. I had to bag all my own stuff even with 3 employees there. The kid didn't even move so I can have a good angle to my cart.

Yelp
Got a 3 leches cake and as soon as we tried it, it tasted sour and off. Got to the more moist part and it as rotten. Super disappointed because it was for a birthday ... :/

Yelp
If Mexico were to pick up and move to West Phoenix, it would reside in Ranch Market. The closest thing I can compare it to is the Mexico exhibition at Epcot Center. It is large, colorful, has occasional mariachis and folklorico dancers...babies, Mexicanas shopping in full makeup and high heels and men with big mustachios...oh, and food, glorious food. This place is phenom. It has a beautiful panaderia, (albeit the pan dulces are a bit on the hard side-I don't eat them from here...go to La Purisima in Glendale), a carniceria, cremeria, fruteria...you get it. Ranch Market is like a proper mercado in Mexico. They also have a "cafeteria" where you can get menudo on Sundays (don't miss it), and all kinds of tacos, tamales, enchiladas, burritos, carne asada, etc. any other time of day. Their $2 breakfast burrito is enough to make anyone stop buying breakfast groceries. I live in Florida and absolutely LOVE going home to Phoenix and coming here everyday. The produce is always really nice and fresh, and CHEAP!! I've heard they only buy from farms in Mexico. So, although you might need a passport and a translator to shop here, I swear to GOD it is worth it.

Yelp
Very good vibes had a great experience here. Great customer service. I will continue to Shop here. Affordable prices.

Yelp
Maria Rojas

Yelp
I'm calling simply to ask if they fry fish at a starting time or all day and I've been calling since they opened it is now 7:45 am and they let it ring and then hang up. 0 STARS it's like they don't even want to be bothered with what a phone customer has to say.

Yelp
I have shopped here many times to get a few things. I really like the juice bar everything is fresh and so delicious. I sampled every single fruit water and the horchata. Each and every one was refreshing and tasty. I get the fresh tortillas still nice and warm. I still need to try the eateries inside. Maybe when I have time. This place is not as packed as it was when it first opened. I still remember when it was abco many years ago. My husband said it used to be an alpha beta before that. Wow.

Yelp
I wish I just sucked it up and braved rush hour traffic to go to the 16th/Roosevelt location it is not only far superior in quality, but cleanliness, convenience and friendliness. I was waiting in line to order some food to-go and one of the employees cut in line to get some tacos for her lunch break while chatting with the other employee, no awareness of those around her even customers and I was even standing pretty close to the counter it was obvious I was waiting to be helped. I also usually love getting the aguas at Ranch Markets but the containers they were in here looked so gross and dingy it was a hard pass. I wanted to get some other food like the chicken salad or some guacamole to go but they did not look fresh at all, everything looked like it was just melting and I didn't trust that the temperature was keeping them edible or that they were handled in a sanitary manner. The house made chips were awesome though! It was the main reason I came, they have TONS of bags everywhere around the store so I wasn't sure when they were actually made but they didn't taste stale so there's a plus! + I'd recommend just going to the location on 16th next time!

Yelp
Ok, so I'd be repeating my review of the camelback and 67th ave location. Ditto for Roosevelt and 16th st and southern and central. They are great! And new owners have done plenty to improve the locations! During the chilly evenings I recommend the champurrado. It's made different here than what I'm used to but it's delicious on its own right.

Yelp
I agree with the first review here my Moki W. That is how I felt when I first experienced Ranch Market, it is very cultural. However, the more you go there the more you see the real deal. So good thing for her she lives in Florida and only comes on occasion. I was, sadly shopping at this store weekly, since I can walk there. I say sadly because of the following observations; 1) meat bleeding on the check out conveyor belts and the cashier continuing to check out food. Can you say germs on everything. I went home and bleach watered my can goods. At other stores they stop instantly and clean the blood up when the meat the people in front of you are trying to buy bleeds all over the conveyor belt. 2) When purchasing scallops on sale witnessing a ROACH traveling on the side of the protective glass closest to the fish, as a few people waiting just watch it calmly. That gave me the hebegebies! 3) After months of refusing to shop there, stopping in to the Panaderia to grab some fresh Horchata, yum right. Yet, as I am paying I was reminded why I stopped going there because a roach comes out of the fresh fruit and travels across the counter (as I am handing my money over) and climbs up onto the receipt printer. After trying to give me a receipt the girl attempted to kill it, but it had moved on. OMG! Yuck, I am having flash backs!!! This was a week ago! Sorry folks I will stick to Fry's

Yelp
We went here today since we were in the neighborhood and I felt like Mexican food. After looking around for a while like we didn't know what we were doing at the deli because they don't have a freaking menu, we decided to order a couple of combos and a menudo to go. The guy who boxed up the menudo said something to another employee and they all laughed. We didn't know what they were laughing at until we got home. He scooped in two huge bones and a huge piece of inateable fat in the menudo so we didn't get as much food. I guess thats what an Asian and a Caucasian get going into a place like that acting like we don't know what we are doing. Great job Ranch Market for treating your non Mexican customers this way, would have given 0 star if I could.

Yelp
Gets really crowded, but they have the best corn and floor tortillas! They make them daily and are just delicious. They often had really good deals on food and stuff, especially on produce and meats. They also have a seafood market with fresh fish, shrimps and much more. If you ever come by make sure you get there really early in the morning or late at night, you won't have to worry about so much traffic and parking. Take some of their rotisserie chicken, you will thank me later!

Yelp
the signs are in the wrong spots, the aisles are narrow in most areas and way to wide in one or two. I can forgive all this, except for the lack of organization on where the items are. there is a problem if I spend 45mins finding salt.

Yelp
First thing first, this place is always extremely busy! Great produce and meat selections which always seem fresh. If you find yourself cooking a Mexican dish and are missing an ingredient that you couldn't find elsewhere, Im sure you'll find it here. They also have a Panaderia(bakery), and a kitchen, so if you're in the mood for some Mexican food they have a huge selection of ready to eat dishes!

Yelp
Love this place. Fresh meats, produce, deli, seafood and a wonderful restaurant of mexican food area.

Yelp
I love there teleras and pan dulce. Always a huge selection for everything you need. I always go here when I'm on vacation in AZ, to pick up handmade tortillas and bread for my menudo. Friendly staff, but super busy!! This place is always packed!!!

Yelp
You can tell this place treats its employees like crap. If you're familiar with real ethnic Mexican or Latin American food, you can tell this place is less than half of what we're used to. Food is all frozen and reheated, same with bakery products and the produce is so over priced. And I dislike how the store managers are, they're like the owners little puppet. Like any other businesses you can tell they pressure way too much on their employers for the mediocre job they're doing. Quality has hanged over time as well, I don't remember the bakery bread being this horrible, I used to love going for the bread but this whole new owner and staff isn't working. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
