How Peter Meehan Allegedly Created a Toxic Work Culture at LA Times Food and Lucky Peach | Eater

"The paper’s food newsroom became the site of a fraught reckoning after staffers confronted a leadership style described as creating a pervasive culture of fear: employees recounted public beratings in group Slack channels, intimidation around assignments and deadlines, and allegations of sexual misconduct. A tense Zoom meeting and subsequent locked Slack posts prompted management to open an HR investigation, the editor offered his resignation and apologized, and the team pushed for regular updates, new leadership hires, and greater representation in staffing as they sought accountability and transparency." - Meghan McCarron

There are wonderful free tours (with reservations required) of the printing plant. The papers move at speeds of 30 miles an hour, and each stack of bundles is 2000 pounds. Each bundle costs $600, and a 30 foot tall stack of wrapped bundles lasts approximately three months. Good reminder to recycle! The plant is very exciting and a fun place to tour.

Signed up for weekend newspaper delivery - you'd think they'd want to keep new subscribers, right? They failed to deliver on THE FIRST DAY. I called to get it redelivered, they didn't do that either! What's the point of paying you guys to give me your newspaper if you fail to deliver it at all completely on the very first scheduled delivery day? How bad is your delivery system??? Jesus H. Christ!

Canceled my subscription after the LA Times gave opinion on all voting measures except the most important one: Harris. How can they just tuck their tail between their legs and not have an opinion on this. We have one candidate who is clearly a leader for the country another who is a felon and tried to steal the last election. The LA Times finds too hard to form an opinion? Done.

Google
Total joke subscription service. Tried to sign up my mom for print delivery. It was digital only. They couldn't convert her subscription, only cancel. And now that they did, she won't qualify for the new subscriber delivery as she was considered an existing subscriber even though we canceled the first day and I assure you my 77 year old mother didn't see the digital version. So they were helpless managing their own system and won't honor their own promotion. Guess I'll be getting her the Washington Post. These folks deserve to go out of business. Sad. You'd think with the current state of paid journalism, they would care about a subscriber like this.

Journalist, Mr Grandon, I watched him on PBS Newshour, for the first time, Friday, Excellent coverage of Presidential election. Always great to see a new Journalist

If your an American 🇺🇸 don’t seek services from the LA times foreigners have purchased the company and they have change the policy that u have to have internet and pay with a Credit Card 💳 in order to do business with them. You can’t physically go into that big building and pay with cash and file or publish anything.U know how people steal our credit card information and personal information you will be open to that if u do business with them over the phone.Proceed at your own risk u been warned don’t cry if it happens.

Don't sign up for their digital subscription because it is quite difficult to cancel it. Just call the number on the website you say? Oh, noones in the office to answer phones a recording says. Just do it through online account management maybe? I can log in no problem but there's an error with my account when I try to view the bill or change payment methods... of course. The website does recommend to call the number I tried earlier though, so thats helpful. Good job LA Times, get that money anyway you can.

I am very unsatisfy with LA Times News Paper Local Distributor. We subscribed to received the News paper Sundays and Thursdays. LA Times Distributor didn't delivered the first week. So we called and someone responded somewhere in the Philippines. They said that they would resolve the problem. Today however, my husband went outside to pick his news paper and there is NO news paper to be read. So I called LA Times and they said they CAN'T deliver the paper that they MISSED today. I wish that they kept their word. I will cancel this subscription since LA Times News Local Paper can't deliver what they promise to their consumers. I wont do business with a mideocry delivery paper. I will ONLY do business with a serious dedicated responsible news paper who will DO AS THEY SAY , DELIVER WHAT THEY PROMISE AND AND MOST IMPORTANTLY THAT LEADS BY EXAMPLE. I am very disappointed with LA Times Paper Delivery Services.

Yelp
This is a great paper and we need it. Despite the incredible hostility towards print papers and the hatred from the internet in general, it's a true miracle that this paper exists. The writers are great, Steve Lopez, Sandy Banks, Bill Plaschke, Michael Hiltzick, Harry Littman, Mary McNamara, LZ Granderson, Robin Abcarian, Amy Kaufman, Gustavo Arellano, George Skelton, Mikael Wood, Mark Swed, Mark Barabak, Steve Padilla, and Editor Allison Wisk. So suck it up, sourpuss critics, most of the world loves this paper! The owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, should get an award for keeping real journalism alive. Only comment, the customer service from their 800 number needs improvement and the paper should be printed on 100% hemp paper, the same paper the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were printed on. A lot cheaper on the environment and the LA Times could be a leader in making that change happen. Support democracy, buy a newspaper like the LA Times!

