Los Angeles Athletic Club

Went for a DTLA 5th anniversary vacation, this was a great place to stay! The pool, sauna, jacuuzi were excellent for relaxation and I'd recommend using on day 1! The staff was very friendly and helpful as the place is big and has a kind of U shape for the athletic areas and access to the garage elevators from the first floor. Definitely get parking, well worth it and easy ticket in and out! View from the top level is also gorgeous (access on the west side of the building . The sports restaurant was decent for lunch, nothing special so a little pricey for what you get. The room was spacious, clean (save for a couple smudges of something on the curtains), and just keep in mind the place is old school so no 55" TV, but still usb charging alarm clock, big windows, thankfully only $3 water, nothing insane. Irons get hot fast so be careful of the setting. The pool area and locker rooms were incredibly clean, that's where the sauna, steam room, and jacuuzis are - everything you would need with a couch and TV area too. Daily lockers with settable combinations, tons of towels. Really the best part.

This was my first time at the club, and I was genuinely impressed from start to finish. The hotel itself is exceptional—elegant, comfortable, and one of the best I’ve ever stayed at. The athletic facilities are top-notch, offering everything you could need for a great workout. Room rates were surprisingly affordable for the quality and service provided. Every staff member we encountered was friendly, attentive, and professional, making the stay even more enjoyable. Between the facilities, the rooms, and the welcoming atmosphere, this place exceeded all my expectations and is easy to highly recommend.

I’ve been staying at the athletic club for many many years and love it here after they being away for two years. I walked in the door and was greedy like I had left only yesterday. Melissa was fabulous.! She remembered me even down to the fact that I always request a tea kettle in my room. We had a great conversation. She remembered my sister who often travels with me and as a bonus gave me an upgrade. The staff here is wonderful. They take really good care of me as an older woman traveling alone, and I enjoy the manly comfort of the rooms. Another plus for me is that as a photographer I love to go up on the roof and gaze at the world around me. And yet another plus is that there are some great restaurants within close walking distance. I recommend HATCH and bodega Louis. Love this place and will return again and again.

Positive: The pool Negative: There was a used needle in the bed that my daughter was sleeping in!!!! And they wouldn?t comp out stay!

Rooms are incredibly dated & very small. The tap wasn’t attached properly. Bathroom felt dirty. Bed sheets not put on properly I’d say 3* is generous here. Parking is fine but if you have suitcases like me there is no help carrying it down / up stairs from anyone. Gym / sauna every time was over crowded I couldn’t get in the sauna one day. Wouldn’t reccomend this hotel.

My significant other and I spent a day and night here, and we are looking for excuses to come back again. The whole building and its rooms are beautiful and have a very classy, early 1900s aesthetic, instead of the average sterile gray or beige you expect in most hotels. The range of athletic amenities is remarkable; when you stand in the gym and see the pool below you, the track around you and all of the workout equipment and classic architecture, it's hard not to be impressed and motivated to workout. I think anyone who is fitness oriented or who appreciates classical style architecture will have a great time at this hotel. I'm looking forward to coming back and checking out all the rest of the resources here.

Great gym, lots of space and weight, plus full squat racks, up to 100lb weights. Sauna, steam room, all top quality. Rooms are nice, feels like it has heritage. The one downside is that when coming home at 1am, we were unable to get into the hotel even after pressing the ringer and waiting for 15 minutes, and couldn’t get in until someone else staying there came down to get their DoorDash order and opened the door for us.

I checked in to my favorite hotel today! Checking in was smooth and easy per usual! I came to have dinner at the Invention lounge and the food was spectacular! They had live jazz music and it was really good! I was impressed by how many people were there on a Sunday I had never seen it this packed on a Sunday! I want to highlight my waitress “Georgy” She was amazing not just to me but to everyone she interacted with! I also noticed she was helping serve like 50-60 people maybe more…… I think hard work is commonly becoming more and more rare so when I see it I love to shine light on it! This is still my favorite place!!!

This is a private, members-only club. If you happen to be able to get in, and are in downtown Los Angeles, I would recommend the Cobb salad (add chicken) for a tasty dinner. A wonderful spot with fantastic hospitality and amazing ambience. I have reciprocity with another club, so I was able to use the amenities (shower, etc.) as I rolled into Los Angeles after a long drive.

