10 Best Bars and Restaurants for a Taco Tuesday in San Antonio | Eater

"Ask any true Texan about their favorite kind of taco and puffy tacos are sure to be mentioned in the same breath. Somewhat of a San Antonian oddity, puffy tacos start with a flattened ball of masa that’s then deep-fried until crispy and loaded with ground beef, lettuce, tomatoes, and cheese. Few places have mastered the art of the puffy taco quite like Los Barrios — they were even served at the White House back in 2010! Wash it all down with an El Jefe top-shelf margarita, made frozen or on the rocks with Cazadores tequila." - Vox Creative

1st and last time here. Was not for me. The rice was dry. The menudo tasted below average. The waiter couldn't even stay on top of refills for our party. Only great thing was the Brochettes Tropicales but not the rice it came with.

Google
Inner West Side Tex-Mex restaurant with a good Mexican vibe and atmosphere. Ths hanging planters throughout the restaurant are a nice touch. The food is great, but small portions and overpriced when compared to other similar restaurants. The prices align more with Southtown, the Rim, or Downtown. I mean, $9 kids' meals and $28 fajitas for 1 plate are on the higher end, especially when the fajita plate was mostly onions and peppers. We ordered waters to drink and they tasted like an old hose or water pipe. Even the sodas had the flavor. The chips and salsa before the meal were really good, though the salsa was very mild. The Poblano enchiladas and puffy tacos were excellent. The rice and refried beans were average and went well with the main course. The tortillas also had a good flavor and texture. The service was lacking. We constantly had to flag down the server to refill empty cups, get napkins, and to take away dirty plates. The server seemed nice, but he barely spoke.

Took my sister in law for a late lunch early dinner on her birthday. I ordered the chicken verde enchilada lunch special, and I was not disappointed. They were not greedy with the chicken, and the Verde sauce was just the right amount. (Sorry, I forgot to take a picture) My husband had the chicken fajita plate, and it was season just right. Of course, we had to try their 4th of July's trio drinks and the prickly pear Margaritas. (Photo displayed. Don't judge, Lol!) They were so good we ordered a 2nd round. Of course we were celebrating a birthday! The place was clean and very welcoming. There's plenty of parking and prices were reasonable, I'd say for a party of four I spent about $100 so it was not bad. Although there was an issue when my charge posted to my bank account of an extra $20 for a tip a few days later, which I had given the waitress in cash, the manager Kevin was quick to correct this. I was told my receipt was mixed up while processing receipts. I was happy with the customer service and the prompt correction. I plan on going to this restaurant again. Enjoy!

Los Barrios is sadly nit what it used to be to be before the pandemic. The atmosphere was not good. The food was not good, cold and dry meat. Service was poor. Took my daughter for her birthday yesterday and ordered the , EL MOFOFO GRILL "#21" two of them very hefty price but the last time my husband and I ordered it for our anniversary before the pandemic. This time it was not as delicious and the avocado I remember was not the same flavor, not good , the meat was cold on one of the orders couldn’t keto the fire on to keep it hot because of a air conditioner vent above us. The waitress took the orders quickly But I felt insulted as she referred to me as the big lady , perhaps it means something in Spanish culture, I don’t know , but it felt like an insult . Then the waitress brought out three champagne glasses only to spill one all over my head and clothes and into my eyes causing intense burning in my eyes and I couldn’t see until I was handed a paper towel to wipe my eyes and the biting continued a while longer afterwards, this also caused me to choke on what I was eating and it took a while to go away. After everything the waitress brought out SOPAPILLAS with a candle for my daughter , we never asked for SOPAPILLAS so I am thinking this is nice until the bill came , she took off the charge for the champagne she spilled all over me , yet charged us for the SOPAPILLAS, something we never ordered . Very disappointing experience and food and service for my daughter 30th birthday. I highly don’t recommend this place and will never ever be back. Too sad because it use to be a great place with beautiful atmosphere and great tasting food and wonderful service before the pandemic and back in the day as a teenager. And my eyes are still irritated today One day after the incident Going to see my eye doctor today I’m glad she was open

Google
Que Rico! This place is bomb. Delicious TexMex classics doing it old school with the orange colored corn tortillas for the enchiladas con chili gravy. Truly simple and spectacular joy to eat. Homemade and warm! chips with fresh salsa are addicting. Great bite of food every time. A little pricier than nearby options, but worth your weekend splurge. You deserve it!