Yelp
Paid for a subscription that have not been able to deliver so far. They keep escalating with no results Won't refund product I paid for but dud nit and have not received

Yelp
I just wanted to be a good Samaritan and help out this kid, who needed to sell subscriptions of the LA Times to get a scholarship. What ended up happening is that: 1) I never received the physical papers for the LA Times per the subscription I purchased 2) Got billed twice within a month of activating my subscription, and got charged for a "premium issue" 3) Attempted to cancel my account via phone call and through email 4) Have continued to receive invoices It has been a nightmare to try and resolve any of these issues. Look, I would guess that I would have absolutely no issues with the actual content that the LA Times is producing if I were to ever receive the actual LA Times, but I can safely say that for me, this has been the single worst subscription experience I've ever had. I'm not mad about the money, it's just baffling that I got charged multiple times for something that I never received and it's taken me 5 months to get my account cancelled.

Yelp
No one problem after another delivery are inconsistent and the Philippines is out of control over 15 years of being a customer doesn't help the situation is getting worse as they let the loyal employees go

Yelp
Their new Sports Section format is horrible and was only done to save money. I plan on canceling my subscription after 50 years. Very sad.

Yelp
I actually like reading the paper but there service so bad. No service so sad newspapers run so bad. Think they would hire some people to handle things \
google avatar

Antonio L.

Yelp
I mean, what rating did you expect for the fake news capitol of the world? Couldn't find a good review anywhere for Fake News Times I would give it negative stars obviously but we have yelp limitations, sadly.
google avatar

Shari T.

Yelp
This paper is something you would expect from a small rural town. It has gone downhill and now the delivery service is horrible. You never know when it will arrive IF it arrives at all. We live in a condo and now they stopped delivering it to our door. We are seniors and we have to walk down to the lobby to get it, but we never know when it will get there. Two my neighbors have cancelled. I haven't wanted too but I think it's time to say bye bye.

Yelp
Have you ever attempted navigating the LA Times website??? Don't try, save yourself a "HUGE" amount of frustration!! Unless you're interested in the latest crossword puzzle, locating an article from the LA Times, published two days prior is impossible on the website. Additionally, 3 or for weeks ago in the "WEEKEND" issue the "TIMES" ran an article on the best bottled water too purchase. Seriously!! We're in an environmental crises and need to cut usage of plastic and they suggest the best water in plastic water bottles!! Whom ever wrote the article should be fired!! Note, LAX has cut interior vendors from selling water in plastic bottles and asked its public to switch to refillable water containers NOT plastic! A year ago over content dissatisfaction and after 45 years reading the LA Times, I trimmed my subscription down from 7 days weekly to weekends. Cutting Saturday delivery is next. I'm sad for the wonderful people who deliver my paper. Less money for them as customers cut readership. I promise I'll show appreciation for their early morning service and consistently with my usual holiday card and check.

Bob A.

Yelp
My experiences with the LA Times is pretty good with the customer service people in The Philippines. In the El Segundo marketing and accounting depts, not good at all. I stopped my hardcopy delivery as a direct result.1 star

Yelp
This papers reporting was excellent and since the move out of DTLA, they seem to have lost the heart beat of of the City and what makes it tick. Yikes! I still am keeping my subscription, but seem disappointed on a daily basis.
google avatar

Rob N.

Yelp
I didn't receive my paper on 2/13/22. I called and the auto reply service confirmed they would get it to me. I never received it. I tried calling but no one answers. What terrible service.

Steven L.

Yelp
Please note this stellar review of the Los Angeles Times Newspaper is for their digital distribution... or more succinctly their lack of a consistent digital distribution their newspaper. After several fruitless phone calls to their (lack of) Help Desk, I've come to the conclusion that should I have the good fortune of receiving an email notification that the digital version of the newspaper, it would be a miracle. Most days I don't receive an email notification, but today they've exceeded my lowly expectations! They sent me 4 notifications for todays paper! I'm not sure if this is a method of making amends for the absolutely lousy service. Congratulations to the LA Times IT staff for actually doing something!

Yelp
Negative Stars -- the absolute stupidest, lying, incompetent idiotic of a customer service department, could not make this up. Started free one week free trial, then when canceled began a series of idiots one after another, can't believe 7 out of eight different idiots, misinterpreting, misrepresenting, then after apparent resolution, outrageously overcharging, requiring more idiot emails. Asked for manager contact at least 6 separate emails, never provided, complete utter idiocy !!
google avatar

Callie S.

