Where To Eat For Under $10 In Mexico City - Mexico City - The Infatuation

"Some locals argue that hard-shell tacos aren’t “real” tacos. But we, along with the owners of Los Bernardino’s, think both hard and soft can peacefully coexist. This small spot in Condesa is the first proper hard-shell taco restaurant in CDMX, and their original (loaded with ground beef, pork, and bacon, plus guacamole, pico de gallo, and salsa) is one of our favorite cheap eats in the area. Get a few of those, plus a chocotaco with homemade vanilla and mazapan ice cream. Plan to hang for a bit to enjoy the playlist of fun, nostalgic Norteño and Mexican classics. If you come by on Tuesdays, you can get three savory tacos for the price of two." - guillaume guevara

Hidden in the lively streets of Condesa, Bernardino’s offers a truly unique taco experience, standing out as the only spot in Mexico City serving authentic hard shell tacos. If you’re looking for something different from the usual taco fare, this is the place to be. The setting is casual and low-key, with a simple yet inviting interior. The industrial design, with its metal tables and quirky details, creates a cool, no-frills vibe perfect for a quick, satisfying meal. Seating is limited but cozy, and the friendly staff ensure fast service. It’s a great place to stop by for a quick bite while exploring the neighborhood. The tacos themselves are a rare treat—handmade hard shell tacos that look and taste like a labor of love. Each taco comes generously filled with juicy, seasoned carne, fresh lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a variety of toppings like sour cream and their house-made spicy sauce. The combination of crunchy, golden shells and fresh ingredients makes these tacos truly stand out. They manage to balance traditional Mexican flavors with a homemade, comforting feel, giving you a taco experience that’s both nostalgic and new. While they only offer soft drinks, the focus here is clearly on the food. If you’re in Condesa and craving something unique, Bernardino’s hard shell tacos are a must-try. They’re unlike anything else in the city, bringing a taste of home-style hard shell tacos to the heart of Mexico City.

Tex-Mex style hard shell taco 🌮 not the most comfortable spot for dining in due to the limited seats and kitchen smell (I could not tell if it was coming from the restaurant itself or the street grill stand next door) We got the Bernardino’s Original. The shell was a bit too greasy for my liking. The fillings were okay - the flavor of the carne molida could be more complex - ended up adding a lot of hot sauce to compensate for the lack there of. Naturally gluten-free since the taco shell is made of corn 🌽

First of all, you gotta know this is not a real Mexican taco, if you’re visiting CDMX for the first time do yourself a favor and go elsewhere. I always walk past thought this little corner taqueria and I wanted to give it a try at least once… it was disappointing. Tables were very dirty, food extremely greasy, and the place wanted to be very “cool” by having a calendar of a naked man next to a picture of the pope… why? Sinceramente no regresaré.

Borders on installation art, where the creators had to laboriously retro engineer the “texmex” style of food against the odds in a city where many (largely tourists too) would claim to know the only “real” tacos, this place is showing that even the popularized styles of the northern neighbors are in fact originated by emigrants, “real” Mexican emigrants, in San Bernardino. Pokes at what we think of as authentic in a time when everyone’s claims of it gravitate towards being monochromatic and tearfully the same (it’s no surprise that we now find endless tacos around Europe that claim to be real simply because they are soft). Bringing back the hard in the soft, these are seriously fire, becoming something in and of their own right. Also a plus, the team are a cool bunch, and great decor. Stopover here for good tongue-in-cheek vibe that will make your tongue in cheek dance

Not sure why this place has so few reviews! Delightful hard shell tacos that are kind of reminiscent of gourmet Taco Bell. Definitely a must try while in CDMX. Owner is super nice and they have a cool selection of international sodas and drinks as well!

Google
Great new experience for a Mexican native, if you never had the chance to try tacos like the ones they prepare on the states then this is the place to try them. They were very welcoming and explained the menu to me. They even got a wide selection of imported sodas. The tacos are tasty, love the Tortilla texture, crunchy, also I recommend trying all the menu.

This is a mockery of Mexican food. Made by white people to intentionally appear Mexican owned and they purposely serve “American style tacos”. In Mexico City. This place is garbage.