Thank you to my trainer Alex Derdian! Alex is knowledgeable and kind. He helped me learn that becoming buff and swole takes time and is a mindset. Over the three months that we worked together, I went from a complete gym novice to being able to bench press 60 lbs.

I've been a member of Equinox, Soho House, and all the high-end clubs, but I have to say--I've been the happiest here at Los Angeles Athletic Club. The experience is just unmatched. The coworking spaces are fantastic, making it easy to get work done in a stylish and comfortable environment. The speakeasies are such a cool touch--perfect for unwinding after a workout. And the food? Solid. Always enjoyable, with a great selection. The locker rooms are extremely well-maintained--clean, spacious, and hygienic. I've never had an issue finding a machine, and the people here (both staff and members) are genuinely kind, creating a great community and good vibes all around. If I had to suggest anything, it would be amazing to have coffee and tea available at all times in the locker rooms. And adding a touch of eucalyptus like they do at Equinox would be such a nice spa-like upgrade. Other than that, I'm beyond impressed. This place offers everything you need and more, in a refined yet welcoming atmosphere. So glad I joined

Been here many times for conferences and it's just such a beautiful space. The staff is really nice. The food is great. But oh the atmosphere...add in some drinks? It's a little piece of heaven.

A member's only exercise and sports facility -- there is no nicer place to work out than at the athletic club. I came here for a morning workout alongside one of my friends (who is a member) and was blown away by all their state of the art, new exercise equipment, their inventory of machines, free weights, and various areas to run, stretch, or do some mat work. There is everything from a track, a pool, club house, working area and you can literally spend the entire day here being productive. I especially loved how clean the facility felt -- not having to endure the struggle of reracking weights the whole time and being able to see facility actually cleaning and maintaining the area. Spa - If you are somebody who also loves the spa -- again, there is so much this place offers. From a steam room, dry sauna, hot tub, and even cold plunge -- I was able to enjoy a full intense workout and then decompress just a few floors down. Hotel - I enjoyed working out here so much that I even switched hotels to stay at the top floor of the athletic club. The rooms are really clean, has a luxurious vintage feel -- and the house keeping makes sure your stay is really tidy and enjoyable. Huge shout out to Melissa who helped during my stay, she was super professional, friendly, and just made my stay really enjoyable with her charming smile and assistance. Would recommend signing up here as a member and if you only visiting for a short time to stay upstairs in one of their reasonably priced hotels.

The athletic club itself is amazing with great service, many options and a perfect locker room. A nice place to stay if your downtown L.A. . The food noooooot so much. Eat elsewhere!

Shady 3rd floor bar. I got a margarita because a friend had one, and it looked good, but they put mine in a martini glass for some reason. So when I went to get a 2nd drink I wanted something else. The bartender told me they could make me a paloma no problem, but they made it with orange juice. Tasted like TRASH. Don't tell someone you can make a drink when you don't have a key ingredient. Today I get this notice from my credit card. No, I did not tip 82%. I bought two $17 drinks that were not good. The bartenders "closed my tab for me" which I thought was weird, and now I see I was charged extra and incorrectly. At first I thought the bartenders were new and lacked skill now I see that this place is just terrible. BEWARE.

Do not join this club if you are gay or over 60. The athletic training staff are homophobic and dismiss people over 60 as irrelevant. I had a situation with a trainer who was repeatedly interrupting my workout by walking over me as he trained two clients across the gym. After repeatedly asking him to stop, I was told that "I was in the way." This is an organization for its members not cocky, homophobic trainers who act like they own the gym. When I spoke with Ed Gemdjian, the athletic director, about this situation he told me that "he could see both sides." This is how the Athletic Club leadership deals with its members when they complain. I have not encountered this type of dismissive homophobia since a young man in the 1970's. I will be cancelling my membership and encouraging others to do so until the club does some basic training of its incompetent staff.

This is a very nice place. People are great. Was there during remodel. The city just needs to do something with the outside. They actually warn you not to go to the left out the front doors after dark. Lots of crime and just bad people around the area.

We've stayed at the LAAC twice in the last couple of months. Staff is overall excellent. Particularly Melissa at the Front Desk and Sierra in the bar, who makes the best manhattan. We've eaten at Top Player several times and found the food to be outstanding and a good value, especially the steak and salads. The rooms are tired and dark but in our opinion they are a good value for money. We'd stay again. We didn't use the gym so I can't comment on that aspect.