Google
As you can see by the pics, we couldn't wait to start eating! They have the best cheese enchiladas in town!! Go on Tuesdays and get the 2 cheese enchiladas for only $7.99! Awesome! Ask for the chimchurri sauce, great with the chips. Nice to see Diana, the owner, personally greeting the customers!

Yelp
We walked in and had a party of 15 people and yet got seated right away. Then got our drink order quickly after, service was already to a great start. Before we got our food a young gentleman came by and took our picture then towards the end he came by with two complimentary photos of our entire group! They also offered photos that were framed which I ended up buying because when do I ever get a photo taken and framed. Anyways, the food came out and it was delicious. Everything was cooked perfectly and serving size was great. Down side to this restaurant only has to be the parking. It's a bit difficult but that's it!

Yelp
A family favorite of my husband's since he was young. It's always a pleasure to stop in and eat at this family-owned and operated institution - this is delicious home cooking comfort food. My go-tos are the enchiladas verdes or the Nachos à la Butler. The Queso Flameado is always a good choice and it comes with fresh, warm flour or corn tortillas. This is also the disputed birth place of the puffy taco, so treat yourself to this OG dish! The house salsa is one of my favorites and comes chips (the orange are the best!). The service is always super fast and you'll definitely catch glimpses of the family who owns LB working the floor or serving tables. They take so much pride in this beloved place and you can feel it. You'll walk through their mini Mercado on the way in and out of the restaurant, so poke around the local wares and maybe pick up a thing or two - or the Los Barrios Cookbook! Lot parking and street parking avail.

Yelp
Came back to San Antonio after many years and found that our favorite restaurant has changed hands. We got a recommendation for Los Barrios from family in town and boy are we glad. Everyone raved about their food. I had cheese enchiladas that were made they way they should be with red Tortillas. Yellow cheese and amazing chilli gravy. They were served with amazing puffy tacos that were light with a tasty beef filling. The owner Diane came by the table and heard we had gone back and forth between which old San Antonio Tex mex favorite hooked us up with the best Carne Guisada. You have to come here for the food and for the amazing story of how this family resturant got started. I will be back even if it is a 4 hour car Trip

Yelp
Took the wife to SA for her birthday Zoo first then Los Barrios! Food was excellent Service top notch Our waiter was fabulous Love the ambiance of the restaurant

Yelp
The food was excellent- as I have always remembered it to be. We enjoyed the TexMex cheese enchiladas and ala carte puffy tacos. Enchiladas were very flavorful in the chilli con carne sauce. I had their fresh tortillas which are very well made and quite tasty. The rice is very good. I only wish i had a choice of beans, i.e., charro vs refried. The puffy tacos were very good. We had one beef and one avocado. Excellent choices. Service was very good - attentive waiter. Ambiance while always nice and very Mexican like, it was our misfortune tonight to be seated next to a party of seven. They were very loud. I often wonder if people can hear themselves or simply like to make a spectacle of themselves. Highly recommended. The food that is!

Yelp
Food was good. Plenty of seating and looks very clean. Very friendly staff. Also seems like a good place for kids. My young daughter loved the bean taco plate.

Yelp
I was really disappointed with my meal. I had the cortadillo and it's always a must have when I come to San Antonio. But today the meat tasted spoiled--had a sour smell and off-putting flavor. It completely ruined the dish, and I couldn't finish it. I told the waitress and she informed me the manager would check it out. I expected better quality and service. The manager should of at least showed his face and apologized since I wasn't making a big stink about it and still paíd for the meal. Very disappointed and won't be returning.

Yelp
The food and service at los Barrios was excellent, we stopped in for a late lunch, we seated immediately, and the food came out hot and fresh. The staff and hostess were very friendly and attentive. Definitely a place to stop in and if you've never tried a puffy taco, you should have your first one here my personal favorite was the beef puffy taco, it was fire!