Yelp
The LA times was charging us $104 every 8 weeks for our subscription. I complained and was offered $84, then $75, then $63. I canceled it. Beware.
google avatar

Michael H.

Yelp
Did you try out the free trial month? Did you you go online and try to cancel? Did you click on "cancel subscription " on the website, and then still get charged for the next month? Me too! Did you contact "support" multiple times via the website and receive no response? Me too! Did you finally realize they were running a scam and call the number, only to have a lady with an almost inscrutable accent tell you that they didn't want to lose your subscription, so she was just gonna go ahead and continue your subscription at at a discounted rate in spite of your clear request for cancellation? Me too! Did you finally, theoretically, convince them that you actually meant what you said at the beginning of the call, and did they give you a future date when they would stop trying to steal your money? Me too! Stay tuned...

Kathryn S.

Yelp
The LA Times changed my rate without informing me, and when I tried to cancel the subscription, I still had to pay for a month extra. I phoned and no one could do anything. Be very careful if you subscribe!
google avatar

Randy G.

Yelp
The Subscription Phone number is a joke. I tried changing my subscription plan and was on hold for 20 minutes before someone answered. After telling her what I wanted to do, she transferred my call, and I was left on hold for another 25 minutes, finally hanging up. Sent a letter instead to their Customer Service Department in El Segundo explaining my change request and asking to be contacted to confirm. I highly doubt anyone will follow through with this request if it's any indication how unresponsive they are with their so called " Subscription Phone Number" line. Very disappointed at this lack of any kind of Customer Service via their so called Phone line while their paper continues to become smaller.

Yelp
I have been reading the Los Angeles Times for over 45 years but no more. When I received my credit card payment for a continuation of my on-line subscription, I phoned them and asked them to reverse the charge and cancel my subscription. The rep said he could not do that because I'd agreed (in the 5,000 word legal document) to keep renewing until I canceled. Now, I have other companies I deal with who have similar policies, but they ALWAYS email me a couple of weeks before my subscription renews verifying I intend to renew. Los Angeles Times: this is not how we do business in California.

Lynelle G.

Yelp
I have had a subscription with the Los Angeles Times for 30 years, and sadly, I just cancelled it. And, it wasn't due to the newspaper stories itself; it was because of their VERY, VERY POOR customer service. And judging by the comments posted here, it appears there are others who agree. I won't go into the frustrating details, but I will be sending a letter to the Los Angeles Times explaining everything that happened. I'm not sure if they will even address my issues, but I felt that they need to know that their reputation has been badly tarnished because of their decision to outsource their customer service to another country (P.S. They do not even deserve the one star, but you can't post a review without choosing ).

Yelp
i need local rep to contact me..i have to call philippines to get my delivery fixed..i tried 3 weeks in row and never get promised call back..if anyone from la times see this i need an american local rep to contact me!!! Disabled vet and yet LA times never responds!!! What is worse they out source to Philippines instead of local jobs...

sandra d.

Yelp
Took 3 months to set up delivery missing sections non responsive to complaints Cannot be compared to the Washington Post which we had for 40 years with hardly a problem in content or service
google avatar

Joe N.

Yelp
I was offered a trial for the sunday LA Times. The sales rep assured me this would not be automatically be billed. I should have known he was lying. It's a sad day when you can't even trust the newspaper to be honest.

Yelp
I find it horrific that I am unable to read LA Times articles online since I have now reached my limit!?!? And now in order to be able to access them, I need to become a subscriber?!? Especially during this unprecedented time of instability, confusion, fear and anxiety in the world and especially in Los Angeles - that anyone should be restricted from important, trending and continually evolving information feels extremely exploitative and cunning! I'm so deeply frustrated with this Idiocracy.

Craig R.

Yelp
the most and i repeat most absolute incompetent, defiant and lack of promised response from the outsource dimwitts from the orient that one has to repeat themselves like a broken record trying to obtain the service we pay for and continually never receive. the worst part is that there is not any u.s. contact availability for corporate as c.s. promises they will have someone from corporate contact us. yeah, right! after countless years, the can take our subscription and put it where the sun doesn't shine. this company is due to soon fold due to the lack of service.