We had a group of 8 dining in the trophy room. Everything was so good !! I had the chicken , others ordered sea bass , and short ribs we enjoyed our dining experience and service was exceptional!! Highly recommend

Someone please explain how the staff can act stuffy like this is a prestigious private club when in reality it's a public hotel with a gym and conference rooms... Nice vintage fixtures sure...British theme music -- but like anything beautiful ...it's the inside that counts. Now I'm all for historic places and this place is a well of nostalgia and I get it wasn't always open to everyone but it's 2022 now so no one should be treated like is 1950 pre civil rights era. MLK must be turning over in his grave. Please someone tell a few staff members there - we've advanced. Still - Always dear to my heart... been visiting this place since 2003.... and for most part it's been amazing. The bar is good but overly expensive and that shrimp was not good. Shrimp is pink and should curl. Those white shrimp and grits have no flavor - I've also had better customer service at the $.99 cent store.

As a member of 7 years, I've finally reached wits end with this place. The supervisor promised me new equipment 4 months ago. All the bougie rooms at the LAAC sure are nice - to sit in - but at it's core - this is supposed to be a gym and it's lacking. I reached out to that supervisor, no response. The gym equipment there is from the year 2005. Yet they charge upwards of equinox prices. The current staff (aside from 1-2 of the newer gents on the 5th floor) are rude and dismissive. If you are an early riser and want to work out before the work day, they are not open. If you want a cup of water at 630, good luck - you dont get that because most of the staff arrives late to their shift or starts at 7am. Not sure what it is. Over it.

This is without a doubt the coolest gym I've been to ever!!! Looking forward for this beautiful club to reopen soon.

I have been a member since 2018 and to be honest, I wish I had joined this club sooner. I have met a number of staff members here over the years, but Melissa definitely stands out as one of the best. The ambiance here is amazing, there is a gym, basketball court, swimming pool, hotel, restaurant (great food) and more all under one roof! Also it was very easy to add my wife and son to my membership for a minimal fee! Safe to say I will be a member here for a long time!

Saw an event on a website for here. Called and asked if it was a public event and the person was so rude, saying only events are for members, which I understand. They just assumed I was didn't have the money to pay. I've been so Sohohouse etc. I would have willingly paid a membership for access to the event, I just wasn't sure because I saw the event on the website. I'll be telling all my friends with means to avoid this place. Trying to hard to be elitist. I'll keep my money at Soho House, PJs, and Ritzs. This place is trash customer service and extremely snobby.

Early morning workout after a huge Thanksgiving dinner is a must! This is the place to be! It originated as an all men's club but that has certainly changed. With some of the gym still under construction, the full-length basketball court and an Olympic size pool will wow you. You can walk around and still see a hint of the old boys club, with a rustic library and an enormous sitting room. You should definitely visit this gym/spa, you wouldn't be disappointed!/

Best gym in DTLA. A true oasis in a very busy and hectic urban environment. The restaurants is very standard, but fitness center is top notch.

WOW! I am just blown away by this place. Talk about extremely nice. I heard it used to be a gentlemen's club (no, not that kind!) and was established in the 1880's. Let me tell ya, this place has done a great job at preserving the history and the originality of this facility. I love places that do that. My bf told me about this place and got me a guest pass to check out the facility. The facility is located in the heart of downtown and they have a parking lot that validates for parking. Walking into this place, I felt like stepping into a scene of a movie. Like the Tower of Terror Hotel (in Disneyland) at its prime time or like a scene from Titanic. This place is super upscale and nice. It's more like an athletic center mixed with a social club. Dues are not cheap, you have to pay a hefty $300+ initiation fee and dues range from $122/mth+ depending on your age. They have two tiers, the one above includes some kind of yacht club membership too. But with that amount of $, think about what you get, and how it weeds majority of the general public out, which isn't a bad thing when you want to spend time on your extracurricular activities in peace. After work and weekends, I want nothing more than to unwind and be in peace, which is exactly what this place does. You're not dealing with the normal crowd or basicness here. LAAC is HUGE! So many rooms, 12 levels, has a hotel in it, bars, amazing pool, workout amenities, spas, locker rooms, pool room, kickboxing room, aerobic studio, pilates studio, basketball and racquetball courts, a kids club...etc, etc. Their pool reminds me of the pool in the show True Blood where that vampire queen was nested in, any True Blood fans know what I'm talking about? By the men's locker room, they had a small window where you could see into the pool...you could pretend like you were Shamu and swim up to that window and scare people! Haha. They have a bar/restaurant there that serves amazing food and drinks. Food ranges from $12-$30, one drink runs from $12+. You have to be a member or stay in the hotel in order to partake. Live jazz band playing and a cozy, comfy atmosphere. Lighting is on point. Oh yeah and my fave, no cell phones allowed! At least in the dining area...which I personally think is a great rule to enforce! Forces us to be present. Anyways, left here feeling super classy and rich last night. I'd say this place is worth the dues and would definitely choose this place over Equinox. Thanks for having us LAAC! Hope you'll be seeing more of us soon!