Yelp
Come here for an excellent margarita. I tried the guava flavored margarita and loved it. My experience is based on a 40 person party I had for a graduation. They handled our group with haste and precision which made both myself and my family feel as though we made the right choice by planning the event to be here. The smaller menu (provided for large parties) was stocked with all of the crowd favorites so no one felt limited in ordering and I was happy to see how many clean plates I saw. It seemed the entire group enjoyed it. If you are not coming for a large party, you likely will not face too long of a wait (if any wait at all) because of the ample seating. I love the decorations inside which really leans into Hispanic heritage and makes the food more of an experience than just a plain whatever kind of meal. I will definitely be coming back to this excellent restaurant:)

Yelp
Tuesday. March 21, 2023. Dinner. Visited here with seven other family members. This spot was recommended by two San Antonio locals as the best Tex-Mex in the city. Note, they are closed on a Mondays. I asked our friendly waitress, Claudia, what I should order? She told me they were known for their puffed taco. Unlike most other Tex-Mex restaurants, this one charges $1.99 for chips and salsa. I ordered a beef puffed taco ($4.99), and the Tuesday Special Enchiladas for $5.99. The Tuesday Special consisted of two rolled enchiladas, one cheese and one beef, smothered with cheddar cheese and red Ranchero sauce, refried beans, salad and Mexican rice. They did offer free corn and flour tortillas that were hot since they came in tortilla warmers. The beans tasted like they came from a can, the rice had a nice flavor, salad tasted fresh, and the enchiladas were just okay. Ranchero sauce doesn't have much heat. Taco tasted good with the fried puffed dough reminding me of a sopapilla. They are generous with the food portions. The President/CEO of Los Barrios, Louis Barrios, checked on our table while we were dining. I could tell he truly cared about our experience as he asked how we liked the food and told several jokes. He said that the restaurant used to be a Dairy Queen a long time ago. It impressed me that he talked to us about five minutes. Based on what my local friends told me about the food here, I can only assume the food quality has gone down recently. Prices aren't too bad here, but I'd rate them as average Tex-Mex at best.

Yelp
My first time visiting Los Barrios was for lunch with a friend while visiting San Antonio. I've heard rave reviews about this restaurant and wanted to try it myself. The staff was very friendly and the food was outstanding. I had a great experience and plan to eat here again the next time I'm in San Antonio. Keep up the great work!!!
google avatar

Heidi A.

Yelp
The ambiance is delightful. The price wasn't too bad either. The tortillas that they brought out were soooo good like pancakes. Very well made. I ordered the lunch combo plate with tamale and a puffy taco. They were underwhelming. Not enough flavor in my opinion. The chips and salsa were good. The service was good but the host took us to a really small table at first, when there were 5 people.
google avatar

April R.

Yelp
Food was less than mediocre at best, no flavor no seasoning no anything. The service too there time and forgot my friends drink order completely and then blamed it on us that were weren't "ready" to order so she didn't put it in. When I did put in my order it wasn't complete, so very disappointing. They are charging you enough enough to eat there. When I first arrived the venue was half full, I asked for a booth and she said,"I'll see what I can do". Making me feel like I needed to make a reservation or something all the while your dining area has plenty of seating! They stopped bringing you chips and salsa (at a cost now) no chimchurri on the table either. The queso was like watered down milk and the red salsa had no flavor. I would say don't waste your money here. They even have a man walking around with a camera offering pics like this is "The place to BE"! Which it certainly isn't. I ate two bites of my food and left very unhappy. Ambiance was sad. Ty

Yelp
I've spent 40 years as a professional examiner of Tex-Mex food. (Mostly in San Antonio). Now with the study complete and with the help of the New Mexican Food Algorithm, I can say unequivocally...Los Barrois is the best Tex-Mex in San Antonio!!! This is an emotionless decision based on pure scientific metrics! In the process of these studies, I've eaten so much Tex-Amex that I've actually become a full (not honorary) Mexican!! Study results show; (On the 10 Scale) Rice - 9.2 Refried beans - 9.4 Enchiladas - 9.8 Tamales - 9.0 Queso - 8.1 Pico de Gallo - 6.7 (needs to be newly made EVERY day) Guacamole - 8.8 Chips - 9.1 Hot Sauce - 8.5 (needs a tiny bit more heat) The Cortadillos (sautéed steak tips) - 9.9 People, take it from a Mexican...this place IS the bomba!!!

