Yelp
Another great, reasonably priced mexican option in Davis Square - that can compete with Tenoch. You can almost get 3 tacos here for the price of 1 at The Painted Burro!
First, I know they are still working out the kinks since this just opened, but I wanted to point a couple things out:
They should really think about swapping the location of where you order and where you check out. I went in for lunch today, unfortunately at the same time as about 15 other people, and we started asking each other "where do we order?" It's a super-tight space with no "ORDER HERE" sign or a queue organizer for possible lines. So it was confusing and isn't the best first experience when walking in the door off the street. Plus, people get agitated if they think someone is cutting the line/getting food before them, so this current set up makes those situations unavoidable.
I went for my taco trifecta (chicken, steak, carnitas) on corn tortillas with everything, to-go. This way I had a sampling of what they're offering. Because they were so busy, my corn tortillas sat on the flat top for a while as they helped other customers (with burritos, bowls, etc.). So, when I went to dig into the tacos, they fell apart and I was only able to eat the filling. Luckily, the filling was delicious (even though the steak was a little chewy), so I was happy to shovel it with a fork. But as a "taqueria" it's something they need to address.
DIFFERENTIATORS
- They have a number of fillings options outside the usual meat and veggies. I noticed different types of fish tacos, battered or coconut shrimp, and a friend plantain burrito.
- The have a number of cremas that are used on the tacos and burritos. A really nice addition instead of just the usual plain sour cream.
- Real guacamole and fresh pico. I see you Anna's Taqueria (they're "guacamole" has sour cream in it to thin it out).
I'll be back soon to try out one of the burritos!