Not a great lunch experience. My club sandwich was meh, the fries were soggy, and all delivered late. The final straw was getting the check, then paying by credit card--which took over a half hour.

LA best secret gem. Full service gym in spotless facility downtown. Very reasonable membership fee. Before joining another gym check this out.

Great facility With an old-school high-end feel. There is great customer service and it feels at the security is on point. Has all the amenities and final touches that a top end gym should have. Has a nice track, basketball court. They have league games in the evening on Wednesday and Thursday. The full length Olympic style pool is so nice! There's Even a pretty nice restaurant that serves small bites and other snack-ish food.

Updating my review now that the women's gym is (finally) open. A much better experience and a better value (but still on the expensive side). The remodeled area is spacious, features a big jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. The showers are now big and sport Bigelow shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Fresh lemon and cucumber water, too. You don't have to check out a key for the lockers anymore, either (and there are a ton of them) and lots of vanity space, too. A shout out to the staff who work the desk and clean the locker rooms--they are wonderful, as are the front desk staff on the first floor as you enter. Finally, if you take classes and want a killer work out, try one of Catherine's or Benita's fun classes!

LAAC is now so much better than a few years ago! I was a member here until about 5 years ago when it was dilapidated, in a sorry state: the jacuzzi in the men's side was not working and the lockers were gross. Now, the lockers are new and the jacuzzi is hot with strong jets. Some of the older workers were still there, and they actually remembered us. My only suggestion is to get better towels because they can easily replace sand papers.

I have been a member for over 6 years. Recently I needed to go on hiatus due to covid. This should have been an easy thing to do as I have been a member for quite some time. But......the new folks in charge of membership/customer-service are rude, do not reply in a timely manner and seem to not care about retaining members. I have been met with absolutely no care, no customer service and no care about it's lack, I have called, gone by the club and written emails and have gotten the grand total of 1 very rude response. This is no way to operate what is meant to be a high-end business.

Horrible member services. I have been trying for more than a week to cancel my membership since I have moved. I was transferred to membership department and got voicemail 4 times. I left messages and never got a call back. I complained when I called again and said I would not accept being transferred to the membership department. I was told by the person who answered the call that they would personally send me the form I needed to fill out to my email. We confirmed my email and nothing has been sent. Finally got director of operations who promised me she will send the form. I am not holding my breath. Member services needs some serious quality improvement.

Save the headache and sign up for John Reed or Equinox or even Golds Gym would be better than this disaster. This is by far one of the worst clubs ive ever been apart of. Their lack of organization skills begins with the person who registers you and your information and is consistent through management who hasnt replied to my emails in months, they dont return my calls, and Ive never received my membership card since I enrolled in December. I referred a couple of friends who also experienced the lack of organization from the beginning. I had an email chain back-and-forth with someone in management about why I never received my membership card and why It was sent a Texas if I live in downtown Los Angeles and they accused me of having my card and not being able to use it or something ridiculous that was very offensive and still never heard back from them after accusing me of lying. They sent an email saying that they hired a new company to improve their management but I have yet to see any of the improvements, it still seems like the same unorganized mess.