Esteban P.

Yelp
It is a beautiful experience eat there, family owned, you are going to feel in a warm place. I went with a friend, I ate the Milanese plate with empanada and chimichuri, the chimichurri is fresh and homemade style, I am from Argentina and I know when it is a good one. Our waitress was Elena, she always was checking on us. And we paid cash, we didn't notice when we paid, we gave extra money, and she came back told to us, we gave extra for our bill. Very honest woman. The place is warm, many families eating at the same time, and you feel part of the atmosphere, it's a San Antonio experience to live. Every time I am in San Antonio, I have to stop there.

Yelp
The menudo my daughter and husband order was gross. Neither of them could chew it. When they asked to return it and take it off the bill the manager came back to the table with both bowls of puke saying he and his cooks tasted it and there was nothing wrong with it. He silk shirt was unbuttoned showing his hairy chest of which I'm sure some of the curly chest hair fell into some unexpecting customer's food. Absolutely gross food and the manager was appalling. Nothing like the good ole days at Los Barrios.

Yelp
My wife and I decided to stop at the original Los Barrios location since it had been a few years at this location. Perhaps it is the environment, but the food at the original location always seems to be just a hair better than there other locations. The food was outstanding and the wait staff is always right on top of things. Louie, his sister and the rest of the Los Barrios family are such tremendous contributors to life in San Antonio. They are a family built on service to others..

Yelp
I have been to this restaurant many times and it used to be one of my favorites. But in recent years they've been slacking on several of their dishes. For instance I tried their carbe guisada and it tasted and looked like beef stew. I was so disappointed I couldn't even eat it all. Also in my opinion the restaurant needs a little renovation.

Raina L.

Yelp
After a couple of visits, this is now one of our favorite places! Amazing food. I'm shocked that this place isn't mentioned more as a "must" for people to stop when in town. Food is amazing. Service is great even when they're busy, and the restraunt is beautiful. On Easter weekend, they had live music, and it was a great addition. It wasn't overly loud, and he was very talented. (He sang one of my very favorite Christian songs.) Also, on our last visit I learned that the owners had released a cookbook with their family recipes. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Mari A.

Yelp
Service is fast, but they could improve in their friendliness and make you feel at home. They serve traditional Tex-Mex food. Didn't order chips and salsa because I read that it's not complimentary. The food was served promptly. It's well seasoned. The enchiladas were too sweet for my Mexican palate... I wouldn't order it again. The nachos were pricey for 12 counted chips. They were tasty, but I wouldn't order it again. Overall, I wouldn't return because their prices are a bit too high for average Tex-Mex food. I am not impressed with this restaurant. The ambiance was cozy, though, and quaint. If I ever decide to come back, I'd order something different from their menu. Come check them out for yourself!!

Yelp
There's a lot to like about Los Barrios. We've been twice recently and the food and atmosphere are great. Being native San Antonians we've dined at both small and large Mexican restaurants for 70 years now, both fancy and basic. We've read Los Barrios reviews complaining about charging for chips. There's a sign on the table that chips are complimentary, you just have to request them. Today we ordered a Tuesday lunch special, 2 cheese enchiladas, rice, beans, salad and tortillas. EXCELLENT, the sauce was tasteful, robust and meaty. Flavorful and generous yellow cheese, excellent flour tortillas. Our other plate was a Tuesday lunch plate taquitos, one chicken and one Al Pastor. Very generous servings, accompanied by Charro Beans, guacamole, salad, sweet white onions, and cilantro, on two taquito size fresh corn tortillas. The Al Pastor and chicken were SO tasty, we can't wait to do it again. REMEMBER: it's essential to support your local family owned restaurants, and, if you can, pay cash. They'll do everything they can to be there for your NEXT visit.

Magdalena C.

Yelp
We had a late lunch today, our server was Alessia which means "to help." Our first visit, we were greeted @ the desk with a friendly smile, seated immediately. Our server introduced herself, immediately served us fresh tortilla chips & their delicious salsa. We ordered the Enchiladas de Mole & Plato de los Barrios. Together with the beans, rice & flour tortillas, I was not able to finish my plate. Large portions, reasonably priced. Ambiance was family oriented. Work staff displayed excellent rapport with each other. Looking forward in visiting again in the near future. Found our new Mexican cuisine "go to" restaurant. Continued Success. :-)

Pep M.