Yelp
LA Times Customer Service is the worst excuse for that function I've seen anywhere , in a long time . It's like there are no humans there anymore . Today i received a Notice saying my account - which I closed for poor service issues back in November 2016 - threatening to report me to the Credit Agencies for $14 that I don't even owe them & they have never billed me for. I am unaware of any previous balance with them, so I went Online to see what could have caused this to pop up 4 months later. I am unable to Log In online because their site says there are Cookies preventing me from getting in -- but giving no further directions . So ,I tried calling their Customer Service Center at 213-283-2274 , finally got past all the stupid prompts and mis-directions . But next, I was left on endless hold until their equipment - probably in the Phillipines ----disconnected me!!! I do not owe them $ 14.69 and they have NEVER sent me a Bill for anything since my subscription was terminated in November 2016. Their Collection agent claims I ignored "previous efforts" to resolve this issue. BUT NO PREVIOUS calls or letters were sent to me stating I owed anything. This is a big lie, and this kind of stupid accounting procedures was the reason I terminated my subscription 4 months ago, after being a subscriber for over two decades. They can never get it right , they will not credit you if you go away on vacation and stop your subscription, and they are always sending confusing billings that stretch over months ahead. Whoever is in charge of this Dept ought to be fired . LA Times Subscription Dept caused this problem to begin with, and now they have the nerve to send me to Collection for $14.69 ?????? How dare you ? No wonder your newspaper is losing its longtime subscribers . BUYER BEWARE ! These people are incompetent. Makes me wonder about the rest of that newspaper , if this is how their Customer Service & Billing departments function ( or I should say do not function.)

Yelp
LA Times is STILL charging people to read important information regarding COVID 19 updates online. Thanks for being so great in our time of need. I would NOT subscribe to this paper if it were free. Way to show your support to your community.

Kurtis D.

Yelp
Did the promo at Angel Stadium September 23 was told I would receive a paper on that Sunday I still have not received a paper I got a phone call asking how I am enjoying my service I explain to them that I still haven't received the paper I will fix your problem sir two more weeks go by still no paper called right now after receiving A automatic renewal letter I called talk to a lady that proceeded to tell me that there's nothing that she can do that she can cancel my subscription and ask for a refund but she'd have to submit it for review don't ever do this promo or get this newspaper absolute joke

G E.

Yelp
I encountered an offer by the L.A. Times online and decided to avail myself of a trial subscription. I am a literate woman--I graduated with straight A's through Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees--but the online offers by the L.A. Times seem neither honest nor clear. I signed up for what appeared to be a limited 4-week subscription for which I would pay $4.00 per week (thus, $16 per month) for a digital copy of the Times. I had fulfilled my part of the bargain; then it was time for the L.A. Times to fulfill theirs. They sent me copies of the newspaper, yes, and (as with all bills), I trusted that they would deduct what I owed, when I owed it ($16 per month); then, if required, I'd receive a renewal notice. I DID NOT. I assumed then, that the Times continued the newspapers beyond the trial period to encourage subscription. I pay my bills when I receive them, but wasn't billed further (and, had I been, I'd have cancelled, since I signed up for a particular weekly rate). Yet, this month, the Times appropriated $96.00 from my bank account--all at once--never having bothered to deduct the payments in an affordable manner: per week. A DUPLICITOUS BUSINESS MODEL! Desired Settlement: Full Refund
google avatar

Yelp
After months of complaining about our paper not being delivered on time, and broken promises about fixing the problem, we switched to Sunday only and e-paper the rest of the week. When there was no paper this morning, I called to complain, and was promised by a supervisor that they would deliver within 45 minutes. It never arrived. When I went online I was told it would be delivered Tuesday. I have no idea what good the Sunday paper on Tuesday will do. Customer service for this paper is beyond bad.

frunzik g.

Yelp
Complete lies in everything they say they charge people to hear news about covid and on top of that they only report in ways that are in their views la times is the new cnn or should I say Fnn the fake news network

Yelp
I've had L.A times delivered to my house for a year now and you guy's bill me every month! Sometimes I catch it like this month all most paying you guy's twice! Get it together in your office! This is ripping people off who don't catch it!!!
google avatar

Steve B.

Yelp
We ran one third page Ad in Real Estate section. Weekend. Not one response. Feel there are better ways to advertise then this print media paper
google avatar

Christine L.

Yelp
Recently got called by the billing department about a subscription I canceled over 4 years ago. The guy was so rude I'm going to cancel the subscription I have to my current home. I had the same issue before when I changed CC and forgot to update, they call and behave like a bunch of thugs. Don't they know print media is dying? Maybe they should try harder to maintain the clientele they currently have.
google avatar

Nanette S.

Yelp
I paid for a 1 year subscription in full. They decide to send me some Premium Issues I never asked for, charged me for them, shortened my subscription and tell me I owe them $2.50. Well I have been going back and forth with these people and have gotten nowhere. They tell me it was communicated through my billing, well I only get a bill once a year. You wonder how many other people they have screwed over. It's about the principal. You sent me something I didn't want, you charge me for it and shorten my subscription. It's not Rocket Science L.A, Times

Dale B.