I've been a member since 2018 and it's all you can ask for in a hotel/gym/spa/banquet center. It's got it all! A great spot for dinner and drinks after work or casual outing with friends or family. With a membership you get group exercise classes with highly qualified trainers, access to a beautiful state of the art locker room with amenities, and friendly, caring staff. The membership dues are reasonable, and you can add a spouse for a nominal fee. I've taken family there for special events, including Mother's and Father's Day. It's legit! An absolute gem in the heart of DTLA!

Was a member here from 2017 to 2020. I joined because of the five-lane swimming pool and incredible locker room (wet and dry saunas, hot tub, tons of showers, plenty of TVs, etc). There is also a large weight room, indoor squash courts, basketball court, indoor track, rooftop amenity deck, restaurant and bar, speakeasy, poolside cafe, and plenty of great places to get some work done in a quiet setting. If I still worked in the area, I would continue going to this facility which provides the most bang for your buck of any comparable gym. Loved how the membership rates vary based on age bracket, making it more affordable for the junior members. The staff was constantly cleaning, putting out towels, and making this a true oasis in the heart of DTLA. The facilities were rarely crowded, and weekends were often extremely empty, which made this a great place to work out and spend time. Only complaint was regarding the parking situation, because the attendants at Olive Park were sometimes rude and not very helpful, despite having a license plate reading parking control system that failed often and made paying for parking a pain.

I have been a member for two years now. The club offers wonderful facilities, services, work space, cleanliness and in particular have staff that are absolutely great. Coming in for dinner, workout or staycation, staff like Melissa and Kash on the ground lobby make you feel welcome. Isabelle on the 5th floor lobby and Sonia in the restaurant always looking to accommodate. It's an experience and a treat always when visiting the club.

PROS: The members are genuinely nice and I like the basketball court. Sofia at Invention is a sweetheart. CONS: LAAC is the most tone-deaf management I've had the misfortune of dealing with. Membership dropped the ball on my initial membership materials. The facilities are old and out of date or simply not ready (rooftop, fine dining restaurant, etc). The staff was so rude to my mother! she said wouldn't return. I was willing to overlook all this bc it is close to my home but then they couldn't get their billing correct (the only mistake they admitted to). After I sighted the array of mistakes above to the club, I offered to part ways amicably. But instead of even an apology for their obvious mismanagement, they doubled-down and refused to come to a middle ground between their poor performance and my desire to leave. I had such high hopes and wanted to be happy member but leadership matters. LAAC is not ready. Because of their history with the city and the historic elements of the building, I do hope they get there. Until then, LA has so many stronger options. I advise to look elsewhere.

I love this quaint place! It still holds its historic feel while transforming just enough to meet current needs. The gym and pool... so big and amazing! My favorite is the jazz nights on Thursdays. Such amazing talent, cool old wood bar and dark mood lighting. It's perfect. The rooftop of this place is phenomenal!!! With the height of the building being mid-rise among many high rises it allows for a unique view of the city - a location perfect for a big bash or special occasion.

The facilities are decent and most of the staff is friendly but they blatantly discriminate against certain members.

I had a day pass and the the doormen kick me out saying my pass has expired!!! Very rude door men! Not coming back here! My friend gave me a day pass for my birthday. I was excited to get to know this place and maybe join. I walk into the front door and the doorman was so rude right off the gecko! I show him the card and he said it's not valid and took it away from me. Saying he can't give it back to me and it's expired!! What!!!??? He was so unprofessional and rude beyond human kindness. I'm truthfully disappointed in LAAC staff and service. I was looking forward for spending a nice relaxing day at the pool and getting to know this club and I got kick out. When I ask him if I can have my gift card back he say no. It's property of LAAC. He ruined my day! What a disappointment!

Beyond thankful and grateful to have found this glistening oasis gem in the heart of Gotham city aka DTLA. Class, style and tone that I have oh so craved. Thank you LAAC for everything!!

Worst club ever. I remember why I didn't want to be a member of this place. Not only is it beyond overpriced when they ask an initiation fee of $300 but for the monthly membership of close to $200/month, to be treated so poorly is super unclassy. Staff here was classically rude and I am grateful they declined to offer me membership here. I would never return to a place who just wants money and isn't even worth the price of a 24 Hour Fitness membership. If you like wasting money and being treated substandard, come here and join. Otherwise, save your hard earned money on a gym and places where they treat you with respect and class.