Yelp
Love the food. Folks are always nice. However, we ordered combo plates with crispy tacos and were asked if we wanted to order cheese with our tacos. Yes...they are upselling cheese on crispy tacos. Never, ever heard of that.

Phil W.

Yelp
Best in Town! Perfect beef enchiladas, boracho beans, chips and salsa! Everything including tortillas are the bomb! Large menu, looking forward to many more visits. Have been by every week for 3 weeks, excellent service from multiple waiters!
google avatar

Yelp
The food was ok. Wasn't Omgosh yum. Just Mexican food. Little grimy in areas. Biggest turn off? No chips unless you pay. I'd rather you increase prices a tad as some eat them. Some eat none some eat a lot, and just give them free. It's super annoying to be arguing about "don't eat all the chips" at a Mexican food joint in Texas. Every single restaurant I have ever eaten at in 58 years gives complimentary chips. I'd have come back because the kids liked the puffy tacos but that so how annoying paying 2$ for chips is (tiny portion). I kind of feel karenish about this. Sorry!

Angie P.

Yelp
Sub par, expensive, they want to charge money for every little add on available. Most Mexican restaurants give you complimentary chips and salsa; not here. They provide the salsa but charge $2 per bowl of chips and mind you, the bowl provided was the size of a cereal bowl. Pics provided. I ordered puffy tacos, normally cheese comes on a taco. But not there you have to pay extra for it. We also ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was cold and flavorless. I wish we didn't come here, was not a very good experience. Except the waitress. She was fantastic.

Yelp
You can pretty much throw a rock and hit a great tex-mex restaurant in SA but Los Barrios is an institution! The Barrios family knows what they're doing and you can read about their success in the large lobby while you wait for a table - there's pretty much always a wait, but it goes fast. Once you're seated, you'll get menus and a basket of chips and salsa. Add on an order of queso or bean and cheese nachos if you're with a group. I highly recommend the cheese enchiladas or any of the combos for your entree - the tortillas are perfectly soft, the chile con carne is seasoned just right, and the #13 with three enchiladas (add rice and beans to round it out if you want) will keep you full most of the day. My BF chose the carne guisada plate and while it was okay, I would go elsewhere for the best version of this dish. Staff are practically running around the dining room, they're so fast. I believe we had Francisco, who was friendly and efficient. Live music (mariachis) certain days/times adds to the ambiance, but maybe check ahead of time if you're planning to catch up or have a working lunch - it might be difficult to hear.

Matthew H.

Yelp
Love this place for some true Mexican food. Been coming here for years and always satisfied. The past two times I have gotten the shrimp fajitas which are great. Really good salsa as well. They have a pretty vibe here with lots of colors and friendly staff, making it an enjoyable experience.

Laurine G.

Yelp
Our family used to make a trip from out of town to Los barrios until we discovered the chips fee... without refills. Not too smart with that business decision los barrios. That's like going to a Chinese restaurant and having to pay a rice fee! No mas! If the meals are ordered chips should be complimentary AS AT ALL OTHER SAN ANTONIO AREA MEXICAN RESTAURANTS. Thanks for giving us a reason to stay out of the hood and keeping local!

Celeste C.

Yelp
Enchiladas verdes do NOT come with any cheese. The green sauce is way too tart. The taste of the enchiladas verdes is dry, sour and not appetizing. And it's very pricey for a Mexican restaurant.
google avatar

Michelle V.

Yelp
So disappointed. Growing up I remembered going to Los Barrios with my grandmother. So many great memories. The food was average. Not nearly as good as I remember. What floored me was the extra costs for everything. A shock when I requested homemade corn tortillas. Can you imagine the shock when he said 49 cents for one homemade corn tortilla. That's crazy!!!! The flour tortillas were stale and chewy. $80 for three. This made our decision to never return so much easier.