Yelp
The LA Times can't get it right. They deliver while I have a vacation hold, then skip deliveries when I'm home. I've called at 8:00a.m. to be nform them of a miss d delivery. They claim they will deliver in 2 hours. I call back when that fails to happen and they tell me it's too late to re-deliver. The fact is, it wasn't too late at 8:00 when I called. RHE WORST CUDTOMER SERVICE!!!!

Mike S.

Yelp
Where is my paper? For the second time in two weeks, I have not received my L.A. Times newspaper (last week it was Saturday and this week is it the Sunday edition!). Their call-in system only promises to contact the person that did not deliver the newspaper in the first place, with no call back delivery confirmation or emailed confirmation of the delivery problem. Print newspaper is probably a losing business for the L.A. Times. I suggest that they refund all of the subscription monies, stop their print business, and go to online only, if this is the quality of their newspaper delivery system, which is very poor.

Doug D.

Yelp
I will go into some detail, but it exists elsewhere and many others have been mislead as well I have learned. I signed up for a 90-day digital trial for $1, and was told in the same offer that I could cancel anytime, including on-line, but when my life got busy and I couldn't use the service and tried to cancel to avoid additional charges, there was no online option, despite repeated attempts on different days and coming my account and their site. And when I tried to cancel via email they tried to upsell me to stay longer and would not cancel my account and told me to call customer service, and when I called customer service to cancel, they were not open due to COVID, on two separate days when they claimed their customer service was open. After being trapped with the LA TIMES for days, and being forced to pass my 90-day subscription cutoff, they then said I owed $22.81 cents -- classic scam. I still have no idea what that money is for. When I tried to inquire, customer service was closed again, for days -- COVID they said. They said I could pay online, but wouldn't accept my account number, and I got the same result over their 1980-style digital phone pay service -- amazing. I checked the account number twice, and re-entered it, but to no avail. So, somewhat ironically, and appropriately for the out of touch LA TIMES' failed digital "experiment" with this new thing some call "the internet" by what is still a good print media shop and information source, I had to use the medium they know best -- good old 19th century technology -- the U.S. Mail -- and thank goodness for the U.S. Mail, or I'd still be trapped and likely racking up more fees somehow for a service I didn't want or use and could not stop. Luckly I stopped my credit card before they charged me more .... I was fooled by a misleading add, a name I trusted and quality news, and my desire for good reporting and news that lead to a classic bait and switch worthy of so many online scams. I should have done my research and seen the scores of bad reviews for their digital trial, and that their digital media effort has been an epic failure (https://www.niemanlab.org/2019/07/the-l-a-times-disappointing-digital-numbers-show-the-games-not-just-about-drawing-in-subscribers-its-about-keeping-them/). I hated to pay the money (by check) for something I didn't use, but feel so good being finally free of them (so I think!) and stopping the waste of time, and potential further bills, and hard-earned money. I should file a BB complaint, but I've already wasted too much time on them, so I will post here and there and warn others to not repeat my mistake. Please be very wary and do not use the LA Times "trial" digital service, and do not give them your credit card, or if you do, make sure you mean it, as it is near to impossible to cancel once you have started and account with them.

Harriet L.

Yelp
I wish I had read yelp about the LA Times before accepting their 3 month 'free subscription' offer. They now have my credit card info and still no access to their site and they are wasting our time by their dysfunctional 'customer assistance'. I want them to immediately issue me a cancellation notice and never want to see a bill from them at all. I do not need their nonsense. No Thanks.

Jessie A.

Yelp
Worst Service ever! Paid subscription and then cancelled subscription because paper was not received as promised. I only paid because I didn't want any negatives on my credit. A couple months pass by and they are still sending me the paper, I call back and ask them to stop SENDING ME THE NEWSPAPER. All off a sudden I get a bill from A.R.M debt collector saying I owe $31.60. I call the office and they just say the never received a call from me to cancel. LA times is by far the worst company ever. Never again will I do business with them.

Jeff T.

Yelp
I had a subscription to home delivery for several years, which I cancelled. Why? Because I scheduled a vacation hold (meaning stop delivery while I'm away and resume when I return) which they did not respect. The problem with getting the paper delivered while your gone is that the paper piles up on your front lawn. This is like a WELCOME sign to burglars, telling them you're not home... very dangerous. This last time was the 4th time it happened, even though on the previous times I complained to the Director of customer service, and the Vice President of the Times. So, I figured the only way I could get them to stop was to cancel. Their customer service talks the talk, but fails to walk the walk.