Ordered the duck for dinner. Half the plate was smeared in sour cream... pretty disappointing.

Wow. George the boxing instructor is the real messiah. Punch after punch, hit after hit I'm brought closer and closer to enlightenment...and the chiseled body I was born to have! George pushes you hard. He really knows how to bring out the best in you!

The Swimming Pool here is THE BEST in the CITY: I've tried them all, believe me, and this one is superb, superior. True, the cost to swim involves membership in the L.A.A. C. but there is a certain charm to all the mahogany and some of the formal events are really a lot of fun. ITIS NOT INEXPENSIVE but this is one case where you pay for what you get. They also have a panoply of classes, basketball coaching, swim programs for CHILDREN, which are really tops (you won't find abetter coach than Johnathan Smith-anywhere: TRUST ME). Once the new area for women is opened, which will happen within the next few months, I think there will really be an entirely new set of reasons to join the L.A.A. C.

Wow! Just... wow. Beautiful building in the heart of DTLA! Professional staff and friendly staff. Pricey but worth it if you want to be pampered. Would recommend to friends and family. Did not eat here. Rooftop views are spectacular!

Classy, Elegant, formal absolutely pure class. Being a member is the benefit of the entire experience. Though guest will feel part of the club.

If you are nostalgic for the pre-Title IX days when women could be excluded from organized sports then this is the gym for you. For the second consecutive year, a flyer advertising a "Lawyers Basketball Tournament" features only images of men. Two years in a row I've had to ASK "Can women play?" The answer seems to be yes, but they certainly have no interest in advertising that. Perhaps the organizers think lawyer=man just like they think basketball player=man. Perhaps they have just never contemplated the idea of a woman playing basketball. Either way, it's a bummer.

I always have a positive experience coming here, but I wouldn't consider the LA Athletic Club a luxurious five star place yet. LAAC is more of a social club than anything else. The building reminds me of something that used to be a fancy exclusive hangout spot, but the owner decided to only upkeep certain rooms and ran out of &*@(!& to renovate everything else. Here are some PROs & CONs about LAAC CONS: - The elevators buttons don't always work. - There's an excessive amount of staff waiting for an elevator, pushing carts or cleaning the carpet EVERYWHERE - Drinking fountain's water pressure in the gym work sometimes - Fans/AC is rarely on. It could get hot. - Members have to pay $2 for parking - Carpet on the top floor to the roof is black - Extremely old/unusable patio furniture on the roof - The reserved locker area (there's a long waitlist) and the free locker area is like night and day. - Public locker area usually smells and can get crowded - $$$ PROS: - There's an indoor track - The gym is not as crowded as the conventional gym - There are plenty of machines and free weights - HUGE olympic sized pool - Volleyball/Basketball (one or the other) court - Amazing luxurious mini sauna/steam room/showers - FREE soap and shampoo avaliable - FREE full and hand towels avaliable - They have pretty nifty events (I took the entire family here for mother's day and my mom absolutely LOVED the food and the decor) - Nice bar area - Pretty good food tl;dr? I wouldn't join LAAC if you're solely looking for a top of the line gym. I think you need to explore the other amenities at LAAC (go to the events, dinners, bars, etc) to fully enjoy and appreciate it . Some rooms are really nice, while others need a lot of love. Overall, I really like LAAC, but I know it's not for everyone.

I never thought I'd pay over $100 for a gym membership, but here I am. I absolutely love LAAC, I've been coming here for 4 months now and I love it more everyday. They have a basketball court, full restaurant and bar. The women's locker room is fully stocked with spa, whirlpool, and sauna. They also have a huge pool where you can swim laps or bring your children to swim. LAAC is also a hotel so rooms are available to stay in. Customer service is amazing! The only reason I gave it 4 starts is because the elevators are HORRIBLE. but they're being remodeled, so let's see how that goes! Check it out for a gym sesh or a stay in DTLA, you won't be disappointed!

I am impressed. What used to be an ancient dingy relic from a foregone era appears to be making a comeback. I used to come here as a young kid with my grandfather back in the early 80's. I just came back for a wedding and am blown away. The service is great. The amenities are top notch. I love the various bars and restaurants. What a great place to just come and hang out, work out, entertain, or conduct business. If I lived in town I would easily join and make this place a part of my regular routine.