Yelp
Catering Review We LOVE dining at Los Barrios. All of the locations. Their food is our favorite. So, we chose to have them cater for our wedding day. From the beginning, communication was sparse. I was in contacts with a Leo and every email response was extremely short. Serving times were not communicated and caused issues on our wedding day. Service was not professional or friendly. They overbooked the day and underserved on customer service. I would NOT recommend for catering.

Yelp
Worst. Meal. Ever. Listen, I get what I deserve, when ordering a "Poblano chicken burger" at a Mexican restaurant. But this was BAD. Rubbery, Dry. Tasteless. And they dumped a bunch of ketchup packets on top of my cold fries. The two house margaritas were obviously a "mix." I am DONE with this place. Two months ago, somebody ripped off my hubcaps. Seriously? This is SAN ANTONIO. I expect SO much more than garbage food, from such a classic restaurant. My dinner partner had the flauta "plate." Basically, a PLATTER full of rice and beans, and two small flautas. When Taco Cabana is better than Los Barrios, you know you have problems. I spent almost $60 on this garbage. Groceries for a WEEK.

Yelp
Great Chalupa Duo meal on the Lunch Menu. Nicely washed down with a couple house frozen margaritas. Delicious!

Yelp
We dropped by last night Large group of 12 people ~ Our expectations were set that there would be a wait. Took advantage of the wait and visited the bar and ordered a house margarita. It definitely did not disappoint and hit the spot!!! We were seated outside after a short wait. Our waitress was delightful ~ She let us know that this was her 3rd day , which was good to know. She took our orders and was very attentive. Our food arrived after a short wait.... Everything was delicious Overall great experience ~ We will definitely be back soon. Overall great experience!!!

Yelp
Awesomeness put and simple, just like it was 23 years ago when me and the wife went for the first time......

Yelp
Came out to have some fun and food and definitely wasn't disappointed. Had some nachos and a cheese taco. Both were great and the margaritas we had were perfect to wash the food down. Definitely recommend Los Barrios!

Dondrea S.

Yelp
Two stars for the margarita. Tried it, no need to return. They charge for chips and salsa...EACH BOWL! These are old store bought bagged chips! So stale. What's funny is that they offer them before you get a second to review the menu. Waitress HAD to be new. She couldn't answer any questions, she had "to ask" before providing answer. After the second simple question we roughed it out. Haha! Chile Relleno was covered with a red tomato sauce. I requested chicken ( I love Relleno but I'm not eating beef). Sauce was normal. Chicken was DRY my hunny ordered the Tuesday special, and chose the chicken tacos. The chicken was dry. Beans and rice came with both entrees. I will be checking my blood pressure when I get home. There was so much salt. The salsa was salty. I didn't taste the rice, not my thing. My hunny said it was not good. They gave flour tortillas with the meal that felt like they were from yesterday. Someone is definitely cutting corners, nothing we had was homemade or fresh. When you walk in there is a mini flea market and a guy trying to play his guitar and sing in full regalia. I get it create an ambiance. There is plenty of space and seating, you can tell at some point this place was great and they had to expand. But at this point they need to downsize. Create a small community center with 3/4 of it.

Hoa L.

Yelp
We did a weekday reservations. What we liked - great portions, easy parking, good chips and ample salsa, great Monday night pricing and deals What we did not like - quoted $8 margarita was actually $9 - puffy taco tasted like plastic and was chewy not crispy - quality of food was not the best. Ground beef color and taste was bland and not a browned color. Fajitas didn't look very grilled but instead more sautéed - service ended as soon as we paid the bill - beans were super bland - rice was gooey and wilted Unlikely that I would return. There's many other great options in town.

Yelp
Wonder food, atmosphere and drinks. I am from an area without good Mexican food and found this place on Yelp as a cousin was hungry for a "puffy taco". This place is so so much more. Clearly, where the locals eat. Lots of Parking and great staff.

Yelp
Our experience at Los Barrios was wonderful today. We really enjoyed our lunch! The house margaritas are $5 on Wednesday and they are really good! Hard to beat that deal! The chips we ordered were hot and fresh and the salsas that accompanied them were soo addicting! The green salsa was my favorite. It was just the right amount of spicy. For lunch, I had the Sopa y Ensalada, which was of course, tortilla soup and Ensalada Blanco a salad with grilled chicken, bacon, cilantro, and ranch! The salad was BANGING. Chicken - amazing, Bacon - amazing, Cilantro - amazing, ranch - C'MON, AMAZING! The soup was scrumptious. It had avocado, chicken, cheese, tortilla strips, and cilantro. My husband had the Rancho Grande, which comes with a taquito, burrito, and enchilada, with rice and beans. He loved every part of it, so much so that he couldn't stop eating it, even after he was full! Our server, Erica, and the manager, Jordan, were excellent! Both were so attentive and really took our meal over the top. It seems like the restaurant has a lot of regulars, which should tell you something! The food was delicious, you get a lot of it, the price was fantastic, and the service was 100%!

Yelp
I'm happy to report that the chips and dip are free again, and the food is delicious as always. Try the puffy tacos if you have the chance, here's a little tip if you order them. Take a corn tortilla and wrap it around the puffy taco. That way all the deliciousness stays together while you eat it. If you go during the afternoon ask for Maria, she's super sweet and she'll take good care of you.

Yelp
We asked 4 times for chairs and the chairs finally came after the food was delivered. We got no silverware and had to eat with our hands. Also no chips and salsa. After eating with our hands I had to go to the bathroom to wash my hands. NO paper towels in the bathroom so now I'm curious if staff washed their hands. Worst service ever!!!

Yelp
Well, let's start with why I never recommend getting non-Mexican food at a Mexican food restaurant. The husband ordered the brisket gorditas. BRISKET. Why didn't the alarm go off in his head? The meat was cubed, smelled strong and had a slightly rancid taste that tried to be covered up with spices and onions. Fail. He ate the rice and beans, the Gordita shells and a couple of tortillas. Me knowing we are in a MEXICAN restaurant, order the bean and cheese chalupas. Delicious in their simplicity: fried red tortillas, beans, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. The tortillas were not greasy. Very light. The server was great. Kept our drinks refilled, checking on us at appropriate intervals. We'll go back, but I will be reminding the husband to stick to what Los Barrios does well - MEXICAN food.

Yelp
Best enchiladas I've had in a long time, No. 13 all the way. Owner was great. Came over and gave a bit of history of the restaurant. Waitress was awesome except she gave the bill to my cousin who paid the bill after I requested it. (My fault not hers actually). Everyone enjoyed the food and will come back when we visit S.A. next time.

Yelp
Los Barrios is always an experience. It's most definitely a family friendly restaurant -- both family owned and family friendly for those with young kids. Come one, come all! I had the enchiladas verdes with one enchilada poblanas as well. Both were yummy, and the refried beans were creamy and good as always. We also had the bean and cheese nachos. If you're ever visiting San Antonio, this is the spot to visit for sure!

Yelp
This used to be a must do place when visiting San Antonio. My wife and I were both disappointed in the food. You now have to pay for a bowl of tortilla chips. We used to get them with a cup of chimichurri sauce. We had to ask for that. My wife asked if there was no meat in her plate, server told her no. One of the enchiladas was smothered in chili con carne. The nachos we had were good. The cheese was nicely melted.

Yelp
Our daughter came from Dallas to spend her birthday week with the family. She loved Los Barrios when she lived here so she requested her birthday dinner there. This used to be one of our families favorite restaurants. On this visit, and with our previous one, the experience was inadequate. We were seated outside (party of 7) but there were plenty of table inside. We were the only patrons outside. There were flies everywhere. The service was terrible. Took forever to bring our drink order and even longer for the food service. All of our plates were cold and lacked taste. The puffy tacos were dripping in fat. All in all, not a good experience. We probably had our last visit to Los Barrios.

Yelp
I have never in my entire life been served cheese enchiladas topped with ground beef in a chili sauce. I like chili fries, chili, and cornbread, but definitely did not like it on top of enchiladas. What made it worse is that the menu does not state that. So we had to send one plate back because that person was vegetarian. Another member of our party ordered a bean and cheese Chalupa. What they got was a tiny little tostada. The rice was flavorless, beans passable. The chips that are free 99% of restaurants were not free here, they were small and no refills. Puffy taco was good but would have rather shredded beef instead of ground beef. Disappointed.
